4 YEAR ANNIVERSARY TWITCH STREAM TODAY! www.twitch.tv/thrilluwu

I've gotten to the point in the video where you're asking "how real is too real?"/"or is it all just polygons, and we should detach ourselves from the virtual?" and IMO that question has never REALLY mattered. Parents for ages have struggled to understand that games I've been playing on the computer are with real people and can't always just be paused, to give an idea that the "spirit" of this question has been around a while already.
It's the wrong question, because "real" and "virtual" doesn't matter to your brain: they both create memories, they both teach you lessons, they both elicit emotional reactions, they both can allow interactions (both good and bad) with other humans. Even if both mediums are not physical, to your brain they are BOTH "reality".

worst effects of ultra realism: brainwashing tool
likely effects of ultra realism: discord-mod syndrome (user develops preference to simulation over reality)
effects on normal people: im broke from Gpu purchase and nvidia makes millions

Though per Index being the defacto for PCVR, I still prefer Vive, if nothing else than how irritating those over-the-ear not touching pieces are~
Per "what is too real," I think the creep will only increase and worry about collateral damage in process of discovering parameters of safety for physical/mental health, which exists moreso within the current artificial scarcity reality for most people.

I think having those kind of hyper realistic sims would be beneficial for society, a lot of people go crazy simply over being too lonely, they turn into creeps and rapists or kill themselves. If you can get 90% of a relationship in vr, especially one that you can literally build yourself without the problems that come with a real one, I see it keeping a lot of people happy. BUT!!!! I think deepfaking people into it WITHOUT consent should never be allowed. That would genuinely cause lots of problems on the human brain as far as parasocial relationships go. Like some dude having a virtual girlfriend modeled off someone who chose to do it, that’s fine cuz they’ll never meet them in real life most likely. Now imagine someone deepfaking their co-worker into whatever fantasy they want, developing this complete one sided fake relationship and then actually seeing them irl everyday, biggggg yikes.

Unrecord is insanely impressive but I also think it's important to understand some of the tricks going on here. There's blur, chromatic aberration, lowered resolution, all these things to make our view look more like a real camera, but these things also assist at hiding imperfections. Unrecord is realistic because of masterful trickery, making the lighting and animation as realistic as possible while deprioritizing things that are hidden by the medium. VR is a long way from true realism, not just because of the added resource usage VR inherently needs but also because it's much harder to emulate actual human experience than say... a camera or something similar.

    • @xguitarist_
      @xguitarist_ Год назад +11

Yeah it looks awesome as does a lot of stuff in UE5, but I was pretty surprised people genuinely thought it was real and I think it’s the post processing making it look like a camera doing the heavy lifting. Even ignoring animations, there’s clear things like the bottoms of the silver barrels being just a flat plane that are clearly not real.
It’s more like the uncanny valley I’d say, where it’s very close but some stuff just seems a hair off. I don’t think we’ll be able to get completely indistinguishable from reality games until we have the power to have a fully path traced game run on most hardware.
(I know Cyberpunk has path tracing now but it cripples a 4090, so developers aren’t gonna target that level of performance )

I first saw the demo in a gotcha-style video where they guy first showed the clip and only later “revealed” it's not real footage and my first reaction was “hey, that's a pretty good render.” I genuinely don't understand how people think it's real. The lighting is pretty wonky, half the textures are completely flat, specular maps need a _ton_ of work…
Technologically, it's extremely impressive and if the developer puts in the work to polish up the assets, it will look really good, but nowhere close to real life footage.

Just to add to the convo. We already have people who have grown up seeing gore on LiveLeak. While they may be desensitized to that type of content, that's what it is. Experiencing it in reality even then is fundamentally different, and I can't imagine anyone wants to see those things irl.
Virtual Reality may be another level of interaction but that also means the reality equivalent is as well. People's empathy will kick in long before they start to genuinely consider actually doing something like that.
Let's say they are indistinguishable not just visually but wholistically, people will simply either be able to separate it in their thoughts, or will probably feel too strongly to play it. If neither, they probably are a vast minority, and already had underlying issues.

