yeah, i just replayed ARR and HW, and i don't get the bully vibe. i definitely get an "annoyed by her general impulsiveness and tendency to not think things through" vibe, that sometimes creeps over into snarkiness, but it never came off as bullying to me
A reminder that most of this ARR VAs were the same(as far as I've seen) as the ones in 1.0. So they were asked back to a somewhat failing game at the time with probably the knowledge that they would not be hired back since they were moving to a UK(?) Studio over a US one. I did like most of the old Scions VAs along with Raubahn, Merlwyb and Gaius and who knows if they could of gotten back into the grove into HW. That being said I love the current VAs and it's cool to see how Alphinaud's VA has improved over the years.
With really only one exception I MUCH prefer the new voice actors to the old. This may not be the voice actors' fault, mind you, but just the level of direction they were given for their roles. Still, the newer voices just sound a lot more "fantasy" and I appreciate it.
alphinaud's voice actor change was rough... he went from the guy from mephisto from blue exorcist trying to play a teenager, to well his new va, and it was hard to adjust to until I got further along.
I liked the old dub, but I have grown to like the new dub better. I especially like Alphinaud's new voice because he actually sounds more like a teenager.
I like how Alphinaud sounds like he has it together and then he just drops it comes Heavensward-onwards, because his refined voice was just some affectation he did to distance himself.
I really appreciate the new English voice acting, just the same, do I dislike the quality of the audio dropping from some of the voices like post-hw Minfillia, sounding like she's almost swallowing the microphone.
I just finished AAR story and I am so sad of Alphinaud and Thancred having their voices changed :( It's a bit shocking. The old ones sound so much better to me. The rest sound ok from this video but still I immediately heard the difference to look it up only to find many voices had changed. I read why but still dissapointed.
@@leonie7754 well I guess the VA referenced the fact that Urianger is a little bit old fashion - in his manner of speaking and I have no idea if Elezens live hundreds of year that would probably consider his age - old.
People need to give the old voices more credit, I think people just default to "Oh, they changed the voices so obviously they were bad!" but look at these names, Sam Riegel, Gideon Emery... these are top VAs!
You know you might have been a bit TOO obsessed eith Eizen from Tales of Berseria when you heard Thancred's frustrated sigh/groan for all of 3 seconds and immediately make the connection that it's the same VA. Welp. 🙃
I honestly like all the new voice changes especially Thancred and Alphinauds, however I really cant even tell the difference between old urianger and new one
I never realised they changed it except CID Especially Thancred since he felt more like a change in the way he spoke Alphinaud's one was probably the most obvious that I should have noticed
Just got to Heavensward and the VA change is jarring to say the least, some are better but quite a few are worse. Merlwyb and Urianger in particular sound much worse than before, but I guess that's just how it goes with long running games.
They get much better the deeper into the game you get, just like how the ARR voices got much better with each patch all the way to 2.5. It also doesnt help that the actual _quality_ of the recordings in Heavensward is pretty bad too. Merylwyb in particular has some very good voice acting in Shadowbringers.
@@Chocolate83Bunny they sound *vaguely* british because most of the voice actors ARE british and the recording studio is based in the UK. how can they be generic if they're authentic? or would you rather them sound vaguely american?
I'm not entirely sure if I like new Alphinaud or old Alphinaud better. After playing through HW and STB I had forgotten what Sam Riegel's voice sounded like for Alphinaud, but after hearing it again I'm on the fence :/
I used to love his ARR voice and was bummed when it got changed. But I've now gotten used to his new VA (after hearing it for so many years) so I prefer it. :x
So i dont follow voice actors, i just play games and watch animes and dont give it much thought. But now i'm a turned Critter and am in love with the Critical Role community and the nerdy bunch of voice actors playing. I have been playing FFXIV since original 2010 launch and now 11 years later i'm just discovering that ARR voices of Thancred was voiced by Tallison Jaffe, and Alphinaud by Sam Riegal? I'm such an ostrich. trying to find any video footage of it is hard though, i like seeing the actors do the voices. I can't remember Alphinauds original voice sound
I love all the new voices better (the ones in the video, i cant remember who else changed). Maybe it's the writing and the voices. I find it rly distracting if I feel like theyre acting out a Shakespeare play. The new voices have a lot more emotion and feels natural.
