Dude! I think this literally gave me the motivation to get my general license, mainly due to the cost! Seriously! Built in antenna tuner is a steal for me!

Pay the extra and get a Yaesu FT 857D..Thanks for the upload.. 73s HS0ZOU. Subbed ..
I have to agree with you on this as I have sold the house and now moved into a apt. I've got one and it does not have the QRP feel. I have checked into the YL net on both the 7300 and G90 barefoot and they both perform well. The 7300 hears way better but at my location means my noise floor is that much higher. However, I have not seen an instance (yet) where the 7300 and G90 have not got equal reports from the reporters. @@cliffbatson Yes, I am trying to get it on Wspr for antenna testing during the day. I trust leaving it on. My main goal was to get a low power station for Wspr and some FT8. I will probably bring on POTA activations as well but I have an FT-891 and so I am torn. The G90 has the waterfall built in and is easier to use in some respects than the 891.
Great Review 👍 I really like the G90 qrp with waterfall. Sure you must have a lightweight lithium ext battery but Hey you get a waterfall !! I like this but I also like the ultra portability of the x5105. I need both. The G90 for running around on my 4 wheeler at camp. And the X5105 for backpacking. I can leave my icom 7300 hooked up at home. Plus it has it fantastic internal auto tuner. How this one Is better than the Icom705 is that the Xiegu G90 and the Xiegu X5105 have an internal antenna tuner and the icom 705 does not. plus the fact that if you really need it you can crank the Xiegu G90 up to 20 W in an emergency if you need it but the icom 705 is stuck down at 5 watts. However if you want to stay in the 5 watt qrp range saving battery the Xiegu g90 can do it. 😁
I am working on getting my General Class. I have been into CB since 1990's. I am on a really tight budget. The fact that this does all of HF except 6m and has a built in tuner made it a no brainer for me. 20 watts is plenty I can build or purchase an amplifier when I need one. I was thinking about getting a lower priced HF or HF+6 mobile radio to use. None of them had the combination of power and features at even close this price point. I will build a G5RV or long wire.
Had a G90 now for a month (UK) and I'm really pleased with it. Runs happily of 12 motor cycle battery, CW decoder works very well and the mic gives a good clean audio output according to reports I get. Digital was new to me but not difficult to sort out FT8 works fine. Great value for money.
Hi Josh How much more does the data interface cost? I like the low rx current, removable head, but the Xiegu data interface really puts me off. How about a review from the field?
Really nice looking radio. Look forward to getting one. I hope they add a USB Sound Card to the radio. With 20 watts it would make a great digital radio in the field without dragging extra cables and such. Thanks for the video. 73 Joe
I came from Ft857d originally and always wanted to mess with QRP and the FT-817 this is way better than a 817 for a features list.. Great for beginners, beginners starting on FT817 were always disappointed being limited to 5 watt QRP. 20 watts can do allot. Heck 12 watts on a SSB CB can do allot.. I think they have the perfect starter radio here. HF mild but decent wattage and a live waterfall.. all in a small portable package.. The way they could improve this and make it really flippen desirable by all HAM's, incorporate digital into one USB connection to a PC... 20 watts for digital modes is Flippen perfect! I'd buy that just for digital stuff.
I am new to Ham and I love the look of this radio very much but would have to bring the power down to 10w for my licence. Happy Christmas. Motters M7TRS 73's
Error 404 File not found on your G90 link. Just thought you should know. I am strongly considering this for my HF intro after I pass the general in August. Thanks for a very informative video.
ElfNet Designs hand held HF? What model was that? I have a youkits “handheld” and still used to hook up to a dipole. Or a whip with great grounding/ counterpoise
Thanks for the well done and informative video. For the price, I see this as a great little radio to use in the field. I just hope the first note on CW key up is not truncated like it is on the X5105. I so much wanted the 5105 but the truncation issue, as pointed out in QST was a deal breaker for me since I only use CW for QRP. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos. Barry, KU3X/QRP
Hey Josh, after a few weeks of crunch time I'm catching up on some of your videos. How would this fit with an emergency kit? My focus is on portability right now so this has my interest, but I'm going to be limited to one HF radio for a bit.
I've had a Yaesu 8800 and FT-60 since June 2014. To this day, I still can't remember how to program them and change functions. It confuses me so much that I only have 4 freq's programmed in to each one. I don't even monitor them any more. How Josh flies through all these rigs is mind boggling. Amazing
@@HamRadioCrashCourse LOL! It doesn't hurt! I'm not a fan of my Yaesu's. The knobs are backwards for me (the 8800 volume is on bottom w/vfo on top, and the ft60 volume is between the vfo and antenna. Just backwards). My brain just doesn't connect with these 2 rigs. I liked my FT-2000 HF rig when I had it though. I'll most likely dump the Yaesu's and get the TM-V71 and K20A.
