Professional painter for 15 years. Not sure why I watch these videos lol but maybe I’ll learn something new. Your technique is great, exactly how I paint ceilings 👍🏻 good video. You’re funny 😆
Sherwin Williams Midsouth. I like to use an 18" Colossus roller whenever possible; less likely to have roller lines, covers larger area for less neck strain. Keep lots of paint on the roller.
Love your channel so much! Watching your drywall vids has made my home renovation project bearable! And I’m excited to learn some ceiling painting tips, as I get ready to paint the rooms I just sheet-rocked. Thank you so much!
Dear Mr. Vancouver Carpenter, I don't sleep well and am an amateur drywall finisher who's now realizing that painting is part of the job. lol Anyway since i don't ever sleep I just sit down, smoke a bowl, and watch your videos like watching a netflix docuseries and I really wish more people knew about you. You're a great time, very helpful and hilarious. Maybe I'm just high but you crack me tf up. Thank you for making me a better drywaller and for making me laugh very often. Edit: 12 minutes in and I'm literally crying.
Hey bro, great videos! As a painter I have a comment: you shouldn’t have that diffuse O light, you should have a utility light, a conventional yellow halogen or a rechargeable work light. It would help you see the wet from the dry paint, and the sheen or marks. For painting ceilings a mental map is also good to keep in mind like you said. Thanks again for all the tips! A little caulk and some paint make the carpenter what he ain’t!
I usually avoid specific ceiling paint in favour of higher quality flat wall paint, as the coverage (especially when untinted) is better. I usually do cut in, but not always. If not I quickly dab the inside corners first. I tend to over do it on the back rolling too as I hate dealing with misses. To ease my neck, I sometimes look down at the floor as I do my first pass that just puts the paint on the surface. It doesn’t matter if you do that blind because you’re gonna spread it and smooth it on your two back roll passes. I also do a much wider swath (5-6 feet) so I could do the bulk of a room like that in three swaths. Sometimes I will roll my second coat perpendicular to the first so that I won’t have lap marks in the same places, but that’s only when I’m using something shinier than flat. Love the channel and your dry Canadian wit.
He had crud in his paint and you want to get that off before back rolling so he had to keep his eyes on the ceiling ( either that or he just likes complaining on his videos :-) ) !
I believe the word is "homogenous". Gotta say I love your low key sense of humour. It makes thinking about doing this so much more tolerable. Painting is not my "lane", but the job has fallen to me so any humour is a HUGE help - and your expert advice and explanation as to WHY you do things the way you do helps as well. 😁
Wow, you are so quick on that ceiling. Wish I had seen this video two weeks ago - I did the cutting in thing before first coat, and it showed. Second coat, I didn't cut in and it looked better. 😳 I work in an office so that's my excuse. Great video. 👍
The first 12 seconds of this video is everything. I’ve had chronic neck pain for 20 years, I’ve been a painter for 8years…..I shudder every time a client even speaks the word “ceiling” …I’d rather paint the entire exterior of a 3 story house on a 40ft ladder with a small paintbrush on a windy day than paint a ceiling 😆
Still watching haha. No one gets how much work and pain us painters endure. I complain to myself all day long! You are so funny!!! Darn back to the second coat. It’s called snow blind.
