is the base game necessary to play for a beginner or is the online rulebook and 2 decks perfectly fine for someone who has never played this game before? Also if you buy a deck do you know what houses you are getting before you open it or is it always a blind deck with 3 random houses?
Two decks and the rule book is plenty. That's all I had for the first two months, before the starter set released. We would use dice for the damage, amber, etc. You do not know what houses are in the deck when you purchase it.
@@WatchItPlayed Awesome, thanks a lot for the reply and also i LOVE the channel. I just discovered it yesterday and already liking everything I have seen so far :D
I bought two decks for $10. Just need to proxy some tokens and counters and I should be good to go. Interested to see how it plays, they definitely have some cool and unique mechanics.
They could have included some kind of token that would demonstrate that the armor has been reduced for the rest of the round. Unless you don't fight so often which is unlikely for a game of that genre.
Fights are rarer than you might expect; since you normally can only use creatures of the declared house, you need at least a 2 turns to wind up to a fight without card effects, and only of 1 house.
I think if I play this I will just use damage tokens with armour and put them on that side of the card or upside down. Just keep track of however you like in other words; remove counters in end phase according to armour.
Are you supposed to announce 'check' on every key or just the final one like in the example? since 'check' is a chess term as well, which signals a threat to a loss
The point is to let your opponent know that you will be forging a key at the start of your next turn if they don't do something about it during their turn.

I use to play only board games with friends only if they took the time to teach me how to play. My friends taught the rules playing on the go. learning moves an tactical approach. I played 2 to 3 games. If it wasn't because someone taught me the rules I wouldn't play the board game or card game. I could only imagine being fun judging the box art work. @@WatchItPlayed for example: " destroy each creature, or , each creature gains ," before fight:exalt this creature". We understand it like each =all..but maybe we are wrong...
@@vikachooverkhovsky786 Vikachoo, while I do my best to answer all rules questions on my videos, I avoid specific card effects, because with all the games I cover, I can't get into that level of detail. For this, you'd want to double check with the publisher directly, or perhaps post a question on Board Game Geek.
This is awesome rules explanation, with a ditails and nuances. Thank you! Looks like the link in the bio is not working anymore, as Keyforge moved from FFG.
Being so used to games like Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, and Magic, it's odd seeing a game that is effectively nothing but draft playing if you've never played with the cards/deck/game before. However, on the flipside, I love the uniqueness of the game. It basically means no ditto games or "meta" decks. Everyone has the chance to be good or bad. It all depends on how you use the cards. While some cards STILL might be better, all decks have potential. I respect this.
Hi Mr. Smith, Do you think that you could make a review/ how to play of the new battletech game that was released? It looks really awesome but also fairly complex and you are hands down the best rule teacher I know of.
Hey! You're my wife and I's favorite at explaining board games. We're picking up Eldritch Horror and are curious as to if you've covered this. If so, I can't seem to find it! Can you point me in the right direction or show us this one? Thanks!
So here is a question. So, if I am primarily playing this game with my daughter, should we stay exclusive to the decks we play/register? In other words, is it OK to play with each other's decks, or was KeyForge designed so that people should solely play with their own decks? Thanks as always Rodney, hope to talk to you at Spring BGGC in Dallas or better yet, join us in a game of TI4:D
Hey Baylor, you can totally trade decks back and forth! There are a variety of ways to play, and some includes formats where players do exactly that. But really, the main thing is - they are yours to enjoy however you like. Here are some officially proposed formats: images-cdn.fantasyflightgames.com/filer_public/09/42/0942d306-fb64-4aec-a98b-0827da385dfe/kf_formats_and_variants.pdf

@@speedwaygamer Actually, being hit once already wouldn't change things. This creature just doesn't take damage when it fights. To hurt a creature with Skirmish, you either need to be the one initiating a fight against it, or deal damage to it some other way.
@@speedwaygamer ya those pesty weak monsters must of been like that one shadow clan monster who when dead return to hand so it had to fight once to leave.
