    I think what stands out about the 4K is not so much the resolution boost (I think probably the optics of the lens are on the soft side, but the reduction in DNR is greatly appreciated), but the colour and contrast which is greatly improved.

      @rkitchen69 3 года назад +2

      Exactly. This is why I especially look forward to ST6 as that blu ray is DNR so bad with all grain removed.

      Agreed 100%. The 4K looks a bit rougher, except for the recovered highlight detail ( 2:03 funny that in one shot the highlight is more blown in the 4K), but I appreciate the full grain structure of the 35mm film original. IMDb states, that the lenses used were the Panavision C-series anamorphic. So yes, these are a bit on the soft side, but I love that classic anamorphic look.

    I was stupid enough ;) to buy the whole set just for ST:TMP. And I dare say it is the best version I have seen so far. This is still not a perfect version but any further enhancement must probably lead towards a complete recreation of some of some of the FX scenes, and these, if not perfect, are beautifully shot and produced. As a real downside some scenes, most notably "VGER probe takes Ilia", are still blurry and partly out of focus - the "Ilia" scene always stood out like a sore thumb in every release.
    As for the other three movies, I see no real enhancements over the older versions which are absolutely fine. Therefore if you already have the old box the only reason to buy this box is TMP.

    • @jrv7346
      @jrv7346 3 года назад +1

      Have you watched the other 3? If anything, they are more improved than 1, the blu rays were really bad and they are much improved. The probe scene in TMP, was optically printed multiple times, a surprisingly complex effect, I doubt there's much they can with it. Perhaps the directors edition will see some revisions.

      @@jrv7346 Nope, not yet. Actually I have not watched III and IV in quite a while, I am not a big fan of those two. You made me curious, I will check them out over the weekend.

    I'm curious how they handled the subtitles for the Kolinahr ceremony; when I saw the theatrical re-release a few years ago the subtitles were incredibly blurry, and if I recall correctly they aren't great on the 2009 DVD.

    The remastered edition has too much image noise and it is really annoying in motion. I guess this is a byproduct from the color correction process to reduce the magenta tinting and re-balance the whole pallette, although some of the original film grain artifacts (from the double exposure effects) are vividly suppressed. Some exterior model shots have lower sharpness and detail. The remaster is also slightly cropped and stretched on the horizontal axis for some reason.
    Overall, this edition is a hit and miss with inconsistent quality choices.

      You're well wrong. It's not "adding grain" this is a complete rescan of the negatives and proper color grading.

      I’ve actually read a number of comments online that indicate the redness was how the scene appeared in theaters back in 1979. It’s the only Trek movie I didn’t see in the theaters, so I am not sure. In any case, it’s now a little more consistent with the looks we see in TSFS and TVH.

    Thanks for stopping the FOMO and saving me money on this lazy, bogus and incomplete set. However, I would like to see a comparison between the new Bluray editions versus the older masters.
