These Bathurst days were like Wild West motoring

Yes, great footage. Great memories. That was my Australia. Geoff and Frasier, blokes and birds, ACDC, Ian Cook, Kevin Denis, aunty jack, hey hey it's Saturday, and of course Bathurst. Best days of my life. Thanks.

Ah, back when Bathurst was interesting, and actually worth watching, unlike the last few decades.

Ford - with a fully factory backed team, great driver, great car - on a dry Bathurst track we're an unbeatable combination. 1971 was still part of Ford America's worldwide "total performance" era.

I remember me and my mates really looking forward to Bathurst at that time, we’d watch it all day, unlike today’s garbage. Seriously I wouldn’t cross the road to watch it today. They’ve mutilated the mustang, the commodore hasn’t been sold in this country for years and never came out with a V8. They can hype it up as much as they like: the drivers are sterile, I don’t know anyone who is as interested in it today.
Maybe next year ( 2023 ) will different with the cars( mustang and Camaro ) at least looking like the road cars. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Keep in mind, after the Bathurst 500 was run on the long weekend in October, many of the drivers lined up in Sydney for the Southern Cross Rally the following Wednesday. Busy times for the drivers & those of us that prepared or serviced the cars.

Love how they keep racing after a crash , no safety car just do your best to get around the crash & floor it.

Garry Cooke won his class in the Mazda that year, then drove a VW in the Southern Cross (unplaced).

@@MrGaz060 I bet you did. Could fill a book at least. We grew up In the same neighbourhood although he is about 8 years older than me. I got to see him a lot as I worked in a panel shop he visited often. We looked after rally, speedway and road racing cars. Busy times

No pit wall! how did you get picked to stand on the race track holding a lolly pop sign, that guy looked like he was directing roadworks traffic'' ho hum just another sunday standing on a race track" casual as. I reckon the gtho's would have been doing close to 100 mph by the end of pit lane, stuff that , guess they were made of different stuff then. I pit crewed for Bernie Stack in 83'and saftey protocols were way better even then only a few years latter. Rode a pushbike around the closed track after racing was over, I remember it being fully fenced over the mountain but conrod was still open to the paddocks. Ahh those were the days.

It was a little scary watching Bill Brown rolling towards us because we were on the fence not far from where he came to rest.
