Just found this review, and as a result your channel. Fantastic review. I think you nailed it. There is no happy ending in circumstances like this. There is hardly ever any closure. This indulgence into despair feeds on its victims like an addiction… like gambling. Kelly-Anne was compelled to feed this high and sacrificed everything to get it. She had already lost her career and physical security, and went further still on that one bet. I think she said something about the emotion of poker players and how it is weakness. Those hands of poker were the only time we ever really saw her vulnerable.
It's in my top 3 of the year for sure, such a great movie full of incredibly subtle performances. The way it deals with violence (never actually showing it) is so smart
Just watched your review and couldn’t agree more with all that you said! Thought the Soderbergh comparison you made was so on point, I hadn’t even thought about that.
Seen a lot of great stuff this year so in no particular order: The Beast, Janet Planet, I Saw the TV Glow, Kinds of Kindness, La Chimera, Daughters, Close Your Eyes, Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World, Here (Bas Devos), and Samsara
