Your videos have such amazing and in depth details and you have helped me learn so much more about my board in a much easier way than hours of trying to figure stuff out. I've been skating for almost 6 years now and you are by far the best and most well rounded longboarding youtuber I've seen, your tutorials are amongst the best and when my friends ask me for tips I've started showing them your videos to watch because you produce tons of great and in depth content. good luck to you and skate hard!

    I'm glad that it wasn't just a placebo effect. When I first got on stock 9" R 44 Cal 3's, I couldn't believe the feel under my feet. It's not that Cal 2's feel bad and when set up properly, they can feel really lively. These just have some new goodness in the rake and the bushing seat that give it extra sparkle and add customization to an already beautiful stock feel? 👌

    I just bought some more Venom plug barrels to experiment with in my Caliber III trucks. Going to try out 90a/93a plug in front and 93a/95a plug in back. Should be interesting. I definitely already noticed that I didn't need to tighten the kingpin nut as much as I needed for just the stock 90a bushings.

      Yo peeps! I just spent a day trying out reverse rake on the caliber 3 44 degree 9"'s. Here's a few of my take aways.
      1st thing. The center zone (the range where the truck isn't progressively turning) is much broader, meaning, that it takes more input in the form of lean to make the trucks begin to turn (this does not mean less lively on the contrary).
      2nd thing, the moment you begin turning they want to start turning back the way you came which makes for some super fun carving. i would go so far to say that these feel better this way for carving, especially if the continuous carve suits your style. The key thing about this is it feels like you are already 1/4 of the way into your carve, trajectory wise, once you even begin carving! Its hard to describe but think of it as a head start in your carve.
      3rd thing. The arc and which these trucks turn with negative rake gets more sharp the more you progress into your carve. This results in a feeling like your trucks want to ride on rails and keep you on a line no matter how much you work at turning or leaning to get off/change lines. This is a particularly rad thing if you enjoy spending alot of time drifting corners. Think of it like a cheat code to nail lines.
      4th thing. If you thought calibers had gangster lean, then i'd go to say that Calibers with Reverse rake have OG- lean. Super mega lean! If you enjoy turning while leaning and sliding then this is what you need. Paired with tall bushings and the insert bushing barrel, the lean turns into a super charged lean which dives aggressively yet gradually. its a feeling i can't quite describe but give it a try and you'll see what I mean.
      I road these trucks on a 30+" wheelbase, topmounted on a Rayne Demonseed 42 with Tall barrels Boardside and Plug Barrels roadside. I find personally that this combo really emphasized the particular expressions and characteristics of the trucks so that I can feel exaggerated characteristics from every truck I try. After having ridden these on this setup I'm gonna go ahead and reccommmend setting these trucks up like this on a Longer wheelbase in the 24"-26.5" range on a board with some drops.
      Go feel for yourself and let me know what you noticed!

    • @downhill254skate
      @downhill254skate  3 года назад

      Uhhh, the insert works very similarly (in trucks like rogues). I've found the plug barrel to have less "binding" towards the edge of lean and feel a bit friendlier. That said, it all boils down to how you setup either

    I feel like it’s safe to assume what the answer will be, but would you recommend these over the stock trucks that came with my longboard? My main issue is that my turn radius is just way to large for trying to get around the city and my college campus.

    • @downhill254skate

  • @LockShockBarrel57
    @LockShockBarrel57 3 года назад +1

    These are my first longboard trucks. I wanted to try the negative rake but I'm having wheelbites haha. Also, the plug bushings are good but the thing is, only Venom has it now so if your local skateshop is not carrying them, you have no choice but to get it ovearseas. But maybe Riptide or other companies will make it in the future?

    • @BayAreaLongboarder
      @BayAreaLongboarder 3 года назад +2

      Hey Venz! Flipping the hanger will definitely lower your ride height significantly but if you toss in a HARD 1/4” riser, you should be able to escape without wheelbite and experience the flipped lifestyle.
      Flipping your hangars will give you more lean and less turn and will give you a much more relaxed turning feel.
      I also wish riptide would get into the caliber plug bushings but these plug bushings have existed since the CAL IIs so it may have been more a lack of demand that was preventing riptide from jumping into the mix. (Venom bushings are made by the same company that makes caliber trucks)
      Hope this helps!

    Hi! How do these compare to the cast Ronins? I've been enjoying my set of Ronins a lot, but it's hard to get the cast ones nowadays. Your cast Ronin review was entirely from a DH point of view, I think you should give those trucks a go on a loose cruising / pumping / carving setup, like your dropcat if you still have them. They feel incredibly good when setup loose. When I set up my Landyachtz Swithblade 40 with a loose cast Ronin setup, I couldn't believe the amount of turn I got out of them. My turning radius feels like it's just under a meter, and the limit is wheelbite. I am still a beginner in pumping, but for a 42.5 degree symmetrical setup, I think they pump really well. I can hold my speed at around 20 km/h for a few hundred meters as a beginner before I get exhausted. Would love to know how the Caliber IIIs compare to the Ronins from a commuter's perspective. Not thinking of switching out my Ronins just yet, but if they are comparable then for my next board I might go with these... My only gripe about the Ronins is that the extra PU/rubber pieces don't really like wet riding, which these trucks do eliminate, as it's just the bushings and a regular pivot cup (which I could change out to riptide WFB if it's squeeky).

    • @downhill254skate
      @downhill254skate  3 года назад

      I did actually have the Ronins setup on my drop cat for a while. They turned a lot but were stable. I could definitely see them working as a pump setup. Max capps used a set of ronins for slalom so they can definitely wiggle.
      The calls turn a lot, I can't remember how the ronins felt exactly, but I would like to say it's about the same.
      And I didn't mention it in the video review, but in the writeup I mention that they are pumpable. Even with the drop through board Ic ould get them to pick up speed a bit.
      I'd rather the calls over the ronins. It's easier to get bushings for the cals and there are fewer parts. If access to ronin parts and soft ronin bushings was easy I'd pick them instead

      @@downhill254skate I’m 180 naked, and like a responsive ride. I have a 96a riptide barrel I can pair with my 93a plug I ordered for the rear.
      I canceled the order on my DT cybins because I needed the money. For the next two weeks I’m going to skate on the calibers and learn, I doubt I’m going to go faster than 30 or so in that time frame.
      After I purchase my cybins I’m going to use the caliber 3 trucks for a free ride setup on a castellated tesseract or a Kenny nap pro model.
      I highly recommend you check out and or make a video on the don’t trip Cybin precision trucks! They are only 380 dollars for both, which is cheap for precisions, still made out of 6061 t6 billet. Don’t trip is also the first brand to utilize the insert bushing and other precisions copied it after.
      Having the adjustable baseplate angles with the freedom you have is incredible. You can dial them in exactly how you want and change the hanger width setting if you want to switch wheels out and still match the rail width
