I Went to Kenyan Drone School After Getting in Trouble...

- Before flying a drone, there is a lot you need to know. License, registration, flight plan, restricted zone and so much more. I have to say, when I first started to fly drones, I did not do enough research in regard to laws and regulation and GOT IN TROUBLE with the Kenyan Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA)...
After doing the proper research I decided to take the proper steps to fly legally in Kenya. I received two weeks of high quality training at Astra-Aerial in Nairobi where they provide the perfect balance of theory and practical lessons to eventually get your Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) license.
Even if the training is quite expensive, this skill is extremely valuable as a very low number of people are actually qualified. Drones and aerial photography and videography are not going away anytime soon so be upon the first to get your wings.

Thank you so so much Boru :)
100% with you on that, l live in Germany and have been them since they came to Kenya. Let's to get to 100k subscribers guz.
I admire how positive you are about this experience. It's easy to get annoyed by all the red tape to fly drones in Kenya.
a drone license that requires a health test.!! really!!! you can do more harm with a bicycle!!! Africa is a joke!!!!!
Not gonna lie, it is a bit annoying but it takes what it takes. 👍🏼
What tape??? Just fly it and don't get caught. If you get caught give them some cash and you're back flying the drone 10 minutes later.
Red tape is what keeps us safe. Drones are dangerous when operated poorly.
KENYAN HAS SHIT RULES ON SOME VERY BASIC THINGS
Thanks for the detailed info about drone school and license. Sadly, this is prohibitively expensive for many Kenyans. I can imagine someone picking up a used drone for $300 to earn a supplemental living for the family and then being told they need to go to drone school for $1300. Plus if you read through the drone rules passed in 2020, there are additional requirements for each commercial flight, transferring the drone, importing a new drone, etc. Someone in the Kenya government is trying to minimize drones.
I do agree that the government made the requirement very hard to achieve for most people sadly...
compare with uk 10pounds 3 years or US 5$ 3 years, this guys are only out for the money, not sure I think japan is the same
If u cant afford the training you cant also afford the drone. Its like complaining about a driving school without a car.....
@@AmazingMania Drones are going as low as 2K, Kenya is a sh!t hole country indeed. a drone that cost Kshs 2k only, which can only fly for 12 minute before recharge, can't fly above 40 meters because of limited battery power like 300mAh, and can crush and damage any time, you need license, for what? School for a drone? that foolish, just look out and do comparison with other countries. There are Drones that require license but not all. Some are just flying Toys for Adult Kids for luxury enjoying with your kids and familly
You can use a Transport Canada license in East Africa, but you may need to do a conversion. One reason why there are quite many Canadian pilots and aircraft engineers at Wilson and in East Africa as compared to Americans is because the licensing regulations are quite similar, and dont need new training. Think you can use your license in Canada, that if the law has not changed, but will need to sit the law exam.
Sadly from what I saw it does not apply to drones...
You cannot use a foreign licence in Kenya at all (unless you're flying foreign registered aircraft), not even a transport Canada one. The conversion means that you need a local student pilot licence and to sit air law, a composite conversion paper and the TTR for whatever aircraft you'll be flying. You'll also need to perform a number of flights (10 hrs I believe) to satisfy the local regulations. While you're doing that, kcaa's job is to validate your licence with your state. When you take the paperwork to them show that you've done the exams and flown the hours they'll grant you a conversion based on your foreign licence. That applies whether you've got a transport Canada licence or FAA licence or one from any other state. However this doesn't apply for Remote pilots licences which is what you need to fly unmanned aircraft (drones)
No you can't convert RPAS licences, makes EASA tickets the most widely accepted in the world because of the number of EASA countries there are!
@@sUASNews Actually, ICAO regulations apply internationally, not EASA. Though EASA work because of the internal market and financial ease it brings.
I am not surprised at all. Not at all. You are getting a very kind view of how Kenya works behind the scenes.
