Unique army flavours will be affecting how I play as much as warlord personalities and starting positions, and I feel could be some of the real defining features of Records mode.
Adding Zhang Xiu or Zhang Ji as Zhang Xiu with the help of his strategist Jia Xu managed to defeat Cao Cao many times while fighting against Cao Cao overwhelming odds and Jia Xu is seen by many scholars in China as the most talented strategist of the era.
@Matheus Kawata That is why I mentioned Zhang Ji here as they could start without any province like Liu Bei and as he was serving Dong Zhuo at that point (like Ma Teng does in TW3K start) it would be easy to justify him like that as he was a major force after fall of Dong Zhuo. Force would start as Zhang Ji, Zhang Xiu, Jia xu and Huche'er. Vassal army under Dong Zhuo and they could either aim to support dong, overthrow him or find their own path. As the cavarly under Zhang Ji and Zhang Xiu was extremely strong( like xilliang cavarly usually) their starting would be unique and would debend on Diao Chan event in romance mode.
@Matheus Kawata I think it would be interesting and as Zhang Xiu was one of major warlords during the conflict withing the central plains era which with this start date would be the main stage of the campaign. So adding Zhang Ji as a force would serve the main campaign and would offer unique starting position also ould also add a scripted event which makes Zhang Xiu the leader like the marriage to Diao Chan event. They it would be hard to make this succeed but would offer new sides to start as most oppose Dong Zhuo and only Ma Teng is at his side so most likely AI V AI dong would die in a long run but adding allies to him would give you a possibility to see huge final war Dong against the player.
The day after this video was posted CA revealed the Yellow Turban starting locations in their Dong Zhuo stream. You can see them here: www.reddit.com/r/totalwar/comments/ayin78/yellow_turban_rebellion_starting_positions/
This is very cool, CA def put in the work in history/lore to give each faction unique traits that relate to these historical/fictional characters. It would be even cooler if they added negative traits to these faction leaders based on their flaws.
Zheng Jiang appears to be the anti-Liu Bei. On the one hand both start off as wandering armies with no territory. Both are essentially underdogs at the start of the campaign and are fighting for the people in their own ways. However while Liu Bei's playstyle is about maintaining his reputation through virtuous deeds and honor, Zheng Jiang thrives on gaining infamy which I suppose involves burning and looting and murdering indiscriminately as well as using coercion. Also their agendas are completely in contrast to one another. Where Liu Bei is loyal to the Han and is fighting to preserve and restore the Han, Zheng Jiang's paramount goal is to destroy the Han, burn it down to ashes. Then there's the fact that Liu Bei is a virtuous man who upholds tradition whereas Zheng Jiang is a female bandit leader who intends on breaking down tradition and even making it so her descendants will have her name instead of their father's. If these two warlords ever get into each other's faces, I bet their diplomatic meter would be at the lowest of lows.
I am, I think im just holding on faith that Rockstar will or already has seen the potential that is RDR2 online and how much fun it could be. The campaign was great though I enjoyed that very much.
Kong Rong looks exciting and it's kind of ironic since he's a more peaceful man but taking control of a strategist as a faction leader is cool and you get access to all the formations at the start.
Kong Rong's campaign is one I'm the most excited about. You can play him nearly entirely peaceful. Manipulating trade relations and allying yourself with bigger lords to reach your goals.
Likely I'll start with Liu Bei or Ma Teng. I'd think they'll add in Liu Zhang. It may be interesting if they eventually add in something like a Nanman campaign.
Haung Shao appeals to me the most so far, but it is also probably very difficult. Of those you mentioned Zhang Yan seems fun. I like Gongsun Zans Cavalry Archer bonus a lot though. Someday I’d like to play as Sun Ce. Always found him cool.
On the one hand, no Liu Yan in Yi Province is a travesty. On the other hand, the fact they actually included Zhang Yan of the Black Mountains impresses me. At the same time though, he's sharing basically the same starting spot as the baseless Zheng Jiang.
