And yes, we plan to do at least one more show on EDM, especially now that the Where in the Woods lineup came out. If you're interested in being on, reach out: comments [at] thewhatpodcast dot com
I’ve been going to EDM shows for a couple years now and it’s really hard to just send a playlist to someone. Best thing is to show up to a show and enjoy. My favorite DJs now I never heard of them before seeing a set. Svdden death is gunna be a crazy set! I saw him at redrocks and it just knocked everyone’s socks off.
Just got done listening to the podcast. Great podcast! I appreciate you guys trying to understand something to represent the exposure that it will have at Bonnaroo and maybe try to understand it so that you can enjoy yourself. I am a Music enjoyer. I appreciate all types of music. I would be equally excited to see Metallica, Andrew Bird, or elephant heart. Something that I think is missed about the EDM scene is how joyful and expressive it is. this year will be my fourth Bonnaroo. Last year I walked straight by Korn to go see something else at the techno stage, I can’t remember, really what, or who it was, but I remember being drawn there like a moth to the flame. I don’t know what it is about EDM but it puts you straight into the moment and all you can do is vibe or dance. No thinking, no expectations just all the feels. My sober self would kick my festival self for leaving my morning jacket halfway through because frankly they were a little dull, and I know how much fun being enveloped inside the EDM energy is, and I just can’t help migrating over to the energy of electronic music. Indulgent for sure, but no regrets here. From what I remember, I had an amazing time!
I think it’s also important to note on sampling is that it’s been around forever in every genre, it’s not an EDM thing. Rap, pop, dance. There is also different types of sampling, Fred is a great one to look at for that. There is such depths to sampling that it’s kinda hard to dog on it. On the points around 25:00 about genre, I think there is something to be said about a lot of people who seek out that “fake” sound. I’m personally a synth guy and kinda love the drum machine sound and and modifiers and plugins. Yea I should probably just buy a drum set and play again and nothing will beat the true live sound. But that fake sound is something I seek out 45:00 ShyFX mentioned!!!!! Now joined with chase and Status
@thewhatpodcast I'm a 13 year veteran so I have seen the EDM scene grow soon much over the years. I would love to come on to this podcast to discuss watching the EDM evolve over the years.
Id love to join in the EDM conversation if you've got space for one more:) I am a big dance music fan and enjoy something from each subgenre so I would love to bring that perspective along with my thoughts on the community since a majority of the festivals I have attended are 'EDM' focused, what I love about Bonnaroo is similar to what I love about the EDM community! Love the podcast by the way hope to run into yall on the farm!
Regarding the drugs involved in the scene: I definitely think there’s some glorification of specifically harder substances within EDM when compared to other genres. However, there’s also been a lot of education pushed by the community especially recently bc of the fentanyl epidemic. Do they enhance the experience? Sure, but it’s never a necessity. The visuals, the beats, the BASS, overall production, and even community is enough when you find the genre that speaks best to you. Plus EDM really preaches PLURR (peace, love, unity, respect, responsibility) and isn’t that what the Bonnaroovian code is all about? 🫶🫶
