    I am SO THANKFUL for you letting us know roughly how long the kodiak will run with a c-pap machine. I've been trying to find out but couldn't find anyone. You are the ONLY person that has broken it down for us. THANK YOU. Great video !!!!

    I bought a Kodiak and am impressed with the unit itself, technically it seems quite solid.
    Where they have utterly failed with me is support. I live in Canada so it does make it a bit more difficult for them, for shipping and warranty work, however many companies have overcome the USA and Canadian border issues which they severely struggle with.
    1. One of the items I purchased was the 12 volt car adapter which I tested when the unit arrived and it worked. I take it camping with us, plug it in and no blue light on the side. Push down on the cable/connector in the cigarette lighter, hear a click and the blue charge light comes on. I took the adapter apart and it turns out they had surface soldered one of the cables to a chrome arm inside the connector. The solder was the only thing providing structural support/integrity for that cable and it failed miserably. They had not even gone to the minimum of where they wrapped the copper wire around the conductor inside the cable (for strength) and soldered it.
    2. I phoned their help line, they were apologetic and shipped me a replacement cable. It arrived with custom fee's owing and it turned out not to be a cable, rather they had shipped me a 4 in 1 converter box.
    3. Phone them again, they were apologetic and shipped me a replacement cable. Replacement cable does not work. Plug in old mostly non working cable, push down on wire so it makes contact with the conductors in the adapter, hear click, see light come on. Put new cable in, still does not work.
    4. I phone their help line, they are apologetic and ship me a replacement cable again. It arrives with duty owing and does not work.
    5. To say I am irritated with them by now is a bit of an understatement. I am thinking that cables for an outdoor product should by design be extremely rugged and durable, not something that fails in shipment by UPS.
    6. I was going to phone their help line again, however a shipment that I and they did not know about arrived. It was approximately 3 weeks old and was likely the original replacement cable.
    7. I am not sure if any of these cables work at the moment as my Kodiak died while I was charging an Anker battery at a campground. The only thing that seems to work on the unit is if I plug a power source into the side the blue charge light comes on.
    8. The Kodiak died August 15, 2018, I phoned them from the campground and started the return process for work under warranty. When we arrived back home I sent all the confirming information to them by email, return address etc around August 17, 2018.
    9. It is now September 17, 2018 and they are still very apologetic but the BROKEN unit is still sitting at home waiting for them. Much blaming the Canadian government for having strict rules in place for shipping charged and dangerous lithium ion batteries across the border, much blaming their shipping and receiving unit which is so bad they are restructuring it.
    10. It is so irritating that it has become a comedy of errors in it's own right. Every time they say they are going to ship me something so I can return it, I have to phone them at least weekly and prompt them. I was sent a set a box with foam inserts to return the unit, you would think they would include the UPS return labels in the box. No such luck, the labels had to be sent separately and I had to prompt them for those.
    11. The UPS labels arrive with instructions on how to fill them in and where to place them on the box. I do so and phone their support line to make sure everything is in place for the return. The normal support fellow is off for the week and no one else knows anything about the labels? He will be back in a week though. I get an email from some one inside Inergy saying that yes everything is fine and we will schedule a pick up. This does not happen.
    12. I phone back, the regular guy is back and he tells me that they are going to use a "new" to them shipping agent called DHL. DHL will send them labels which they will fill out and send to me. I wait, finally phone them back and well you know DHL sent us the wrong labels, it is not our fault. When we get the right labels we will send them to you by the slowest and cheapest method possible. But for sure they will be their in a week.
    13. It has only been 2 or 3 business days since my last call to them, however I have not received an email with a tracking number or any indication that the labels have shipped and the end of the weeks seems like it has already slipped.
    I like the Inergy Kodiak, it seems like a nice unit, however with all the issues I have had with the "Company" I regret buying it.
    For what it is worth I could have bought a brand new Honda EU 2000 along with a multi fuel kit for it, which would let me run it off of gas, propane or natural gas.
    Follow Up:
    We had a 3 Tornadoes touch down where I live in the same day, power out, homes wiped off the face earth, usual extreme tornado conditions. It took an event like this before Inergy said we will ship you your replacement, while we are waiting for the proper paperwork for the border/customs people. To give them credit they did ship a new one for which I am grateful.
    I started the return process around August 16, 2018, it is now November 20th, 2018 and the paperwork has not yet arrived.

