I've even played this solo after watching and reading the rules thoroughly. It's that much fun. I've had this game for a while now, and it's become quite the favorite among my playing groups and friends. It's easy and with just enough strategy to keep things competitive. Very happy you brought this one out, Rodney. Awesome!
Rodney, sir, you are my hero. My son and I literally come to your channel every time we get a new game to see if you have a video on it. You've saved us bucketloads of time and frustration and I just wanted to say thanks for all you do.
Just when I think I know a game well, I see the part about the Intelligence ability and NOT having to keep the new value! Or the part about discarding unused Market cards during setup and not removing them from play! This is why your videos are the best Rodney.
Rodney from the bottom of my heart I say this. I love your work, your attitude and your enthusiasm. But I suspected I would be going to your channel for most of my how to play videos but unless it's older stuff where you played with your son and your daughter I don't really stop here for much lately. Now this game Roll Player, is more of what I'm looking for so thank you and good luck with the BGG partnership.
Ordered by popularity and starting with the most popular, I flipped through Roll Player reviews and >:( you're the first reviewer who actually read the rules. Anyway, :) thanks for that.
Rodney does it again for me! Just got Roll Player and Monsters expansion today, and whilst I played it a few years ago, I was a bit rusty, so the trusty Watch It Played Channel comes up trumps again. 👍😁👍
This looks like a game right up my alley. I always loved creating D&D characters and thinking about the lives they've had, but I was never very good at playing the game itself. My imagination always seemed to lack something when playing role-playing games. I'm certainly going to add this to my personal wish list.
Played this last night and it was VERY fun. Not a game I ever even considered buying, but now am seeking out a copy and telling people about your tutorial Rodney :)
Being a D&D guy this game looks like fun. I also enjoy the planning in building the dice up while still overcoming the randomness of the die roll. Can't wait to get my hands on this one :D
Thanks for helping me with relearning the game. New game group starts tomorrow and this is on the list. I always go to see if you made a video for a game I want to play:)
Finally was able to find a copy of this and its expansion this week! can't wait to try it out tonight! I actually got it because of that video and the gameplay videos you made.
I’ve been trying to teach myself this on Tabletopia since it came out, to no avail. Did a head slap while I was watching Tom’s review of the expansion, and your video popped up! Perfect timing! I think I need physical copies of both, now. 😉
this game is damn fun. it's got super deep combos and tactics, but you kinda play on your own. my wife and i can watch an entire movie while playing this. we played with my nephew last night, our first time with three people. he is a bugger, constantly trying to deny people and crush people in any games he plays. He was out for blood, and I still scored FORTY!! Forty points yo, legit scored in a 3 player game of Roll Player. If he hadn't bought Search from the market, I would have gotten it and used it to get my 6th backstory gem color matched, and i could have scored 43.
Rodney, thanks for the video. Just picked this up a few weeks ago and it has been sitting around waiting for me. Your video might jump start me getting to this one. I also got the expansion, so hopefully, I can get a few plays of it after I learn the base game. BTW, congrats on the new association with BGG.
Great video as always. Looks like a great game for people who like dice game. Or for people who always thought the best part of D&D was rolling a character!
Thanks Jackie! I think the designer did recognize that many people really do enjoy that character creation process, and saw it as a fun opportunity to turn it into a game.
Good game. Scoring is a bit tricky, and you have to pay attention to a lot of things all at once. Like I like to say, it has a lot of moving parts! We played three times the first two days we had it! So it is definitely fun! It’s a thinking game for sure!
Couple of quick questions: Open Lock skill card - I move it down one alignment square just to use the skill ie if i choose not to buy the card i move one space. If I do buy a trait card then I will move the alignment marker twice ? Once for using the skill and once one for the trait ? Some backstory cards may need you to score 18 but the character card has -2. Therefore with 3 sixes I get a score of 16. I assume here my choices are : Use a trait card to go for the score of 8 or less option? Or use something like a weapon card where I can add +1 to a die of my class colour. So a 6 can become a 7? Is that right ? Finally, the Courageous card - can I plus or minus 2 for each of the 6 attributes? Or is it for use on just one row of the 6 rows - and I choose the row I want to apply it too.
