In this video:
As well-known for leading a flamboyant, playboy lifestyle as being the mastermind responsible for funneling $5 billion dollars (about $12 billion today) to Afghan rebels (when they were on our side) in their fight against the Soviet Union, Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson was a larger than life character who serves as a stark reminder of how different the political landscape was before social media and the 24 hour news cycle. So it should come as no surprise that his first introduction into politics was just as notable as his later exploits.

I knew Charlie in the 60s and 70s, and my brother worked on his staff. As colorful as his public persona was, his private one was far more fun and strange. A truly unique character and one I am extremely grateful to have come across.
Radio Far Side please elaborate *grabs popcorn*
And the radio falls silent
He was my childhood neighbor in Lufkin.
3 words to sum this guy up would be zero fucks given
Kameron Jones I don't know where we are going as a society but you won't have many more like him, and that makes for sad and boring times. He was an actual Maverick. Jake Paul is not an actual Maverick.
R T I know if you are going to be a player in life this the guy who laid down the blue prints
Given his sexual escapades I would say many fucks were given
Ha nice
TheRedKnight he should be the poster boy from Trojan condoms
“The working people knew I was on their side and the blacks knew I was on their side”
To say this man had a large hand in bringing down the USSR is not an exaggeration.
"Charlie Wilson's War" is a book no one would believe if it was fiction. An outstanding read.
And then there is John Wick
Holden Caulfield hohoho! Merry Christmas! 💋🍄💋🍄

Charlie Wilson is cooler than I thought
...found out something new today!
The Book 'Charlie Wilson's War' is excellent. The movie too, but the movie leaves out and changes a great deal. Half the book is about Gust, and everything in the movie about him is changed.
its true east Texas is the most forgiving and tolerant place ive ever been. its also a perfect place to live. cheap, cleanish, trees everywhere tons of wildlife rivers lakes streams and beautiful women we are also surrounded by cannabis legal states and will be ourselves soon.
If Charlie can become a congressman, anyone can.
charlie wilson is my spirit animal.
Wait, wait, wait! How many politicians are successful because of hard work and "playing by the rules"? Rulemakers get to create the rules, right?
I dunno and I don't... care?
rules are meant to be broke, thin outside the box
Vip3r011 Fo3niXZ I never had a box to think in. O.o
Omg, best quote of the day. You can teach'em to type, but...
good-time Charlie, one for the history books.
This dude is an American hero
Facinating eggskull. Seriously, you should insure it. That's why we're here.
Great video on a controversial figure. As he said, at the time who had heard of the Taliban then? If we had helped them set up a democratic government instead of just letting things happen, things might have been very different today.
*"As he said, at the time who had heard of the Taliban then?"*
The US government - as they were training and equipping them... as they did with guerrilla militaries, terrorists and so on since the end of WW2.
ABaumstumpf lol this was on point
I note that there's a whole lot of deflection and lack of consideration of consequence.... How very American.....
Yes, because we're the ONLY country to do that. All countries do this kind of thing. We all get embroiled in places that we try to go in & help, then things turn out so different. The Soviets, China, countries in Europe, in South America, are all guilty of this during their history. So no need to be so snarky.
Object a is 99% apple and 1% orange, Object b is 74% orange and 26% apple.... A is just an apple in all practical regards, B is mostly an orange but enough of an apple to comment on when it's actually of concern.....
This is the USA compared to the majority of world... USA is 80% deflection and lack of consideration of consequence, while the rest of the world is only 18% on average and therefore not filled with " deflection and lack of consideration of consequence"...
