  • RAFI produced this film to illustrate the challenges contract farmers face. For more information about RAFI and to learn about our services for small- to mid-scale farmers in the Southeast U.S. and U.S. Caribbean, visit RAFIUSA.ORG.
    For the first time in a full-length documentary, contract farmers tell their stories and industry experts reveal how the corporate production model pits farmer against farmer. Under Contract: Farmers and the Fine Print takes viewers across the American South and to Southern India to understand what’s happening to farmers living under contract and what we can do to change our food system for the better.
    The story of the contract farmer is the story of what’s changing in rural America. Power in agriculture is changing hands, but few people know what’s happening to the farmers producing our food. Under Contract tells this story through the lens of global poultry farming. Around the world and all across agriculture, contract farming is taking hold. But farmers who sign contracts often face unfair challenges and hidden risks under the terms that are offered by the giant “integrator” meatpacking corporations that control the industry. Under Contract provides a timely glimpse into the little-understood fine print of modern agriculture.

    The life of a Farmer is no different any where in the whole wide world, I see this in India and am seeing it in the US. As son of a farmer am proud of the hardworking farmers and am sad to see farmers being cheated.

      I've seen the reports of suicides of rural farmers in India. Theres elevated rates of suicide in US, especially after a farmer finds that US corporations contaminated their soil with industrial pollutants and rendered the farm worthless.

      Donald no longer cares about reelection.
      He got his get-out-of-jail card.
      Now he panders to the Billionaires of the world and those who wish to become Billionaires.
      Donald already broke his lower grocery prices promise.
      This means he won't do anything about lowering the price of eggs, or the poultry industry.
      Poultry, pork, beef, it's all gamed already against the single farmer.

    I worked at a Tyson processing plant in White Hall, Arkansas and OMG how that place managed to run was beyond me...the pipes in debone stayed clogged and they would kill more chickens than they could debone and process. Whole chickens would be ran through evis (Gutted) and through the chiller and ran into big tubs and placed into refrigeratorated trailers for days until they had to run them...let me tell you folks... working at that place was a total nightmare... I've worked at a processing plant before and it was 1000X's better than that Tyson plant. Thank God I found another job, because I just couldn't deal with what they were selling to people to eat.

    15:30 Wow, they showed the farmers the cash flow statement but conveniently left out operating expenses and liabilities. They flaunted the revenue but skipped over profit after operating costs-just shameless. It’s honestly so sad. I’m so grateful I support local small farms and don’t contribute to these massive, exploitative corporations. I can’t wait for the day their greed finally catches up with them.

    Nobody holds a gun to their head to sign that contract. They can start their own slaughter house and do from the start to finish farming . I got three different farmers I get meat and vegetables from. One for pork another for beef and the row crop farm. This is up to the farmers to setup and manage themselves.

    I feel very sorry for the farmers shown in this video and for all farmers going thru the same struggles. I'm a 20 year already American who is an emigrant and lives a very good life and came with little to nothing to this country. I need to share a short story... My landscaper is an emigrant from Vietnam, who came to this country with literally nothing... Today I can afford a landscaper, own a home in 98008, travel the world in style. My landscaper owns a 1m+ home close to the Seattle/Tacoma airport, worth 1m+ and travels every year for a month to his home country to visit family and friends. While I was (retired recently before 60) in high tech, my landscaper was not and his entire business investment is a very solid, but used truck, a few mowers, blowers and trimmers and a huge desire to live the American dream. In this video people speak about "losing their home", but as far as I can tell those homes are worth little to nothing and not worth keeping. I would never ever put my women thru tears as seen in this video... My advice is: Leave this shitty life behind and start over in a place where your skills are in demand and be willing to add to your current skills; this is what people of this planet do, when they don't brake even.
    I wish all of them only the best!

    Farmers need to unite under one umbrella like a Co-Op and demand to be payed in shares/cash instead of cash alone.That way they will have voteing rights in the company. They will own the company instead of the company owning them.Every farmer should own shares, and when votes are casted, it will be proportional to the shares owned.Or they can simply band together and create a new company under a CO-OP where the farmers are the owners, to compete with tyson, perdue etc.The farmers are the labour they will win.

      I agree with this after watching these deplorable testimonials from good folks being pounded by these companies who obviously don't care about the farmer. So, I propose they do it all. If they cant pay more than 5cents a pound they maybe they need to handle it all. Farmers need to unit and stand down collectively. What's Tysons gonna possibly do when 1200+ farmers don't accept any more chicks by us? I'll tell you. They'll buckle and it's time for unions to move in and take these contracts more beneficial for all parties. Americans need to get some sense and stop trying to get rich easy and stop ignorantly signing these bullvorn contracts with greedy corporations. If they started me at 21k a batch and dropped it to 12k I wouldn't have accepted anymore chicks until they straightened there act up. Sounds like Tysons needs to be run out of town and a new fresh business come up in the ranks and give back to the farmers. It's time to rise up before corporations take our lands over! The lands that belong to the people.

Rewrite their contracts so the total cost of the industry can be shared among several years of production. No more hungry Chinese and happy farmers..

    I’m sorry but this is why city people think country folks are dumb. Going to mortgage your entire life waaaaaay beyond your ability to pay for it, for a shady contract written to benefit the corporation and give you absolutely no leverage or say in what you do. Then you’re going to be upset when it doesn’t go your way. 🤔🙄
    The farmer needs to be the producer and the retailer. Cut out the middleman altogether and take back control of your lives, your future, and the safety of our food systems! Unfortunately it’s too late for the folks in this video unless they want to go through bankruptcy and have to completely start over.

    • @sommbre
      @sommbre 3 года назад +11

      Did you not watch the documentary, or somehow entirely miss that the contracts are intentionally misleading? How can this be an individual failure when such a high percentage of actual (working) farmers are in debt... This is a systematic and intentional abuse of working people, people who believe in the same things you seem to believe in -- rugged individualism and hard work. It's an abuse by those in positions of power, not a moral or intellectual failing.

    • @sommbre
      @sommbre 3 года назад

      ruclips.net/video/yS5GJYlHkp4/видео.html I think your recommendation is to be like this farm, which is also struggling because the consumer costs are artificially low. That clip shows it's not the individual working farmer's fault that our food system is fragile and only profitable to corporations. We need to shift focus to fixing those systems that make it impossible to survive as an independent -- or even contract -- farmer. It's not unreasonable to think that contracts should benefit both parties, promoting efficiency and cooperation.