I do my best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but I avoid individual card effects, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there - have fun playing!
Thanks for the kind words :) On this channel, I avoid offering personal opinions or recommendations, as I find every gamer is quite different in their tastes, and what one person would find fun at one player count, another would disagree with - so I tend to avoid those discussions.
I would say three or four, simply because it gives you more options for dice colors you may need for your Backstory, as well as more options for cards to buy from the Market.
This looks fun! Have you done a video for Quarriors? I bought it a few years ago, and we never got around to learning. Your videos are easily the best tutorials
Any chance of doing a version / addendum of this for the Monsters and Minions expansion? I was surprised this wasn't part of the video although still super happy you did the walk-through of this awesome game!
I don't tend to cover expansions, which is why that wasn't included here either. I generally try to share what's required to get playing the base game, and hope that it will assist people who decide to dive into expansions. So many games coming out all the time, it's hard to keep up with just the non-expansion games I'd like to cover :)
What's the functional point of leaving your character (Racial) cube on the Class card during the game? I understand the the Cube on the Alignment has a function but I may have missed what the Cube on the class card does?
Towards the end of the video we mention that you use this cube when scoring. You really don't need to keep it in that specific spot during the game, but that is what the rules recommend :)
Confirmed. Towards the end of video, the cube in question is used for scoring. LOL, the initiative cards get more action than these cubes. All-in-all, Thank for the How-to! its definitely on my list of #WannaPlay2018
I was just gifted this and I had a question about the expansion. The expansion has dice that exceed the standard 6 pips. In your video here you said explicitly that "you can not increase a pip of 6" using the Constitution bonus. Is that a hard rule, so if you had one of those special dice that was on a 6, you could not use it to become a 7? Or were you just generally saying that you cannot "increase" a 6 to either a number it can't achieve or to somehow magically spill over and reach the other side?
Sorry Blake, I don't have the rules for the expansion handy. The rules I give here are exclusively for the base game only - the expansion may change things (or it may not - it would hopefully be clear by checking those).
As it turns out, lots of gamers enjoying playing board games solo. I don't do it very often, but I know several people who really enjoy that style of board gaming.
Doh! With the release of the expansion recently, I was expecting it to be incorporated into this episode. Odd that it's the base game getting the treatment 2 years after release. But still, as always a great resource for those that don't know the game yet.
I don't tend to cover expansions. The game was out of print for awhile and now that both at back in stock, this seemed like a good time to catch people up. We often do cover games on the bleeding edge of release, but often I enjoy featuring ones that aren't as brand new. We just did Ticket to Ride a few months ago :)
Watch It Played Ah, okay. Didn't realize it was out of print. Thanks for the knowledge, and thanks for all your great videos...even Ticket to Ride 14 years after release...haha! I'll use the TTR video when I introduce it to my kids in a few years. I appreciate all your hard work, and congrats on the BGG affiliation.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by "you don't do anything". In the base game you build a character. The theme of the game is seeing who can earn the most points through the creation of their character. Later expansions introduced the idea of introducing monsters, etc.
You could use this to create some characters, and then play D&D with those characters! The expansion also adds a bit of adventuring and fighting monsters.
I avoid reviewing on this channel, so can't help you there - that said, I've got videos for both, so you can see them in action and help decide which might appeal to you more.
For a veteran gamer like me, who enjoys spending the first 30 hours of games like Skyrim in the character creation screen, this game fits like a glove. 😂😂😂
I think I hate my daughter. She and her boyfriend came over this weekend, and not only did she win, but she scored higher than my wife have EVER scored, scoring 39 points to my measly 26. Now, the question I did have, was when playing with four players, it did not say how many cards to take out, IF ANY from the market place. So, I assumed that meant we did not remove any, which we did not. (My daughter got ALL of her attribute scores and the full set of chain mail..... that does it, I decided, I do hate her!!