You said the rear port was an “I/O”. I saw “I/Q” which is a great feature that you didn’t co er if it is really an I/Q port which outputs spectrum sweep display to an external monitor/PC.
I was interested in getting one of these for field day and parks on the air. However, one of the guys in my ham radio club said that this wasn't a good field day radio because the waterfall display just turned blue on his during field day. My first thought was that the scale on his waterfall display was probably not calibrated properly. Any thoughts?
Mark Wickland if you get a ham license your name and address is attached to that license and visible for anyone who searches your license number, my suggestion to anyone getting a ham is to use a p.o. box for security reasons.
But what can you hear ? . I just bought a Tecsun PL-660 to go on a cruise. All the main SW stations have closed and even AM in Italy and Croatia have gone on line. From my home in England I only get China and Bulgaria on SW. I can just tell my phone ,' Play WNYC' !
The G90 is an amateur band radio. So it works in the amateur frequency spaces. With the PL-660 you can operate in SSB and get some of what is going on in those band too. The G90 is a transceiver of course.
Is this radio full 0-30MHz, 6m TX? Will this radio work for SSB and 11m (CB)? I have an Amateur Extra license and I am considering this as a portable or secondary mobile rig, but it must do CB too. Thanks for the video.
When you are doing digital, FT8 or psk31 how many watts are you running?? My wife has ordered me one of these for Father’s Day. Was just wonder if I can run it at the full 20 watts or do I need to turn it down to do the digital? Thank you BJ KE0FQS
Now that MFJ is no more where do you recommend buying from? I am interested in this radio and I realize it is available from multiple sources online. I just don't know where will give customer support if needed?
Hello, and nice review. I am on searching to have a base station to my house and i think this brick is the best value for money. Well i have a question and maybe you have a solution for me. The situation is that the distance between my antenna and the house is about 40 meters and the losses will be huge unless i spent money on cable which is out of my budget. The cable which uses the front panel is it possible to make a long one?? What kind of signals are passing through?? If they are some kind of differential maybe it will work. If yes so i can install the main brick close to antenna. thanks in advance Niko (i hope it worth the try)
Yeah maybe but the unspoken fact is that MFJ is a low rent company too. They been around longer but that means nothing when your product quality standard is next to nil.
ElfNet Designs it’s better than learning mandarin and trying to get something done outside the US. At least MFJ will replace if all else fails. Problem with that is after the warranty ends good luck with servicing.
I really like your videos on RUclips. I recently bought the Xiegu G90 with the data expansion port. I am wondering about the pieces for the digital. I found a Sabrent USB to microphone and speaker. But I cannot seem to find the 3.5mm stereo male plug to twin 3.5mm stereo male plugs cable. Did you make this cable yourself or did you buy it from somewhere ?
I am totally green to this SSB HF ham radio stuff...I have ordered the G90 in hopes of mounting on my sailboat. Just a couple of questions if you would be so kind to help....Can I power this unit from the boats onboard 12V battery system? Will I need anything other than an external antenna to be up and running?
I would like to get one of these; I live in a condo with a large balcony. Which antenna would you recommend that is easily set up and taken down as I won't be able to leave up permanently?
What other than a PC/software, antenna, & PS would be required to use this SDR Transceiver for HF digital (JS8CALL)? Is a sound card such as Signlink required? Or can this take the digital signal directly out of the PC?
Thanks for the review, really encouraging! In a very sincere spirit of helping, the pronunciation for Xiegu is quite far from that though. Putting 协谷 in Google Translate will allow it read it aloud to you; very roughly it's more like 'see-yeah goo', with almost a hiss to start, and a hard g for the gu. On the air it could get pretty confusing when there are many different approaches to pronouncing the manufacturer name!
I pair up my G90 with a hardened power systems revolt G2 battery for a great portable solution which will run for hours before recharge. Include a small laptop, folding solar panel, EF dipole and you have a pretty good field combo that does not weigh you down. I hope ICOM, Yeasu and others are paying attention. This product hits right on a market niche. Improvements in the future would be on board USB sound card, a little weatherproofing, a bigger display and up the watts to about 50. That would be a do it all machine. It would be like my IC 7300, only smaller and more portable.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse I don't think it would be too much a stretch to "amp up" some improvements to a G90 like machine. A blend of both capabilities of a G90 and a FT 891 would be killer.
G2 battery is a 58wh ruggedized unit from Hardened Power Systems. It has a 20 amp circut and can handle up to around 100 watts rf. It also has USB charging ports.
