Reviewing Goddards PIE AND MASH with JELLIED EELS!

- Oh no. I've been hoodwinked into trying jellied eels with my pie mash today. Originally, I thought it was going to be our very first pie mash video, clearly the cameraman had other ideas. Enjoy the video! (and me suffering).
Please don't forget to like and subscribe to the channel.
Would you recommend for us some great pie and mash shops?
I went to Goddards about 6 years ago. It was fantastic. Not just the quality of the food but the price. So cheap for a very touristy area of London. I also love jellied eels too.
Really nice place. You're right, very cheap given the location. Stay tuned for tomorrow's video as it's a battle of the best two pie and mash shops in London!
I'll let you have the jellied eels, I'll steer well clear! Thanks Mark.
That is good value for a decent homemade pie. Looks very tasty!
First time watching this reviewer & channel - As an older viewer,50, who remembers the 1980s, I can't help noticing he's better than the vast majority of professional TV people from that era .....
Thanks mate. Glad you like the channel.
I’ve had the eels and pie and mash since I was a nipper . Always a bowl of jellied eels on buffet table at family parties . Well done Gary for trying them . 👍😊
Thanks Jim!
Seen the price of the plastic tub now? Love them!
Agree, a family 'Do' wouldn't be a 'Do' without a washing-up bowl of Jellied Eels!
I'm a Londoner and I've never eaten jellied eels and don't intend to start. They may be traditional but so was sending kids up chimneys.
Indeed!
Made me laugh. USA
Another popular seafood in South London when I was in my youth, was winkles for Sunday tea. I'll not go into detail, but they don't look good, when you've winkled them out of their shell with a pin or needle. Any true Londoner will agree with me. They are very tasty, and popular here in Gascony, France.
The pie & mash (and tea) looked very good and amazing price for London ! But I don't blame you for not liking the jellied eels - thankyou for taking one "for the team" !
More than welcome Robert! Not for me are those Jellied Eels. Unpleasant haha!
Goddards in Greenwich is TOPS! I visited this pie and mash shop ( I'm a Londoner) and it was so good I could have licked the plate! Highly recommended! Jellied eels great too!
Brilliant place to go!
The Pie and Mash looks lovely, but Jellied Eels looks like something the Klingons would eat in Star Trek.
Haha very good shout!
Gagh 😅
Lived in Australia for 35 years, last time I flew back my first stop was Tubby Issacs jellies eel stall …LUVVVVVERLY……..You don’t know how lucky you are!
Haha, Thanks for watching!
Sadly, Tubby Isaacs is no longer there. I used to visit Spitalfields often, and always made a point of grabbing some whelks or jellied eels from Tubby's stall, but it ceased trading about ten years ago.
Hi Gary
Really enjoying what you are bringing with these reviews to what is a very saturated food reviews market on youtube. Keep on with the great honest videos and look forward to many more from you 👍
Hi Pete,
Very kind of you to say those words and I will keep bringing you content that you hopefully enjoy, hopefully you've subscribed! Let me know if you have any recommendations for food places!
- Gary
I totally agree, so nice to see varied food content instead of just fish & chips and breakfast. I’m a new subscriber and binge watching the back catalogue
@user-wv8cs4si4n haha that's what I've done, went through all the breakfast and steak ones mostly in one sitting.
Jellied Eels are the dogs! Love them. You can't go wrong with pie and mash, so tasty. I like to get the boat down the Thames from Waterloo to Greenwich. Lovely day out and so much to do there. Nice video, thank you.
Haha I’ll leave them to you Nick. Thanks mate!
Only to Mockneys.
Aye, mixing the Pie into the Mash FTW. (always curious to try Jellied Eels tbh)
I'm told stewed eels are better. My father in law loved both. I've only tried jellied eels once, that was enough. I love the liquor though.
Love pie and mash. i love mine with stewed eels too. Jellied eels are the food of the gods. One of my very favourite things to eat. I have never understood why people don't like them. At least you tried then though which is more than a lot of people do.
Have to try everything once but they're not for me. Glad you enjoy them though - thanks for watching!