And kudos to Dave for handling this with the usual cool 😎
Thanks a lot :)
As a Kenyan I have to say this are the kind of laws that stifle entrepreneurship in Kenya, we have so many crazy arbitrary laws that a person starting up makes it almost impossible to do business unless you operate in a gray zone. A few weeks back they tried passing a law that only degree holders can do IT work, Imagine needing an IT degree to put a wordpress site or some networking !!!
You won't believe the number of licences you need to set up a business !
As for a drone (hobbyist) all you need should be free short video from the govt showing do's and don't s restricted areas etc. May be some affordable training if you will be using bigger drones but pricing should be fair
There should be more barriers and licenses to operate a drone
You made me try to wipe the fly in the screen 😏😏
True. Overregulation sniffles economic growth
But when it comes to drones tougher laws have to be placed..
The government needs to make money. And all industries need to be regulated. There is no shortcut. You are however right about the recent bill that Uhuru chose not to sign.
Dave, you really are funny. Sorry for being made to be a student of something you are good at. Love your positive attitude.
You gotta do what you gotta do haha :p
This is just awesome and thank you for this great information.
Thanks for watching :)
Congrarulations pilot Dave! Can't wait for your new videos showcasing your latest skills. Great to see you learnt something in Kenya!
For sure
Dave, you are a kind soul! I bet there is a back story with KCAA that you haven’t divulged. I’ll take Astral on the offer. Thanks Mani!
It's not worth getting in trouble haha.
Congratulations Dave ! Amazing what was required...
Thanks Pam.
Your instructor has 20 years of RPAS flying under his belt, very impressive
Yeah! He was building drones before it was cool! Haha
Congrats Dave, and also, the fam is growing fast! Kudos!!!👍🏼😊
Thank you Michelle :)
Ridiculous!! Those prices are outrageous... I'm a Kenyan living in the US and it only costs $5 to register your drone and $107 to get your license to fly commercially plus you can study online for the test...Just outrageous!
Hey mark did you see David complain about the price. But you a Kenyan complaining about the price and comparing it to that of the US. Do you think Kenya 🇰🇪 is American? We as African need to stop all these BS about our country. Kenya has it own policy and Bureaucracy that work for her. By the way I’m from Liberia 🇱🇷 west Africa.
With time the cost will decrease as more drone schools crop up. Remember how much Computer package s used to cost back then and now? Be patient.
The reason is that it is part of the act. I remember seeing the schedule under the subsidiary regulations a schedule fees tabulated for everything in relation to unmanned aircraft systems. Licenses for different types commercial being the most expensive one, learning fees, licenses for the pilots e.t.c.
@@fullerpajibo4148 he does raise a legitimate concern in as much voicing his opinion. There is no need of replying bitterly to an opinion and furthermore, you should have answered in a more mature manner since you do not enjoy the rights of being a kenyan
@@lionheart4378 I really don’t need to a Kenya 🇰🇪 the fact that I am an African justified me to voice my opinion. Remember we didn’t have those Imaginary borders until the white man showed up. My ancestors migrated from all over Africa, so maybe I am a Kenya and I can enjoy the right as an African.
Congratulations on getting your wings!! 🎉🎉
Thank you :)
Wow I didnt even know you coukd get drones that size they are huge.
I’m sure youa re aware of a programme called Wild Earth in Africa. i started watching it about a month ago it’s great. Getting me in the mood for my safari soon. I was thinking about Tracey as there were lots of elephants and I know how much she loves them.
Thats amazing! 🐘
Great video. Thank you for sharing your experience. I want to know if I can bring my drone with me when I will travel to Kenya ?
Sadly not. They will take it at the airport.
Well done Dave. This is true commitment to your profession. I hope the licence covers you for the long haul.
Thank you so so much!
