  • Edible ginger, turmeric, and sweet potatoes were grown in a modified Larry Hall method trough. The plants were automatically watered by a float valve-sump assembly. Water was caught from the greenhouse roof and supplemented with municipal water when necessary. These plants had no care whatsoever for 6 months when I was away. A slow release fertilizer and dolomite were applied to the growing medium. This method was inspired by several of Larry Hall's RUclips videos.

Thanks, Larry and especially thanks for sharing your method! You sure came up with a great way to water plants! I am also successfully growing ginger in pots by your method and hope to make a youtube when I harvest the ginger.

Dr., once again you nailed it. Thank you so very much for the teachings of your experience. I am a retired physician and I live in a 3 acre small farm in Venezuela and I’m slowly changing to your system. May the universe keep protecting you and your family for many, many, more years to come. Blessings

Nice. I started with global buckets, then Larry Hall back in '12. Helped get me where I am today. I put the float valves in the gutters themselves though. Each to their own. All the best to you.

I've grown potatoes by simply suspending from thin rope over a reservoir. Do you see shortcomings with growing ginger that way? Maybe the rhizomes would no be supported enough as they spread out?

Happy New Year, Jeb! We conducted studies on growing ginger without growing medium - www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/hawaii/downloads/Experimental%20Non-Circulating%20Hydroponic%20Methods%20for%20Growing%20Edible%20Ginger.pdf
The yield was much lower than when growing medium was used. Ginger was slow to sprout and rhizomes were small and knobby when no growing medium was used. But, it can be done. Ginger grows well in a moist climate.

Another great video, and good job on showing how the Larry Hall adaptation works well with tuberous crops. Larry seems to have a good method for growing several crops long term with little input. And, your non-circulating hydroponic method is incredible for growing without the need for potting mix or soil. I use both your's and Larry's methods in my garden.