Two questions if I may: 1) Is the Mulligan action only allowed during setup or do you have this option every turn? 2) In phase 1 can I pick one of my three houses/factions if I do not have any of thats house factions in my hand?
1) Just during that initial opening hand. 2) I would have said "any" house, except that I believe an update to the rules has released that says you can only declare one of your 3 own houses.
Just a quick question Rodney, when you bring a card into play and it is exhausted do you not do the PLAY action until the next turn or do you do it immediately even if the card is exhausted?
Wow, just when I got this, a Keyforge How To Play is here, clarifying some things for me even more clearly, thanks :D I do have a question though... what is the condition for a creature to be considered to "be in a flank"? Some cards specifically target creatures that are/aren't on a flank. Does there have to be a creature(or creatures) in the middle, for the ones on the far left and far right to be considered to be in a flank, or can it also happen if you for example have only 2 creatures (0 creatures in between).
Yep any creature on the far left or right is on the flank. So if you have 2 creatures, they are both on the flank and if you only have 1 creature it is on a flank as well.
@@NileSings I see.. thanks for clarifying it. So I guess a single creature is considered to occupy both left and the right flank, while 2 creatures occupy those two flanks individually. Well, that's really useful information. Guess we've been playing the game slightly wrong for a while xD
@@IvanSensei88 I was playing a demo game at my LGS with a military vet and he was like "If anyone knows what a flank is, it's me and that isn't what a flank is" so I know it's definitely specific to this game lol!
Quick question are constant effects available to both players or the player who owns the card? Example constant effect on house shadow customs office #285 and speed sigil #293.
Not really. I mean, you'd be missing the rule book, and tokens, and a few other things that you could replace with dice or other tokens you already have. A starter is a good way to begin though, so you have those items.
Hello, i like very much your channel, you explain really well and have helped me to understand how to play several games. Have you done or are planing to explain gloomheaven? Im looking forward to see you doing a video about this game.
This game looks fun and refreshing. And the best part is that it doesn't look like a pay you win game where you always have to buy new cards if you want to keep your deck viable!
Thanks for a very clear and understandable video. FFG should link to it on the game's webpage... Not meaning to nitpick, but in your 'fight' example (9:42), wouldn't both creatures actually NOT get any damage at all? Since the attacker has 'Skirmish', and the attacked creature has 'Elusive'? I get the example and how it would normally work, so the example is still functional, but this still confuses me somewhat (I played my first game just yesterday).
You’re quite right Mark. At that point in the video I was explaining the general principles of combat, absent of special keyword effects - but for those in the know, it would have been better if I had picked a different card for the example (to avoid confusion).
Rodney, you are the best. I have a very specific question. In the situation where I play the fogbank action card from Untamed and my opponent has the follow the leader action card from Brohbar in the next turn, can he use the action to attack me or does the fogbank cancel that ability? We're just beginning and trying to understand these kinds of conflicting situations. Any guidance is greatly appreciated!
Hey Michelle, thanks for the kind words! As much as I try to answer every question on all my videos, I avoid once about specific cards and interactions, as that's more than I can manage as one person across all these games. That said, you can often get help by posting on the BoardGameGeek forums. I would recommend detailing the exact wording of the effect when posting your question, as it will help people answer, who don't have those specific cards in front of them at the time. All the best!