Jellied eels? Gary you are a brave man! I love fish and all seafood and I like smoked eel but jellied eels have a nasty texture. Well done for trying them! ♥
That pie, mash and liquor looked lovely. Parsley sauce with steak pie sounds so wrong but it really does work. I think it is nicer than gravy. The 10/10 was well deserved.
Didn't fancy it Gary - it was the cameraman's idea. I still haven't forgiven him. Thanks mate.
Surf ‘n Turf for the working man. Goddard’s is my go to Pie and Mash shop.❤
Glad you liked it mate.
Jellied eels, Really! Yuk 😂 can't fault ya Gary, enough to make anyone sick, however the pie mash & potato looked spot on! Really good, great review mate 👍
Haha thanks Tel. Yeah not for me mate, glad you don't like them either! Thanks for watching!
Before the industrial revolution the Thames was clean, eels and oysters were cheap food for the working man. Archaeological excavations in London have found tons of oyster shells.
After the industrial revolution Eels were about the only thing which could survive in the Thames
I restored a Georgian vegetable garden at a country house. I was constantly digging out oyster shells.
Austrian checking in. pie and mash in the uk i found pretty good. eels the jelly way was at alright at best. like eels much better fried or grilled.
Love Pie and Mash, not too sure about the eels though!
- Gary
The pie and mash looked lovely Gary, I've only had it once in another part of London and it was awful with lumpy mash and a naff pie, but I'd like to try it again. Jellied eels are one of my seafood favourites, but alround the cafe looked nice and the price is excellent.
Yes it was!!
Honestly you should mash it all up and add vinegar and pepper it brings out all the flavours 😋
I now know for the future. Thanks for watching!
Mash up the jellied eels! 😂You only do that if you don’t like them. Then you shouldn’t buy them in the first place. Adding the vinegar and pepper to the is obligatory to the pie and mash, and jellied eels.
Another interesting video Gary. That pie meal deserved your high score. The jellied eels provoked me to suggest you try TRIPE and ONIONS when you go to West Yorkshire - another acquired taste but very good for you. Good luck in Leeds, Philip.
Thanks Philip 😊 I’m looking forward to it!
Gary I can save you a journey to West Yorkshire, just get a carpet tile/remnant, put in a frying pan with some chopped onions for 5 minutes, and then serve with gravy...the taste wont be 'far off' and you may actually prefer it!
@@teddyb4957 Thanks Teddy - it sounds good!
I've tried tripe and onions twice in eight decades, and I have gagged on both occasions!
@@pippin1ful My mother used to love eating tripe and onions. I used to feel ill just looking at it.
😂 You are very brave. I will have to take my pie take away to get away from those eels😂
You should! Anything to avoid them lol.
Gary, you have more courage than I do!! I've never and I never will.
I was stitched up by my son unfortunately
Jelly eels looked very appetizing, I love um, great review👍
Thanks mate 😊
I could murder a bowl of jellied eels! Gary, you are a whimp! I had my first bowl in 1954 when I worked for my Dad on a Saturday. Jellied or stewed, any day. The pie and mash looked fantastic too. 10/10 for both. I wish Goddards was in my village!
I’m a massive wimp lol
Looks so much better and tastier than the pie and mash I tried at a shop in Kent.
Goddards is excellent.
After watching the Maureen's video yesterday I decided I'd make pie, mash and liquor for dinner today. A minced beef Pukka pie in the air fryer, instant mash with plenty of butter and pepper, and home-made liquor made with a Tesco fish stock blob in half a pint of hot water, loads of dried parsley, thickened up with cornflour and a drop of milk. Spot on, it was. The last time I went to Greenwich park I got back home before I realised Goddard's was just there at the bottom of the hill! Missed out on those lovely eels ;)
That sounds delicious! You're lucky you missed out Simon lol.
Watching you get the courage to eat those jellied eels was very amusing. I imagine I'd be just the same.
Oh they were not good Dirk.
I remember taking my family to this place 33 years ago. Interior was a lot more basic then, still clean and utilitarian. Just looks posher now. Quality then, and glad to see nothing has changed. Gary, eals, vinegar and pepper, food of the gods my friend.
