My four old son and I watched both parts of this video. He liked it a lot. After we were done he asked me if we could visit your house and watch you work. I told him you probably didn't live in West Virginia. "Your right dad. Jon probably lives in another world..." I'm subscribing to this channel right now!
For something which is fairly simple construction, you've made a very nice chest. Love your videos Jon. Just discovered this older video but as ever, you smashed it.
Hola! 🖐I just jumped over here from Part I and this is looking better and better. Looking forward to Part III and get to see the final product. Take care and have a good one, Adios!👊
John, such a fantastic piece of furniture. Precision and just a joy to watch all those mitre joints coming together so perfectly. Mine are getting better but I strive for perfection like that. Thanks for the videos and the explanations.
You're a skilled woodworker, teacher and videographer. A rare and very welcome combination. I'm going to build this chest. Good idea to biscuit the lid trim. Thanks.
Very handsome chest! .... I was talking about the box, Jon. LOL ;-) Seriously, it looks great. Appreciate how you demonstrated making the trim. That step, while not difficult, is often glossed over or not shown. For many, it is intimidating, or at least thought of as complicated. You did a great job of removing the "mystery" and making far more approachable.
Great no nonsense video. I really liked the leg detail. I am a carpenter and find your videos very practical and well designed. Just did the Top Bar Hive from the video. I did use the window detail, but hope the ability to watch them work is worth the cutting of the comb. Anyway, thanks again.
Hey John. Just wanted to let you know that Im currently building 2 of these chests. I changed the measurements a tad bit so that I could get all the box material out of one sheet of plywood with little more than saw dust left over :) This has been a lot of fun to build and quite easy. Thanks so much.
Mr. Jon Peters, awasome! thank you for sharing the video and also for the easy going way to make this chest!!! all the best from Brazil! Marcos A M Scavacini
Beautiful work Jon. As someone new to woodworking, I am excited to build this chest myself. Thank you for sharing your gift with us. Keep up the great work....
***** hey this is robert i don't know if you you will get this but i want to make one just like the one you mmde is there any way you can call me or give me a list of things i will need for start or email me or something you did a really good job and i want to do that !! my eamil is vancottrobert@gmail.com thanks
Thanks for sharing John. Your style reminds me of 'the Waltons' good old fashioned entertainment, meant in the nicest way. Kind regards from Poole England Will
I know this is a older video but came across it when my wife asked me to build one. Such a great video and you make it look so easy. What I wouldn't give to just hang around and help out in your shop for a few weeks. You have a new forever subscriber!
I am constantly amazed by the people that create on youtube, very nice job Jon, and as one other person said, I can only hope mine will turn out at nice as yours. I have been scroll sawing for the last 8 years, but this still amazes me, again, great job!
That is a brilliant peace of work Jon i will have to try to build one myself I love the way you give all the measurements for your fans not many carpenters do that as well and the best of Irish luck to you
That's a beautiful job, nicely done. It looks so great that i find myself wishing you had used mortise and tenons and dove tails with hide glue so that it could last at least 300 years :)
I personally would have used a piano hinge for such a heavy box That's because i make boxes all the time in my work shop you box is fantastic looking and i will make one Keep up the good work Jon Oh yes by the way i have subscribe to your channel thank you
That is a great piece Jon, nice proportions and the molding does a lot for it. Why paint? A nice coat of colored shellac would do so much more for it! Great workmanship, thanks for sharing!!
This box came out beautifully. I am going to attempt to make one witu your notes that ive printed from your website. I only hope mine comes out half as good as yours looks. Great job! You must have been doing this type of work for a very long time as you make it look so simple. Cheers!
Great job Jon. I'm half way through a copy of it for my Grandson. I'll send a pic when it's done. You seem to breeze through deciding on proportions. I've been in the trade all my life and still struggle with it, even when I do a drawing. Although I work in Metric (in the UK), I was brought up with Imperial (Standard to you). So I used Imperial measurements to be sure I got everything exactly as yours. It's looking good.
it's a great looking box.....I do wonder how well the poplar will hold up to daily abuses though; would it be better served to use a hardwood if you have it available, for more durability? (I realize you were using up leftovers,etc...)
Wat her this so many times. Love it. Almost done w my build of this. No matter how many times I watch this, every time I come back I have to re- like it. Why is that? Like the other likes are gone and the thumbs up is gray
This is a great chest. Can you take a second and explain why the plans call for a - side face frame - cut at 41/4 wide in back and 31/2 wide in the front?
You know I had to watch part 2 Homie!!! At work for another 4 hrs. What to do you ask?? Go back and watch Jon Peters' older videos of course!!! Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!!
Jon - I noticed you didn't use any band molding on the back of the lid. Is this because of of strength? perhaps the band molding will rip out due to the opening and closing of the lid? Dave.
Solid Drew he had to take the top off to paint the box. I do this with brass screws because they are soft. When the box is complete you use the brass screws and they are not messed up. It gives you a nicer finished product.
great vid as always Jon. One thing i can't figure out is how you look always hat clean and sharp when working, no matter what when i start doing manual labor i end up a mess
Jon: You showed the little pieces of trim but I do not remember seeing you cut those little tiny pieces. What kind of saw was used and how did you hold the wood?
Very nice box, I love your work Jon. I want to make this for my mother's 50th. I don't have a band saw or a router.. Do you think those legs would be tough with a jig saw?
well i come up with another question and may have found my missing ling here , could it be that the side frame with 4 1/4 go toward the back as theirs no face frame for the back and its to make up the difference in thickness? to me it would make sense but i'm just a beginner here that's why i was asking. PS: and if it turns out only have as good as yours it will be still great , thanks Jon love your work..Mel
Wow. Im a beginner . I want to make a chest , baby changer and baby bed for our new born. What wood do you recommend? I also want a dark stain that looks traditional? any advice?
Jon, Great looking chest, I am in process of making one like it now, but I am using Oak, What did you use on the lid to keep it from falling all the way back?
Jon, I really like this design, I made another one of these from Pine, I finished it out on back also and am going to make butterfly style wing lid so it can set out in middle of the room, thanks again for the design...
Hi Jon , just love this blanket chest , mine is going to be same measurement but inside finish with red western cedar for a cedar chest , but i have a question and i need some clarity to where i'm confused. on your drawing cut list the end frame one vertical board calls for 4- 1/4 X 10- 3/4 but the left side on the drawing is 3-1/4 X 10- 1/4' . My question is "are they both 3 - 1/4 or should they be both 4-1/4 ?. Im sure theres a reason but im missing it , thanks PS" But i love this chest. Mel
Hi John, 2 quick questions... 1. The last strip of poplar you installed on the top at the rear where the hinges are attached...will MDF be strong enough for the hinges? Or should it be poplar? 2. Is it ok to router the perimeter of the plywood top instead of adding routered poplar strips? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Love your vids.
Question: I am fairly new to wood working. I love this box. My wife would love it as a toy box. How can I make the top, child safe so it won't slam or close hard on my grand childrens fingers? Or is this not wood working related? Ideas, anyone, Please?
Amazing craftsmanship. I would be honored to apprentice under your expertise; when will you relocate to Texas, asking for a friend😅.
My four old son and I watched both parts of this video. He liked it a lot. After we were done he asked me if we could visit your house and watch you work. I told him you probably didn't live in West Virginia.