Hello Michelle. I'm three months late, but better now than never I guess. When you're looking for answers regarding specific game situations, it's always helpful to include the text effects of those cards, so that even the people who are familiar with the rules, but not fully familiar with all the card effecta can give you an answer. Well regardless, let's have a look at those two cards: "Fogbank" Play: Your opponent cannot use creatures to fight on their next turn. "Follow the Leader" Play: For the remainder of the turn, each friendly creature may fight. In the CCG world, restrictions usually overrule the possibilities, and this game isn't an exception. "May" just allows you to perform an attack with each creature if you want to (Even if it's not from the Active House you've chosen), however - the previous effect that restricts attacks is in use, and it basically cancels out any possibilities of launching an attack that turn. So, no.. the Brobnar player unfortunately would not be able to attack at all, even if he used Follow The Leader card. If you need more clarification, here's en exempt from the rulebook: CANNOT VS MUST/MAY, CANNOT VS PERMISSIVE If two card effects are simultaneously instructing a player that they “cannot” do something and that they “must” or “may” do the same thing, the “cannot” effect takes precedence. _Example: Anna controls a Pitlord (COTA 093) which reads “While Pitlord is in play you must choose Dis as your active house.” On their next turn Anna’s opponent plays Restringuntus (COTA 094) which reads “Play: Choose a house. Your opponent cannot choose that house as their active house until Restringuntus leaves play.” and chooses Dis for its ability. On Anna’s next turn, she both must and cannot choose Dis, but because cannot takes precedence over must, she only cannot choose Dis and must choose one of her other houses instead._ Hope it helps :D
I generally avoid answering questions on specific card effects (requires a level of involvement in the game which I just can't assume as someone not with the company). My sense is that it affects everyone, (because the card text tends to be pretty specific in this game, when it intends to be specific) but do not take that as an official answer.
To reinforce what Rodney is saying specifically involving this example, the card called Iron Obelisk reads "Your opponent’s keys cost +1[aember] for each friendly damaged Brobnar creature." Given the specification for opponents keys on Iron Obelisk, unless there was a large mistake in one or both of the text on these cards, Titan Mechanic should affect both players.
@@ishanshadeslayer using MTG logic a friendly creature is one that you control, so the effect would be an increase in amber cost to your opponent for each damaged creature you control
I Love your videos Rodney. You are awesome with tell every rule and other thing so good work. But I have one question. If I have only logos in my hand at a start of a round can I play every card if I choice the logo as my aktiv house if so do I need to have some kind of requirements to activate all?
Thanks for the kind words. If you have all of one faction in your hand, then you can pick that faction and play all of those cards. In your question, you then say "activate all". I don't know exactly what you mean by activate all, but basically, once you pick a house, you can do everything you want to with that house (play it's cards, use effects, discard those cards). Just remember that creatures and artifacts come into play exhausted, so if you just played those cards, you can't then use them right away - you'll have to wait until they are readied.
I’m pretty positive it says in the rules that when you use an artifact it’s only destroyed if the text specifies that. Just looking at page 6 in the pdf rulebook available online.
No problem! I had no idea if it was public knowledge or not, I just couldn't find the info anywhere so thought I'd ask haha. Thanks for taking the time to reply though! :)
Ah, good. A group of friends and I who usually do a secret Santa split on a box of this so that we are each buying each other two decks. We are going to play a little tournament with one deck and use the results for picking the second deck (by only looking at the houses, to keep the surprise). I'll pass this along to them so that they can learn the rules, thanks.
@@WatchItPlayed coming from magic it feels weird to not spend hours crafting a deck. I mean. Nothing stops you from building any deck with singles for kitchen table play
So you have one of the decks Im looking for to get my family playing. Slaughter, Druid of Dust! (for my mother lol) (figure if the decks have there names then its a better shot)
Maybe I missed it but does combat act like in magic where the defender picks who will block the attack? Also what is the point of attacking if all you want is to generate tokens to forge a key?
Hey Dragora, you'll find an index in the description of the video that will take you to the various sections you might have questions about. here is the section on fighting: ruclips.net/video/yUJTn35nCMA/видео.html While you will often want to Reap, sometimes you'll also want to attack an opponents creatures because they may have powerful abilities that are giving your opponent an advantage while they are in play. You may also have certain Fight Effects that you want to trigger on your cards. Or, you may simply want to reduce the number of creatures your opponent has to reap with.