Watch It Played it is silent. It says if you have 3 players remove 3 from each pile, or if 2, remove 7 from each pile. If single player, set up for 2 player, remove Diplomacy (and after setting up the deck discard the top card before setting up the first market cards). So I am with you. Silence means no cards are removed. As a retired attorney, the silence is the affirmative in this case. I am still in disbelief at my daughter's stunning victory, and beginner's luck. When my wife and I have been playing, we are lucky to break 30!! It is a lot of fun, but is tricky! We really appreciate your videos and they have added so many new games to our collection!!!!!! I think London is one of our favorite that you taught us about. But Seven Wonders and Duel! Thank you so much!!!
I never understood why specific colors on specific faces make up a character's backstory... or why a character can't overshoot to 20 thanks to racial bonuses when the goal is 18.
Some of the Backstory cards do have 18+ goals on them, but not many. This is because if you drew it for a character that has a -2 in that slot, it is almost impossible to obtain. For the colored dice, I like to think each die represents an aspect of their training they need to obtain at a certain time, or a specific advantage needed for that stat.
Actually, an 18 is impossible with a -2, since having a 6 in all slots would only amount to 16. Don't confuse the class (with the stat goals) and backstory (with the colored goals). Makes sense though... I think.
Actually, reaching 18 is not impossible. There are Market cards that make all gold dice +1 value at game end, make one Attribute row +2 or -2, etc. The expansion also adds Boost dice which go from 3 to 8 instead of 1 to 6.
Interesting how they followed D&D so extremely closely with the races and attribute names and 9 alignments and so on. Sad there isn't a combat element without an expansion.
There are few things as reliable in life as your videos. Many thanks !
Ah, very kind of you to say!
So, basically D&D Character Creation as a Game in itself? Sounds like fun!
So Meta
and the name of the game reflects that perfectly :D
I've even played this solo after watching and reading the rules thoroughly. It's that much fun. I've had this game for a while now, and it's become quite the favorite among my playing groups and friends. It's easy and with just enough strategy to keep things competitive. Glad to hear you've been enjoying this one Steve!
Rodney, sir, you are my hero. My son and I literally come to your channel every time we get a new game to see if you have a video on it. You've saved us bucketloads of time and frustration and I just wanted to say thanks for all you do.
That's super nice of you to say Rob - so glad the videos have been helpful. I hope you both continue to have lots of fun gaming sessions together :)
I cannot express in words how happy I am that you've done a 'how to play' video for this game! Thank you so much Rodney! You're a legend! 🤩
So glad you found the video and enjoyed it!
This game to me has the feel of Sagrada, with the theme of D&D. Very interesting to me! Thanks for the great video!
You're very welcome - thanks for checking it out!
Wanted to say exactly the same
Alexander Semeniuk: I just said the same thing.
Funny because I just described to someone like that 😂
Congrats on this awesome partnership with BGG. What a great game to showcase and have that logo appear for the first time!
Thank you Matt! We also put the logo onto our tutorial for Pioneer Days as well, but either way, very happy to be working with them!
You are the explanation king! Thank you, Rodney, for an another excellent video!!!
That's very kind of you to say - very glad you've been enjoying! :)
One of my favourite games. thanks for featuring it :) The expansion "Monsters & Minions" really kicks this up.
I look forward to trying it!
Tried this yesterday with the expansion. Amazing game, very quick and easy to learn but a lot of thinking involved! Cannot recommend it enough!
Thanks for sharing your feedback!
We love you, Rodney! Much love from the states.
Greetings back from Canada :)
Just when I think I know a game well, I see the part about the Intelligence ability and NOT having to keep the new value! Or the part about discarding unused Market cards during setup and not removing them from play! This is why your videos are the best Rodney.
Both easy things to miss - glad the video was a help!

Glad you liked this selection - hope to see you anytime we're featuring a game you might enjoy.
Rodney, ur channel is the best for learning board games! Clear and fun~
Thanks Eunice, always nice to know the videos are being enjoyed!