I understand Ken I did enjoy the eels but definitely not the jelly
Very brave to try the jelly ells, I could not have faced that. Great video as always
Thank you very much, Rose. I actually liked the eel but not a fan of the jelly.
been to that restaurant multiple times an have had every pie my friend
Goddards has a shout for the best in London. M Manze is excellent as well. Thanks for watching!
I thought you were very brave to try the jellied eels Gary. I wouldn't put them within an inch of my mouth haha. Your cameraman must have been having quite the giggle at that one. Very funny. Pie and mash looked yummy, not so sure about the sauce tho. 😊
I was putting on a very brave face lol. Glad you liked the video Louise! He was having a right laugh 😊
@@GaryEats I bet he was tee hee hee 😂
Gary,
Would you consider trying out 'The Garden of India' in Harlow, Essex?
Voted the best Indian restaurant in Essex very recently.
Its a place we often take our friends and family when they visit. The food is exceptional quality
I can add that to the list without doubt my friend. Could you point me towards the website that says they're the best? Cheers Matty.
Do they do pie n' mash and eels?
I actually really enjoyed home-cookedneels, but NEVER jellied, which are disgusting! Lol
We used to live by the sea, & my hubby used to catch eels, and I made some great meals with them, mainly stews & pies - & my first ever home-made liqueur, too, which was yummy!
I have to confess that I'd love the mash and liqueur, but I really don't like beef mince - actually any shop bought mince, really!
I'd deffo try the cheese & onion pasty with the mash & liqueur, though! Lol
This was excellent apart from the jelly on the eels Katy
Jellied eels are lovely. People are put off by the look but they are lovely
Wasn't a huge fan of the texture or the taste but each to their own! Thanks for watching.
Nah, they are nasty… as he opined, an acquired taste but not for me.
No. I tried them once and the taste was one of the worst things I have ever tasted. I really hoped I would like them, too.
Loved the Pie and mash with gravy. So glad we ate there on our visit to London.
It’s absolutely fantastic
You were game to try the jellied eels after eating, my stomach would have turned. I have had smoked eel and it is very nice, completely different to the jellied eels.
I wasn't feeling so good during the review, lol. Thanks for watching!
Pie and mash you can’t beat it wonderful food and don’t mind the eels wonderful too
Indeed. You have the eels and I’ll have the pie!
I used to work in a pub in London. This famous fella used to come in every Friday. The land lady would make him dripping on toast. Feel for you bro!
😮😮
theres a good chance those eels come from Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland, most end up at Billingsgate or Holland as they are not that popular over here, the thought of eel juice with mince pie yukk, give me some traditional gravy anyday
Interesting.
Me and the missus stay at the Intercontinental at the O2 every now and then and we cannot leave that neck of the woods without my wife getting her fix of pie mash and liquor, woo betide me if I try to skip it! It does get really busy so we hit it early, not long after it opens. We also go across to Boisdale in Canary Wharf, it’s owned by Jules Holland and have some dinner whilst watch a band, it’s not cheap, but it’s fun.
Thanks for that Daz, it’s a great piece and mash shop
Liquor is basically the jelly from the Eels with parsley and thickening 😊
Love liquor but not eels!
Gary I was raised in paddington london in church st I brought up on pie &mash and eels the best pie and mash is in camden town now wonderful !!!
Superb Derek. Not sure about the eels though.
...I'm with you, jellied eels are off menu.
Re kindled a few childhood memories for me, with my Grandad in Walthamstow 😎☯️🍻
Do not iike them at all!!
My favourite Pie n mash shop. As they offer choices, and the food is good.
It a top place to visit
Love the pie and mash not the chilly vinegar, and definitely NO to the jellied eel's, great value for money 💰
The value is incredible!
It's funny, when I first moved to london 18yrs ago I lived in Greenwich for a good few years - back then Goddards was where GBK is now and where Goddards is now was the local gay bar Powder Monkey.
Don't know about pie but definitely been mashed in that building a few times 😂
I love Goddards. Superb pie and mash!
Try Golden Pie, clapham junction Gary, for an independent pie and mash place it's the bomb!! It's a few doors from the 24 hr Asda
Thanks Liam I’ll take a look
I went there 2 weeks ago 1st time. Was good bit pie and mash with graby I had. This location where they are now was a pub called The Cricketers years ago
Great stuff!!
