My favourite film of all time; love John Hughes and John Candy, love this music, love the sentiment and moral messages of this film. Beneath what many see as a standard 80s comedy, there was an undercurrent of deep truths about humanity and our natures; through social comparison it highlights how many of us take our luck for granted and only see the bad parts of our journey and lives, when really we need to give thanks and gratitude. It also teaches us how when we are travelling, and strangers seem so distant, how if we just got to know people there are so many friends out there to find. Also, how nobody is perfect; Del Griffith with all of his flaws and bad habits appears a nuisance, but when you get to know him, is a kind and gentle soul in a rough brutal world. He's lost everything, he has no home, hes a widower to his beloved, he has confidence and self esteem issues, but he doesn't take his misfortunes out on others, like so many in his position may. He is benevolent in nature and sticks by his morals and values, and there is a very strong unbreakable character beneath his humble persona, that has been through so much and is still smiling. In the car alone, when it's snowing, he questions his self-worth which is tragic and upsetting, as it shows that even though he's strong, there is vulnerability in us all, but he doesn't let bad times break his positive spirit and cheer; hes almost like the spirit of thanksgiving, Buddha or Christmas embodied. It's a bit like John Coffey or Jesus; like the guiding spirit of virtue is embodied in an unlikely hero. Upon first viewing, Neil Page appears the 'normal' one as his cynicism is relatable to us but really he is the Grinch, and though he has everything you could wish for; beautiful wife and kids, lovely mansion and high-flying job - he is often grumpy, miserable, negative and selfish. He is slightly nihilistic and misanthropic and avoids people if possible. He looks over all the great stuff he has and only sees upward social comparisons; this highlights the workaholic, wall street type psychology of the 80s and many of us working people in the west. I find it humbling and beautiful how Neil with all of his success and money learns invaluable lessons from a homeless man; on the surface Del Griffith is an imbecilic comedy character to many viewers but deep down he is so wise. He is almost 'sent down' to help Neil, and I feel the soothing female vocals in this song 'Del's theme', create the imagery of a guiding spirit for Neil and their journey together that teaches him to appreciate what he has; thanksgiving - the undercurrent of the movie. Thank you John Hughes for your moral lessons to us all and to John Candy for your lovable self. RIP John Hughes and John Candy.
Alex Toast prolifically said, this is how I try to see everyone, never judge a book by its cover. The best stories are often the dog eared novels most would pass over for prettier covers. I love this movie, I love how you summarized it so eloquently. Thank you, I'm going to watch it again.
Man, this music really makes me cry with tears. The 80s synth (Yamaha and Korg) really had so much soul and emotions to the sounds. Very melancholic. Amazing piece after all these years.
james sheldon Thanks for name dropping the synth brands. I'm trying to read up on old school synthesizes and which ones have what sound. And I agree, there's something oddly ethereal about those cold synth sounds. The name of the album this was from, "The Morning Lasted All Day," I always felt was appropriate because this seems like the kind of music that could score a cold early morning.
Hi James Sheldon, Very nicely said! I also cry with tears during this scene when Niel starts having the flashbacks on the train, the music really provides that swelling of emotion so perfectly! It's nice to see that others feel the same way about this 80's syth music too!

Every time I see John I break down crying. He was my childhood. He taught me to laugh and not hold back. John had something no other actor had, a heart of pure gold.
"Well Marie, once again my dear, you where as right as rain. I am, without a doubt, the biggest pain in the butt that ever came down the pike. I meet someone whose company I really enjoy, and what do I do? I go overboard. I smother the poor soul. I cause him more trouble than he has a right to. God, I got a big mouth. When am I ever gonna wake up? I wish you were here with me right now. But... I guess that's not gonna happen. Not now, anyway."
I was born 1987... and when I hear this music it wraps around my heart and it tells my soul: "It's gonna be alright... everything is gonna be alright in the end."
David Graham: I hear ya man, I'm 38 myself. I find it amusing but also bittersweet irony that many younger people I've met in the last couple of years wish to God they could've lived back then.
You just feel so sad for Del Griffith, and to an extent, John Candy himself. The poor guy just wanted to make people smile with his silly, and sometimes really dumb humor, but also... his infinite amount of optimism and warm hearted nature. I could say the same for his role in Uncle Buck where he went from a sleazy, uptown arrogant slob to a very well-grounded father figure for his nieces and nephew, especially Tia. That's why I've always loved John Candy, and I miss him to this very day... RIP John, Gone way too soon, but never to be forgotten...

My favorite road trip comedy, John Candy at his very best, he was such a national treasure to cinema, I am still saddened by his sudden passing in '94, even though I was only 1 yr old at the time. But just seeing him in this film always brings me to tears.