As for the question about hyper realistic simulations, I think this argument has been going on for a very long time, certainly longer than VR has been around. The same things have been said about cinema, TV, and basically all other mediums. In the end, these experiences are forms of artistic expression, just like a disturbing poem or violent movie. They are not meant to be treated in the same way as physical reality. It's pretty exciting to see this type of fidelity, can't wait to see where it goes!

It seems like there is some kind of mixed message stuff happening with Meta currently, especially since I heard lately that they are going to focus more on releasing games as well as other VR/AR related things.
Despite all of that, I still remain hopefull for the future of VR, because it's already amazing, and I think for the naysayers, if they have an opportunity to actually try it, and not Richies Plank (into a TV) experience, or Roller Coaster Vomit simulator, then they would feel the same as we do.

When you shoot at people in airsoft it's not disturbing, and it's currently the closest thing to shooting at people. In my opinion, the same should be for videogames, no matter how realistic and immersive the experience is, at the end of the day, you can take your headset off or go to the parking lot and drink some beers with the other airsoft players.
I don't feel like there's a need to detach yourself from the virtual world. It's just that repercussions of actions in VR are limited to the digital world. For me, if there was a real life place where you can break stuff but at the end of the day, everything is cleaned up and restored, the consequences of doing something in that place would be the same as the consequences of doing it in a virtual environment. The actions taken place in virtual worlds usually have short lasting effects and they are usually separate from the real world, but they are still valid actions that are part of your life, nobody can change that, even if they believe "it's just some pixels". Someone collecting ultra rare coins would value his collection in a similar way someone would value their favourite game save file. They would grief if they lost it or had it damaged, they both can take actions to expand and change these treassures, and in the eyes of others, they might have no value at all, it's just a nerdy silly thing they don't care about. But you shouldn't listen to what others think, you should care about what matters to you.

The things people do in games and experience while viewing any form of media definitely have a massive impact on them. This is true to the extreme when it comes to games in general, let alone hyper realistic forms of gaming such as VR that enhances the senses and realism. This is already obvious in how we look at media such as RUclips or TikTok; it makes you feel emotion and experience things that you otherwise would not experience in your daily life. All that being said, it is one of those doubled-edged swords that is both a blessing and a curse. Shooting at very realistic human avatars or AI is going to deeply effect some people and cause a very real reaction, while at the same time other people shoot at them and not think twice about how real it feels. Much like the rest of the internet, it's a self-prescribed experience. You need to know your own self and limits before going in, because everyone will reach a part of the internet or media that is too much for them to handle.

    Hi Thrill,
I've been following your videos ever since I got my quest back in late 2020, and I just wanted to thank you for sharing your passion for VR with the rest of the world (Warning, I rambled a bit, so I left a TLDR at the bottom).
Ever since my 10-year-old self first saw gameplay of Job Simulator back in 2016, I knew I wanted a VR headset more than anything else, but back then, I never even thought it was possible to get my hands on a VR headset in the near future, let alone a standalone one that didn't need to be powered by a bulky PC. Because of that, it truly amazes me that my (what I thought to be) far-fetched dreams came true 3 years ago when I got the best birthday present ever--a quest 1--and since then I've always been jumping at the next big thing when I was able, upgrading to quest 2 and eventually getting a really nice used gaming laptop (mostly) just to play PCVR. I mean it when I say that my life is twice as good with VR because of all the amazing people I've met, all the thrilling games I've played, and all the jaw-dropping visuals I've seen (I'm looking at you, HL Alyx!).
I am honestly shocked that my generation, who lived and breathed Minecraft, Roblox, and other creativity-indulging games throughout elementary and middle school, aren't as enthusiastic about this new era of gaming and all the mind-blowing possibilities it brings to the table, but I am glad that people like you are still out there, as few in number as they are currently. People like you, especially you, keep me excited and happy and amazed for the future by making videos about all the cutting-edge VR tech and experiences that are coming to the surface right now.
Most importantly, though, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks VR is the best thing since sliced bread.
I'm so glad I'm not the only human who is absolutely giddy whenever, something, anything, new comes out in the VR world.
I'm so glad you're making awesome content and enjoying this incredible thing as much as I am.
    Thank you.
TLDR; I've been engrossed in VR ever since 2016, and I'm shocked that my dreams came true as early as they did and that I have a quest and PCVR of my own. Even though most people aren't as thrilled about VR as I am, I am so so appreciative of the people who share my passion and are creating incredible VR content like this. Thank you for everything!