Awesome project from start to finish Jon. It's a pleasure to watch you work.

Great no nonsense video. I really liked the leg detail. I am a carpenter and find your videos very practical and well designed. Just did the Top Bar Hive from the video.
I did use the window detail, but hope the ability to watch them work is worth the cutting of the comb. Anyway, thanks again.
I think it is, I was just looking through the window the other day. thanks for the comment and have fun with the hive
Very Nice. Love the edge banding on the top.
Your work and your videos are excellent. Thank you.
Just love the legs, John they really set the box out from others

Great video...!!! Jon, in 6:28 you mention the bit that you are using, could you write it here and what size is it?
Thank you
Thanks Edgar, sure it's a ( self centering vix bit )
it's a Vix bit

Thanks for the video. Box is looking great. How did you hold the lid in place when you were drilling for the hinge? Thanks
You know I had to watch part 2 Homie!!! At work for another 4 hrs. What to do you ask?? Go back and watch Jon Peters' older videos of course!!! Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!!
Interessante Jon, que meu nome é Peter... Parabéns pelo lindo trabalho, curto muito !
Jon - I noticed you didn't use any band molding on the back of the lid. Is this because of of strength? perhaps the band molding will rip out due to the opening and closing of the lid? Dave.
very nice
Excelente. gracias!!
I like, good job
Wonderful
Patrick Pardon Thanks Patrick
The silver screws in the brass hinge killed me! Especially as the other one got brass screws lol
Solid Drew he had to take the top off to paint the box. I do this with brass screws because they are soft. When the box is complete you use the brass screws and they are not messed up. It gives you a nicer finished product.
¡¡Wonderful work!!
Is it possible to install soft close hinges or would the lid be too heavy?
How would you approach this if paint was not an option? I love it but I would like to try it out of walnut and maple
great vid as always Jon. One thing i can't figure out is how you look always hat clean and sharp when working, no matter what when i start doing manual labor i end up a mess
What’s the drill bit that tapers the hole for the screws?
Drill bit with countersink
ótimo trabalho
Jon: You showed the little pieces of trim but I do not remember seeing you cut those little tiny pieces. What kind of saw was used and how did you hold the wood?
+peggyt1243 i know its a year late but, he used a mitre saw. You could use the eraser on the end of a pencil to keep it steady if needed.
Very nice box, I love your work Jon. I want to make this for my mother's 50th. I don't have a band saw or a router.. Do you think those legs would be tough with a jig saw?
I think so and if you get a rough cut you can clean it up the belt sander , thanks a have a good build.
Great job John. You make best woodworking videos. I was wondering how come you dont have a dust collection hooked up?
Thanks, it's on the list
Спасибо за вторую серию :)

I like the chest but,I cant find the plans

Thanks, I wouldn’t trust mdf to hold a screw
Hi, do you in any of your work use the golden ratio?
Just a quick question I hope I noticed in the plan that one side of the ends has a thick piece of wood (4 1/2 instead of 3 1/2) Why is that?
Question: I am fairly new to wood working. I love this box. My wife would love it as a toy box. How can I make the top, child safe so it won't slam or close hard on my grand childrens fingers? Or is this not wood working related? Ideas, anyone, Please?
brass screws for brass hindges?
good job ;)
Jon, great box! I have kids I would love to build a box for, do you have prints/drawings available for this?
Thanks
is this drywall screws ?
I have a question, so do you sell these, or do you keep them as your own furniture?
I couldn't find the material list sir please help
Tim, check out JonPeters.com and type Blanket Chest Drawing into the search bar....or go to page 2 of Design Plans and you'll see it there
I'm pretty stingy with my subscriptions, but I've subscribed to your channel after just one video. Don't let me down :) Haha, great project man!
Thanks man