Big up Dave for posting on time despite being in a different time zone
The aviator shades were a worthwhile investment for the intro 😂😂
The pricing on drones is on the steep side but at least now you won't have any issues with the law and we'll get to enjoy awesome scenic ariel views
Haha I will NEVER miss an upload :p
Dve,how outstanding recording,take care- 🖖
I appreciate that :)
great job great content
Thank you Louis :)
Amazing video! I particularly enjoyed minute 4:58 - 5:00, that one guy on the far left is the best side character of all time
Thanks a lot :)
Thank you for this information
You are more than welcome :)
Hey @@DaveMani, from your point of view what are the opportunities offered by having the remote pilot license in terms of a side hustle ?
thank you for sharing this VIDEO
😬👍🏼
I'm just viewing your videos for the first time and apparently the place where you came to practically train drone piloting is where i stay in limuru
Ah awesome :)
Congrats on getting certified Dave! It would be good to know whether the course has made you radically change how you take drone shots or if the certification is more for compliance reasons.
I've been flying drones for a few years now so I'm gonna be honest, the course didn't change anything for me. Plus it is not a aerial filming school either haha. But the course is needed for the license.
@@DaveMani got it! Thanks for sharing that insight.
How much is it?
Was about to ask how much, but I watched till the end.
Haha good job :p
Little known fact, after paying 150,000k to learn how to fly drones, astral-aerial secretly gives you the ability to shrink and climb into the drone yourself (don't tell anyone). That's why he needed the medical exam, to test if he could withstand all those Gs. This is why it's an amazing deal. Dave no longer needs a remote; He IS the remote. A true pilot unlike any other. So guys, stop stressing about the price and the medical exam. Take it from me, an ant-sized drone pilot myself, this is the best drone school deal in the world. Totally not a scam.
Hahaha how do you know that? 🤣
@@DaveMani Lol I just do. *wink* *wink*
Did you just expose our secret?
What a total racket! I speak as a former RAF pilot who built/flew C-IAVW in PEI. Just tell them, "Niy masa, weh! Mimi watu makuba SANA! Na jewa Mwalimu. Nenda sasa!" "What the hell! I am a very big person! I new Mwalimu (Nyerere, now a Saint). Leave now!" Cheeky buggers.
Yeah... it's quite a process here! -__-

Amazing video as always!!. Just a quick one and excuse my question if its been asked before. Are you from Quebec? Been meaning to ask 😊
Yes, I was spent most of my life in Laval.
@@DaveMani it's the accent 😊. Thanks for such amazing videos, always so interesting!❤️
Love your content. Is your home office table motorized and how much did it cost you to buy here in Kenya.
Looks like an ergonomic height adjustable desk. Surprised to see this in Kenya.
My employer provided these at work...now working from home since April 2020.
It is but I brought it from Canada.
finally!!! Well done.
Yeah!!!
I guess it's expensive because economy of scale and high barrier to entry. Congratulations Davi... Capt.
Thanks ✈️😎
I’m a huge fan of fpv drones and build my own drones. The last thing I want is all these unnecessary over the top regulations that stifle ingenuity.
I really want to get into FOV next!!!
Travelling from Aus to Kenya and going on safari in a few days. I'm so sad i won't be taking my drone now. The drone regulation in Kenya is insane. I thought it was a hassle in other countries but i will never complain again lol. Wish you could get international accredited licences for them or that smaller drones, like the one i have, only required an online application
Sadly most African countries are making it expensive and close to impossible to fly drones...
Congratulations 👏🎈
Thanks!
Amazing stuff
Thanks Davis :)
Cool work station/setup!!! Can i inquire on where u got the table ?
Got it in Canada sorry.
Kenya school Nice school many Canadian pilots and aircra beautiful video.
Drone stuff is different tho.
i appreciate the edit @ 3:36. cool
Thanks 3)
You have done a lot promoting and showcasing Kenya & Kenyan businesses to the world and for that i would like to say a big ASANTE SANA
Our pleasure :) 🇰🇪
Which camera do you use? Its pretty nice shots
Sony a7siii
Those prices are outrageous.....the med exam wasn't even necessary tf
Like I said... It is not cheap for sure but because of all the requirement from KCAA the course is 2 weeks long...
Must have copied all these from licensing of an actual pilot... That medical and even the units studied 🤯🤯 I'll bet that astral is owned by someone at KCAA
I want to know the name of the music you used on the end 8:00
I have no clue haha sorry. I download hundreds of songs every months for my videos...