    3:45 for the big topic.
This coming from someone who is very sensitive to VR already, and I get phantom sense and such.
    1. Old video games are not like VR, especially this extreme realism - I always had anxiety throughout my life, and immediately before getting VR my mind was in a dark place because I was only surrounded by negative people yelling at each other, and I was having massive sleep deprivation for many many months. So just being in the same room as people made me uncomfortable/angry. One day my brain needed a break so I played a game, I saw a character in a story saying some thoughts I was thinking before they did a thing, and it made me get VR as a last resort kinda thing because it's expensive. Luckily it removed my anxiety, and now I feel happy & comfortable being near people in real life. Able to be in the center of a room with no problems, instead of being the wall flower that goes around corners whenever possible like I used to be.
Point of this story is that, one game can heal someone by placing them in an environment that makes them feel positive around other people, then there's a good chance another game can make people feel negative around other people IRL. With that happening often enough, I feel some people would be either desensitized, and even probably influenced to do such things in real life. Empathy will stop people normally, however you know it'll happen because ya know people are gonna peer pressure each other into playing slashy gun man shooter 9000 to try to get them to "toughen up" or to "prepare just in case".
This coming from someone that always thought that video game violence was total BS since I grew up with violent video games all my life, and I was always the least violent person around. However, VR, and especially extreme realism changes that significantly. Flat screen games can be more of a stress release, but VR kinda puts your mind into the situation, which can cause more stress later.
    2. Decisions made in the moment can be a big deal - My subconscious is thoroughly fooled by VR, even when in a world that looks like it was made on the n64. I will catch myself doing some things instinctively in VR because my subconscious brain is treating it like reality. Thing is, while not everyone is this sensitive to VR, I'm sure there's plenty other people that get this way. I would imagine spending a lot of time in VR could make you reflexively do things IRL. So doing violent things is an obvious bad thing, but I'm sure there's other things that the brain might think is a good idea in the split second thinking that could be terrible.
    3. AI combined with realism is going to be a problem - AI gets better everyday. Eventually it will be able to replace your friends while they are gone. Imagine if you had a realistic looking version of your friend. That's pretty scary. Also a problem if you end up preferring AI friends over humans. After all, I would imagine AI could give you all the help you could ever need at any time, but humans often have problems in their lives, and emotions can do some damage.

Even right now, games can be immersive, and it can be a lot to handle.
Our brains store memories of VR as any other normal memory. What psychological repercussions could this pose? Can serious trauma come from simple gameplay? If so, how as an industry do we address this? With content warnings? To what end?

      @honeyplayeretitenne8935 Год назад +3

i dont think the main problem would be memory-wise but more of psychologically-wise : to put it short its normalising extreme violence on other humans
to put it long now: when talking about flatscreen gaming we have a distance wich is that the player is using a controller and looking at a screen to control his character but VR is changing all of that (in a good way) you are now the character doing the actions and as far as VR goes for now there isnt any problems. yes realistic combat games like onward already exist but the VR isnt that real yet (not only in graphics but also in animations for the characters and the fact that the player is still using controllers and not doing 100% of the actions themselves) but with hyper-realism, its going show people what killing someone by shooting looks like and possibly even feels like, that is pretty fucked up but i dont see no problem with it, however in my opinion its becoming really dangerous the moment that same person is going to play that game like he would play any game, and after a bit of time he would be de-sensitized to the feeling of killing a person and that is REAL DANGER

I honestly think that having a game/world/universe that's hyper realistic is the best thing that could ever exist for humanity. Everyone's first thought is "Violence this realistic will promote violence in the real life." but I could argue the exact opposite. Imagine a world where whenever anyone feels the urge to commit a crime, hurt a person, or do any other unlawful actions they could just throw on a headset or log onto there computer and commit crimes somewhere that has no real world consequences. That's just the violence aspect, there's already million of people that play games like airsoft and paintball and so many more that would want to but cant afford the gear or have time to go. VR games becoming this realistic could invent entire new sports and activities that people have never even imagined. Everything new is going to have its downsides, I do see the possible issues with realistic games this well made but I always choose to see the best outcome. This is honestly awesome.