I like to use the Benjamin Moore Regal Select Flat for the ceilings, its just my preference and its something that my dad always used as well, there's really no splatter and the finish comes out great. While I know that buying the paint in five gallon buckets is cheaper than buying it in gallons, I prefer the gallons because they are made of metal and in the five gallon plastic buckets you tend to get more pealing paint along the sides of the bucket
That's what we use at our hotel best paint ever but we use 5g buckets but we use it so much I usually see the trash at the bottom of the bucket within a few days of painting.
I've been painting, mostly as a scenic but do regular stuff from time to time and I like your videos bc no one ever tells me the correct technique. I've been pushing and pulling the roller, silly me. I can get it done by just doing it, but now I know the correct way to do it, even though no one seems to care. Wish I was tall enough to reach the ceiling. I keep a step ladder close by.
Great video. I painted my first room ceiling with the roller over my head. Talk about pain, but then again I am 63 and a masochist. Will try the side technique. Cheers from Osoyoos!
Yooo!! Love the videos keep em coming! Instead of mashing a 9” roller into the corners maybe try a mini roller or whiz roller. I use a 4” ppg branded roller skin. Makes for less mess and still gives same speed in the process. Also get rid of those paint pans, 5 gal bucket and a paint grid for 9” set ups. You’ll speed up your process that way. If I’m running flat ceilings, I’m using PPG 6-70. Covers very well and doesn’t spit back at your face as bad as most other paints.
Roll the ceiling all in one direction first And then on second finish coat roll it perpendicular to your previous coat and you’ll get a very uniform finish .
😂 "ugh, my neck." I realize this is an older vid and you likely won't see this comment, but I had to take the time to THANK you--and your sense of humour--for keeping me sane while I restore my Mother-in-law's 1912 half lath and plaster/ half drywall previous home-owner DIYer slap-up repair job in the dining room (I encountered more than my fair share of caked on boogers, cracks/bubbles, and 20 yr old frog tape painted into the trim... Zinsser Bin has rescued me on several occasions in addition to many other tips thanks to other vids of yours. Incidentally, she chose scarlet orange to refresh the previous chalk-white ceiling and mint green walls, and cream over the banged up mahogany red varnished trim boards of which there were approx 20 vertically nailed in wainscotting-esque fashion. Used Sherwin-Williams Emerald (with a good sealing primer and x2 coats), lots of wood putty on the trim (super fun to sand down that when you miss the window to carve off the excess), took my time, and uttered expletives previously unknown to me. After 14 days straight it's actually stunning...in a good way. Wish I could post pics here. Thanks again for creating this channel to walk people through pitfalls BEFORE they happen, as well as how to fix previous mistakes. You're a godsend. P.S. you are not alone in your neck pain and I watched the entire vid.
I recommend you purchase a teeters hang up to use after you’re done to get the circulation into your neck and back. It does wonders to relieve the pain in just a few minutes use.
Love your vids and your sense of humor. Started on your drywall tips as my first time in my home resto. Now I'm watching more for entertainment (I stuck with this one all the way thru!) One wish: how about some 'inside' info on the house/project your doing. Yours? A client? Cost, time to do, etc.? Thanks