(numbers used are arbitrary and for illustrative purposes only)
That man was a goddamned American classic
this man makes me proud to be a Texan
"proud to be" geez we need to update our reading curriculum
haha all good brother, happy new year!
Thank you Simon. That was very interesting. it's good to know just how evil the Soviet Union was by going into Afghanistan, causing countless civilian deaths, causing upheaval among the populace and making the whole place dangerous and totally unstable. It's nice to know that the US doesn't do stuff like that to other countries, especially in the Middle East. Great job on the video Simon. You're one of my favourites.
I can't tell if this comment is dripping with sarcasm or not.
@@deusexvesania1702 I may be inviting the wrath of the God of Madness upon me by saying this, but yes, my comment was meant to be sarcastic and, after 4 years since posting the comment, I feel more inclined to be more sarcastic than ever, just thinking of what that great, revered 'doctor' (whose name I won't say here) has done to the world along with his 'experiments' and torture on Beagle puppies.
Charlie was quite the man.
Never thought In my wildest dreams that Lufkin would be mentioned in a RUclips video on a channel as popular as yours
That is amazing. Kind of makes me want to see that move.
I saw the movie several times and read the book. Both were well worth my time. Movie, as all of them do, took a few liberties with the truth, but it was basically correct and very entertaining. The book was easy to read, and obviously went into more detail and explained things well.
Like him or not, he made a big difference.
Thank y'all
Holy fuck don't mess with this man.
This guy should be more prominent in history books. He is directly responsible for bankrupting the USSR and in turn collapsing it. By the end of the life of the USSR, they were spending 25% of their GDP in that war, and the US barely had to lift a finger aside from a small investment and some training.
Happy New Year. I love your videos as they satiate my curiosity.
Great man and even better politician
I'm pretty sure Simon and everyone who works on these videos aren't human. I think they're robots pounding out these episodes on an assembly line 24/7
Funny enough, the average production time per script/video is roughly 24 hours (give or take).... ;-) So kind of a 24/7 thing. (Though with a quite large team to make it happen. :-))
... They haven't denied being inhuman and/or robots.
Now, normally, I would welcome our new robotic overlords. But watching too much Doctor Who, makes me know not to trust machines, or anyone not looking like a human with a British accent.
well you all do a fine job in my humble opinion.
How about a Today we found out how one of these videos are put together?
"oday we found out how one of these videos are put together?
Done already. Its over an hour.
How It's Made- A TIFO Story
ruclips.net/video/ok-ZX-FQeQA/видео.html
Fantastic video! This character is what the US Democrats need today
Happy New Year, Simon!
i would like to find out where the expression "im afraid not" came from. often used in the retail industry when a customer asks if they have a out of stock item and the employee will reply with "im afraid not". is it meant to be taken as i am not afraid to tell you i am out of stock or i am afraid you are going to hurt me for not having what you requested.
My husband was Charlie Wison
Now THAT is what I call a campaign of vengeance!
Love it. Can't get enough TIFO!
super fasinating
The stinger missiles did not have a significant impact on the Soviets during the war. Also, the West did not walk away after the Soviets left Afghanistan. The U.S, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan continued their support for the Mujahedin rebels against the Soviet backed Najibullah regime in Kabul.
Charlie was right. Afghanistan became the last straw for the once fearsome Soviet Union.
There is navy seal who chase 9 men though 4 countries for kicking he's doy
Dog sorry atrocities
Behold, the power of SPITE!
Best one yet

