most likely an ovarian cyst that was removed and the peritoneal fluid turned up cancer cells--she'll be getting peritoneal chemotherapy to "mop up" these cancer cells and make sure they don't spread to her abdominal cavity

Preventative chemotherapy (or adjuvant) is done to "mop up" residual cancer cells that may have been left behind after the initial surgery. Hopefully, Princess Kate's chemotherapy will be successful and the side effects minimal.
