Rhythm Roulette: Charlie Heat | Mass Appeal

- For the last Rhythm Roulette of 2016, we linked with the man responsible for some of this year's biggest tracks: Charlie Heat.
The Grammy-nominated Charlie Heat is a name you'll be seeing a lot more of in 2017. Since working with Lil Uzi Vert early on, the Jersey artist Charlie Heat caught the ear of Kanye and has been on a tear ever since.
We headed to Philly to see how Charlie comes up with this stuff. After hitting up a record shop, he walks out with The Best Of Fabienne Delsol & The Bristols, Mutabaruka's The Mystery Unfolds, and a Lou Reed record. After he finds his first golden sample, he slowly adds layer after layer for a certified banger. He continues hunting within the records and ends up making a whopping four beats in total. But for the final beat, he decides to work from the ground up, building it from scratch.

"literally from scratch" had me dying
Rhythm Roulette (Charlie Heat Version)
beatsbykos take your W sir
Denavio Leeks L
big facts ! good work charlie
I see you are a man of culture as well
He didn't cop out and head to the soul section. He had an open mind and turned all of that disparate music into hip-hop. That's the essence of hip-hop right there. Great episode.
I appreciate how seemingly simple, yet effective his approach is. He makes quick decisions which resulted in 4 bangers. Well done.
"Quick decisions" AKA doing very little actual work.
why are people always assuming making music is supposed to be "hard." Some of the best songs were created in the shortest amount of time. Your job as a producer is not to have the most musical talent. It is to deliver a desired product for your desired taste or artist.
NIKK BLVKK exactly. anybody can find a 2 bar loop and and drum tracks to them
i hear all that but the biggest challenge at least to me is arranging a beat😰
I agree, even though the beats are kinda simple he gets shit done.
Out of all of these, Charlie made something that somebody can make a hit song out of.
MaLiQ Delshaun sounds like good work, Charlie.
He's not the only one. Check Just Blaze, 9th Wonder & DJ Dahi just to name a few.
You speaking the truth
I know why Kanye like this guy now
Fr
This dude is extremely talented. Not to mention has one of the best tags out there.
*One of the most 'PERFECT' tags out there.
@@vrishindutt2249 what
This is one of the best RR i have seen so far
no where near the best
your opinion.. just like i have mine
True. But it's really not.
Well share your opinion, I've seen a lot of them, which ones do you like the most?
FreeWxll tbh, I'd probably have to choose between the big krit one and the 9th wonder RR. This isn't far behind tho. this definitely had some heat.
This dude just made 4 dope ass beats! He sure lives up to his last name!
that second one is catchy af
3rd one crazy too, dope bassline
The Connexx nah that second one is odeeeeee i agree
I've never seen a producer use FL Studio and Logic at the same time lol
AKAtv2100 That how you as an producer create methods for yourself
AKAtv2100 for real lmao
I dont understand why he would want to use both of them tho isnt fl enough?
He probably started or got accustomed to Logic and the drums are too easy on FL so he uses it for that
yeah he just makes the drum patterns in FL and arranges the song in logic
Good work Charlie
G-G-Good work Charlie !
😂
That last one ignorant as hell 😂 Charlie definitely went off. That baby Jean song sounds like some Teen Titans type shit like when they were trapped in that British dudes place
deadass.
Dat Teen Titans reference tho.
SoVersetile reference on point
Denavio Leeks lmaoo you hip as hell bruh
Denavio Leeks hell yeah. I got a lot of heat waiting till September of this year. Why what's up?
That last beat was ahead of its time about 3 years😂 now every Kenny beat Rico nasty joint sound just like it. Good work Charlie! 👍🏾
Jesus I been fiending for a new rhythm roulette and y'all came through.
can we get a rhythm roulette mixtape please. it's long overdue
Anthony Morrison right
Clearing all the samples would be a nightmare good luck to the legal department
Eliburgo mixtape not album
Charlie Heat is the most under-rated producer around today.
Mass Appeal, please make a playlist of all these beats on Soundcloud or Spotify cause they're so fire.
this guy is talented. i want to see more of him
Thank god for Charlie Heat, the first version of Facts sucked ass
this one is up there for suree
The second beat was easily my favorite. that drum fill at 4:13 going into the trap beat was absolutely insane.
ikr i fucking jizzed my pants
Yo I thought the same thing! That drum roll was hot
I need to know the name of the sample cuz I could barely understand him
@@YungSlit baby gene
This is one of the best ones I've seen next to 9th wonder. Good work Charlie!
He flipped these so quick and effortlessly son got bored an just made an extra beat from a malfunctioned record scratch. imma def keep my eye on him for 2017.
It's been a while had to come back and watch again... so fire!!!
It would be dope honestly to see THC in this bitch.
