I actually really liked Aretha's answer to the soul question. Everyone has soul and it doesn't have to be always associated with a specific genre. In my opinion the essence of soul is truth.
It was just too early for Ree lol. Great glimpse into a very private woman. I also have been looking for an interview where she talked about the negative effects smoking had on the clarity and range of her voice. Finally found it.
what is soul? i will answer it in very simple terms (without the diva attitude)..doesn't take a genius to figure it out. it's a feeling. it's a range of sounds. it's not a physical essence. it's something a person feels from deep within. it's rare for an artist to make you feel soulful but 60s aretha certainly did (as did gladys knight/etta james/marvin gaye). lady soul had a voice that took you to another spiritual level. it's also the instrumentals, the handclaps, the background singers.etc. i may be being prejudice now..but i feel soul mostly comes from black history..black people (and i am white) just have it. it goes back to the church. to the slave days. to the suffering. and down to the genetic make up. black people have strong vocal chords. it's a fact.
Good explanation of soul. I don't know why Aretha didn't want to talk about it. It definitely had a lot to do with the church. Gospel music is an expression from the soul.
@@piustwelfth she was a Diva. was probably sick of having to travel far and wide for interviews. she might not have picked good vibes up from the interviewer or the setting. she might have felt unwell. however, i personally think she was just having a "bad attitude" day. as you say, aretha should have been able to answer that question straight off with no difficulty as she was the queen of soul!
@@Dion_Mustard I think you're right. She very much operated on her own terms. It seemed that once she realized that the interviewer was determined to get her to do something she didn't really want to do, like answer the "deep" question, she made a mental note to "NOT" answer it, as if to show the interviewer who is boss. LOL I could be wrong. I can be stubborn sometimes (we all can), so I recognize it in her. Sorry, interviewer. You weren't going to win with Aretha that day. She wasn't having it.
God knows i love her. This is probably the most I was annoyed by her interview. Those questions were not that deep. When you watch past interview before 2000 they touched on all of those things much more. She was just being dramatic. I still love her though.
Kevo LH , I don`t think she was being dramatic at all... I just think she wanted the interview to begin being asked lighter questions and then move to the heavier questions later.
hey, what can I say?...her time was valuable to her. Ive always thought that I could give a great interview with Ms Franklin, because I would keep it strictly about her music, off which Im very well read, even going back to her days at Columbia Records. The problem with interviwers like this chick, is that they just want the interview on their resume', so to speak. They aint bit more interested in Aretha Franklin the music pioneer, than they are about the physics of a lunar eclipse. And she KNOWS they dont care about her...which is why she threw the "bitch shade"
She probably was having a bad day, as she seemed unenthused about being there. She definitely could have been nicer to the interviewer, though she wasn't mean.
I love the way she conducts her interviews!
"We don't want to start off on that note either" Everytime I try to sing
I love how she still maintains control over what's happening even in other's elements. I love it.
Me too!! I admired so much about this woman and her being in control is one of them
Mrs Matt Murphy Yes! She has an amazing sense of self, calmness and awareness that’s very admirable.
I liked how Aretha put it. We all have our own SOUL
Aretha Franklin has to be the most intelligent entertainer out there. RIP
"I wish I never smoked" all of us do Ree 😢 RIP my queen.

Love this lady forever ❤️ rest in heaven 🙏🏽 mama Aretha Franklin
Great Interview!
@:15 I HOLLERED!!! She wasn't ready for a profound and prolific question so early in the morning! I SOOOO love her, it's soooo me!

What a great interview this was!
This was actually a great interview. She asks question that very few people would ask
A queen. A queen.
This was a really blessed interview. I don’t think the interviewer was hurt by it the slightest
Speak on the Soul 💯 yeeees❤️

Yessssssssss I got the feeling that she reeeeeeally didn't want to sit and do this interview.
I think she just showed that she controls the situation that way. Something like: "you ask me what I decide to be asked" - 100% Aretha style 😄
Kevo LH , I don`t think she was being dramatic at all... I just think she wanted the interview to begin being asked lighter questions and then move to the heavier questions later.
😆 lol
I think questions about her Dad were too personal for her. She’s grieving.
why’d they cut out the other stuff she said about Mary J Blige??????
Yeah, I play by ear. Tell'em, miss franklin 😂
She reminds me of Leontyne Price here.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

She was so cocky
Boy, Aretha was difficult. Simple questions. Why all the attitude?

Aretha Franklin don't play in her interviews she was not having a at all. 😂 😂 😂

@@ahlupenya4564 I think you mean Boss. And that’s Ms Franklin for you!
Poor interviewer. Miss Franklin patronized her like a badass.