This is the best (funniest)video yet only because I know exactly what your saying painting that damn ceiling. It’s brutal! Lmao but great tips. Thanks brother
OBSERVATIONS (from a guy who's watched many paint vids on RUclips): 1.) You didn't de-lint your roller with tape to avoid the boogers. 2.) Since you don't like to cut-in with a brush, you should have used Corner+ brand rollers (as shown by Idaho Painter) that has nap on the side so it saturates the corners better 3.) You should always paint towards the window where the most light comes in in order to hide lap lines better...I don't know if you take that into account when painting a room.
Hey Ben!! I've actually been painting now for 8 years over here in newfoundland and I never have had a issue with cutting in my ceilings and rolling it and two sheen's of paint. Were also using the same ceiling paint from Sherwin Williams!!! Thanks have a great day. Love your channel and keep up the amazing work!!
You are soo funny😆hate painting ceilings! Guess what I have to do next? Now that you’ve helped me out on my drywall? Thank you for great info and videos!
Been painting since 1974, I think you’re doing a real good job for a carpenter and considering doing it with a 10 mil! You’re doing pretty much everything right. Although cutting in a room like this wouldn’t take so long. Sometime you have to cut it in if the previous painter has painted the wall paint on that first little part of the ceiling. And you are right about not looking back, that’s the worst mistake! Oh high!!!LOL Still here. Love your plastering videos, I looked you up when I was looking for tips on but joints. And I found out that I pretty much do it the same way you do. Enjoy all of your videos, keep them comming. Their are so many useless flybynighters out there! You’re definelty not one of them. I use Dulux 7700 line and it’s dead flat ‘
Love it:). Painting ceilings is why I invested in an airless sprayer 20+ years ago.. and even that makes my neck hurt😂. (also, I like using a ½" wool roller, puts more paint, evenly, doesn't freckle me, and lasts longer between fillups :-p)
I'm going to paint a ceiling 2 weeks from now, my neck is hurting just from thinking about that, so I've arranged a collegeague to help me out, hopefully I'll make it out alive.
You are so cool and funny. I watched the entire video and actually wished it would never end. No kidding! But I know your neck was killing you and you wanted out of there. You did great job too. You taught me tons before I paint my ceiling. I'm a renter but of course I still want it to look great, and you made this horrible task into something I think will be manageable! 💯
I agree with keeping a wet edge and avoiding letting the cut in dry but with flat white on ceilings even if the cut in dries and then you roll just getting close to the edge, you can't see a difference. With eggshell or semi gloss paint then that's disaster and you definitely don't want to let it dry and then roll.
Slowly working on watching all of your videos 😬 you made a good point about not cutting in. I’m in no way a pro, and have not painted many ceilings (1), but it makes sense. As well as someone living with neck pain, I definitely can sympathize. Working in awkward neck positions for an extended time can easily lay me out for a few days. What do you do to keep your neck pain in check and still keep going ? Great video, thanks 😊
I have always used drywall primer for ceilings; no paint. Easy to match if needed and always ready for paint if someone wants to paint it in the future. Do you recommend a type of paint? I have never looked into advantages of "ceiling paint"
Prime your ceiling, use PPG ceiling paint with an 18" roller and you'll never need a second coat as long as you paid attention and didn't miss any spots. Amazing results
whats PPG ceiling paint run? I use SW promar ceiling paint. I really like it but will Definity look into the PPG if the price is right. I can get the promar for 25 dollars a gallon after the sales and discard fee.
I've been thinking about the wet edge situation. If 50% of the ceiling is double painted, does the long / short dimension really plays a factor into the length of the job?
You should-be turning your roller upside down every second or two to keep it from dripping until you get it on the wall.. of course is going to drip if you're standing there like a sheep herder out in the wilderness holding a huge staff in his hand LOL . Love your videos bro.. oh...and your RIGHT..you're not a painter, but you do kick ass with drywall. Thank you bro. Oh yes ,I'm a painter. I spray all my ceilings and brush and roll my walls and trim.😉
Use the 5 in 1 tool to slip under the tabs on the bucket to open it. Also, use a lighter one-piece extension pole ~ you'll thank me later. Lastly, use a light touch on the roller and reload often ~ you'll love the finish.
Yup It’s always good to keep a brush handy to brush out any blobs or runs that may get on the wall..but I feel ya I freaking hate rolling out ceilings. My mother don’t understand why I keep putting off painting our kitchen ceiling..it’s because I’ve done hundreds in my time and I still hate it..lol
Great video...always. What do you recommend for concealing grey sanding sponge stain on newly double-primed and double-paint-coated drywall ceiling (used Sherwin-Williams multi-purpose latex based primer and S-W Cashmere latex based paint on the ceiling)? Thanx
Hi ! Great video. Wanted to ask how to deal with the ceiling paint getting onto the walls near the corners where you roll instead of cutting ? Does it get hidden when you do the wall paint if the wall paint is a different color than the ceiling paint or will it show through ? Would be really thankful if you answered as I can't find an answer to this anywhere.
Ugh, the neck pain from rolling ceilings is the worst! I’m in the process of remodeling my home and my bedroom & master bath is just about ready to be painted. It’s 25’x28’. That’s a whole lot of ceiling painting, and neck pain lol.
Moved into my new house a few months ago. I'm doing all the paint and finish carpentry. I'm in the process of painting the ceilings. Nothing worse than painting ceilings. My neck and shoulders been hurting for a few weeks.
i would rather paint a ceiling than to mud and sand a ceiling
WORD
I did all three 😭
My neck was hurting when I sanded a ceiling.
Love your commentary. It helps me explain to my wife that I'm not grumpy, I'm just painting a ceiling... haha
A healthy amount of Vancouver snarkiness. I love it.