Will there be more playable southern warlords or non-Chinese factions playable as DLC like the Xiongnu/Rouran/Koreans/Vietnamese/Tibetans down the line?
There aren't that many notable southern warlords at that time. Barbarian King Meng Huo didn't take a stance like 30 years after the start time of this campaign. Wang Lang and other southern officials loyal to Han mostly went to serve Cao Cao after Sun Ce conquered south. And the worst thing about southern warlords is they didn't have many notable generals. Liu Zhang had a few including ZhangRen LengBao, and LiuYao had TaishiCi, and that's it. I'm 99% sure MengHuo will be added in dlc in the future, like in Late three kingdoms pack.
The Xianbei war leader whose name I can't remember (Ken-beng?) would be an interesting addition, since he was certainly pretty active in this period. The Wuhuan would be another northern steppe group that could appear, as they fought Cao Cao (and lost) in a battle that made him rather famous.
In the in-game map, Korea's landmass has already been created. It merely lacks commanderies and factions. It is the most obvious choice for possible future expansions
Yellow Turbans themselves would make a nice DLC, along the lines of an alternative history with Zhang Jiao having a more stable grip on his followers. Zhang Xiu would be alright, most of the leaders coming to mind are going to need different scenarios for them to come about.
will likelt see Zhang Lu and Tao Qian as DLC both very influential in this time frame, maybe Ji Ling or some of the warlords around the area that sun ce united into wu in the south east Lu gong etc
Has anyone tried marching directly to the Capital with Liu Bei's starting army? Has anyone succeeded at taking the Capital with a maxed out starting Liu Bei stack since he can't build more armies until he takes a territory to run?
Meng Hou should be next. Use of elephants, fire arrows, tigers and bull charges, but his faction would have a lack in armor and melee defense. Also give his wife some sorta fire based weapon to reference her link to the fire god.
@Cody Bonds, There's actually 3 spelling errors under Sun Jian you wrote SATISFATION not Satisfaction and under Dong Zhou you wrote RESROUCE and TEROR lol Great Video though, looks beautiful and very informative, although I would have loved to have seen small gameplay examples of each ability as you were discussing them.
I know with one of the pre order DLC you can get to play as the yellow turbins themselves so what about the ring leader of the yellow turbins themselves? they have as much chance to unite china as anyone else can.
By 190ad, TW:TK start date, the yellow turbans were mere remnants. The brothers were dead and we mainly have partly-unknowns as the 3 warlords of the yellow turbans. Iirc all of them are based in the north
This is well made! What dlc eras do y'all see in the future? Like how Attila had age of Charlemagne, and s2tw had genpei war and FOS, what time period dlc do you guys see for tw3k? I see warring states or chu han contention. Maybe Song Dynasty vs Tang Dynasty and bring back the mechanic where a horde arrives I.E. the mongols.
I would play as the first warlord first, just because his capital is based in the capital of my province, Changsha. The scholar official to the north is also very intriguing, along with several others. I definitely want to play as Liu Bei eventually, too, because he was the undisputable hero of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms (even if some people prefer other more pragmatic options). Anyway, looks good! Love the detail and work that's gone into this to translate every major personality trait into real life consequences which have concrete effects on game play! I love it!
if i have a chance to buy the game cao cao is the first character i would play then Liu Biao with Dongzhou as third. one prominent warlord that i think will be added in the future or in this case DLC will be Liu Zhang with campaign involving Liu Bei. For those who know Is there any confirmation of alternate start date? i mean i would like to have alternate start like Guandu, Chibi, three kingdom, Shu attack on hanzhong etc.