Tha Swami 💯💯💯
Tha Swami fareal though i like the stuff they did for dom kennedy on the yellow album
one of the best Rhythm Roulettes i've seen. i've heard of this guy & enjoyed a couple of his productions before, but i'll have to look out for his work this year because he really impressed me here.
that 3rd beat nasty
bsterthegawd. hi
oh hey bster
Facts lol
I watched a bunch of Rhythm Roulette after this and have definitely gained a greater appreciation for what he did here. Fire.
They need to get Harry Fraud or Clams Casino next!
isaac huerta That would be lit. Ty Beats as well.
The way bruh flipped the sample at 3:05 INSPIRED THE FUCK OUTTA ME FRFR!!
Pitched, looped, and added microwave drums??? To each their own I guess.
Pierce Capone xvyry 06
Favorite episode. Always come back to this one.
Even though I'm old school hip hop I love his style !!!!!
Nick Dee He does a good job paying homage to Boom Bap and merging with trap
The editing in this video was really nice. Big ups guys!
He just killed it ! 4 fuckin fire beats....
This one was great!!
beat 1 - 2:38
beat 2 - 4:03 or 8:04
beat 3 - 5:50
beat 4 - 7:12
look like Denzel Valentine
True Journey
nah, Ryan Leslie
True Journey He reminds me, a lil bit, of Flylo.
lmao
damn he does look like ryan leslie lmao
without question, one of the most talented producers I have seen on this show. he didn't skip thru shit. 4 songs? 4 beats. Amazing.
dope as hell i like how he jumps on it without too much skipping and at the end with the beat from scratch 🔥one of the best ep's I've seen
He on Logic & FL Studio my god! Charlie Heat is 🔥🔥🔥
I would love to see madlib but... yknow how he is...
Skyverz brah *GASP*
Frederick Bingley nvm my fault i thought he did
Frederick Bingley Madlib would be a disaster. Producers him are not good under pressure, they are more or less perfectionists. Restricting his creativity would yield something rushed and the RUclips haters would swarm
madlib would be the best!! he would honestly make something interesting I feel because I assume rhythm roulette doesn't really have time limits unlike the make a beat in 5 minutes one. I feel like the more out there records he gets the better it would be though.
Greg Savage naw, I'm pretty sure there's a vid of him makin a beat on the spot with ease
THIS MAN IS SERIOUS!!! Made bangers in different daws and everything!!! SALUTE!
This is definitely my best Section of rhythm roulette! OMG 🤦🏽♂️✨
One of the best episodes ever in my opinion.
humble and dope. Guys like him, Dahi, Wondagurl, Jake One and few more will stand for years.
All three beats are awesome!
I watch this video everyday. This is a master class
That 3rd joint was 🔥🔥🔥 had that dark feel & the drums knock💯
Good job, another man did all the albums, A+++++++!!!!!
This dude is a MONSTER. Salute.
Heat and 9th wonder, my favorite RR so far. Keep up the work guys!!
This dude is dangerous to music... Abnormally creative... Love it! About the best this year...
that first beat is lit
EricTwister all the beats are.
Does he make his beat in Fl studio and then send his trackouts to logic to mix them ? That seems like it's a lot of work
Flagrant Its not hard, just track out your sounds in FL, then upload them back into Logic (thats Logic btw). Certain softwares bring a certain sound to production. I do it sometimes but since i dont have FL on my Mac thats what makes it difficult lol
PACKbeatz I know that's logic lmao. I said that. But it just seems like so much work for you to mix it and go back in forth with DAWs when the track is gonna be mixed by an engineer anyway.
Daniel K that's exactly what he does. Always do drums in FL, that step sequencer is Godly.
it's not hard to bounce from FL.. you literally just click on "split mixer tracks" when you're exporting and it automatically does it for you.
thefleyeingmonk I know this.. it's just not normal to switch between Daws like that
First track : I like how he put the sample in a key not many ppl would have chosen. Thats what made it stand out.
Second Track: this track just shows that your drums really do make the beat! Those hard hitting kicks and snare made the beat stand out even more. Reminds me of something Wondagurl would make
Questlove to start off 2017 will be 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Zania Vaeluaga Damn straight that would be flames!!!
Calgary Flames! Hes wearing a gold flames pendant, and that is great.
this was dope.. didnt expect this guy to be this good
All of these were bangers 🔥
About time! I been wondering where RR disappeared to. Dude made 4 beats and all of em bang in their own way. Son is sick, thanks Mass Appeal.
I've never seen someone make a beat in the way that he did. That approach is amazing.
Have JFilt on here
PEACE and POSITIVE ENERGY
He'll be picking things from the supermarket to sample! That's my dude!
HeadNods Let's GET INTO IT!!!!! 😂
Veeeeeeeeeeery Siiiiiiiiiiick Beeeeeeeeeats!!!!