Technically, you are correct, but the jack puts out earphone level power. There isn’t enough power for an un-amplified speaker. I tried the resistor mod, but must have done it wrong because it didn’t work.

What do you mean but the 705 only being at 5 watts?
I am working on getting my General Class. I have been into CB since 1990's. I am on a really tight budget. The fact that this does all of HF except 6m and has a built in tuner made it a no brainer for me. 20 watts is plenty I can build or purchase an amplifier when I need one. I was thinking about getting a lower priced HF or HF+6 mobile radio to use. None of them had the combination of power and features at even close this price point. I will build a G5RV or long wire.
Thanks for this, found it really useful.
Hi Josh
How much more does the data interface cost? I like the low rx current, removable head, but the Xiegu data interface really puts me off. How about a review from the field?
Definitely in the works! I’m going to try to run the usb audio for ptt through the adapter and see if it works that way too.
Forgot to mention the interface is $30.00. www.mfjenterprises.com/Product.php?productid=XCE-19
How would this SDR Radio work with JS8CALL? Our group is looking for the simplest system to use only JS8CALL for E-Comms.
Thanks for this.
Thanks for the review - I've been looking for a low power (and low cost) HF rig for my RV - and this could be it! - 73's G7DMQ
Really nice looking radio. Look forward to getting one. I hope they add a USB Sound Card to the radio. With 20 watts it would make a great digital radio in the field without dragging extra cables and such. Thanks for the video. 73 Joe
Very very informative video! Thank you
Liked and subscribed, just ordered one of these.
Congrats, its a fun radio!
Great video Josh! I'm not new to HF, but i think it would be good for me. :)
Huge missed opportunity not having a USB port for native digital ops without an interface!
That would raise the price by at least $100.00. Do you think that adding more stuff costs nothing?
@@ronstar7027 With the processor it has on board, you wouldn't need to add $100 worth of stuff, just add it in software. USB ports cost maybe $5 max.
Great video! Thanks for sharing with us!! 73
Just ordered my G90 a few hours ago.
how do you like it so far?
@@ChrisGillenwater1 I love it!
HAHAHA Love the AVE ruler!!! 1:37
That is a no brainer I’m dusting off my Discover Card!
Great review I think my first civil CW transceiver since I left military ops will be Xiegu G90 :-)
Interesting, and great ending!
Hah, you stayed for it!
Good review, seems like a decent rig!
Thanks!
Great review!
Thank you!
60M even. Nice. That would be a killer bugout radio. Cheers! Chris - NI7I
Thanks!
CrossWood Bugout from what or who? LOL 😆 Those scary walking dead or something much worse walking live? 😂
I am new to Ham and I love the look of this radio very much but would have to bring the power down to 10w for my licence.
Happy Christmas. Motters M7TRS 73's

Merci beaucoup ... 73
Error 404 File not found on your G90 link. Just thought you should know. I am strongly considering this for my HF intro after I pass the general in August. Thanks for a very informative video.
I'm just waiting for them to make a all band HF & VHF portable to compete against the Yeasu 817/818.
HF HTs suck ass though. I had a yeasu and I gave it to a kid down the road that got his license because it sucked on HF
ElfNet Designs hand held HF? What model was that?
I have a youkits “handheld” and still used to hook up to a dipole. Or a whip with great grounding/ counterpoise
HT? I never mentioned anything that is an HT.
No Such Thing as a YEASU anything. They do however make a YAESU. LOL
What are we thinking about this for a mobile rig? This would really tick a lot of boxes for a rig for the truck.
Thanks!
Thank you!
Radioddity has this on sale as a bundle with CE-19 for $399.00 right now.
Thanks for the video I have one, but plan on using the DE-19. Maybe you could do a video on the setup with this interface??
Thanks for the well done and informative video. For the price, I see this as a great little radio to use in the field. I just hope the first note on CW key up is not truncated like it is on the X5105. I so much wanted the 5105 but the truncation issue, as pointed out in QST was a deal breaker for me since I only use CW for QRP.
Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
Barry, KU3X/QRP
From what I have heard, that issue was fixed in later models.
Very nice nice radio the g90
Hey Josh, after a few weeks of crunch time I'm catching up on some of your videos. How would this fit with an emergency kit? My focus is on portability right now so this has my interest, but I'm going to be limited to one HF radio for a bit.
Does it do break-in CW? Does it do it with a clicking relay, or electronically? Nice review, BTW!
Amazing
I’m a huge nerd if that helps. 😅
Internal tuner and color waterfall makes it attractive to me. Thx for the video... :)
Please could you do a video on your connection & setup for FT8 please 🙏
It's a damn good radio
You said the rear port was an “I/O”. I saw “I/Q” which is a great feature that you didn’t co er if it is really an I/Q port which outputs spectrum sweep display to an external monitor/PC.