Sounds like a fun guy
This video was great, when I was very young I was in the movie but I never really understood what it was about.
The movie is like a trillion years old.

id vote for em ! this man is an american hero!
I like the cut of his jib.
I guess he hired his "Angels" to inspire the tv series and two movies
Anybody else thinking this guy literally sounds like a modern version of Dionysus from the Bacchae?
Nice
Simon, why is the water level in my Snowglobes dropping? Are they evaporating? They aren’t cracked and leaking. What gives?!
My answer may be a year late, but maybe you will still see it, or someone else who is curious as to why this happens.
Since snowglobes have to have a rather large hole at the bottom of the globe, to fit it over the scene inside, the glass edges are usually glued to the base of the snkwglobes, after the snow and water has been added.
Over time the glue may break down from being jarred around, or simply from degrading naturally over a long enough time period. When the glue is no longer %100 effective, small trace amounts of the water from inside the globe can start to seep into the miniscule cracks in the glue. Those itty bitty amounts of water eventually make contact with the air, and evaporate, in turn, making room for the next itty bitty bits of your snowglobe's water to secretly make their escape. Though it usually starts as an incredibly slow, and barely/if even noticeable process, eventually, the leaking and evaporation will starts to speed up. The water leaking through the now moribund (could also say, the glue which is now ineffective or, the now defunct adhesive.) glue hastens the disintegration of the adhesive, causing a cycle of f
Seems like a nice guy
Hero.
My kind of politician
You guys need to do an episode on Adam Worth, who is also known as 'The Napoleon of Crime" and is the basis of Professor Moriarty of Sherlock Holmes fame.
Well... thats one way to do it
i seen a documentry on him what a crazy dude he was hahaha
Why do people sometimes pronounce the word idea, “idear?”
Idear. your virtual gf
Because they're so stupid they don't know better.....
Robert Hilden accents
Robert Hilden i have no idear
Robert Hilden using one of my favorite comedians' arguments, why do you say "erbs" and not "herbs" if there's a f---ing H in it?
Wow wtf? Good job simon. Love this kinda stuff.
I fucking love this dude. Holy fuck.... XD
A man that stood steadfast in a changing condition that is not always relevant to the plight of men, women, and children.... People could learn a thing or two from him. This was probably the film that got me into politics in all honesty. The movie came out when I was 17 in staying with a foster family... gave me some hope in a shitty time that I latched to. Didn't know all of this though about the guy. Watched this video out of sheer respect for what that man did.
We need more men and women who will stand by their morals become the people they want to see in the mirror. No one's perfect. But if you stand by the people.... the people will stand by you.
If someone fed my dog glass, I would force feed that person glass.
ha ha legend.
What kind of person feeds crushed glass to an animal? Horrifying :O
I'd really like to see a video on Phoebe Snetsinger.
2:22 the most petty man to have ever lived
This is a good example of what happens when you fund "rebels". So let's stop funding Syrian "rebels". Let's stop funding Ukrainian rebels. And God let's hope we don't start funding "North Korean rebels". Let's stop interfering in other people's conflict and focus on domestic problems.
This guy was literally a harem protagonist
if you break it, you buy it. Yeah I agree with what Charlie said,if we had been there to pick up the pieces Afghanistan might have not been ripe for the Taliban.
Monster
Obviously just bumped in to this vid, great presentation, I think Charlie Wilson was just too cool......... pitty, I suppose, his type have been "filtered" out.
THAT Charlie would have made for a way more interesting movie.
2:39 a velvet knife of racism
Hey why can Labradors have black yellow and brown pups when the parents could be only yellow? Also why is there almost never a yellow/black mix pup?
Genes. Some genes are dominant and some are recessive. It's also why two dark-haired parents can have a blonde child.
Why does beer seemingly fizz forever
it's carbonated, and it doesn't
Am I the only one who, if him, would have killed Hazard in cold blood for poisoning the dog?
When I see animal abuse all I think about is killing the abuser. Judges are too weak and give 'em a couple years, I don't like that. I prefer more severe punishment.
Saudi Arabia at some point match the US aid dollar for dollar. In the 1980’s for the Soviet-Afghan war.
Fuck yes! Charlie Wilson is my new hero. Destroying someone who killed your dog is so great.
You want crazy Texas politicians? Do one on Bob Bullock.
He could have made this whole video into a Hiphop rap!
Charlie Wilson, creator of the Mujahideen. Thanks a bunch Chuck, much appreciated.
Speaking of politics and of Annapolis please do an episode on John McCain being the Tokyo Rose of the Vietnam War and blowing up the USS Forester to "shake things up for the boys"
I'm beginning to believe that in 100 years the word "American" will mean "A person who acts in a reactionary manner, primarily from fear, and deflects all criticism and responsibility"......
Kevin Booth You'd better get to work finding the people not acting like that. Although I have no doubt in humanities ability to blame the general decline in civility and native intelligence on Americans. You should check out a Chinese political forum.
humanities is a topic of study... you meant "humanity's".... Query: Did you even know the difference?
As for your response: Nice deflection.... You're an American, no?
Fuck yeah. That was a man. It's all about the big picture.
They took his Dog...!?
how do you think the #MeToo movement would have treated this guy?
azn1011 None of the women involved with Wilson are actresses or otherwise majorly involved with Hollywood.
It depends on whether his advances were unwanted or not. Something Democrats figured out that Republicans haven't is if you're open about your sexcapades, people don't care. It's when you try to keep them under wraps and go after people that do the same things as you that pisses people off. I'm speaking in general, of course. Rape and child molestation is where the line is drawn. I don't know how people would react to an avowed sheep fucker though. I suppose if you're open about it and the sheep is consenting, people might be more forgiving, if not accepting. LOL!
Don't try to make it a democrat vs republican issue, as if democrats come out of it smelling of roses for some reason. There are bad ones on both sides of all varieties. I've grown sick of this attitude that members of one party act is if their side is saintly and the other is evil. "Democrats figured out that Republicans haven't" that is the most BS line I've heard. This tribalism has got to stop if this country is ever going to get back on its feet.
What kind of a dog was it thought?...
0MindSwept0 A nice one.

7:30 - I note that there's a whole lot of deflection and lack of consideration of consequence.... How very American.....
Oil and morphine had nothing to do with it.
I would vote for him
In the movie about Charlie Wilson, you see Tom Hanks bare butt.
I was too busy looking at the women with him to notice.
What would happen if the united States mint stopped producing money for a day? How would the price of gold reflect it?