They did pretty well with casting the scions new voice actors honestly. They all sound relatively similar though better, giving more character to their well, character. Alphi def sounds less bratty and snobby although I think that was on purpose to show his naivety since there are lines that talk about that. Overall I like to think he calmed down after the crystal braves incident. I will say side characters often have VA changes that suck but oh well. Not too sure why its hard to stick with a Cid VA though. That dude has had like 5 changes its slightly odd
I think Gideon Emery (Uriangers old va) wouldve sounded better as Thancred. I always heard Gideon when Thancred spoke before hearing what he actually sounded like
For anyone that plays Guild Wars 2; Papalymo is/was voiced by the Asura Male PC (Steve Staley), and Alphinaud is/was voiced by Brahm (Sam Riegal--also Teddie from Persona 4.)
Alphinaud as a character was super unlikeable. He was a rich, stuck up snob who thought way too highly of himself despite the fact that he couldn’t actually deliver and it was the WoL’s efforts that created the change he was looking for. Then when he created the Crystal Braves, his Ego was on max! Lol I honestly think if Colins voiced Alphinaud in ARR he wouldn’t have the same level of “arrogant rich prick” that Sam Riegel brought to the table. I think Colins’ depiction of his voice after ARR really reinforces that sense of “Just got my Ego shoved up my ass,” that Sam’s depiction wouldn’t bring to the table. I think the timing of voice changes for Alphinaud was perfect storyline wise in that respect.
Most of them can be explained through aging but ydas was the most extreme change. And Y’stola changed, least as I understand it, the voice actor was murdered irl.
Honestly I think Urianger is the only character that I like both voices for. Well, Y'shtola too, but her two voices are so nearly identical that I'm not counting it.
The only 2 voice changes which were slightly irritating were Thancred (Since the new VA made it sound like he was dead inside) and Cid (He went from being a pilot to a pirate, basically)
Urianger sounds like the person who is like “I went through second puberty, it is a thing all Elezen do” and then pull up a video of him with a worse mic that does not amplify bass that much like he was Thor from Pirate Software.
I heard the NEW English voices first before hearing a new one running MSQ on an alt (because I wanna rerun MSQ to catch little things that I missed). Everytime the twins talk I have to yell SHUT UP ALPHINAUD. XD
Honestly the only 2 voices i miss are Urianger's(I love Gideon Emery, ever since he voiced Balthier in FFXII) although his new voice still suits the character. Now Merlwyb is still a bit harder to get used to, her original voice fit the character so well(also, A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON).
Heavenward beyond is my preferred cast, except for Myrlweb. Although honestly, when the change happened I honestly didn't notice the change. All I noticed was the characters sounded more professional, more world weary and less anime-ish.
I honestly think the changes happened at the correct point. FFXIV ARR was just a string of successes and could have been an anime about the ascension of a Warrior of Light after a previous set of Warrior of Lights failed to stop Dalamud, provided they stop before 2.5. FFXIV Heavsenward-Endwalker is the story about a group of people who suffer to solve long-standing problems and challenge the nihilism of the Ascians.
I honestly like to think Alphinaud just hit puberty LOL

Alphinaud's change actually matched quite nicely with the change in his personality. both voices fitted the kind of person he was and has become
alphinaud's voice actor change was rough... he went from the guy from mephisto from blue exorcist trying to play a teenager, to well his new va, and it was hard to adjust to until I got further along.
im shocked at how close HW Ysh sounds to her 2.0 version.
Damn, Thancred's whole demeanor changes :(
Okay Alphinaud’s voice actually sounds like he’s grown up and out of his snider voice. It’s kinda nice actually.
Sloppey
SLOPPEY!
SLOPPPEH!
S L O P P E H Y ! ! !
Urianger old voice is my fav voice actor I was so sad when they changed him
I liked the old dub, but I have grown to like the new dub better. I especially like Alphinaud's new voice because he actually sounds more like a teenager.