      Yes, thank you for taking the time. I’m charging by wall outlet for the second time on a brand new unit (Kodiak not Apex) and it’s not charging, no blue light.... ugh!!! I will post here what happens and I think I will send them a copy of your situation and ask them to keep an wye out for these errors. I’m in the states so we’ll see if that was actually part of their issue.

    Brad, just make a little black rectangular plastic shield for over the LED readout and tape it at the top edge of the unit with electrical or duct tape, like a hinge. Flip it down , it covers the LED readout and no danger of over heating unit as it only covers the readout.

    Dear Santa, Please bring one of these to my house?
    Wow, I would love to have one of these ahead of hurricane season!
    When Irma showed herself and wiped the power out in my neck of the woods, (south Ga.), I was the only one on my
    block with no power.
    I paid my neighbor $20.00 to "borrow" his gas generator for maybe three hours or so plus gas.
    Then wound up borrowing one from a friend because Mrs. Cravits didn't want me to run hers all night because of the noise....
    Yeah, I need one! Thanks for sharing this info, Brad
    Peace and Love

    • @Bigfamilyhomestead

      That really depends on how you use it- A few LED lightbulbs will last days, while running a small fridge will last significantly longer.

    We have one small panel that we hook up to an rv solar battery. Can we use that solar panel, or a few of them daisy chained with this generator? Sounds much better than carrying a the big battery around.

    • @Bigfamilyhomestead

      Yes. The system allows for up to a total of 600 watts of panels.

      I have. It's to unreliable for my taste- Not know if you will have wind... My "ideal" would be solar and wind together.

    My wife and I are working on a camper van. We're 70yo. We need to power lights, a fan and maybe a 500w heater. Would you still recommend the Kodiak?
    Of course. Other uses will come up, such as phones, cpap, etc. If there is a REALLY low power refrigerator, thats cool too.

    • @WookieSenshi
      @WookieSenshi 6 лет назад

      You should be just fine. The Kodiak can handle up to 1100 Watts continuous. You'll probably not even hit three-quarters of that.

    • @ekoms108
      @ekoms108 6 лет назад

      This will work but you have to get a propane heater because the Kodiak can't handle that heater. The would be depleted in 2 hours

    My husband says it helps to be an electrician. Solar is part of your education. So just find a Tech school. A electricians course is only like 30,000 dollars and you walk away understanding stuff you never thought you would. Lol. Or just find an electrician who is willing to talk you through all of it. They tend to be tight lipped. Thats how they make their money.

  • @sfetterly6200
    @sfetterly6200 6 лет назад

    Lithium ion batteries are much more forgiving than lead acid batteries are to over charging ... but does this unit have an over charge protection ability??? Many larger solar controllers have a circuit that allows the batteries to discharge to a large resister thereby saving the batteries from being overcharged. I have a homemade unit similar to the one you're showing, but it is a bit more bulky than that one.
    Thank you for the video, I've been interested in all things solar energy and it was why I went to college and got my Electrical Engineering degree starting in 1989 ... not many instructors back then saw a future in solar ... but I did.

    • @Bigfamilyhomestead
      @Bigfamilyhomestead  6 лет назад

      Yes, it has charge protection built in. I have been into solar for years too, love it. I can't wait for the battery technology to really arrive, that will change everything.

    • @ekoms108

      @@sfetterly6200 you have misinfo. MPPTs controllers all have overcharge protection, its called float mode. Second, what you are refeering to where you can hook something up to use up the extra power, that's only necessary for wind turbines. You don't have to worry about the extra energy from a solar panel.

    It is very expensive. I bought one now I am completely regretted. The warranty is very bad. I got one 10 months ago. Now it is going to the dumpster. They told me if it is good they are going to charge me. I told them that I tested it 5 times and the external battery connection does not work. In other words I do not recommend it at all.

    • @Bigfamilyhomestead
      @Bigfamilyhomestead  6 лет назад +1

      It's my understanding that it's not time based, but cycles of use from charged to discharged. I think you would not need it every day, or even drain the batteries for every use... that would make it last much longer :)

      @stevesheridan3511 6 лет назад +2

      Big Family Homestead if you have some time you might want to look into it. I just read multiple articles about batteries lithium compared to the nickel cadmium and all the other stuff. Disadvantage of lithium short life, and it does not matter with the cycles like it does with nickel caddy or some others. It's just the lifespan of the lithium battery.
