SHADOW WILSON and Monk - 1948!

  • I’ve always been fascinated by what Shadow Wilson played on Monk’s first recording of I MEAN YOU. Coleman Hawkins was the first to record this piece almost two years earlier - remember, Monk had been his pianist back in 1944.
    Here we have the 78 take twice with drums remixed to predominate.

    In almost all later versions, there’s a strong left-hand figure on 2 and 4 against the melody. Listen for its absence and the wild things Wilson does with his bass drum.
    There are many other interesting things to listen for, and none more so than the spontaneous piano/drum hit at 1:35. This one ranks right up there with similar moments with Blakey and Buddy Rich (yes!).

    Shadow Wilson on drums? Sweet! I always thought it was Art Blakey. Also, great photo selections and video editing. 😀🥁