A little question. Did you ask if you are now allowed to use the title "Captain" in front of your name with that licence?
Hahahaha I don't think so but I'm gonna do it anyway! ✈️😎
Hi Dave, congrats for been licensed. Where is the school located?..
Just in Nairobi close to Westgate.
Congratulations.!
Thank you
We ❤❤❤❤ you!
Thanks!!!
Thank u
Cheers
Wow, I actually flew my drone several times in Kenya without a problem. The DJI drone I was flying, however refused to flying while around the Carnivor grounds..DJI has a protective mechanism that will not just stop the drone from flying, it will also ask for your contacts if you insist.
Those are new regulations nowadays , started few years ago
Yes DJI is great for that but with a licence you can ask KCAA to fly in those zones and unlock it on Go Fly.
Maybe coz Wilson airport is next door?
One sub from Uganda
Welcome onboard! :)
Congratulations Dave nice to have a licence you never no 1 day in Canada they will start to need licence to to fly drones was it worth it or not Dave nice Kenya licence are recognised in Canada and US just you need to fly and prove to them I think so enjoy you holiday in Thailand 🇹🇭 when are you coming back come back safe hope soon we c videos of Thailand 🇹🇭 🇰🇪🐘
There is license needed in Canada too but Sadly the Kenyan one is pretty much only recognized here in Kenya...
Awesome 😎
Cheers 😎
in the building watching from barbados 😎😎😎
Thanks for watching as always :)
where can a get that adjustable desk in Nairobi
I got it in Canada...
Here I was thinking I want a drone… jokes on me. I admire Dave for going all the way through to ensure he does everything right with the law even despite the costs.
Doing my best! :)
Interesting.
👏👏👏
Thank you!
This looks so fun
For sure :D
Just a quick question from a new subscriber. With the license, does it mean you can basically whip out your drone anywhere in the country and shoot, no questions asked?
I wish! 😅 Even with the license, you still need to ask permission to KCAA everything you want to fly.
@@DaveMani That feels like a lot of work! I wonder if its the same in other countries.
and it must be within sight and no remote controlled view thingy
Namibia 🇳🇦 loves you
And we love Namibia! Can't wait to visit!!!
Nice vedio 👍
Thx
Where did you get your controllable desk from?
I got it in Canada... sorry
antarc furniture have several options of a similar desk
Thanks
I remember this law was passed after someone's drone landed in the Deputy President's official home. Crazy how this country passes some laws. Nonetheless, I'm happy for you buddy.
Thanks a lot Arnold! :)
You need to visit the northeastern part of Kenya
I'm sure we will.
Is FAA part 107 certification recognized in Kenya?
No. They only recognize their own licence.
Aye, Aye, Captain Mani 👨✈️ You're now licensed to fly in the CBD?
Everywhere in Kenya 🇰🇪
Interesting!
Thanks :)
I love Kenya my home country
❤️🇰🇪
Am A Kenyan I want you to visit kahawa wendani
Ok :) 👍🏼
Is there wildlife or scenery in Wendani? I bet not. I guess you didn't get the memo of what this vlog is about🤣🤣🤣
Can you use the license in other countries? You said in one of your first videos that you'll tour Kenya for four years then travel to another country...
If awarded under the appropriate ICAO category, you can use it in other countries, or do a conversion
No, this license is not recognize by most countries.
Hi Dave, please recommend some good places I can buy a genuine drone in Kenya
Any good camera store like snapshot, vividgold and more.
Am in Kenya and didn't even know I needed a license for that. Thought you just buy and fly 👀 but why the medical test?
Yeah... it is not well known still but the consequences are reel. Prison and/or millions of shillings...
I would love to join drone schl
Drones are the best :p
coming from Canada i can understand your great despline of obeying the law otherwise in my country you can end up un big trouble...
Thats for sure.
@@DaveMani what’s your Instagram bro?
Awesome
Thank you!