Derisat Hartfelt it's not a repost. Watch it played posts "how to play" videos as well as actual game play. It's one of the most useful gaming RUclipss out there
Wow, this seems complicated! I’m probably too used to MtG, which is also pretty complicated starting out. I found myself mentally converting the Keyforge concepts into MtG equivalents, which might’ve made this harder to follow...
I seem to have seen a lot of Hype around this game but am unsure why, either way the random starter sounds pretty interesting, made me curious for sure.
So, when you choose your active house (dis), but say you have another card from a different house (shadows) on the field, say an artifact "Speed Sigil" that says: "the first creature played each turn enters play ready." does the speed sigil's affect still work when I play a creature even though it is from a different (non-active) house? If so, would this work for upgrades and creatures, too? For example: If you had the Hayyel the Marchant card which says: "Each time you play an artifact, gain an aember" in play, but at the start of your turn chose a different house, would Hayyel's ability still work? Thanks!
Speed Sigil works no matter which house is active because it doesn't have a keyword in front of it's action. This is a constant ability. Also, don't forget that it says the first creature of "each turn" gets the benefit (meaning this triggers during your opponents turn as well). The same applies to Hayyel the Merchant, because it's a constant ability. Hope that helps!
I personally feel like step 3 should work like this Player 1 can play/discard 1 card Player 2 can play/discard up to 2 cards Player 1 can play/discard up to 3 cards etc... This way it doesn't end up with situations where because player 2 can play his hand on his first turn and player one can't ... player one can theroetically end up with an effective 12 card disadvantage if the stars align... (and that's assuming player 2 doesn't draw cards of the same house because ... that can get exponential fast) and likewise it then stops player 1 from just ending up playing hand on his turn two... in other words you can only get massive 15 card combos on turn 15...
@@WatchItPlayedThis is true- but posting it here also gives the idea to other players if they feel player 2 gets a huge advantage (which may or may not be the case as is)

You’re very welcome - glad it was helpful!
Great instructional video! Everything is explained as clearly as I could imagine. Thank you!
Thanks for the kind words!
is the base game necessary to play for a beginner or is the online rulebook and 2 decks perfectly fine for someone who has never played this game before? Also if you buy a deck do you know what houses you are getting before you open it or is it always a blind deck with 3 random houses?
Two decks and the rule book is plenty. That's all I had for the first two months, before the starter set released. We would use dice for the damage, amber, etc.
You do not know what houses are in the deck when you purchase it.
@@WatchItPlayed Awesome, thanks a lot for the reply and also i LOVE the channel. I just discovered it yesterday and already liking everything I have seen so far :D
@@A3sth3tik Ah, very kind of you to say - great to have you here!
I bought two decks for $10. Just need to proxy some tokens and counters and I should be good to go. Interested to see how it plays, they definitely have some cool and unique mechanics.
I hope you have a great time with it!
Rodney, you are a master. Great video
Thanks so much! I appreciate that!
Woohoo! Sylvester Ribald Cove Nurse, got me my first victory in my first ever KeyForge game over Rock the Disconcertingly Average!
We don’t talk about that!
Congratulations.
Thank you for another great rules video. I can't wait to buy a KeyForge starter pack and get playing... :)
Not too much longer to wait now - thanks for watching!
I immediately thought this was the fighting bit was explained.
I think if I play this I will just use damage tokens with armour and put them on that side of the card or upside down. Just keep track of however you like in other words; remove counters in end phase according to armour.
12:55 “Dis house” haha Rodney, you cheeky bastard. 😂
Are you supposed to announce 'check' on every key or just the final one like in the example? since 'check' is a chess term as well, which signals a threat to a loss
On each key.
On every key according to game manual.
The point is to let your opponent know that you will be forging a key at the start of your next turn if they don't do something about it during their turn.