I'll be playing Cao Cao since he's probably the easiest to win the campaign with. Then I can play Dong Zhuo's campaign, the one campaign I really wanted to play.
liu bei gets 0 upkeep on militia, its the oda clan all over again, unless there is limit on the amount of militia recruitable then liu bei is gonna be op as hell
@Thelondonbadger town guard cost 100/ turn at least when outside a town, not really comparable, its more like the mongols in med 2 who get units with zero upkeep and the mongols were damn op
Yuan Shao was depicted in the novel as an unstable leader he could be smart in better days but most of the time only act when he has an overwhelming advantage and even with that he hesitates a lot and ignores advisor's opinion from time to time. He is also depicted as an idiot who has a good family name. Cao Cao always thinks Yuan Shao as a fool and arrogant with no far-sight. Yuan Shao didn't try to rescue the Emperor even when he was so close to the Emperor's location while Cao Cao was riding with his cavalry day and night so he could get the Emperor before anyone else. The Emperor was the symbol of a rightful ruler. With the Emperor on his side Cao Cao can say whatever he wants through the Emperor. Yuan Shao regreted it and he must go to war with Chao Chao for dominance. Most of the smart characters (including Yuan Shao's advisor) in the novel held the same opinion that: "While Han dynasty is crumbling it is still here why no one gives a shit about the Emperor?" This chapter highlights why Chao Chao is smarter than everyone else.
Acting only when you have a massive advantage is one of the main precepts of the Sun Tzu. Winning the battle before it starts. And Wei got outplayed by the Jin in the end. That said Cao Cao was by far one of the best warlords they had.
@@TheBayzent Sun Tzu's Art of War is meant to be used as a whole not single out one rule and act on it. You are supposed to combine every rule when making a decision. "A massive advantage" could mean a number of things from troops number to logistic or enemy's intel. And Yes, win before the battle begins. But Millennium Challenge 2002 gave us great insight war is chaotic and messy, planning may not reflect the outcome of the battle. Anyway, there is no way to tell what the people were actually thinking when they made a decision since the novel is about 70% facts and 30% fiction. The war did happen and the people were real but the details and what they spoke are not recorded in full. By the time Wei replaced by Jin, Cao Cao had been dead for quite some time and actually, he was well aware of the threat the Sima family posed that's why he makes sure his son, Cao Pi, sees the threat and keep a short leash on them. Then he died and forgot to leave some tips for his son.
Do you think they will put in different timeline to begin the campaign as dlc? Like maybe the actual three Kingdom or like when lubu seize puyang from cao cao or xu province from liu bei and have more legendary lord?
King Meng Huo, although it might end up being a meme lol. I'm not sure if Lui Zhang should be added in the game as a warlord, since he stayed there the entire time in Shu and had no mind for conquest.

Liu Bei is the good guy of the romanticized version of the Saga of the Three Kingdoms and I'm sure it's clear why he would be. Not sure how it'll work in the game, but he eventually leads the 5 Legendary Tiger Generals.

I believe they only added her to appease SJWs. There's no other point in taking someone from 1 single line of the records which most people don't even prefer to read.
All the better if I can subjugate her faction and make her a wife.
@@RexGalilae even if that's the case... What's the problem with that?
@@Newovar there are others more significant female characters and possibly warlords that should have been there instead of this bandit
Holy shit dude this video quality is insane. Great work man, keep it up.
Man I wish the game was Release March 7th but I understand C.A. need to fix some bugs.
Feels like an official CA release - well done!
Thanks for the breakdown on the warlords, best part of the game getting delayed is more videos!
I'm really curious about unique units for each faction now, and if they're tied to the faction or the region.
I really like the Cao Cao farm garrison bonus, as soldier farming colonies were one of the linchpins of his success historically!
He learned his lesson about being short on supplies. It plagued his army for his entire career.
Did you say "NO UPKEEP"? Oda i meant Liu Bei is my favorite instantly
Man this was expertly made. Gratz.
Sun Jian. Kong Rong. Liu Bei. Gongsun Zan. Cao Cao. Dong Zhou.
In that order. The rest will be after but I plan to play them all.
Interesting, we get to play the “pear giver” Kong Rong?
Heyyyy whats up Cody!!! Nice video my man as always!!! Cant wait to jump into this and take a break from Warhammer 2 and RDR2.
Are you still playing Red Dead? I put 80 hours into it and still don't know how I feel. So much to love. So much to hate.
