- Guenther Steiner has left Haas F1 Team, so what next? Guenther was known as the "Funny guy" in F1 with a short temper, and somebody who entertained F1 fans. But Guenther Steiner's leadership has been questioned a lot over the last couple of seasons, and his time with Haas has come to an end. Ayao Komatsu will take charge of Haas as team principal, and it's an interesting change in a possible new era for Haas F1 Team. Enjoy!

People seem to forget that setting up Haas F1 team was all Guenther's work. Haas' unique low-factory model was 100% his doing. Gene was just funding, and ultimately not enough to bring the team to the next level.
But "funding" isn't that much of an issue anymore since the cost cap was introduced in '21. Almost half of that is covered by the main sponsors alone (more than $50m last season) and even 10th place in '23 "earned" Haas F1 a whopping $60m. So they're pretty much operating at cost cap level without Gene having to dig into his own pockets. There are most certainly other factors at play here, this is more about personal differences between Guenther and Gene now. (Don't forget Guenther's claim to 50% of team ownership and Gene may want to cash in/sell out now that Haas F1 is worth almost a billion.)
@@aoife1122 Haas atm is still operating below cost cap because Gene refuses to pay for it. More importantly, we're talking structural investments here. Still regulated by the FIA but outside the 135 million cost cap. Haas F1 needs to make these if it wants to up their game long-term but Gene simply doesn't care. He just wants to operate his team at a minimum to support his Haas brand, regardless of performance.

There are a lot of costs not included in the cap (biggest employees, drivers, facilities upgrades in some cases)
Just look at the pitwall dude. It's incredible they're not at the F2 pace... they can't even practice pit stops properly due to cost.
Yes efficiency is king for haas but it doesn't matter if you're 99.9% efficient while your oponent spends 4x your money and is 60% efficient

Yes Haas needs change, putting someone who has never lead a team as team principal isn't it. If the issue is the technical department then is promoting the guy responsible for it a good idea?
When I think Haas, I think of Steiner, Magnussen, and Grosjean. An iconic team, even if they had poor performances. I'm sad to see Gunther go, and honestly I'm not sure they can do well even without him. Promoting from within doesn't seem like putting in the best effort they could to turn things around. It just doesn't feel like Gene wants to want to put effort into F1, it feels more like a cash grab for him. Put in the bare minimum and get the exposure and sponsors. Meh.
It's easy to blame the team principal but from what I hear, Gunther wanted the team to spend more to be more competitive which is way more reasonable of an ask for any F1 team especially today but Gene believes they can perform with how the team is set up right now. I mean, come on, Gene has to take some flack for the team's lack of performance, even Williams and Sauber have invested way more than Haas in the past few years.

Steiner left because he couldn't get anything out of Gene Haas. Gene has zero interest in F1 other than just being in it. Steiner has clearly run out of patience with that.

There are some rumors Gunther didn’t agree with Gene about path Haas should take.
I’m afraid that Steiner was pushing for more cash to develop, and he heard big no. I don’t see it all play out good, after 2026 I bet this team would be up for sale.
This is what my thoughts are as well.
Now that it got mentioned, yeah I never felt like Gunther is the team leader kind of guy. Though I wouldn't blame him 100% for Haas' problems. Considering how close Gene and Gunther work, accountability is probably on both of them rather than just one person. And that's the problem basically. There's just no shared vision from either or both of them of what they want Haas to be. They're basically nowhere at this stage and it feels like there's no clear action plan of how to get this team moving forward, which will probably continue to be the case even with new leadership.
As a TLDR for the team, no really cares for the team anymore and no one is willing to give it the care it needs to grow and be a good team. It doesn't have some big takeover like Audi on Sauber or massive backing like Dorilton on Williams or a closer relationship with another team like Alpha Tauri to Red Bull. Of the four bottom teams, they're the ones that just draw a blank on what their big picture plan is.
Guenther was there from 2014, he was there with what existed of the team in the years they were setting up to enter in 2016
I agree, it was about time. Love the dude, he'll be missed for sure, but it was time for Haas themselves to move forward.

There is never a good time to get rid of the visionary, the hard worker that dragged this team together and then did everything he could to promote and manage it. This is about ego, Gene doesn't like his employee outshining him, and Katsui wanted to be the boss so bad and was sick of waiting. Btw, I can't stand Steiner, but he is the one bringing the sponsors and attention to this team, the drivers are boring, the results are forgettable and interest is non existent without a crazy weirdo running the show

Perhaps Gunther Steiner is even relieved. It must have been nerve wracking to have to call Gene Haas after every little set back.

