Almost made me sell my EP-1320 and keep my KO2.. but there's a charm to it. It's just such a fun looking and sounding little gimmick that I think I'm gonna keep for fun. It's so much less practical than my KO2 but... it's certainly a great addition to my quirky instrument collection and a fun conversation piece :)
The dimensionality effects and multisamples on the 1320, as well as the crazy darkness in the effects, actually has me really excited for it. I was frankly sold on the aesthetic and included sounds, but this pushed me from convinced to enthusiastic. Maybe I'll pick up a KO2 if this workflow really does it for me. Great job!!
The delay on the 1320 is a diffused delay. Diffused delays have various implementations but usually they're comprised of successive "fuzzy taps" where each tap is a short reverb
It sounds like they added low quality reverb to delay, not lowpass filter. Strange decision tbh. Thanks for comparison. I was sure they only added different sample pack. Didn’t know they changed effects
it sounds like the dungeon echo has reverb added in -- pretty cool. all the tracks i've heard people make with this have a vaguely Burial vibe. i think this is a great little toy that will be useful for making some fun & spooky Halloween tracks. it's super gothy and weird. not a serious instrument for making complete tracks but instead an interesting thing to keep nearby to entertain yourself with. i like it.
i think the KO ii is probably better for regular beat making and stuff but if i had the cash to buy one i would honestly pick the 1320 Medieval, cause i feel like the weirdness of it would be more inspiring to me
I agree. to me, the KO ii is too generic and I might as well buy a better suited sampler for the price. the 1320 is truly unique and still very much useable which is the best thing I could hope for for $300
The lack of visual representation, for effects and other parameters, on the EP-1320 is such a dealbreaker. I’ve been using it for four days and this keeps giving me issues. I’d recommend going for the KO ii.
this is so frustrating because, other than this, it feels like a product made specifically for me. i was so excited to see it get used but the fact that you get zero visual feedback on really pertinent parameters is as you said just such a deal breaker.
it's been so annoying. I love the whole vibe of my EP-1320 but it is sooo impractical for finetuning because of that lack of visual representation. it's impossible to know what parameters are set to. I really hope it gets added in some shape or form in a firmware update.

Great video, can’t believe the Medieval does not have visual feedback. I was gonna sell my KO 2 u til I figured out I could dump all the samples from my other Pocket operators (sub mega man factory) in to it and have a all in one POcket Operator. Now I love it.
Why would they so obviously have better effects on the KO 2. If they already had those effects why not just put them on the 1320 as well. Can they still fix this with an update?
20:20 simple, multi note beat repeat is amazing (in the KO2). the LACK of arpeggiator is what made the KO2 better than every other note repeat synth or sequencer.
some of the built in sounds are multisamples which you just don't have the option of on KO2, echo is much more dubby on the 1320 which actually can work well with the punch in 9.. but yeah hopefully they port the arp over to the KO as it is a great way to make some drum fills and such. Hopefully they also open up user multisamples.
True, forgot about the multisamples when recording…but unless they open them up for user samples they aren't of much interest to me personally. I really hope they will update the EP-133 with some of these improvements.
Great comparison! Thanks. Own both of them. I think the "best" one is the one you play most with. KO2 already looks & sounds great but the Medieval is such an unexpected beautiful sampler/beatmachine it puts an even bigger smile on my face. The fact that there's less space doesn't bother me. Maybe makes me even more creative and I really like the sound of sped samples pitched down 1 or 2 octaves (on both devices btw). I wonder why they don't upgrade the same/ or more fx for both units (or give more options with the Shift-System-Numbers shortcuts). I also wanna have that ARP on my KO2 (without having to sync them with eachother). Since Medieval is most recent, most "weird" and suits my character, I go for the Medieval. But if TE makes a metal chassis vintage late 80s early 90s type sampler with ZX Spectrum Sinclair type buttons I probably go for that one :)
Son Wu, ON POINT with this comparison! I think this might be the best comparison video for any two products I’ve ever seen. Neither one was on my radar, until I started hearing the sounds in the medieval, which is right up my alley. On the other hand, the features of the KO-II are far more useful to me. Teenage Engineering FTW though, because now I’m going to buy the KO-II, which I wasn’t even interested in before, and I’ll wait til the fomo-fools start selling off their EP-1320s and get the sounds for less.
