I remember when Brenner died that Howard regretted that he had let such a long time go since he had last spoken with him. It was one of Howard's few true heartfelt honest moments where he admitted that, because of his personality and issues, he would often not keep in contact with people who he truly did consider friends.

David Brenner was great. He was doing observational comedy 10-15 years before it caught on in the '80s. Way ahead of his time.

I saw Brenner do his stand up act in Framingham, Massachusetts in 1977 or so. Made me laugh so hard my face and stomach muscles hurt for a week!

I will always remember this one joke. David had just done the tonight show and was riding the subway when a man came up to him and said Your funny. David said thanks very much. unfortunately the man proceeded down the car and said your funny to all the other people

I remember it was noted that Brenner never used to tell jokes, rather he would tell funny stories or anecdotes. So this one time he made a point of actually telling a joke. I don't remember the joke, I only remember that the punch line was "Tank, tank, tank." For years I've really wondered about what that joke was..

David was one of the very few old school comics, that had some clout, to support Howard right from the beginning. Many other entertainers thought that being a guest on Howard's show would hurt their career.