Ordered by popularity and starting with the most popular, I flipped through Roll Player reviews and >:( you're the first reviewer who actually read the rules. Anyway, :) thanks for that.
I try to be pretty thorough, so I appreciate hearing that!
Rodney does it again for me!
Just got Roll Player and Monsters expansion today, and whilst I played it a few years ago, I was a bit rusty, so the trusty Watch It Played Channel comes up trumps again. 👍😁👍
Glad this helped James!
Thanks Rodney! Your how to play videos are great!
Thanks so much Donald!

My imagination always seemed to lack something when playing role-playing games. I'm certainly going to add this to my personal wish list.
Glad to hear this appealed to you Ian!
I've wanted to play this game for a year or so. Now I'm REALLY ready to play. I'm pumped! I need to buy it! Thanks Rodney!
You're very welcome!
I simply LOVE your videos of How To Play. Thank you!!
Thank you so much!
Played this last night and it was VERY fun. Not a game I ever even considered buying, but now am seeking out a copy and telling people about your tutorial Rodney :)
Hey, always fun when a game surprises you! Thanks for sharing the video :)
Being a D&D guy this game looks like fun. I also enjoy the planning in building the dice up while still overcoming the randomness of the die roll. Can't wait to get my hands on this one :D
Glad the video was a help to you!

I hope you all have a great time playing!
Finally was able to find a copy of this and its expansion this week! can't wait to try it out tonight!
I actually got it because of that video and the gameplay videos you made.
Hey, so nice to hear. I hope you have a great time playing!
Yes! I've been waiting for this for so long!
Hey, glad we finally came through :)
I’ve been trying to teach myself this on Tabletopia since it came out, to no avail. Did a head slap while I was watching Tom’s review of the expansion, and your video popped up! Perfect timing! I think I need physical copies of both, now. 😉
Glad this was helpful!
Thank you for explaining how to play. We will definitely be buying this next.
I hope you have a great time playing!
Love it! Thank you Rodney, cannot wait to give it a try
Have a great time playing Luna!
this game is damn fun. it's got super deep combos and tactics, but you kinda play on your own. my wife and i can watch an entire movie while playing this.

I feel like I'm ready to play now. Thanks, Rodney!
You’re welcome! Have fun :)
So I actually work at the store where this guy playtested and and Keith’s main play tester is my boss!!!
Very cool!
Very cool!
Love dice so interested in this game. Thank you for great explanation and play of game....as a,ways!😊
You're very welcome Susan!
What timing! I just got it today.
Awesome - I hope this helps!
Rodney, thanks for the video. Just picked this up a few weeks ago and it has been sitting around waiting for me. Your video might jump start me getting to this one. Thanks Jackie! I think the designer did recognize that many people really do enjoy that character creation process, and saw it as a fun opportunity to turn it into a game.
Oh, I'm not being snarky. Character creation was always half the fun.
I didn't think you were :) Just agreeing that I think you and the designer picked up on the same point of interest for people.
Great video - I can't wait to play this game now. Thanks for posting.
You bet Mark - thanks for checking it out!
Much less daunting when you explain it. Thanks again!
Very glad it was helpful!
Good game. Scoring is a bit tricky, and you have to pay attention to a lot of things all at once. Like I like to say, it has a lot of moving parts! We played three times the first two days we had it! So it is definitely fun! It’s a thinking game for sure!
Glad you've been enjoying it Frank!
I am going to try solo play. See how it goes.
About time! I... I mean... Thank you very much Mr. Smith :D
You're very welcome :)
Thank you for introducing this game. I love the concept! Will you be doing a play through?
We'll see :)
As always, the best!
Very kind of you to say Bruno!
This is amazing thank you!
Very glad you enjoyed!
The expansion also adds a 5th player.
Couple of quick questions:

If I do buy a trait card then I will move the alignment marker twice ? Once for using the skill and once one for the trait ?

Thank you, Rodney, for this How to Play! Clear and concise as always.
In your personal opinion, what's the ideal number of players for this game?