Never had a sampler. Got the medieval. In a day I’ve gotten half of my city pop vinyl beats in it and am mixing with their medieval “cymbals” and its an absolute blast. Specially running their samples through an eurorack for processing its simple awesome.
Been waiting for my local stockist to get the Medieval, but think I'll stick with my ko2. Appreciate the comparison . Hopefully we'll see more variants in future.
Thank you: You just confirm what I already think: the EP-133 it really better then the Medieval that for me its just a justification to try to win money with the same object but with different outlook.
I bought the 1320 minutes after the release. Perfect Circuit labeled it as 'Limited', so I figured they would sellout fast. Due to me thinking it would sellout fast, I bought it before I looked at the specs, because I generally trust TE. When I received it, I realized that it wasn't that limited, and it wasn't as good as the KOII that I already owned, so I didn't even open it, and I sent it back to Perfect Circuit. In my opinion, it's probably the worst piece of gear that TE ever released. If they didn't make the samples permanent, then I probably would have kept it. Most of the samples that I've heard, were sounds that I would never use. If they wanted to make an EP with permanent sounds, they shouldn't make it so niche. It would be cool if they sampled a bunch of rare gear, and made the sounds permanent, along with some sample memory. Like old rare drum machines and synths, or even generally usable acoustic instruments. There's a million things they could have done, that would have been better than the 1320. The person at TE that came up with the idea for the 1320, must have had some pull, because it wasn't a good idea. There had to be people at TE thinking that the 1320 was a bad idea, but I'm guessing the person that came up with it, was too high up, so nobody wanted to be honest about it.
The zero punch in effect is amazing. It chooses different samples on both, so your results will vary based on the order you load the samples in. I use it constantly, maybe it just synergizes with my sample load list a little better through chance
I love the experimental boldness of the medieval and the multi-sampled brass for example, but the printed text is less readable, the screen is duller, the non-erasable sounds are not to my taste. Also where's the update for the second core of the KO2?
How about fader knob functionality. I bought one with a broken fader and never look at Teenage engineering ever again especially after the company failed to address issue.
thank you for putting this mammoth task of a comparison together, very much appreciated. I have a KOii and really like it but i've also been looking at adding the Medieval... you have given me a much better understanding of it.. that's incredibly helpful. I have the medieval samples in a few folders and will put a few on my KOii on the next track. One thing i did hear is that some of the medieval sounds are multi sampled across some octaves which is something you can't do in the user sample area on the KOii .... what about the use area on Medieval .. same edit tools or can you split samples over octaves?
Thanks for the reminder! I haven't completely checked the multi-samples, but from what I understand this is so far only applicable to the factory samples. Meaning, you select one of the factory sounds…put it in keys mode…and depending on which note you play, it will play a different sample. I don't know intricate these are…but if they added it to user samples in the KOII I'd be happy ;)
I'd go for the ko2 it looks better ..but all stick to the mpc and the circuit rhythm...iv got the o.g ko 33 and it's dope so might get a ko2 at some point just cause I love t.e gear

Fantastic video. But, I just can't get into the 1320. Just don't see a need for this. This is more of an expansion pack really. I would have bought it for the 133 if that were the case.

I am waiting for someone to hack the firmware so you can have all the functions… For me the KO falls short of being a killer production device.. usbc audio, resample and song mode keeps this device a toy… still.. it’s way more usable than a PO.
I think you might have missed the target on your comparison of these two samplers. I do appreciate the first 90% of the video comparing the similar features but the fact that the Midi Evil comes with 96MB of preloaded samples that you cannot remove and only 32MB of user sample area (compared to 64MB on the EP-133) is not only a moot point but also doesn't touch on the main difference between these two samplers. The Midi Evil has some of the most unique and interesting smaples related to a time period in the history of humanity that deserves a shout out, yet you barely touched on that. The other fact that is not important is that, yeah, the EP-133 has 64MB of user space and the Midi Evil has only 32MB. But there has literally NEVER been a limit on user space on any computer or device EVER in the history of computers because samples and data have always been and always will be able to be stored on external media. There has always been and always will be the ability to move data (and samples) from external media onto other media, in this case the EP samplers. Lack of user storage on the Midi Evil is NOT why the EP-133 is better. The 96MB of fantastic samples on the Midi Evil is why it is a possibly better/definately different sampler. Opinions and assholes.
