  • Artie Shaw was so gracious to grant me this interview. I was 26, and had no business trying to parry ideas with him, but he invited and encouraged it. Later on, we collaborated on a few projects, and he became to me, as he was to many , a mentor. He would suggest authors to read that were to him, essential, among them Lafcadio Hearn, for which I'm forever grateful. Bravo and thank you, Mr. Shaw!

One of the great egomaniacs of the modern era. It would be great to hear an interviewer say “Stuff and Nonsense “ to Artie Shaw. Artie’s reaction would be entertaining.

Excellent! Thank you, Loren! A historical talk for those of us who grew up after the Big Band era, a gem of a chance to hear Artie first hand

I have a friend -- not a musician -- about whom I have said that I find an hour of conversation with him so intense it's exhausting, but REALLY fascinating and insightful. I think I would probably say the same thing about a conversation with Artie. Thanks for putting this interview on RUclips. I think you did quite well, despite your disclaimers, and the fact that you were sometimes barely able to get a word in edgewise.

He sure loved to discuss (ask Evelyn Keyes)
Did Miles fuss his notes? Dizzy sure did. Dunno if you cant do it on a clarinet. I guess maybe not.

He sounds insufferable. Maybe, we should ask his ex wives.

I tend to agree, but interesting nontheless.

Only if you can’t hear how brilliant the information is. Imo.

He was insufferable. Evelyn Keyes mentions him in her memoirs (available for free on the Internet Archive) and gives numerous example of his cantankerous, emotionally abusive behavior. One example: he would fly into a rage if she did not arrange his cigarettes in a particular way in the cigarette box, and if his favorite ashtray was not near his chair. Regarding a prior wife, he gave Lana Turner a nervous breakdown. It is amazing that Evelyn Keyes put up with him as long as she did. She actually admired him a great deal and put more emphasis on his good traits than on his bad traits in her memoirs. After their marriage ended they remained friends.

I’ve listened to this man’s music for years. I featured his music on my radio show for many time. Stardust , April in Paris , I cover the waterfront , and on and on. But “Jesus “ what an egomanic” no wonder he was married 6 times 😮