It was really interesting listening to the Sky F1 podcast yesterday - they kept on about how much a personality he is - but that does not correlate to performance or leadership skills. Gene needs to get more involved I think. Can't wait for Conor Moore's impression of this haha
We knew he was bad when he was in charge at Red Bull in both F1 and NASCAR, and he was essentially just a meme factory. Like he should have been let go after 2021 when he essentially ruined the confidence of their two rookie drivers with both Mick and Nikita. And when it comes to Gene Haas, he's pretty hands-off in terms of ownership, with the NASCAR team, Stewart-Haas Racing, he lets Joe Custer and Tony Stewart do what they feel like is best for the team, and that's semi worked so far with two Cup Series championships (2011 with Tony Stewart and 2014 with Kevin Harvick) and one Xfinity Series championship (2023 with Cole Custer), but in my eyes, both of Gene Haas' racing programs are in a rebuilding period, as the Cup Series team with it's four cars (the 4 of Kevin Harvick, 10 of Aric Almirola, 14 of Chase Briscoe and 41 of Ryan Preece) didn't win anything (while both Xfinity Series cars, the 00 of Cole Custer and the 98 of Riley Herbst both visited victory lane in 2023), and they are going into 2024 with the same Xfinity Series lineup (Custer and Herbst) and a half new Cup Series lineup (Harvick is being replaced by rookie Josh Berry and Almirola is being replaced by second year driver Noah Gragson (Harvick and Almirola both retired after 2023), Briscoe and Preece are returning)
I see the blame for the lack of success at Haas as 50/50 between Günther and Gene Haas. Haas has no idea about F1 and doesn't want to invest more and Günther has no idea how to deal with his staff. I don't see much changing with the new management.
I know we've had several 'Haas is finished' videos on here; and I appreciate that you weren't immediately fire and brimstone with them - but with Resta and Steiner gone this close to the start of the Season - I can't see it as any more than Haas conceding defeat and preparing to sell. How is Ayao Komatsu going to handle both the logistical and engineering side of Haas at the same time?
He's not, they're creating a position for someone else to handle the non-competitive aspects of the team.
@@rars0n They should've let Steiner stay in the interim until then. Vowles worked because of how close he was paired to Toto Wolff and Mercedes, not to mention that Vowles has more experience than Komatsu. I don't want to see him fail, but given the position and lack of resources I don't see him doing much better. In the end, I think Guenther will have the final word on how/why Haas had sunk or swam.

Guenther is not my team principal of choice. But he made the Haas f1 team happen, that much will owe endless respect from me.
Setting up shop, securing funding, striking good deals with Ferrari and Dallara to get two cars on the grid is commendable even if it might not have been the best plan long term

I think the entire business model for haas needs to change. It's been we need cheaper cheaper cheaper. Valuing cheap inexperienced drivers who bring money over drivers who can actually survive a weekend showed alot. Imagine the quality of all the engineers and people at the factory probably cheap cheap cheap. No wonder there's no progress
I never really liked Mr. Steiner all that much to begin with, so good riddance to bad rubbish. But at the same time when you look back on it you gotta at least appreciate the work that he tried to do to bring the Hass F1 team to glory.

Audi has it's slot in Sauber for 2026. Andretti would make more sense.

I don't know how I feel about this move by haas to be honest I think it goes one of two ways really good and they start making some good steps or two it goes horribly wrong and haas end up leaving formula 1
from my stance they're a team who are bound to leave soon, I just can't see it any other way with the way they want to move on forwards from now on. luckily no one would miss them since the driver line up is made up by drivers which have no racing spirit whatsoever.

Gene Haas says Steiner's departure was "...about performance. I have no interest in being 10th anymore". Michael Andretti claims he's spoken to Gene a bunch of times, with the latter saying he didn't care if the team sat in last place because he still made money and it worked for him regardless. 🤔

Guenther does deserve a spot in f1 just not as a team principal. Maybe more on the marketing side of things
His dream driver pairing has honestly let him down. His main mistake was that it didn't seem like he emphasised the importance of not crashing. It honestly seems this was never communicated at all. It should've been ingrained in the team culture. This was his main leadership mistake.

Hard to say if it's the right call but something needed to be done. It's just unfortunate Gene can't see the team needs more than a management restructure and a lot also needs to be done upgrading the infrastructure. Its pretty disheartening to hear from Gene that he thinks the current model of renting from Ferrari is enough for them.
Guenther did well with Haas though. He was the one that spearheaded its creation, coming up with the business plan, getting Ferrari involved and getting Gene to invest in it. So he has to be commended for that but maybe now its time for some change.
Funny guy. Fun to watch and listen to. But he peaked 2-3 years ago and really wasn’t gonna take the team further. I dislike the amount of blame he is taking on bc Haas doesn’t seem invested in his team like he does with his NASCAR team.
Also Mick should have gotten better shot. Guenther didn’t know what to do with a young gun. He was use to experienced drivers.
I think he would thrive as the spokesman or marketing face of Haas. Bc he did keep them afloat through COVID and Rich Energy. He can bring in the money.

Other channels said tthat Gene would not spend money on updatting the factory and spending cash which they could have given their low ranking. Hence HAAS Techo Engineers left also.
I think promoting an engineer to team boss is a mistake though. Binotto was a case in point. Engineers know how to manage numbers and physics, not people. There may be exceptions of course, but in general… Numbers don’t have opinions or off days.
Obviously Günther didn't do everything as supposed, but Haas finishing last is definitely not his fault only. He is a factor yes, but you can't expect him perform miracles with a car that handles like dog shit. Haas should've invested some money in the infrastructures or perhaps even switch their engine supplier when the hybrid era. I know that it ain't an easy process to completely switch but it may have had brought some fresh wind to the team.