Gary you should have tried the hot/stewed eels with liquor; I think a lot of people don't like them as a) their look/the jelly, and b) in our western diet we are used to savoury things being hot, and so being cold puts people off...think about Trout that also has a similar 'earthy' taste, would you enjoy it as much if it was cold?....I love both varieties, but being so expensive they are now only a treat, and to think years ago they were considered poor people food!
Teddy the eels are definitely not for me 😂
@@GaryEats 😆😆😆
Another enjoyable video Gary, have eat here many times over the decades-along with the first ever Spoons the Clock Gate which opened in 1980 as you prob know + the Fish + Chip Shop-Jack the Chipper 😀
As for the Eels, why didn't the cameraman order the hot ones instead of the jellied ones?
I also really like how they do Vegan stuff there as well!
The cameraman is not nice to me Mike lol
@@GaryEats So it seems Gary lol
My walk most mornings Gary. One of my locals is almost adjacent to Goddards.
Very nice. You're lucky Peter!
Went here a lot growing up, and always loved eels! Just push all the bones out the middle with your thumb and you’re left with a lovely bowl of meat n jelly. Grab some lemon, vinegar, tabasco and a nice crusty roll. Cant get better.
Thank you!!
I prefer to eat the bones. They are easy enough to crunch up.
Yeah good old p+m lovely 😊 We lived in Canary Wharf so Greenwich was not far on the old DLR fabulous 😊
Very nice Greg.
You trying the eels, reminds me of the first time I tried an Oyster on Isle of Sky - took me ages to put it in my mouth, but love them now.
Haha. Might need to give them a go again!
Jellied eels one of things on my bucket list
Good luck!
I like the look of the pie, mash & Liquor. Very nice! As for the jellied eels.............nah!
Great value for money & in all honesty, the sort of place you could easily become a regular at.
Thanks for watching!
just found this channel really nice bloke liked the content
Thank you Matt. Very kind of you!
Did you not fancy trying the stewed eels!.......by the way proper way to eat pie, mash+licker is with a spoon+folk, good video mate
Thanks for the advice Barry 👍
The pie and mash looked very nice. I've never had jellied eels and never will. YUK! I had to look away as you put that first piece in your mouth.😫
Lol. Don't blame you!
@@GaryEats 😂😂
Fun fact Gary...really chuffed you did "our" Goddards...plus my great grandfather Frederick Marshall(able bodied seaman 2nd class)served on The Cutty Sark !!!
It's a lovely place Alex!
Pie and mash shops are fantastic value, long may they survive.
Completely agree :)
Jeĺled Eels is the guvnor. Lovely
I'll leave them to you Dave, thanks for watching!
thanks for the pie and mash video 😋😋😋
Most welcome 😊
I lived near the Shepherds Bush jellied eel cafe for 20 years and never felt the need to indulge!
I can understand completely Bob
Very very nice!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
We smoke our eels in nz. Taste amazing and are much more appetizing to the eye.
Good to hear 👍🏼
Hi Gary 👋 I'll eat the pie and mash no to the jellied eels 😂😂
I love jellies eels .
I'll leave them to you mate!
Oh dear you are doing it all wrong. Pie, mash, hot eels and liquor is the proper way to do it and shake the chilli vinegar and white pepper all over it. I could have eaten all of that. Yummy.
Bit late to this one Gary but it looked great value for money, especially in London.
As for the eels well they're the ultimate "marmite" food aren't they.
Not a problem. Yes they are very much so
Omg im so hungry 😫 i want pie mash
You're not the only one. Would love some too!
@@GaryEats gonna make a lamb curry today loads of chilli garlic and ginger and a garnish of corrinda 😋
Enjoy!
Now that made me so hungry and such good value un real 10 out of 10 all day long 👌💯👍
Excellent Frank!
You definitely need the chilli vinegar in that place to give it all a bit of flavour! Im not sure im buying all the comments in the video🤣 Its more nostalgia and tourists than foodies. To me its just slop on a plate from the days when that's all they could afford to eat!
Ah it's lovely Nick. Yes it needs chili vinegar!