Love my Ma Teng campaign thus far. Tough and brutal campaign once I decided to turn on Dong Min. Lu Bu is the worst enemy who abandoned the capitol.
I greatly appreciate that your pronunciation has improved.
Would it surprise you to find out I nearly failed basic Spanish? Languages have never been my strong suit.
Zheng Jiang sounds right up my alley for a playthrough on Legendary. Can't wait!
This was... very good. Great job
Cant wait to play this game in 2 years with a 50 percent discount and all of the dlc
I feel you. Patient gaming goes a long way with the wallet. I started making these videos so my wife wouldn't complain when I bought Total War games.
@@codybonds not only just that, I hate feeling like I am buying an incomplete game
I wish they still offered Gold Editions. Just bundle it all together after two years.
Get a better job, the game is cheap for how extensive it is. 60 dollars, 45 quid, 60 euros is nothing.
G2A
Will there be more playable southern warlords or non-Chinese factions playable as DLC like the Xiongnu/Rouran/Koreans/Vietnamese/Tibetans down the line?
would require a much larger map, which im all for. or theres always mods lol
Ke Bening?
You know Im really happy with this man gonna go grind for that dong. But man do i wish for shogun 3
I'll upvote anyone who's willing to admit they'll grind for Dong.
Nice video mate :) I love it! Better than what CA shows us.
This was really well done
Thanks!
So cool and diverse mechanics, cant wait!!
Yellow Turbans themselves would make a nice DLC, along the lines of an alternative history with Zhang Jiao having a more stable grip on his followers.
Zhang Xiu would be alright, most of the leaders coming to mind are going to need different scenarios for them to come about.
The Yellow Turbans are day one dlc.
Yellow Turban characters already exsist as day one DLC. If you mean a scenario before this one. Dont know if they would do Yellow turbans twice.
will likelt see Zhang Lu and Tao Qian as DLC both very influential in this time frame, maybe Ji Ling or some of the warlords around the area that sun ce united into wu in the south east Lu gong etc
I’m gonna play as Cao cao I just can’t get over the Julius Caesar vibe I get from him
He Jin or Zhang Jiao and Sima Yi as another DLC warlords
Imagine playing 3K and not starting out as Sun Jian
Has anyone tried marching directly to the Capital with Liu Bei's starting army? Has anyone succeeded at taking the Capital with a maxed out starting Liu Bei stack since he can't build more armies until he takes a territory to run?
Liu Bei, the Shu Faction always first. Best characters, best guy to root for, etc.
Meng Hou should be next. Use of elephants, fire arrows, tigers and bull charges, but his faction would have a lack in armor and melee defense. Also give his wife some sorta fire based weapon to reference her link to the fire god.
Did you say tiger and bull charges?
@Cody Bonds, There's actually 3 spelling errors under Sun Jian you wrote SATISFATION not Satisfaction and under Dong Zhou you wrote RESROUCE and TEROR lol Great Video though, looks beautiful and very informative, although I would have loved to have seen small gameplay examples of each ability as you were discussing them.
I would love to have provided the examples (and hopefully will be able to soon) but they aren't yet available to the public.
Finally someone who pronounces Dong Zhuo's name right!
It's interesting that they have not said or revealed anything about them.
My bet is on Warring States and Mongol Invasion.
watching the TV series right now, desperately trying to get a mental map of where the heck things are happening
Good luck. So much traveling. The individual warlord legends videos on my channel do a better job of telling their stories and might be useful to you.
wishing it is out now.
I love it!
Who would Guan Yu be under?
@@dubuyajay9964 you tell me.
@@zhouwu I dunno. That's why I was asking you. :(
@@dubuyajay9964 I think he's a sworn brother of Liu Bei. But you'll have to double check me on that one. Just Google it.
He and Zhang Fei both start under Liu Bei.
is he jin only playable during yellow turban rebellion?
if i have a chance to buy the game cao cao is the first character i would play then Liu Biao with Dongzhou as third. one prominent warlord that i think will be added in the future or in this case DLC will be Liu Zhang with campaign involving Liu Bei.