Welcome welcome welcome 😂😂
Underrated!! Let's get Frank Dukes next!!
taquila yang he would probably sample himself lmfao
Four of the best beats ever on this show Good fucking work Charlie
Ok mass appeal when you take a hiatus, you return with 🔥....not this....no way is this the last RR of 2016...absolutely disappointed......that being said you had an amazing year with some really inspiring pieces keep up the great work!
Still waiting for the day I can find these on soundcloud
this guy is good
In my opinion this was the best rhythm roulette. A lot of content in a short amount of time.
great episode!! beats were 🔥🔥
Notification squad like
Hunter Sanders Ayee!
think he might be the best sampler in the game as far as new producers go.
clams casino is also a new trap producer whos dope with the samples
U ever heard of madlib ?
Or ye
This deserves many more views!
The dopest jawn of them all was the scratch into a beat. I dont know why, but you gotta love beautiful accidents in the studio! 👌🏾💯
Charlie Heat is the truth
ALL OF THESE ARE SOLID BANGERS
Man bout time, I thought y'all wasn't going to bless us over the holidays.
this stuff straight sick can't get it outta my head
This is clearly a good episode. Why 37 dislikes??
dbcooprrr Because people hate the generation that much, and modern drums used instead of boom bap.
You realize the "modern drums" are drums from the 80s, right?
Kenny Lopez People equate more so the way they are use now. Of course those drums have been around since way back, but other idiots don't believe it and equate that whole style of producing to be "trap" even though trap is a genre of rap like gangsta, boom bap, and etc. I guess I could've worded it better because it's more so the way the drums are sequenced and the frequency at which a certain type of kick, snare, or 808 is used, but you should know what I mean or are you just that slow... 😕 I +1 your comment for a good try at being a dickhead thanks for that buddy.
Tu Maldita Madre no they’re not lmao
@@XD-ly7fp The Roland TR-808 drum machine came out in the 80s so bascially yes, although the current trap style is based on 90s Memphis rap and 2000s Atlanta trap
To be frank, I'm not familiar with him, but he's definitely dope. Enjoyed the episode.
BoChosen His version of Facts by Kanye West was the one put on the Life of Pablo.
Tha Swami : Appreciate the feedback. I'll have to get in gear and do my homework. Respect...
BoChosen No problem!!! But that's not his best beat in my opinion. He's worked with a lot of different rappers. He's more diverse than you'd think, I thought he was just decent till I heard some other beats. I think he's worked with Tre Capital, Lil Uzi, and some other artists of the same realm. With the exception of a few others. He definately could carry a couple bad rappers with some of those beats in his backpack imo. No disrespect to Uzi but he definately doesn't deserve some of the heat he's getting even if I do fuck with a couple somgs...
A lot of creativity in this one. Enjoyed it
bro this just opened my mind as to how great charlie heat is
That Metro Boomin kit! haha
Get metro on here
Don't understand why people comment on the page to hate....none of y'all can sample like him. Y'all are WATCHING for a reason, just appreciate the greatness and learn from it man. All love.
Flawless Victory. I don't know many new producers, but this dude is the real deal
Put Wale on the second beat, and Asap on the 3rd
FreeWxll and put Ye on the first
Strictly Music he'd be perfect. For some reason i can imagine 2 Chainz on it too
FreeWxll Hell yeah I can see Wale snapping on that 2nd beat.
yeezy on the 1st and pusha on the 4th
That's it, I'm switching from Ableton to FL. So much more flexibility.
Love seein' Lou Reed - "s/t", def in my top 20 albums of all time
He made something out of all those Vinyls! He definitely brought his last name
The first 2 beats were cool, but weird af. I can imagine Jay-Z rapping over that first one, not sure about the 2nd. I feel like Talib Kweli or RZA would kill that grimey 3rd beat. Def my favorite beat from his creations this episode. Charlie Heat has potential.
wtf you mean potential he was on life of pablo
Ocean Sage that Rza type beat was crazy
LOGIC PRO X GANG!!!
This guy has a serious ear for flipping samples, I've seen a lot but this guy is unbelievable.
mass appeal didn't disappoint with this one. Charlie Heat is definitely heat
Shout out to repo on south street
He uses fl and logic at same time? Defuq?
Arian Ka He rewiring those 2 daw's, uses one as a slave and the other as a master. Using the best of both worlds.
Ribeirosfate can you explain the slave, master thing? thank u
I JUST HAD TO WATCH THIS VID TWICE!!!
Definitely a banger!
Frank Dukes or Allen Ritter please
Please tell me why you didn't continue killin that guitar loop....woooo that shit was flames!
Dope, one of the best ones in awhile imo. Would love to see EA SKI up on here!
Damn this dude did bring the Heat!!! Just Thinking out loud!!!
