That veneer inlay between the burl top and the ebony sides came out great. I was a bit nervous when you brought out the saw. But it worked perfectly from what I can see. Very nice.
Cripes that hinge idea is clever... And such beautiful hand tools also... quite a nervewracking moment with the planing of the top and bottom surfaces of the close on the box... Just beautiful! Thanks. Tom (from France).
thanks, glad you liked it 😀 this one will stay like it is as that’s what was requested but I happily put in trays/inserts/dividers etc if needed as shown in previous videos 👍
That is a thing of beauty, and I am in awe of your skills. I made my first scrap-wood pine box today, it's not too bad. This inspires me to keep improving. Thanks.
thanks glad you liked it 👍 Its a beeswax, turpentine & a finish oil mix (I used Liberon’s beeswax & Finish oil) The mix isn’t quite straight forward as depends on the beeswax, the one I used from Liberon had turpentine in it as well so I needed more than if it was just plain beeswax. But I started with equal parts then added more beeswax till I got the consistency I wanted. Hope that helps 😀
My only suggestion would be to tape a part of the bottom edge of your block plane to protect the veneer when trimming the blond inlay on the top. Beautiful work!!
Well, you made veneering look easy. I’m very glad that vacuum system worked as it just shows you don’t need expensive equipment. I had not seen that veneer saw/inlay trick before but it adds significantly to the aesthetic. I think everyone should know that you are “self-taught” YT may be a good teacher but you have to bring natural attributes of patience and precision to make it all work. Very watchable video with an excellent result.
@@GM_Design I’m sure you will get heavily figured burl veneers which will require “flattening” before adhesive. I’m sure there are many ways to do this but my old way is to use a glycerin/water mixture all over the veneer and then vacuum press/clamp between 2 flat boards until dry. Then carry on as normal. I also use the Titebond cold press veneer adhesive - I have no idea what additions make it great for that - but for complex glue ups including shapes onto a form, I tend to use Cascamite as it has such a long open time. As ever, you find a way that suits your own way of working.
I made a video on how I make that hinge. Almost all the boxes I sell though my website and Etsy store have that hinge...I even invented a wooden latch for the front to match it. I do things a little different based on my own tools and experiences but, largely the same...even the same quick-clamps...lol. Great video.
thanks, I’m glad you liked it 😀 I’d happily use MDF or Plywood, it just so happens I had some MDF already and the price of Plywood at the mo is ridiculous anyway! I prefer them as there is no wood movement etc so they make a better substrate, in my opinion 👍
Your videos ar very good but I think a little narration or discussion would be good. Not being critical, just a thought. Either way way your work is really nice.
I thought it was fine. But, I am a woodworker and understood every step Gary took. Maybe a mention here or there on sanding with the green pad or knocking down the sheen with paper might have helped, but it was pretty self explanatory, I felt.

Lovely to watch, fantastic result. And as for that magnificent glueing of the handle - breathtaking!! Thank you for another great video.

Great vid. Excellent box. If thats your first time veneering, you nailed it, especially when finished by the inlay.

That is one sexy box. Great job as always and the inlay around the veneer just makes it pop. Looking forward to the next video.