I like how Alphinaud sounds like he has it together and then he just drops it comes Heavensward-onwards, because his refined voice was just some affectation he did to distance himself.
I think Alisae had a pretty good voice switch too
I really appreciate the new English voice acting, just the same, do I dislike the quality of the audio dropping from some of the voices like post-hw Minfillia, sounding like she's almost swallowing the microphone.
Tataru's ARR VA didn't have a high peek, because she started talking at the end of ARR
Most of the new voices are nicer, but I miss Thancred's old voice actor, i miss that sass!
You can say that again, I mean... even though he takes a more tactical approach to things, he's still snarky at times
For the most part i honestly liked the old voices more
I am devastated that they changed Thancred's VA
Probably because despite retaining his wit, Thancred was the replacement Minfillia from that point
The contract with the company supplying the voice actors ran out, and SqE had to go elsewhere
Best thing to ever happen
@@Umbruhh Except with Urianger, I loved Balthier's VA
Oh, I was wondering why all the VAs changed to begin with. I never knew there were companies that supplied VAs
Pity they didn't renew the contract.
Still a kick to me that original Thancred was Talesin Jaffe
I normally hate when voice actors get changed but I think most changes were for the better.
alphinaud's shocked me when i first played through this game and now- uh in ARR that isnt alphie XD (he must of hit major puberty)
I'll never play again if they change off of the current Urianger. He's my favorite scion right now
0:17 I KNOW THIS VOICE IS NOW LIVINGWAY 😳 That voice just told me to hop to it!
Bethan Cullinane is Livingway and Mappingway's voice. Haley Alexander voiced Nanamo in 2.0. From what a search says.
What, they dumped Taliesin Jaffy(?) as Thancred? :O That guy was the highlight of my MSQ.
I like Urianger's vojce so much
maaaaan i liked Yda's ARR voice shes such a great actress shes kikimora in owl house, rachel alucard in blazblue, she has such a fitting voice.
I mean they are getting older and they changed really well. I love the new voices.
Urianger’s frist VA sounds like a BBC narrator for an interesting historical film 💖
It does! But that doesn't fit his face now that we see it. I think it sounds too old for him, but it is one of the better original voices.
@@leonie7754 well I guess the VA referenced the fact that Urianger is a little bit old fashion - in his manner of speaking and I have no idea if Elezens live hundreds of year that would probably consider his age - old.
It's funny, cause his new VA could probably be legit heard as a BBC announcer. Hell, he played a villain in a BBC radio drama.
Great, i'm not going to be able to unhear that when playing through the story with my alts lol
People need to give the old voices more credit, I think people just default to "Oh, they changed the voices so obviously they were bad!" but look at these names, Sam Riegel, Gideon Emery... these are top VAs!
JESUS CHRIST ALPHINAUD!!
Old Papalymo sounds like a Warcraft gnome
Urianger's original actor also voiced Balthier in XII. Now that I know that I can't not hear it lol.
yda is definitely the best change
nothing quite like going through three expansions with the new voices and then going back to an alt in ARR and hearing the old voices out of nowhere
man, i forgot that yda was voiced by Rachel Alucard and Alphinaud was *Ky Kiske* (in xrd i guess)
Yshtola is so similar but much more emotive
Kinda miss Thancred old voice XD
Y'shtola's second voice actress is so good
I still prefer the old Alphinaud, Thancred and Eda. Gideon Emery was the best Urianger VA, but the character himself has greatly improved since ARR.
Y'shtola and Yda improved greatly
I never realised they changed it
except CID
Especially Thancred since he felt more like a change in the way he spoke
Alphinaud's one was probably the most obvious that I should have noticed
Just got to Heavensward and the VA change is jarring to say the least, some are better but quite a few are worse. Merlwyb and Urianger in particular sound much worse than before, but I guess that's just how it goes with long running games.
They get much better the deeper into the game you get, just like how the ARR voices got much better with each patch all the way to 2.5. It also doesnt help that the actual _quality_ of the recordings in Heavensward is pretty bad too. Merylwyb in particular has some very good voice acting in Shadowbringers.