Thanks for the kind words :) On this channel, I avoid offering personal opinions or recommendations, as I find every gamer is quite different in their tastes, and what one person would find fun at one player count, another would disagree with - so I tend to avoid those discussions.
I would say three or four, simply because it gives you more options for dice colors you may need for your Backstory, as well as more options for cards to buy from the Market.
This game looks awesome!
Pretty expensive, though ($64 for the base game in my country). Might pick it up one day if I’m feeling particularly frisky.
You might enjoy our play through to get a taste of it.
It's a great game but the expansion takes it to a new level.
Any way you can explain Puerto Rico? That would be so helpful! Love your videos!
We don't usually pre-announce our games, so I can't say for sure. Thank you for the interest though!
This looks fun! Have you done a video for Quarriors? I bought it a few years ago, and we never got around to learning. Your videos are easily the best tutorials
Thanks for the kind words. I haven't done a video for that one.
Thank you Rodney 👍🏼
You're welcome Yaqoob!
Cool! A game is planned next week! :)
Hope you have a great time playing!
Are you thinking of doing a How to Play of Azul?
Thanks for the interest Matthew. I avoid pre-announcing games I might feature as my schedule can change and I don't like to disappoint.
I understand! Thank you for replying!
You bet!
Azul is a GREAT game.
Will you consider doing Folklore the Affliction how to play video?
I avoid pre-announcing games I might cover, as my schedule can change and I don’t want to disappoint.
If you have the gold, can you buy more than one card from the Market on your turn?
Nope. You’ll find this outlined at 10:35.
In constitution row 9:09 do we have the choice of increasing / decrasing or do we have to do both ?
Hey Martin, you can only do one or the other, not both.
Excellent! Can you please do one for Archipelago. I can’t understand the rules :’(
Thanks for the interest Jalal. I avoid pre-announcing games I might feature as my schedule can change and I don't like to disappoint.
INTIMIDATE: Go for the eyes Boo, go for the eyes!
I see you're a man of exquisite taste
What is the point of the 1 player game, other than creating characters to be used in other games?
As it turns out, lots of gamers enjoying playing board games solo. I don't do it very often, but I know several people who really enjoy that style of board gaming.
Can you do the expansion too?
Hey Milan, thanks for the interest. I don't tend to cover expansions.
Notification powers!
How do you rate as a solitaire game?
Regards
J
Hey Jeremiah, I avoid reviewing or recommending on this channel. That aside, I haven't tried it solo.
13:22 the german rules saying 'reveal new market cards..." But not 'discard the remaining card...?
I can't really comment on the German rules, I'm afraid.
Ahhh I was hoping you would have played the human female. It’s my faaaace :D
Really? If so, that's pretty cool!

The base game Roll Player, you dont do anything? Just see who has the most points in the end? You'd need an expansion to fight characters / enemies?
I'm not quite sure what you mean by "you don't do anything". In the base game you build a character. The theme of the game is seeing who can earn the most points through the creation of their character. Later expansions introduced the idea of introducing monsters, etc.
This game screams DnD and I'm really torn between spending time playing DnD or playing this game...
You could use this to create some characters, and then play D&D with those characters! The expansion also adds a bit of adventuring and fighting monsters.
Huzzah!
Sagrada or Roll Player?
I avoid reviewing on this channel, so can't help you there - that said, I've got videos for both, so you can see them in action and help decide which might appeal to you more.
Nevertheless, thank you for your answer. And thank you for your great videos!
For a veteran gamer like me, who enjoys spending the first 30 hours of games like Skyrim in the character creation screen, this game fits like a glove. 😂😂😂
Thanks for checking out the video :)

So if I go to the grocery store with a crossbow, I get to pay less?
That's the less we've learned today.
So basically, need very specific item set up?
Thanks to Nick for the assist on this one!
Interesting how they followed D&D so extremely closely with the races and attribute names and 9 alignments and so on.
Sad there isn't a combat element without an expansion.
But at least there IS the expansion