For those who know Is there any confirmation of alternate start date? i mean i would like to have alternate start like Guandu, Chibi, three kingdom, Shu attack on hanzhong etc.
Gonna guess a dlc campaign or something
I'll be playing Cao Cao since he's probably the easiest to win the campaign with.
Then I can play Dong Zhuo's campaign, the one campaign I really wanted to play.
Expand Dong.
Amazing video keep up the great work!!!
I thought this game only had three factions but I was wrong. Who knows this might turn out to be a really good game
TheGameLab /gaming there should be around 10 more if you read the actual history. A lot of the blank states on the map should be a warlord.
Zhao Shuning those empty spaces do have warlords I’d assume, just ones not playable until dlc comes out for it
Can't wait to play it, damn...!
Even thought it wouldent be historically accurate I would love to see Japan and the Mongols for some unit variety.
There's strong hints Genghis Khan will be the follow up
I expect there to be more playable factions added in the SW and SE parts of the map at least because right now they're rather empty of that
liu bei gets 0 upkeep on militia, its the oda clan all over again, unless there is limit on the amount of militia recruitable then liu bei is gonna be op as hell
@Thelondonbadger town guard cost 100/ turn at least when outside a town, not really comparable, its more like the mongols in med 2 who get units with zero upkeep and the mongols were damn op
This game is going to be immersive.
Saving the Emperor was the one move that changed Cao Cao's life the most
Acting only when you have a massive advantage is one of the main precepts of the Sun Tzu.
B-but where is the guy who's the tyrant's friend? Does he get a place?
The red katana guy from the trailer
Do you think they will put in different timeline to begin the campaign as dlc? Like maybe the actual three Kingdom or like when lubu seize puyang from cao cao or xu province from liu bei and have more legendary lord?
King Meng Huo, although it might end up being a meme lol. I'm not sure if Lui Zhang should be added in the game as a warlord, since he stayed there the entire time in Shu and had no mind for conquest.
Excellent video by the way
Well, SOMEONE has to keep the shu territory healthy until liu bei comes
Hello, excellent vid!
Is it possible for you to share an HQ image version of that map (without the factions, just the map and name of commandaries)?
Please and thanks!
It's only a blank map. No commandery names.
Cody Bonds That would be fine by me. Would you mind sharing?
Why does it sound like you get way more quiet once you start on the outlaws???
Dunno. Bad sound leveling probably.
Gongsun Zan ...."The Iron Fish General" ...lol
I know this is unreasonable, but if only this game was 3 players ;-;. I love total war and even more so the story of the three kingdoms. The idea of having 3 players rule the 3 main kingdoms is so suitable for this game. AHHHHH
Total War needs to overhaul it's multiplayer campaigns badly. You're not alone in wanting this. The key is allowing simultaneous turns again.
damn, subbed instantly!
Another great video, with a great preview of the game. Any chance you will try a campaign out when it is released?
I hope to. The let's plays I post on here actually tend to lose me subscribers. I'm trying to figure out a way of doing them live to see if that helps.
@@codybonds - I thought they were great. Why do they lose you subscribers? I don't understand it. Actually, I found it strange that you did not have more views on those replays.
What about the Yellow Turban Rebellion which are really interesting and area UNFORTUNATELY day one dlc?
I linked a Reddit article in a comment that has them. CA revealed their location in the Dong Zhuo stream yesterday.

Yuan Shu and Yuan Shao are half-brothers not cousins. 😁
I really hope the Chinese translation in the game can be as satisfying as Everything this game have now.
Dollars to donuts that the Nanman will be DLC faction.
Orale.
Liu Bei is the good guy of the romanticized version of the Saga of the Three Kingdoms and I'm sure it's clear why he would be. Not sure how it'll work in the game, but he eventually leads the 5 Legendary Tiger Generals.
Dilemma's probably since the promotional art already shows the Oath of the Peach Garden, it isn't unlikely that there are similar events to get Ma Cao and Zhao Yun.
@@TheBayzent Should be a fun game with epic sized battles regardless of which faction you decide to play as.