Weird seeing people say in this particular case, the product being delivered and past failings with sponsor deals somehow has nothing to do with the Team Principal. Seems to be more a love for the European TP and disdain for the American owner.
I like Guenther as a leader in theory, and obviously he is a very entertaining character, and it will be interesting to see if he ever helms a more rooted team in the future, but to shuck any blame on the Haas team strategy and failings on the guy who owns the team and protect the guy who is literally in charge of everything is bizarre and misguided.

Maybe his Netflix fame gave him more chances than he deserved based off of the team standings and where they finished every year. I do think though that Haas is an ever-changing team that doesn't really have a strong identity outside of DTS. The fact that they don't have a strong mechanics or development department with low funding meant that they tried to get by with what they had which left way more room for error unfortunately. Hopefully, in the coming years, things change for the team's standings. I Hope Steiner also places with another team who knows maybe he even somehow teams up with Binotto.

Günther Steiner is one thing but also Simone Resta leaving, Komatsu feels like a good choice imo but I have no idea who would be good enough to replace Resta, for me it feels like if Red Bull lost Adrian Newey (I know hard to compare but this is just a feeling)
I think Haas are done this season only the drivers can somehow pull something out i don't expect anything out of the rest of the team
Komatsu was largely in charge of development of that soapbox of a car for years... So to expect that this guy is going to make a difference suddenly seems unlikely. I would opt for new blood.

If the team's performance had anything to do with the sacking of Guenther Steiner then promoting the chief designer, responsible for this sh*tbox on wheels, to the job of team principal is totally absurd.
Me thinks, this is more about "financial differences" such as Guenther's claim to 50% of team ownership, Gene's desire to cash in/sell out (to Andretti?) now that the team is valued at almost $1bn. This certainly is not the end of that sordid story.
Wanted Günther to much or was Gene too greedy? Haas didn't meet the costcap so i think the latter. I don't think things do get better for Haas. Gene installed a puppet on a string.

Absolutely no point unless gene Haas is going to properly finance the team.
In my opinion this was long overdue. I think after 2019 or 2022 they should’ve let him go.
Results. After nearly 10 years, Haas are dead last. They have a solid title sponsor to answer to, and sponsors do not like throwing money at last place teams. The 'B-Spec' car from last year was a flop. Something had to change at the team, and usually that begins with the Boss. I really hope they can figure something out with their car, as that is all that truly counts in F1 racing.
The only reason haas is still even in F1 is because of Gunther

@@lumiereteindre Indeed, but if I the current CEO of Liberty Media, I will say that the attended of Austin, American Express, Netflix, Paramount+, etc. is enough. Why? Because I don't need more US races like Miami and/or Las Vegas. I just need to get the most out of Austin. Even I will bring back MTV but not as team sponsor, probably as official partner or something like that.

Well, I disagree in some points with you. I agree with you that Steiner was not the best leader for the team BUT he designed this weird Haas model of work that they use, he saved the team during COVID and he delivered the best driver line up that he could get for 2023. But with an owner that doesn't want to spend more money on the team (they are almost at surviving levels on F1) and a number two getting promoted to team principal (not an outsider, not an ex F1 team principal from other teams), I don't trust Haas at all.
I mean, you lose two vital parts of your directives before a new season starts... that's worrying
Gunther seemed like he was more taking the job as a fun day out more than a serious job. Sure that can be good if you get results. But my god the team has been abysmal, great on Saturday awful on Sunday.
Giving the job to grosjeans old engineer is.... Odd. But maybe he'll be more efficient and helpful in that aspect, but we'll have to see. The last time someone was both an engineer and involved in a different position in the team. Was sergei sirotkin in Williams and he was abysmal too.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Gene Haas just isn't a good team owner. His NASCAR team was nowhere until Tony Stewart took over half ownership and has been falling as Tony Stewart has taken more distant of a role in the team. I expected more of the same from Haas F1. I mean, I was initially excited to hear that Gene Haas was looking at starting an F1 team, but then I realized that it was Gene Haas we were talking about.

Haas won't be on the grid in 2026. Gene Haas won't put the investment needed into the team. Guenther was essentially the owner by proxy with Gene just supplying the money, and without that guidance they'll fall apart. I won't say I think Guenther was a great TP by any means, but he was Haas F1.

I feel like you just sit making content without ever doing research one what you're talking about?... He didn't join a fresh team in 2016, he was there from 2014 building up in preparation for them joining the grid in 2016.
I think he did great building Haas out of nothing and that has to be praised. That being said, I don't think he was a good TP. He seemed extremely abrasive and always on "survival mode". For years the excuse is that they didn't have the money. When they finally met the cost cap, they didn't know what to do with it. I will miss his personality, but I don't think he was the person for the job.
I know you are a Haas fan and everything, but it's so obvious Haas is falling apart, investments are not coming in, the cash is diminishing. Andretti having the partnership with GM/Cadillac, they will buy Haas. Haas will not be on the F1 grid, they will be fully out by 2025 or 2026!!!
