My Uncle Eddie was lost at the Battle of Enewetok in February 1944. His body was never recovered. The Tomb is special and was especially so to my Mum. She was 19 and she answered the door to find 3 men in uniform who asked for my grandparents. Mum told me about this in the early 1970s and cried as she did. We lived in Ohio at the time but my family made 3 trips to visit the Tomb and Mum and Dad made another 4 to 5. Mum said she knew Uncle Eddie wasn't there physically but she knew he and the many other unknowns were there in spirit and pride. Info: Uncle Eddie was a gunner on a plane. The plane was shot down and never located.

My father in law who was a Vietnam vet with the 1st. Air Cavalry Division was invited with some of his comrades to lay the wreath at the tomb. It was highlight in his post service years. He passed in 2017.
You should find a video that goes deeper into the selection and training of a tomb guard. Even with just how insanely meticulous they are with their uniform. It's a great watch.

He is buried in a highly decorated cemetery and had the gun salute at his funeral. I accompanied my Korea war veteran father on his Honor Flight. They were able to witness the changing of the guard. There were some silly, disrespectful high school aged kids making noise (I don't remember if they were talking, laughing or maybe a phone went off) but the guard stopped and yelled very loud to "have respect!! It was scary!! Anyone attending in the audience must be very careful, too... there are pick pockets all throughout the crowd. One of our WWII vets was pickpocketed that day. It was so very sad. But since the vet was in our group, we cared for him, and of course, he returned with us on the airplane. Even if he now had no ID or money.
Oh wow that must have been an amazing experience… my dad is a Vietnam vet and took his Honor Flight 3 years ago. I CANNOT IMAGINE kids being disrespectful… someone really should tell kids how to behave and have them silence their phones beforehand.
I remember a few years ago there was a “trend” of teens/early 20’s posing and taking pics showing off their LV bag, etc… in front of Auschwitz. I’ll never understand how disrespectful some people can be.
The thing is the tomb is near the center of the Arlington National Cemetery, you know Hallowed Ground, this is a military cemetery with the oldest military grave, being that of a Union Private Christman, W. of the 67th Pennsylvania. There is NO excuse for improper behavior.
I grew up near Arlington and have a friend who is interred there, so I've visited often both as a kid, and as an adult. I'd just got a proper 35mm camera and went to photograph the changing of the guards, forgetting the camera makes a clicking noise when taking an image. The noise was enough for me to be called down and a reminder issued by the guard, to everyone, to remember we were on sacred ground and should act accordingly.

My father was a Tomb guard known as The Old Guard, in the late 1940's. Outside of his kids and grandkids being born, that time was among the proudest moments of his life. I would like to think when he passed away in 2012, the unknowns met him in heaven, shook his hand and said thank you.
What many people fail to understand is why Servicemembers current and past get VERY upset when our flag is treated disrespectfully. Our fallen are buried under our flag. Disrespecting the flag, disrespects our fallen. Of not just the US, but ANY nation. You DO NOT disrespect a National flag. Even if you hate the Nation that flag represents, men and women are buried under that flag, and by disrespecting it, you disrespect their sacrifice and service. And that is dishonorable to the ones who have gone before us after sacrificing so much.

Thanks for taking an interest in something so special to my country! I've always wanted to visit there - I live way out in rural western part of the U.S., so a trip to the east coast is expensive. One of my relatives died in Vietnam and was never found, so that tomb is for him and all of the other unidentified and missing soldiers throughout our history.
I have two sets of grandparents buried here because I grew up around the Arlington Virginia and DC area. They are in the columbarium. It's so much more peaceful and away from tourists. I can drive right up to the gate and get saluted and pass through. It's a nice gesture.

There is a video where the guard's superior was inspecting his rifle and accidentally dropped it. The bayonet pierced the guard's foot and he finished the ceremony and marched for over an hour until someone pointed out to his superior that he was bleeding. He left little spots of blood at every step but he didn't even flinch when the bayonet pierced his foot.

There is actually a grave at the National Cemetery of the Pacific at the Punch Bowl in Hawaii where several sailors killed at Pearl Harbor are buried that could not be identified and returned to their families. It is a very solumn place.
Interestingly the 21 gun salute that you see most often is actually what is called a 3 volley salute. It's one rank of 7 soldiers who each fire 3 shots. An actual 21 gun salute has 3 ranks of 7 soldiers.
I'm proud to say my son similarly served (I do not know/remember the title) of aa sailor who works at Arlington Cemetary performing funerals. Similar in the guard in that they have to maintain a level of presentability above and beyond that of a typical soldier or sailor. He did that for several months as a volunteer which is again, is not something presented to everyone. He is a 4.0 Sailor and was even command advanced in paygrade to E5. I would have loved to have seen him perform his duty then, but I had already been a special guest to a previous award ceremony for him at his squadron in Norfolk.
The plot, the opening and closing of the grave, transportation to and from mortuary to the cemetery as well as the marker are free. Everything else is paid for by the family, pre-arrangement, etc...

“Here rests in honored glory an American soldier known but to God.” However this video continues the misinformation about them having loaded weapons. The rifles are not loaded and neither is the Sgt's sidearm. Ammunition is on premises though. They ARE NOT permitted to shoot unruly guests. They will not point their rifles at you, they will stand at port arms (not the "ready position") and give a verbal command. They do however have handcuffs and are empowered by the US parks police to detain blatant lawbreakers. more often than not guests simply are too afraid to find out what comes after the verbal command and just stop the grabass. In order for them to lock and load first of all they would not use the ceremonial M14. The Sgt of the guard is not empowered to give such an order. that would have to come from much higher up, if that order is given M4 rifles are located in the barracks or "dressing room".
Also, @08:56 a "21 gun salute" is a Naval tradition, going back to the 16th century, and refers to Naval cannon fire. Rifles are not "guns." and as you can see, there are not 21 rifles at play here. I hate these kinds of videos.

Call your rifle a gun in Marine Corps boot camp, and see if you don't get drilled around, chanting: "This is my rifle, this (your junk) is my gun. This is for fightin', this is for fun . . ."

There once was a guard that slipped and fell breaking his leg. He then stood up and continued marching until his stint was over. The x-rays showed that he fractured his leg in 4 places.
I had a friend who was a tomb guard. Sadly he passed away a few years ago. Much respect ❤