It is an iq port
I was interested in getting one of these for field day and parks on the air. However, one of the guys in my ham radio club said that this wasn't a good field day radio because the waterfall display just turned blue on his during field day. My first thought was that the scale on his waterfall display was probably not calibrated properly. Any thoughts?
Looking to get my general license soon. this seems like a great option for HF work! The display looks amazing!
Mark Wickland if you get a ham license your name and address is attached to that license and visible for anyone who searches your license number, my suggestion to anyone getting a ham is to use a p.o. box for security reasons.
@@CoGhostRider already have my license. But thank you for the tip👍
Looks very nice - but I'll wait a couple of years when all the mark 1's have failed. Is it waterproof I wonder.
Where do you go that you talk underwater?
Is this radio full 0-30MHz, 6m TX? Will this radio work for SSB and 11m (CB)? I have an Amateur Extra license and I am considering this as a portable or secondary mobile rig, but it must do CB too. Thanks for the video.
Since it covers .5-30MHz. you might get 11m support. It does not cover 6m.
No internal sound card and no 6m band, but a nice mobile rig, 4x5HF
Ilan Tsameret the only real miss for me was 6m support. There’s so much FT8 in 6m. - 73s
you don`t need 6 meters, how often is it use or available.
@@brian.7966 6M is cool.
When you are doing digital, FT8 or psk31 how many watts are you running?? My wife has ordered me one of these for Father’s Day. Was just wonder if I can run it at the full 20 watts or do I need to turn it down to do the digital?
Thank you
BJ
KE0FQS
I’ve ran it at 20w and seemed to start getting warm. I don’t see active cooling so idk I might run at 15w
Now that MFJ is no more where do you recommend buying from? I am interested in this radio and I realize it is available from multiple sources online. I just don't know where will give customer support if needed?
12volt power is selling similar items at Ham Radio Outlet and also check out Gigaparts.
Hello,
and nice review.
I am on searching to have a base station to my house and i think this brick is the best value for money.
Well i have a question and maybe you have a solution for me.
The situation is that the distance between my antenna and the house is about 40 meters and the losses will be huge
unless i spent money on cable which is out of my budget.
The cable which uses the front panel is it possible to make a long one??
What kind of signals are passing through??
If they are some kind of differential maybe it will work.
If yes so i can install the main brick close to antenna.
thanks in advance
Niko
(i hope it worth the try)
My only issue with this radio, as most Chinese radios, is serviceability. It is good that MFJ backs them up though.
Problem with that is after the warranty ends good luck with servicing.
radio tech yes. True.
I believe yes to both.
Several years later, is there anything better for the same sub $500 price?
I would like to get one of these; I live in a condo with a large balcony. Which antenna would you recommend that is easily set up and taken down as I won't be able to leave up permanently?
What part number at MFJ is the "C19" adapter? I cannot find it. Thanks
Never mind-I just saw the Xce19... Got it.
AvE measuring stick.
Impressive. 10m fm that's useful as a supplemental unit. Can you show us how hooked up to fldigi on 20 on the computer. 73
Lol, my Chinese wife told me the same thing.
The first company that can put all that together at sub-$650 is going to really have something.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse I don't think it would be too much a stretch to "amp up" some improvements to a G90 like machine. A blend of both capabilities of a G90 and a FT 891 would be killer.
What is a G2 battery?
@@tommycheshire5508 The G2 battery is a specific model from Hardened Power that is ruggedized for field use.
Great informative video. Thanks for posting.

Does this have full CAT control capabilities with WSJT-X? (Frequency control and PTT?) 73 de N1TI
Great review! Any thoughts on field antennas for it?
Oh yeah, the sky is the limit with the G90. It has a good internal tuner.
I like to the use the Wold River Coil and the Chameleon antennas.
What is a G2 battery? What would the specs of a battery for this radio? N4KBM. Thank you for your time and help.
G2 battery is a 58wh ruggedized unit from Hardened Power Systems. It has a 20 amp circut and can handle up to around 100 watts rf. It also has USB charging ports.
So I found one on Ali express for 280 taut it? They have good communication
I like the radio overall, except the lack of an external speaker jack.
The headphone jack is an external speaker jack
Technically, you are correct, but the jack puts out earphone level power. There isn’t enough power for an un-amplified speaker.
I tried the resistor mod, but must have done it wrong because it didn’t work.
Headphone amp? 🤷🏼♀️
Great job..getti g back into ham radio after a 15 year hiatus...really like your review and will watch for more...what per supply are you using..73