What’s sad is you inherit your parents home after their loss (2 days apart...November, before Thanksgiving) & yet you still feel that You haven’t been home in years. A mix of sad & sweet there are signs of their imprint for years to come, trying to slowly in my own time, make my imprint on this home & world. My parents also loved this movie & John Candy & Steve Martin. John had this way of communicating his soul with his eyes that was genuine. I may have to have a therapeutic cry fest this weekend. Love everyone, while you have them, you never know when you’re going to lose them.
The 80s The Golden era one of the best movies ever. todays movies don't even come close. John Hughes best director ever!!! Life is short death is certain Jesus is the Cure. John 3:16
The day after this was uploaded my Da showed me this movie and we watch it every Christmas Eve ,even if it's a Thanksgiving we don't have that here so Christmas works. Although I could watch this any day.
John Hughes didn't have a huge filmography but what he lacked in quantity he made up for in quality. Classic movies like Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and PTA. He struck the perfect tone with PTA great casting with Steve and John. It's one of those rare movies that can bring both the laughs and the feels. The scene where Del opens up about his past always gets to me. And right before with Neal, he's on his way home on the tram he's desperate to get home and yet...he still comes back for Del. Great character development from where he was in the beginning.
Because he finally had grown enough as a person to put two and two together, and understand what Del really was. When he came back and asked him, "Del... what are you doing here?" he already knew the answer. But he wanted to hear it from Del. And Del told him. He was a lost soul on a forever-Wander, ripped in two by the death of his wife. All that chatterboxing was a mask and a shield, not just annoying quirk. He's a truly tragic figure. And Neal saw, at last... he had it in his grasp to save the life of a good man. And that's just what he did. ( Trivia: Neil wasn't actually on a tram, but a heavy-rail, elevated rail system known as the "El," that goes back all the way to Chicago's founding. The El often connects with Metra, which is the diesel-powered regional train system. Not dissimilar to the Tube and the regional high speed lines in London ).

I was lucky enough to be born in 1967, so I was able to spend my teen years and early 20s in the 1980s. It was a great decade, especially to be that age. I miss it.
Thanks for posting this. I had always loved the music from this scene but didn't realize it was from Dream Academy. I had searched for it but didn't come across it until I was searching for lost music videos of the 80's. The full version of the song was in the list and then I found this instrumental version. The shot of him sitting by himself is the most dynamic part of the scene I think. I think I'm gonna either name my next grandson Owen...:). Thanks again!

"You're not saint. You got a free cab. You got a free room. And someone who will listen to your boring stories! I mean, didn't you even notice on the plane when you started talking, eventually, I started reading _THE VOMIT BAG?_ Didn't that give you some sort of clue like, "Hey, maybe this guy's not enjoying it?" You know, everything is not an anecdote! You have to discriminate! You choose things that are funny, or mildly amusing, or interesting. You're a miracle! Your stories have _NONE OF THAT!_ They're not even amusing _ACCIDENTALLY!_ "Honey, I'd like you to meet Del Griffith! He's got some amusing anecdotes for you! Oh, and here's a gun so you can blow your brains out! You'll thank me for it!" I mean, I can tolerate any insurance seminar. For days, I could sit there and listen to them go on and on with a big smile on my face. They'd say "How can you stand it?!" And I'd say "Cause I've been with Del Griffith. I can take anything." And you know what they'd say? They'd say "I know what you mean, the "shower curtain ring guy"! WHOA!" It's like going on a date with a Chatty Cathy doll. I expect you to have a little string on your chest, you know where they pull out and have to snap back. Except I wouldn't pull it out and snap it back, _YOU WOULD! AGH! AGH! AGH! AGH!_ And by the way, you know when you're telling these little stories? Here's a good idea: _HAVE A POINT!_ It makes it so much more interesting for the listener!" "...You wanna hurt me? TheNisgaa May he rest in peace
One of the greatest movies of all time, and the music fit the scene perfectly.
Here's a good idea: _HAVE A POINT!_ It makes it so much more interesting for the listener!"
"...You wanna hurt me? Go right ahead, if it makes you feel any better. I'm an easy target. Yeah, you're right. I talk too much. I also listen too much. I can be a cold-hearted cynic like you, but I don't like to hurt people's feelings. Well, you think what you want about me, I'm not changing. I like... I like me. My wife likes me. My customers like me. Cause I'm the real article. What you see is what you get."
THE OFFICIAL TBONE2004 I always tell people that I'm plain me, what you see is what you get, I may have gotten that line from this movie. God I miss the 80's & the depth of the films & music. Everything meant something then.
..such a great scene of dialog,, comedy and saddness and later forgiveness
I cry at this part every dang time!
@@LeeB5 Every DANG time!

I haven't been home in years.
Very beautiful instrumental
I’m not gonna lie everytime I drive home to my parents house for Thanksgiving I always have this tune jamming in my head while thinking of the ones I love.
John Candy is a legand. Planes, Trains, and automobiles is classic along with Uncle Buck.
Just watched them both. Love those movies
RUclips really need to introduce a love button!!!!
One of my all time favorite movies! So sad that John Candy and John Hughes are both gone. They both went way too soon. Rest In Peace
My absolute must watch at Thanksgiving through Christmas. I remember this being at my local theater on the reader board.
Soooooo PERFECT
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
Looking at nostalgic and soothing ghosts that are our past.
Sending out my Unconditional LOVE to anyone reading this comment. I have no real immediate family, but have a heart FULL of Love; especially to those at their lowest. You can do this, you have the ‘Power to Believe’ in yourself. ❤️❤️❤️
My mother died November 2nd this year from Ovarian cancer. It was such a horrific last month and she suffered a lot. When she passed away it was bitter sweet cause now she is not in pain and in heaven with her mom, dad, and brother. I miss you mom so much and love you, this song always makes me cry when i hear it. It brings back you back and all the memories. Im crying now. Love you mom.

"I haven't been home in years... I haven't been home in years... I haven't been home in years...."
Haunting. And Neal knows deep down he has to know the truth. He cares enough for Del to want to know the truth.
Very fine piece of music. And the movie is awesome, they rarely do those kinds of movies anymore. They were a very 80's/90's thing.
Hermoso tema! gracias! Beautiful song! Thank you!
May re-watch this today...I need a good therapeutic cry
This will probably play on my funural in the background. As people walk and speech of how they remeberd the good times. "We will remember him not as a coward. But a fighter".