Unless someone comes from a well off background, or is corporate sponsored...it's very very difficult to Justify getting a Drone license for that kind of money for the average citizen. Governments and their bureaucrats will always talk about how the youth should be "entrepreneurial and innovate", in those conferences while on Per diem, then go ahead and induce regulation and red tape that will only lock out so many of them from pursuing such opportunities.
These are the things we need to raise to the new gov, take advantage of the new change.
This is purely due to safety and security issues.
I do agree that this is some serious money.
@@martino6205 Yeah, no, I'm not buying into this "theory"...
Take UK for example, one is exempted from getting either or both of the Flyer/ Operator ID if they're flying a drone less than 250grams and does not have a camera; should you choose to get a heavier drone with a camera you can get an operator ID for £10 valid for 1 year on a renewal basis and a Flyer ID which is given once one passes the theory exam (open to all people above 13 years.) Aside from that, one is required to diligently follow the Drone and Model aircraft rules and regulations. The median workers Salary is around £26,000 annually. As this proves owning and operating a drone is accessible for most who are interested in them.
In USA, one is required to get a "Remote Pilot Certificate" from the FAA, which will include a theoretical test. It costs $175, then you can renew annually for free. After that one is just required to follow the regulations set for flying drones. Making $200 in USA is just a few hours/days work, since the median annual salary is around $54,000 or $1000 weekly. Hence again, this proves owning and operating a drone is accessible for most if not all who are interested in them.
In Kenya, to get people who can easily afford to pay Ksh 150,000/= for something that doesn't consist of a basic need ( medical service, school fees, black tax, vehicle & home maintenance etc) is really difficult. That is why I insist that unless one comes from well off, is of a very high income job or corporate sponsored, it's very difficult to justify this cost.
(NB: I use Median Salary because this is Salary that majority of the people are expected to earn, Averages tend to be distorted by extremities in earnings, with some people earning extremely high incomes and others receiving no income at all.)
Unless you can expound how the Safety & Security aspect comes about to justify these Kenyan Fees. I hold my view, that this is just retrogressive fees & totally unnecessary.
I can make my own drone, can i fly it without all that schooling, and how will they know koz i can fly it remotely using my laptop, inside my house
True but if you get caught, you'll be in big trouble... I've been there! Loll
How long does it take for the whole course?
2 weeks
I’m joining, I know how to make a drone from zero is now to start building Kenya and Africa…
Lets do this!
How much for both classes, exam and licence ?
I explained the break-down in the video.
Do they do drug tests when you go for the medical
Yes
I love how you say gathoni farm 😂😂💖
thx
Did you say that guy Felix has 20 years of experience in flying drones? Where?
Yes. He was building them before.
What's the importance of the medical
Good question... I am wondering the same! 😅
@@DaveMani I saw the wondering face expression 🤣...
You mean there is a school? how much do they charge.
I talk about the cost breakdown in the video.
Where can I get the adjustable desk for my home office?
I'm not sure... brought it from Canada.
@@DaveMani thanks Dave 😅
hope the new govt is more friendly to us young people just trying to eek a living. the red tape is exhausting
In terms of flying drones there is for sure a LOT of restrictions...
Well done congratulations it is a lot of money but I'm sure as you say you will recoup that. But I wonder how the average Kenyan citizen could afford that amount.
It is for sure a big investment...
I just got a drone and paid 3000ksh to get the right to pilot for recreation here in american hii ya kenya ni kurusha wasee saa mrai atafika aje 125ksh!!?
Yeah... it's similar in Canada.
here i am thinking a can carry my drone with to kenya and fly it...
They would take it when they scan your luggage just before leaving the airport.
Why would they need medical record to fly drone
They treat it as a real plane loll
How was the training
Very good. It's just frustrating that Kenya requires a 2 week long training to fly a tiny drone...
What’s the name of the school
All their info is in the description.
Am kenyan we love you
Thanks :)
Are you still in kenya
yes
Finally
Yeah!!
Very sorry you had to go through our bureaucratic harassment.
It's all done now. 😅
