Fantastic! I started removing some grass up our new allotment the weekend by digging under it with a spade for about an hour and got a lot less done than I’d hope. Seeing this has given me a new burst of energy to get back to it the weekend 😊
For all its faults, when youtube is useful, it's very useful. Just spent time knocking myself out trying to lift it with a spade and thought 'surely there's a better way'. And there is. Many thanks.
I wanted to do some shaping on my lawn, add curves etc and for a couple of days I have struggled as it's hard work, then today I went on google to find out if there was a simpler way of doing it and I found your video and watched it right through...had a cuppa then went to try out the final curve as your instructions and low and behold I did it in half the time...I'm 76 and didn't get too tired. Your a wizard , thank you. ..Helen
This is genius. I am doing my 80% weeds lawn in the next week or so. This will save me hiring a turf cutter. I live in Leeds and we too are blessed with clay soil. Cheers for the tip.
Hi, I just wanted to say a massive thank you for teaching me this! I recently did it using your method and it was so so easy! I was trying it with a shove before and it was an absolute backbreaker! I did my entire 40 sqm of lawn using your method. Can't thank you enough!
I'm gonna use this level out the garden which is currently uneven and on an incline. Dig the turf up, keep to one side, remove soil to level the ground and relay the turf. 👍🏻
Yes it’s a spring job but we do it anyway. Did mine all by hand trowel and a hand saw and hands. 6 hours, 48 sq feet. Sat on my bum on a cushion so I didn’t have to bend over. Great job. Looks beautiful!
Have a small tip or two that helped me when I opened up an area for growing potatoes, carrots, onions, parsnips and beetroots and might make similar jobs a bit easier in the future. Instead of using the garden fork you can use a cheap isolation knife and cut under the grass and then remove it. You can also use a small garden cultivator instead of the small spade to remove the soil from underneath the grass.
I kept using a narrow shovel to remove sod, and then pushed my whole back in it to get the shovel under the sod to loosen it. I hated the job so much that I pushed a project where I have to dig a trench for a new sprinkler line out now the third year in a row. After having watched your video I almost can't wait to go out there tomorrow and try your fork trick!😃 This is genius! Thank you so much!!♥️
Great video, thank you!!! I have been edging and digging out very dry sod with a pointed spade. I've always wondered 'why a fork?' (growing up on a farm a fork was used to clean out gutters and throw hay). Now, thanks to you and this video, life is much easier. Also, I have been watering for a few hours the area of sod I intend to remove which changes the cement-like sod to a less back breaking task.
Was just about to lift some turf in my front garden - SO glad I watched this video first! Now I know what to do, I don't feel so phased by it. Thanks for a great instructional video!
I went straight outside and tried this! Absolutely brilliant! Thank you. We have terrible lumpy grass. Just showed the husband we are on the rest tomorrow 🙌
Weeds it might not work as my weeds pulled through the turf and remained in the ground so they d need digging up after but lifts turf great and just leaves you with the tuft of weed to tend to after. Good luck with yours :)
Thanks so much for these tips. I have my whole back garden of weed-filled turf to remove. I tried before and only used the fork to make it easier to cut a line using the spade. I then did the back breaking side jabbing with the spade to cut through the roots under the sod to lift it. Loosening the sod using the fork is a far easier way. Duh, why didn’t I think of that?😂😂. I never heard of making a turf pile. I have a wee corner of the garden I could make one. Then when the pile turns to soil, it goes back in the garden. Excellent!
Thank you SO much. Such a helpful video! You made me feel better mentioning how hard this is and about encountering rocks etc. But most importantly, I've been doing this for days and it's been killing me, and you gave me the tip I needed... the fork! Oh my gosh I never thought of that. I'm going to get a pitch fork immediately, your way looks so much better. Thanks so much for this video.
I was just outside with my spade and tried to cut in sideways, and said to myself, “Nope this isn’t going to work; there has to be another way.” Sure enough, I just found your video! I am now encouraged again 😊
Thank you! This is the best video that I've seen on how to remove the turf. I am planning to build the drywell in the backyard, so I'll need to put the turf back once the drywell is comolete.
Thanks for this! I have a whole back yard i want to eventually remove the grass and plant native wildflowers and plants and have a pond for the wildlife and bugs, so this is so helpful!

Thanks for this video. We have been contemplating lifting our front and back lawn which grows like wild fire and the thought filled us with dread as it looks hard work. We'll give this a bash. New subscriber. 😊

Thank you for your posting- very helpful. The fork technique is better than a spade but when there are a myriad of small tree roots in the turf it is still difficult
It's good to see how smoother and less back breaking, not to mention enjoyable, a job can be when you try to work efficiently and apply a set of methods that work consistently through out the job. I would try to tank the turf out with a flat shovel after cutting it rather than lifting it with a fork first. Doing it the way that I did it was a lot of tiring work.
My tip is to use a mattock. Looks a bit like a pick axe but with horizontal blade to cut the turf. Just used one to cut 40 sq/m for a patio, and made the job dead easy. Definitely don't use a spade though!
Get's my vote too. Have just removed 25 sq/m of turf with a mattock. Cultivated the soil with a mantis and rake, then re-seeded the lawn. Didn't once use a fork or a spade.
Thats never going to be an easy task, whatever you do, but that fork technique is brilliant. In all my days I've never seen that tip before [if only I had]. Cheers Andy
Great random video that one 👍 I must admit I've always used the spade to dig up the turfs. Must try the fork technique instead, looks far easier 😊 A note of caution though, not so much for yourself Andy, but for other people reading this. Sometimes there may be covenants on strips of land bordering a driveway or highway, that mean they aren't actually owned by the homeowner but are retained by the city or county council because submerged utilities could be routed through them. If in doubt always refer to your deeds, they'll be highlighted on them.
Yes, that is true. Our town has that between where backyards meet so a homeowner is at risk of having to remove anything (like a fence), if the city has to get at the area. According to our city, a fence or structure is supposed to be 6 feet back from the property line anyway. It leaves us with a narrow area because of their 6 foot tall stockade fence running along the length property line, insread of us both having a green area between the backyards.
I have never heard of lifting turf with a fork before. Good idea. To improve the soil how about double digging it with some compost incorporated before planting.
and to think I was going to hire a tool for this I for once have everything you mentioned in the beginning lol - thanks truly grateful! plus a fab workout!