I play mtg since 1998 but I think I will give it a go since many of my friends started it... At least it doesnt have the noob net decking that everyone with daddy's big pockets can create a 700$+ deck and win.Its fair for everyone
About a month ago or two came across this channel & I'm in love with it. Full of good educational knowledge how to play board games, card games. Because of this channel I'm excited to purchase random board game & find out Rodney Smith has a tutorial. I even watch videos in advance an get a taste if I want to purchase board games or card games. Recently bought Yomi it's a really interesting game. Personally I'm tired of yugioh.
Hey, so nice to hear the videos have been helpful as you've been exploring new games! I hope you find many more to have fun with, with family and friends!
“The color of the key doesn’t matter”
The Red Baron- “am I a joke to you?”
Me and my friends are obsessed with this right now. Our personal collections of decks are getting a little ridiculous.
Thank you for another great video. Can you please explain, what does it mean , when it says : "each creature". And.. can you attack your own creature? ... Thank you.
Hey there, I would need a specific example, to know what you mean by "each creature". Do you have a time stamp in the video you'd like to ask about?
You cannot attack your own creatures.
Looks fun and the artstyle looks alot like the mmorpg Wildstar
This is awesome rules explanation, with a ditails and nuances. Thank you!
Looks like the link in the bio is not working anymore, as Keyforge moved from FFG.
Thanks for the heads up about the link - I've updated it!
Yes, they are definitely going for a different approach to these styles of games here.
THIS IS THE VIDEO WE WERE ALL WAITING FOR! YES! YES!

Hi Mr. Smith,
Do you think that you could make a review/ how to play of the new battletech game that was released? It looks really awesome but also fairly complex and you are hands down the best rule teacher I know of.
Thanks for the interest! I talk a bit about that here: ruclips.net/video/EdtDuvIUa6A/видео.html&t=342
Really clear, Mr Smith, as usual! Merci beaucoup!
Glad you enjoyed!
Hey! You're my wife and I's favorite at explaining board games. We're picking up Eldritch Horror and are curious as to if you've covered this. If so, I can't seem to find it! Can you point me in the right direction or show us this one? Thanks!
Glad you're both enjoying the series Adam. Haven't covered that one.
I know it should not bother me to much it just using that batdrone to show how fight works when it have an ability to not take damage during combat but you put damage on it.
An understandable frustration - I was focused more on the basics of combat, but you are certainly correct.
@@WatchItPlayed ya same here i understand frist is getting the understanding of the rules and you have to use what you have out. Great like always and looking forward to keyforge i pre order the starter box already.
maybe it had already been hit once this turn . It was a snapshot . ( I had to justify it in my head as it irked me too lol)
Two questions if I may:
1) Is the Mulligan action only allowed during setup or do you have this option every turn?
2) In phase 1 can I pick one of my three houses/factions if I do not have any of thats house factions in my hand?
Ps.Thanks for this video. For sure the best video on the net to learn this game.
You perform the Play action right away. Even though it comes into play exhausted, its play effect still occurs as it comes into play.
I'll have to take a look at this!
Wow, just when I got this, a Keyforge How To Play is here, clarifying some things for me even more clearly, thanks :D
I do have a question though... what is the condition for a creature to be considered to "be in a flank"?
@@NileSings hahahahahahah good one xD Yeah, this is a Keyforge Flank.. not to be mistaken with a military one xD
Thanks to NileSings for the assist!
Hey Rodney, thanks for the video! Do you mind sharing what camera + lens(es) are you using? Thanks!
Lumix GH5 with GH4 kit lens.
@@WatchItPlayed Thanks a lot. One last question, what about the lavalier/lapel mic?
@@Multipotentialist Sennheisers (but I forget which model off the top of my head).
Quick question are constant effects available to both players or the player who owns the card? Example constant effect on house shadow customs office #285 and speed sigil #293.
If the effect doesn't specify a specific player, then it affects all players.
Very well explained, as usual...
Thank you kindly Daniele!
Must you own the starter box to play?
Thanks for the kind words Arturo. I don’t pre-announce games I might cover, as my schedule can change.
You're the best, Rodney.
So glad you enjoyed!