I so appreciate your great demonstration of how to have a wet edge, and the amount of paint to have on the brush.
I feel 100% Better. Thank you,
Thanks for explaining about keeping a wet edge, and steady pressure on the roller. This tip eliminated my roller lines.

I get my ceiling paint from a local independent producer, in "Velvet", which is even flatter than "flat". The only sheen more flat is "studio".
He had crud in his paint and you want to get that off before back rolling so he had to keep his eyes on the ceiling ( either that or he just likes complaining on his videos :-) ) !
You are best for amuture painter like me. Meaning providing fine details and no assumptions. Please keep up the good work.
This is the best paint video for ceilings. Thank you!

Height is such an advantage. Except for the tendency for tall people to have back pain. That's mother nature rooting for the little guy

😂 UHG!!! Ceilings!!!
After I painted my ceiling I realized why so many painters are drunks.
Isn't everyone a drunk... lol
I’ve heard that before from the fumes…
Omg lmao.
drinking a beer while I watch this video lol

I am planning to paint the LR ceiling and you had great tips. Thank you! Really enjoyed watching this video. You are funny!
Still watching haha. No one gets how much work and pain us painters endure. I complain to myself all day long! You are so funny!!! Darn back to the second coat. It’s called snow blind.
We needed a good, long realtime paint drying video to go along with this. ;)

My favorite how to paint video! Informative and entertaining 😄 . Now I have to actually attempt to paint my ceiling 😳.
I take a 4in whizz roller for the corners and 18in roller for the bulk. Using an 18in roller cuts painting time in half and way less neck strain!

Thanks for info. I can't believe how quickly you painted the ceiling.
I recommend you purchase a teeters hang up to use after you’re done to get the circulation into your neck and back. It does wonders to relieve the pain in just a few minutes use.
I just painted a vaulted ceiling with a ton on heavy obstacles in the way. Technique was thrown out the window lol

My kids liked drawing weather maps behind the sofa with crayons and lipstick. AND lipstick lines on the back of the sofa. Gotta love 'em.

great, great vid! perfect! wonderful!!!
love your channel so much teacher you are an artist
I love it 😀is so amusing video and helpful. I will paint my ceiling soon..
I had always been told to go with the direction of the sunlight if possible to minimize seeing shadows from roller lines 🤔
Put enough coats on no marks ,don’t worry about which direction you roll ,it’s flat paint minimal reflection of light

You have leaves on trees in November at Vancouver.. .. Awesome!
Can someone please explain how him mashing the big roller in the corner does not cause track marks on adjacent wall?
I've used a Wagner paint stick tool to paint ceilings before and it works for me better than dipping paint every 30 seconds.
How deep was your paint pan ? Didn’t see you re fill it and approx how big room was and how much paint used ? Great video 👏🏽👏🏽
Dulux ceiling paint down under is fantastic ..no drips if you don't roll too fast.....nice tutorial buddy ☺☺☺☺
As a painter i can say he’s speed is like anyone’s else and important thing when you paint…don’t rush and try ALWAYS to have paint on roller.

@@vancouvercarpenter Would be nice to delegate the (paint in the a$$) work to this robot. Take a look at this ruclips.net/video/hm9ZSN37jVM/видео.html
He paints cars too?!?!
Great video...always. What do you recommend for concealing grey sanding sponge stain on newly double-primed and double-paint-coated drywall ceiling (used Sherwin-Williams multi-purpose latex based primer and S-W Cashmere latex based paint on the ceiling)? Thanx
I like to use the wooster 3/4 non bevel roller. If I'm painting the whole room you don't even have to cut in except the for the corners.
Good painting work
Imagine being able to reach up and touch the ceiling 😂 one can dream...