I've paused the video at 4:56 with the following thoughts:
1. Jellied eels, especially whilst I'm eating, are not very appealing to me
2. I would still eat them (I have never tried them before) if presented with them in the manner that you have been
3. I reckon that you'll like them
For now, I'll just let you give them a go!
Haha, If I have to eat them then so do you!
@@GaryEats After your review on them I still would. I'm a fan of items with an acquired taste!
I used to like jellied eels. Pie and mash whoever, that is food of the gods, and that looked excellent. And I have discovered they will ship pies and mash to UK addresses. God's in his heaven, all's right with the world.
Pie Mash is excellent. Can't wait to do another video on it soon!
I travel down from Tyneside to get my pie and mash.. love the stuff 😋
Sounds great!
Lovely bowl of eels there mate but try using a spoon instead of a fork with the pie and mash next time its easier! your food channel is becoming the go to place for honest reviews well done.
Thanks for the tip and I've just filmed a Pie and Mash video where I use the right technique. Thanks Jack, all the best :)
@@GaryEats Great👍
amazing, can you do a behind the scenes how you make your wonderful videos
That could be an idea for the future!!
I would try the jellied eels. What I would never try is TRIPE! Would you Gary?
I’ll try anything mate (except mushrooms)
Yup, pie and mash rules, ok, Gary!
This was an excellent pie mash
Rewind ! Yummy 😋 💥💥
So good!
@@GaryEats used to have one in Fulham Gary sadly not there no more mate got a small journey but once a week like always 😉
That's annoying Mark. What's your go to now?
@@GaryEats Harringtons tooting mate old school always great 😊
Well done Gary , at least you tried them eels, be mushrooms next.
Thanks Tony. Maybe we shall see lol
Love jellied eels!!!
I’ll leave them to you!
I’ll leave them to you!
Thats fine, hate to see them go to waste lol
Just one thing Gary, if you wanted proper East End pie and mash why did you go to south London to try it. Though it does look nice.
Fair point. I've got a pie and mash video coming tomorrow!
when in London I always go to goodards, never tried the EEls, I have tried bBq eels in Japan and they where great but can't stans aspic jelly
As you know this is a excellent piece and mash shop
Nice
Thank you very much, John
I didn't like olives when I first tasted them, I am wondering if eels are the same. They should have them presented more appetisingly for first timers maybe. That said, I can't see an establishment steeped in tradition changing its ways for anyone. The liquor intrigues me, is it similar to anything you've tasted in the past Sir.
Yep, a very acquired taste
....I may have to binge watch your videos.....
Really hope you do Tony, thanks for watching. Lets also hope for a win today!
@@GaryEats A win is granted :-) Best
Braver man than me... Only things I won't eat are jellied eels and oysters 🤢
Give me a plate of mushrooms anytime 😊
Goddards is a great place - Drive past it most days and the Cutty Sark 😁
First and last time, Graham! Glad you enjoy Goddards!
There's nothing like a good maggot pouch!
😂
The eels are delicious! Makes my mouth water! 😂
Oh god Jean. If we ever go for pie and mash, you can have them!
I love pie and mash with lliquer don't like eels thanks gary for sharing hi to your son ❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉
You are so welcome and will do
I love jellied eels pepper and chilli vinegar mmmm
Very nice
I don't like Jellied Eels, basically they are water snakes. Pie and Mash great.
Spot on.
"revenge is a dish best serve cold"
delays his salary
Hahaha
Hey Gary - what no mushrooms! . . . . 😎👍😎
You got that right!
Keep up the good work. Really enjoy your reviews.
Glad you like them John. Means a lot.
If as you said at the start tradional east end dish. But. Godard’s is in south London
It is 👍 Pie and mash shops all over the country 🤷♂️
Hmm, well back in the day it would have been a lamb's meat pie? Steak & kidney, mince beef etc are relatively modern additions.
👍🏼👍🏼
JELLIED EELS, and EEL sauce, i won't lie i googled this first as i thought it was a wind up, but people really eat this it says, ohhh
Once and only once. Never again! Thanks for watching.
Put the eel piece in your mouth and roll it around to separate the bone from the meat then spit the bone out into your pinched fingers. QED. oh... and use lots of vinegar and pepper.
Thank you for the tips Kevin.