This game looks fun and refreshing. And the best part is that it doesn't look like a pay you win game where you always have to buy new cards if you want to keep your deck viable!
Thanks for checking the video out!
As usual, freaking good explanation ! Thanks a lot.
You’re very welcome, thanks for checking this out!
Taking heavy inspiration from MTG is a surprisingly good move! Game looks fun and the random deck aspect is interesting to say the least.
Is it an inspiration when it was made by Richard Garfield? You know the person who made MTG.
@@fuzesidaniel1701 I mean it technically is. He also made Bunny Kingdom and King of New Tokyo and those definitely were not inspired by MTG.

I CANT WAIT TO GET THIS!!!!
15:30 Dis-card piles :P
Well regardless, let's have a look at those two cards:
"Fogbank"
Play: Your opponent cannot use creatures to fight on their next turn.
"Follow the Leader"
Play: For the remainder of the turn, each friendly creature may fight.
If you need more clarification, here's en exempt from the rulebook:
CANNOT VS MUST/MAY, CANNOT VS PERMISSIVE
If two card effects are simultaneously instructing a player that they “cannot” do something and that they “must” or “may” do the same thing, the “cannot” effect takes precedence.
On Anna’s next turn, she both must and cannot choose Dis, but because cannot takes precedence over must, she only cannot choose Dis and must choose one of her other houses instead._
Hope it helps :D
is the Titan Mechanic trait effect both of the players keys? or just the player who control it?
I maybe used the wrong word. But I got the answer what I needed so thank you and continue with the good work 👍👏
I’m pretty positive it says in the rules that when you use an artifact it’s only destroyed if the text specifies that. Just looking at page 6 in the pdf rulebook available online.
I’m not sure why you’re mentioning that though - did you find something in the video that said otherwise? Do you have a time stamp?
I think I might have found a new card game for my girlfriend I to play. This video was very helpful.
Very glad to hear it Rodger!

While you will often want to Reap, sometimes you'll also want to attack an opponents creatures because they may have powerful abilities that are giving your opponent an advantage while they are in play. You may also have certain Fight Effects that you want to trigger on your cards. Or, you may simply want to reduce the number of creatures your opponent has to reap with.
Please PLEASE do a playthough of a keyforge game or two Rodney
We'll see :)
Are you going to be at wizardcon madison? Or have a sales presence?
Not sure what you mean by a “sales presence”. I don’t really sell things.
Sorry I thought this was the keyforge actual RUclips not a repost
Derisat Hartfelt it's not a repost. Watch it played posts "how to play" videos as well as actual game play. It's one of the most useful gaming RUclipss out there
Wow, this seems complicated! I’m probably too used to MtG, which is also pretty complicated starting out. I found myself mentally converting the Keyforge concepts into MtG equivalents, which might’ve made this harder to follow...
Yes, it's probably best to approach this on its own terms, as the rules don't have a lot of cross-over.
I seem to have seen a lot of Hype around this game but am unsure why, either way the random starter sounds pretty interesting, made me curious for sure.
Did you get a chance to try this one out?
This games looks very interesting
Thanks for checking it out!
Hello Rodney, can you reap twice when a card also has that ability?
Nope. The effect is not a separate action - it's something that "also" happens when you reap.
Thanks Rodney. I can't wait to play this. Greatings from The Netherlands! 😁
I personally feel like step 3 should work like this
Player 1 can play/discard 1 card
Player 2 can play/discard up to 2 cards
Player 1 can play/discard up to 3 cards
etc...
The beauty of tabletop gaming is that you can always make your own house rules and try it out! Thanks for checking out the video.
@@WatchItPlayedThis is true- but posting it here also gives the idea to other players if they feel player 2 gets a huge advantage (which may or may not be the case as is)
if i have 6 or more embers, do i have to forge the key when it's the keyforge step? or i can keep them til i would like to forge the key
Arthur Chen You MUST forge during that step, if you can.
