MONK's BRAKE'S SAKE - rhythm track with Percy Heath/Art Blakey
Here is a rare opportunity to hear Monk, Percy Heath, and Art Blakey as they accompanied Gigi Gryce on BRAKE'S SAKE.
Saxophonist/composer/bandleader Gigi Gryce (the subject an excellent biography, Rat Race Blues: The Musical Life of Gigi Gryce by Noal Cohen and Michael Fitzgerald) was a favorite of Thelonious Monk's in the 1950's.
This quartet session, recorded October 15, 1955 under Gryce's name, produced three songs by Monk and one by Gryce.

SHADOW WILSON and Monk #2 - 1948!
Просмотров 27914 дней назад
I’ve always been fascinated by what Shadow Wilson played on the original Blue Note version of Monk’s I MEAN YOU. Coleman Hawkins was the first to record this piece almost two years earlier - remember, Monk had been his pianist back in 1944. You’ll hear the original recording (remixed to amplify drums) followed by drum track only. There’s a link to the original in COMMENTS below. In almost all l...

I’ve always been fascinated by what Shadow Wilson played on Monk’s first recording of I MEAN YOU. Coleman Hawkins was the first to record this piece almost two years earlier - remember, Monk had been his pianist back in 1944. Here we have the 78 take twice with drums remixed to predominate. There's another version with the 78 take here on RUclips followed by drum track only. There’s a link to t...
ART BLAKEY - with Monk - Epistrophy 1957
Просмотров 70914 дней назад
Has there even been a musical partnership closer than that of Thelonious Monk and Art Blakey? Not to my knowledge. In 1957, Monk called John Coltrane, Gigi Grace, Ray Copeland, Wilbur Ware, and his mentor, Coleman Hawkins, to record MONK’s MUSIC. Something happened in the middle of EPISTROPHY where the regular 32-bar form got off-kilter, and Blakey came in which a thundering solo to right the s...
A STUDY IN MAX ROACH

A STUDY IN MAX ROACH - 1947 It's hard to imagine how NEW Max Roach's playing must have sounded in 1947. He had his influences (Jo Jones, Sid Catlett, Chick Webb) to be sure, but he took them and came up with something without precedent, and that includes even the pioneering work of Kenny Clarke earlier in the decade. This clip features three versions of Charlie Parker's Klactoveedsedstene - tak...
Lester Young I'LL NEVER BE THE SAME

This one of the most well-known of the Teddy Wilson/Billie Holiday recordings, which starts with a piano chorus that is a crowning achievement of jazz paraphrase. Lester's obbligato has also attained classic status, but now we can hear all the notes that were obscured by Holiday's voice, and we are the richer for it. Teddy Wilson And His Orchestra : Buck Clayton (tp) Buster Bailey (cl) Lester Y...
Lester Young's CHANGES MADE - 1941

From my essay included in the MOSIAC box set Classic 1936-1947 Count Basie And Lester Young Studio Sessions: Velvet. That’s the word Pulitzer prize winning composer (and former jazz pianist) Mel Powell used to describe Young’s sound at this juncture in his career. These four tunes and two others captured on a contemporary broadcast are all that remain of the first band Young formed after leavin...
Lester Young - IT"S SAD BUT TRUE 1941
Просмотров 88314 дней назад
Lester Young reached a peak in 1941 as he started his career as a bandleader; it was a peak in terms of tone, melodic invention, and sheer other-worldly beauty. Sadly, something kept him out of the recording studios at that point (obscure hint: possibly The Bringdown). No session for his own band, but just this date where they backed up vocalist Ina Mae Carlisle, a last pre-war session with Bil...
Lester I LEFT MY BABY 1939

One of Lester Young's most haunting obbligato's was played behind Jimmy Rushing on the minor blues I LEFT MY BABY, recorded November 6, 1939 in Los Angeles. Here are both takes (the alternate is first) - pure beauty!
BACH: Pablo Casals/Coleman Hawkins
Просмотров 56914 дней назад
Coleman Hawkins started his musical career playing the cello, and for a few years and for a few years doubled on cello and saxophone in bands. Until the end of his life, he held Bach as the ultimate composer, in whose work all of the challenges facing jazz musicians could be found. Hawkins did for the tenor saxophone what Pablo Casals did for the cello: reveal the majesty and sheer power of the...
Louis Armstrong's 1926 HEEBIE JEEBIES - a cappella!
Просмотров 29914 дней назад
The first recorded instance of Louis Armstrong's scat singing - something he had been doing since he was a child singing with his friends for change on the streets of New Orleans, but this Okeh 78 record made it the scat heard around the world. Through the wonders of technology, here it is without the band accompaniment. February 26, 1926 Chicago
Prime 1940 Lester Young unearthed for the first time (well, after a fashion).

One of the greatest jazz partnerships was that of Lester Young and Billie Holiday. Their small group recordings between 1937 and 1940 produced some of the most indelible recordings of the era. They did record together in 1941, but it was a tightly arranged affair with no room for Lester ad-libbing beyond the solos. Lester's sotto voce obligatto on the 1940 TIME ON MY HANDS has always been such ...
