Hey Everyone! Today we're kicking off the second mod series of MODcember, the Epiphone EB-0/SG-1 Mod showcase! The Epiphone EB-0 is a deeply flawed instrument out of the factory with a terrible bridge design, lame pickup, and neck dive that would put an Olympian diver to shame. We're going to be addressing all of these flaws one by one to see if we can turn the Epiphone EB-0 into something worthwhile. First off, let's do something about that 3 point bridge.... Let's go!

I'd love to see a spectral side-by-side of it, but just from listening to the audio it sounds like it has added a little bit of clarity on the mids and highs - more noticeable when you're using a pick or slapping. Looking forward to future mods.

It does sound better with the new bridge. The sound is more... well, articulate. I don't how to put it better. It's less "hollow", so to speak. As if the midrange shifted to a more usable range. I'd put on a set of flatwounds though. This bass is NOT a slapper.

I did notice a slightly more consistent tone, but only just, better overall attack from mid and low mids. But it's the playability that comes from this thing that makes it necessary.

Replaced the stock bridge on my Tbird.
Who doesn't like a bridge that's tight to the body? Be careful when tightening. There's approximately a 1/8" "void", for lack of a better word, under the bridge for each bolt, I assume to allow for clearance for the lugs that are pushed into the body which are not flush to the body.
If you really torque it down til it's "tight" you will pull those lugs out a fraction of an inch, as I did. I had to reseat the lugs and shim the voids with 2 washers til they were flush with the base of the bridge.

Man, when you hate a bridge, you really hate that bridge! I'm reminded of that same intense hatred from your review of the Tholmannbacker bridge. Remember that contraption? But I actually kinda like both the traditional 3-point bridge and that of the RB-414 (just gotta keep track of those loose saddles when changing strings).
All good though, thanks as always for putting in the work. At least sparked me to check out any potential mods for my 2011 Burny SBEB-65. It's a '65 Gibson EB-3 clone (even headstock and maple neck). So I may not, it's pretty good stock for an EB-3. Can't really be much more than it is, I think. Gonna go play her to confirm.

I learned to "master" the 3 point stock bridge in my MIK Epiphone Flying V, but know I need this Hipshot or the Babicz for precise intonation and lower string height (it's comfortable now, but not as low as I usually love.) If it could go lower, I would stick with it, but there are limits, and some of the screws are a bit chipped by now due to all the tinkering I have done to it. It needs manual help for it to work after adjusting the screws, and the G does not intonate up to a certain point. It is a mess right now, though it's perfectly intonated to its current strings. I could not get perfect intonation with the RS88 tapewounds I had on before (honestly blame the bridge, not the strings.)
I like the Hipshot functionality, but the stock bridge looks nicer on the V. Same with the Babicz. But for maximum enjoyment of that particular bass, I really should get to it soon (has great Lollar humbuckers in it.) It sounds great, but could play even better, and I wish to try the tapewounds again with a more "standard" bridge (it would not be about hi mass, but more maximum functionality-current bridge has limits.)
    Thanks for demonstrating it!

  • @VeitLehmann
    @VeitLehmann Год назад +1

There's definitely a noticeable difference in tone: more presence, more definition, faster attack, probably also longer sustain. A solidbody bass like this definitely wins with it. However, I'm not sure it would improve the sound of my Rumblekat for my taste. It sounds more modern, and that's not something that I'd be looking for. I also like the look of the stock bridge and I don't have any issues with its feel. So I hope it'll hold up and won't develop the dreaded tear-out issue.

Nice video. Hipshot does make great hardware. Dimarzio Relentless pickups would be interesting, especially the neck pickup.

Go for broke and eliminate the neck dive altogether. Chop the headstock off and make it headless with the hipshot headless tuning system. That would be a fun mod, though a tad extreme

"It just feels better" is why I often put high mass bridges on my basses. I end up rocking harder. They feel more responsive. Sound better? Conceivably, but there's not much difference. Here I felt like the new bridge actually did sound a bit better because the EB-0 itself sounded so murky to begin with. My old band had a 60s EB-0 that had come to us without a functional pickup. The Dimarzio Model One my bandmates put in it sounded pretty darn good. It was tighter and stouter than a Mudbucker, but still got the dark EB-0 tones when necessary.

I have a love hate thing with sidewinder neck pickups on gibson basses, like they super useful with synths and octavers because they are purely fundamental notes with not much harmonic quality, but wow they would benefit from being paired up with a clear pickup in the middle to be more usable in more scenarios

I did notice a difference: less chimey with the Hipshot bridge. Small difference, but its there. Same reason I used brass bridge pins on a very airy sounding acoustic guitar. I replace 5 of 6 pins with brass, and that airy tone became more low mid forward. I noticed a very similar event with your bridge swap; an improvement, to me. Definitely more sustain with the new bridge, but it loses a lot of the thumpy character which is this bass's only real redeeming quality.

no test with the tone rolled all the way down? you really dont get this bass at all (its tone and its history)

HipShot or Babicz Replacement bridges are the only way to overcome the original bridges, which are a phenomenal construction failure. I don’t understand why buyers still accept to buy such grap and why Gibson and Epi still produce these awful bridges.

That 3 point bridge is junk. My biggest problem with it the simple fact it floats over the body. I have to believe this limits the full potential of the tone. Also, I believe it is absolutely a contributing factor the the terrible neck dive.

Is the Gibson/Epiphone 3 point bridge the best bridge in the world? No. But I think it's a route one cheap shot to talk harshly about it. Set it up properly and it functions just fine. There are worse bridges to palm mute over. I still have the three pointer on my carved/curved top Epiphones (Les Paul Standard and Jack Casady) and I really don't care enough to replace it. I'm not changing strings every week. My preferred strings (D'addario XL) don't have silks. I can't be bothered doing anything to counteract the curvature of the body (seen some people use felt spacers). It does the job, while looking goofy like a three legged oil rig. I think it looks goofier on a flat top - the curvature of the bodies of my two mask its "bridge on stilts" look a little.

That is a 200 euro replacement part. I wouldn't spend a dime on such a dreadful design.

You gonna swap out the pickup too? It could only help!

I never thought you can have mud and no bass at the same time.
And I had one of these in the past but I didn't notice it. Only played it at a couple of jams though.

Is there a way to stop the buzzing? Or am I forced to get the Gibson?