Yeah I'm just getting to stormblood and i actually prefer all the original voices over the new ones. they just sound so generic and vaguely british
@@Chocolate83Bunny they sound *vaguely* british because most of the voice actors ARE british and the recording studio is based in the UK. how can they be generic if they're authentic? or would you rather them sound vaguely american?
“Urianger” “worse”
NAY
@Lee Griffiths Plot twist: The WoL has an American accent :O
Seeing as the game has been in development for like 14 years, it doesn't surprise me that they can't keep the same voice actors.
Believe it or not I like Urianger better with his original voice.
The new voices have a lot more emotion and feels natural.
god dammit thank god they changed
They did pretty well with casting the scions new voice actors honestly. They all sound relatively similar though better, giving more character to their well, character. Alphi def sounds less bratty and snobby although I think that was on purpose to show his naivety since there are lines that talk about that. Overall I like to think he calmed down after the crystal braves incident. I will say side characters often have VA changes that suck but oh well. Not too sure why its hard to stick with a Cid VA though. That dude has had like 5 changes its slightly odd
I think Gideon Emery (Uriangers old va) wouldve sounded better as Thancred. I always heard Gideon when Thancred spoke before hearing what he actually sounded like
I don't even need to double check, first Thancred voice acter is Talesin Jaffe and I love how quickly I noticed that ^^
Papalymo received the biggest improvement from the voice swap.
I miss old cid and that other character from 2.0 that has a prominent voice and comes back in Stormblood, I’m being vague for spoiler reasons.
Urianger had a voice change?!
Ya he used to have the same voice as balthier in ff12
@@heartfullbutterfly314 And Biggs from FF VII Remake.
The same voice actor has always voiced Urianger, but at times it sounds different. That's how I found Urianger's Milkshake.
Im so torn because I love the new voices but also I didnt realise ARR Thancred was Talisen Jaffe and Alphinaud was Sam Regal.
For anyone that plays Guild Wars 2; Papalymo is/was voiced by the Asura Male PC (Steve Staley), and Alphinaud is/was voiced by Brahm (Sam Riegal--also Teddie from Persona 4.)
I knew Papalymo's voice was way too familiar.
THERE HE IS! THANCRED DE ROLO!!
Im glad they changed Alphinaud’s voice he actually sounds like a young boy and not some stuck up creepy gay boy who gives off creepy vibes.
I love Sam Riegel but he made Alphinaud so unlikeable.
Lol
I honestly think if Colins voiced Alphinaud in ARR he wouldn’t have the same level of “arrogant rich prick” that Sam Riegel brought to the table.
Nope, that was yugiri
Honestly I think Urianger is the only character that I like both voices for.
Well, Y'shtola too, but her two voices are so nearly identical that I'm not counting it.
It was weird hearing the voice change immediately after returning to the game following the credits
The only 2 voice changes which were slightly irritating were Thancred (Since the new VA made it sound like he was dead inside) and Cid (He went from being a pilot to a pirate, basically)
Urianger just sounds like he got a better microphone LOL
Urianger sounds like the person who is like “I went through second puberty, it is a thing all Elezen do” and then pull up a video of him with a worse mic that does not amplify bass that much like he was Thor from Pirate Software.
I heard the NEW English voices first before hearing a new one running MSQ on an alt (because I wanna rerun MSQ to catch little things that I missed). Everytime the twins talk I have to yell SHUT UP ALPHINAUD. XD
i watched hundreds of hours of critical role and only in the credits i realized its talisien and sam.. holy shit
Honestly the only 2 voices i miss are Urianger's(I love Gideon Emery, ever since he voiced Balthier in FFXII) although his new voice still suits the character. Now Merlwyb is still a bit harder to get used to, her original voice fit the character so well(also, A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON).
hnestly all of these are a win to me except maybe urianger his original voice sounds nice and kinda like baltheir from 12 new ones good to tho
OG Alphinaud: *smug posh boy*
Current Alph: *OI M8 DID U SEE THE FOOTY GAME LAST NIGHT, EORZIA IS BLOODY AWFUL INNIT?*
Yda in Stormblood with her ARR voice would have been _interesting_ to experience
