- Four years after the groundbreaking superhero film Black Panther arrived, Disney has returned with its long-awaited sequel, Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. For his highly anticipated follow-up, writer and director Ryan Coogler tapped Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson-who was also behind the first installment’s music-to score the film. The process began before the final script was even finished.
With Black Panther: Wakanda Forever now playing in theaters everywhere, Coogler and Göransson stopped by the Genius studio to have an in-depth conversation about the score of the film. The longtime friends and collaborators discuss tapping into new thematic sounds; drawing inspiration from trips to Mexico and Nigeria; and bringing in strong female artists to help emphasize the movie’s theme of motherhood.
All in all, the score wound up being an impressive unification of multiple cultures and genres. “It’s crazy that this music has been recorded on four continents,” Göransson says. “[We used] over 200 musicians, over 40 vocalists. Everyone comes from different cultures and everyone has unique, distinct sounds. But on this movie, we bring them all together.”

The music in Wakanda Forever was much softer, more somber and used more silence than any MCU film, even with the added Mayan music with Namir and Talokan.
A lot of the triumph elements that represented T'challa in the score are gone. I love both soundtracks. Maybe the first one more but Wakanda Forever the movie is a perfect film. I enjoy it better than the first film.
Not to mention the siren song, probably the most bone chilling tune in the entire MCU sound library.
I can't wait until Ludwig shifts his interests in India historic music

Shuri's synth theme, the eerie 'Sirens' suite, 'Yibambe' and 'Namor's throne' was my absolute favs. All his themes told the story in its own ways. I already added them to my playlist. Ludwig is slowly becoming one of my all time fav composers!
"Árboles Bajo El Mar" was hands down the most memorable/impactful for me.
I would consider him a legend already. He's done music for Black Panther, Creed, The Mandolorian, Turning Red to name a few (we wont talk about all the works he's done with Childish Gambino) and he's done all this by age 38. Most major composers dont get credentials like this until their mid-late 40's.
He definitely feels like the successor to Hans zimmer as the most sought after composer once Hans decides to stop. I can’t think of anyone else working today on their level.
@@alrightalrightalright972 I only see John Powell (How to train your dragon serie + Kung Fu Panda serie (as co-composer with Hans)) at that level and I will look closely to Natalie Holt work since Loki.
And in a different style I will follow Hildur Guðnadóttir work to (Joker, Chernobyl).

Ryan is definitely introverted. It’s like words are too much for him cause he would rather be silent in his creativity. Trait of a genius right there. This makes me appreciate why his films are so good 😊
I love hearing Ryan Coogler speak. There aren't many famous black people from the bay area, just makes me feel like i'm home lol

And now Oppenheimer too!!! The tension and depth of sound he built in that film were both absurd. He's an actual musical genius, and maybe (more simply) just a Genius in general.
"A Beautiful Mind" is a phrase/title that seems pretty fitting for Luwig Göransson.
We need an episode of deconstruction for the song “Con La Brisa” that song is phenomenal & it definitely fit the scene & ambiance during that part of the movie

Burns Boy’s song ‘Alone’, Stormy’s ‘Interlude’ were extreme highlights for me. Those songs bought tears to my ears when I heard it in the cinema. Raw emotions of loss and love literally surged through me. The team on BP 2 outlet did themselves, truly.

Ryan and Ludwig are such talented artists. The respect they have to all the cultures that are portrayed in the films are just one of the reasons their work will remain.
Ludwig is a legend. Ryan is a genius. The BP score is one of the best scores I've ever heard. Nothing compares in my opinion.
it’s wild seeing Ludwig’s progression as an artist. those early Childish Gambino tapes were my first intro into Ludwig just as a producer. then realizing that he also did film and tv scores, i kept following his work. now he’s pretty much the John Williams of our generation. it’s nuts that this dude did Childish Gambino projects, New Girl, Marvel and Star Wars. that’s a huge breadth of work with so many differing thematic changes.
Ludwig is a true artist. no wonder he’s paired with another genius like Coogler. Wakanda Forever was very well made and easily the best of Phase 4 Marvel.
I do wish for another Donald Glover collab with Ludwig though: movie, show, album- anything! lol
I'd say even being a bridge of John and Hans Zimmer as well, which is just amazing to say from me! Having a hand with the composition and the production side of things does make him quite an artist to say.
The sound engineering through out the entire movie was something ive never experienced in being a 40 year old adult. Especially the depth of the scenes with Namor. Or when the Queen was in danger. Honestly, my younger self who was curious came back to me to celebrate the excitement from just hearing the sound.
Out of all the MCU movies, Black Panther Universe has the greatest soundtracks that really lift the movie up. The stylistic choices behind the sounds, artists greatly contributed in making these two movies amazing

Ryan and Ludwig show us what true artistry is and can be when you truly respect and love what you’re doing in the process and production of art.That care to detail sets them apart from most filmmakers and film scorers.

Inframundo made me cry. You can feel the emotions being expressed through the song. I loved Yucatán and other songs in Spanish and involving the Mayan language. Made me want to explore more on who were my ancestors and the history of my parents who are Mexican.
Con La Brisa is definitely the best song on the album! Amazing amazing & the way it played with the underwater scene was outstanding! Lift Me Up is also up there ❤️👏🏼
Would be dope if Genius did this for more film scores like Johnny Greenwood, Hans Zimmer, Nicholas Brittell etc
Imo a big part of why this format works here is the longtime friendship between director and composer, not always a brilliant composer will work with a director they can casually bounce off like this.

This dude went above and beyond the first movie with Wakanda Forever. The greatest MCU score alongside Loki.(And best looking imo, both shot by Autumn Durald Arkpaw).
So glad they devoted so much care and respect to the music of Wakanda and Talokan, from Maya Rappers like Pat Boy etc to Nigerian artists like Burna Boy ❤
The music in this film, ( both the score and soundtrack) where Bette than the first scene. Shuri being revealed as the new black panther and the talokan scenes are both 10/10

I love the sounds used in ‘coming back for you’, when I heard it in the film it was such a comforting song to hear

Most of them do. Henry Jackman's scores are amazing, Giacchino is good too (Dr. Strange theme is my favourite from him)... and Göransson's are the most creative and eclectic

wakanda forever and dune are the movies that i believe have the most outstanding sound deisgn, soundtracks and scores of all time. thank you so much ludwig, your sound and music truly made the film feel complete and took it to a whole other level. it truly wouldnt be the same without all of your amazing work:) big respect
