The obvious reason is if his contract demands go up too high as a result of this season. I think Leafs long term plan has always been based on JT taking a significant pay cut this year. If he doesn't take as a big a pay cut as they want, he's outta here. When you're 34, you aren't worth risking half of what they are currently paying him, even for short term.
He has played horribly since putting on the leaf jersey. If he is going to pock up the slack in his last year, that is proof that he is not worth a contract with them. He will just go back to his old playing and be worthless.
@lovewinsall77 dude don't play "Mr i know everything". JT was not worth his last contract and the leafs paid for that. They could have been spending money on a goalie and stacking the defense. His contract was brought up every season as the kicker to any deal they made on the cap hit. Don't tel me I don't know what I am talking about. He was not worth his last contract and I think he owes leafs and if ha can't sign for 3.5mil over 2 seasons then they should get rid of him. There is way better Tallent out there for cheaper and the leafs need to start pulling together a playoff team period.
As a Sens fan, i hope the Leafs change absolutely nothing. Seems like things will work out like they always do. Leafs are an easy out for any team in the playoffs
Where are all of the fans dissing this great player not long ago? How I love his comeback success, even if it’s just for one year. Now, if only my favourite of all athletes, Bianca Andreescu, could be reborn, even if for just one more big win. That’s would be the apex for me, even more than the Leafs winning a Stanley Cup. C’mon Bianca! You know how strong you are!
If he takes the 5 million then the Leafs would be stupid not to take it. In three years the 5 million will be like 2.5 now, He will be a valuable 3rd or 4th line centre.
The one contact leafs management holds the cards on. Tavares moved back home to start his family. (3 kids now) He 100% does not want to move. If a team friendly discount is out there…this is the contract. $4.5m x 2 years $4.0m x3 years Take it or leave it John
@@Kavkaz7Z looking more like it with his results this year. Why is it that every leaf that hits contract year, preforms well. Knies will be getting paid also. Tavares: 5.5 x5 Marner: 11.5 (same Willy) Knies: (really will depend if it’s a long term deal or bridge deal.) My guess Leafs won’t be able to afford an 8 year deal for him. It’s not his fault that management doesn’t understand team building. Perhaps if they traded Kadri for a legit mobile shutdown Dman things would be different but Kadri for Barrie was downfall. That being said Isles lost him and produced 2 ECF appearances despite the roster didn’t improve after him leaving.
i don't see why he wouldn't since he is from the area and that was kinda the whole reason why he signed was to go back home with family and fulfill dream of playing for hometown team. He isn't quite the alpha dog he was in the 2010s but he's still going very strong within production so why not? If i were the leafs, I would do maybe a 2 year extension for $5-6 million so he can hit that 500 goal mark in a leaf uniform and retire a leaf at an appropriate age by 2027. I am not even a leaf fan although i have always been very fond of tavares individually.
No the leafs should let him go the front end is too heavy and they need to build their defense up and get a top 5 goalkeeper. They can't play playoff hockey until they get that done.
Absolutely not. His trade value is higher than it’s been for a while and at the price tag he will demand, it doesn’t make sense. Marner needs a new contract and we need to trade taveres now while his value is this high. He’s too old and this is his last season at this level of productivity
@ Exactly so the logical action would be to attempt to trade Tavares now while he can negotiate a new contract with a new team now before the deadline while he’s performing.
There would be zero reasons for JT not to remain a Leaf for the rest of his career. He's a beast and has been since Junior. Knock it off.

@c_telking4433 we are talking current roster here buddy. Sens had more series wins in 2017 than leafs have had since.
@@evanferris5035 Then we aren’t talking current roster. Tkachuk has been there since 2018 and never seen the playoffs.

What forty goal score gets paid five million
Hyman being the exception because he got his money before the fifty goal outburst
The tag on the video is about hockey, but most of the video talks about some other sport.😅

JT # 91 has played very well so far this season! 3rd or 4th line centre next season. 2 years at 4 mil max, per season?
Only if Tavares gives the Leafs a tremendous hometown discount. His acquisition and contract spawned "the gold rush" which shackled the salary cap.

The pandemic was the problem because the cap didn't go up. It wasn't John's fault
@@PhillyLeotardo25 ... I agree with 110% about the Kadri for a legit mobile shutdown Dman. Wasted opportunity.

Let some other team overpay for his services next year.
