No longer in production but if you can find a good used one then the Yaeus FT857D (Shack in a box) is tough to beat. $650 should find a descent one.

I had one of Xiegu G90's baby brothers (the 108). As a radio, it worked rather well, no qualms on what any other 20w radio could achieve, but a few gripes. the menu was terrible, and the screen and buttons were tiny, which made actually using it in the field, especially in the dark, a real nightmare. on one field trip, it managed to crack the LCD, loose a few of the buttons, and dent the rotary encoder. UI build quality, Not Great. this is with the wings installed and transported in a stiff body laptop bag. a little disappointing, my only other radio was a 2m HT, and Id kinda gone deliberately to a radio quiet spot for a DXpedition, not much goin on out there. fortunately there were other people and other recreations.
the x5105 looks likes it solves most of those issues, but with only 5w, I wonder how well It will get out? Im in Southern Australia, and can get Europe and the US with a sufficiently beefcake antenna on 20w. Not a great signal, but a contact none the less.
I should probably just get the PLL mod for my clansman working properly...

For working people $100 is a big deal. For married people $100 is a big, big, big deal.

sure but there isn't really any hf radio for $100 unless you can find a very old second-hand somewhere

@@WhollyOutdoor the trusdx gets pretty close if you don't mind (or if you enjoy) the limitations.