I think the morality issue comes not from the realistic graphics themselves but more that the realistic simulations cause humans to become desensitized to horrific actions like shooting others since the line between fiction and reality is blurred graphically. If you look through social media, many people can't separate fiction from reality already. Generations growing up with social media causes alot of narcissism to be rewarded and act with main character syndrome in real life. Just look at the shitty way people from tiktok treat others like a prop or npc for their shitty content. Desensitized mentality will probably not help those kinds of actions

Unrecord wouldn't work the same way in VR... what makes it feel "super realistic" is, mostly, a result of how the camera is handled. Which works well in flatscreen, but just won't be effective in VR, where you can't manipulate the player's view like that.

Hyper Immersion almost killed me in the 1970s.
When I was a kid, we would wear Styrofoam bubbles (football shaped capsules) strapped to our backs when we went swimming instead of inflatable floaties kids use today on their arms. At some point, me or my mom removed the bubble and after some time, I thought it was still there. Hyper Immersion caused my brain to think I was still wearing it. I've had a similar, but briefer, experience after roller skating for a while and then removing the roller skates. Anyway, I happily jumped into the pool and remember looking up at the swirling sun as I sank to the bottom of the pool. Thankfully, my mom saw me, dove in, and saved my from drowning. But the mind plays crazy tricks on us when immersed in reality.
At some point, someone's going to commit a real murder and claim they thought they were in a virtual reality or that they were tricked into committing a murder they thought was virtual.
Side note: Yes, I get the double entendre regarding Hyper Immersion and drowning, hehe 🙂

I think once people stop being able to distinguish whether their actions are done in a virtual world, or a real one, that's when stuff should get banned.
I personally would love to try extreme experiences like that, but I know not everyone can handle that kinda stuff even being around.
I've never had trouble remembering that my actions in VR are different than my actions in real life, that's never been a question, but if that someday gets foggy, that's a dangerous ledge to be on.

I remember the first time I played Half Life Alyx, and having a pistol in my hand that I could not drop. Where my hand pointed, there was a gun pointing with it, at a one to one overlay of real physical space, a gun, something that could be used to harm others. It's quite disturbing for the majority of people outside of the US who don't have or use guns all the time, or for any time really. Sure, I was playing a character, it was only a video game, but the fact that my hand held a gun... it just felt really wrong. It's just hard to do violence when you are the one swinging the sword or pulling the trigger, and the target is just a normal person. It's not even close to my reality, but for some reason people want to simulate it virtually. It's not always fun to do murder simulations all the time. :-(

I remember the first time i killed a human in The walking dead Saints & Sinners. When the character started to back down and begged for his life i was genuinely shocked. But after the third time i didn't even cared. Even if a game feels realistic at first, eventually it will stay a game and nothing changes.
I think, to get down the "games trigger violence" route, there is a correlation between extreme violence or realistic violence in games and real life violence. But a correlation doesn't mean a causality. When someone is violent in the real life, he likes playing realistic and violent games because he can do something he shouldn't do in the real world but that doesn't mean, that every player who is playing those games would act out violence or even have the urge to do it.
I see one big and real problem: When people are getting detached from reality and start do fuse the virtual with the real. The more realistic, and the more accessories for realism there are, the more people will get this problem. Maybe not in a dangerous way, but some will.

I dont think its too much of an issue.
YES it is very realistic, and YES you do shoot at real looking humans.
But you know what else is basically the same if not more realistic?
    Airsoft!
Airsoft is a game where you hold guns that look real, feel real and even have simple recoil (blowback).
Yet its not really a problem since players can differentiate that that is just a game.
(when you do to some of the hardcore milsim events there are even people shooting with blank guns around you. So you even smell the gunpowder + hear shots)