My point is that all of these samples are available online…there is absolutely no need to buy the EP-1320 specifically for that. So you can just buy the KOII and put the samples on it that you really want, instead of having unnecessary space taken up by cows & chickens. Also you could sample other plugins that have these instruments.
I do not like the look of the new one. The super modern look of the device clashes with the Medieval graphics. It looks as if someone just put stickers on it. The extra memory and themed samples are nice though.
This is such a polarizing release. You either love the sounds…or hate them. I’m in the latter group as I am not a fan of old sounds from that time period. I hope TE has got this out of their system and will release the complete opposite next: a futuristic electro specific EP in the vain of Planet Rock sounds. Please TE 🙏🏼
Locking the stock samples is 🗑️ No visible representation for effects 🗑️ Only 32mb of sampling 🗑️ No sample organization like the ko2 🗑️ Canceled my B&H order. Thanks Son Wu.
I’m in shock, that TE has made a whole sampling device, that doesn’t update the sampling experience with resampling. The ‘new’ unit is just a new graphics theme and sound set revamp basically… I was expecting at least revisiting older units in this new form factor…. Like having a sub synth unit like the PO14 , or drum synth…. This business model of overconsumption in the form of rehashing the existing format is just bamboozlement …I’m sure individuals could customise the unit with sound sets and anime graphic design, but that’s just aesthetics… a lot if us want functional os updates, with the view to each iteration being a contrasting evolution of the series, not an aesthetic remix for “ teenagers “ 😅
@@SONWU 1320 ft is a quarter mile lol. I'm used to seeing that number used in racecar videos so I'm curious as to what context the number has on a medieval themed sampler
Yeah I snagged the samples off the med and pitched them up 2x and made them all mono so they fit right alongside my stock ep-133 sounds and I’m pretty satisfied. I’d like the arp though. I don’t really care about the demo songs, but resampling and a better song mode would make it damn near perfect.
I was almost tempted by the original, purely for the aesthetics. Looked like a prop from Alien or something. But I know I wouldn’t really use it in production and 300+ bucks isn’t small change. I just got Koala instead.
I already sold my ko2 and got a Roland SP404 MK2 instead and couldn't be more happier! These TE machines feel like overpriced toys and this new machine should have been a addon on the original.... but they focus way to much on the looks.
Which one? None of them! They just bring a new version, without fixing the old/known issues. For me it‘s not an option anymore. When it comes to the quality, it‘s a bad choice … sadly.
The next TE KO 2 series needs to actually be an EFFECTS PROCESSING unit, not relocating different parameters of an effect , stop all this repackaged medieval JEDI MARKETING MIND TRICKS.
I have to wonder whether they actually saved any money from making it 64MB versus even 256MB. I guess maybe there are still manufacturers making these kinds of small storage in bulk for stuff like smart fridges and whatever now that I think about it. But I think the 12 voice mono polyphony and no sample looping is a bigger problem

Both, always both, lol
I do not like the look of the new one. The super modern look of the device clashes with the Medieval graphics. It looks as if someone just put stickers on it. The extra memory and themed samples are nice though.
T.E. wants you to buy both, obviously
;)
Do they both have a defective slider?
cheeky ;)
thankfully seems to be fixed on the 1320
You forgot to mention the chocolate pads
I cut that part from the video.…the scent is so light, I decided it wasn't worth mentioning ;)
Are those real samplers? Are they drum machinesand sequencers?
they are real samplers/sequencers.
not synthesizers.
@@SONWU what's the sample time and memory?
This is such a polarizing release. You either love the sounds…or hate them. I’m in the latter group as I am not a fan of old sounds from that time period. I hope TE has got this out of their system and will release the complete opposite next: a futuristic electro specific EP in the vain of Planet Rock sounds. Please TE 🙏🏼
I'd prefer, if they just updated the KOII ;)
But more on that in the next video…
@@SONWUI’m 100% on board with that since I have the KOII already 🤞🏼
Can you just google these sounds and import it yourself and do the same things?
@@NetvoTV YES, you can :)
One is a gimmick; the other one is less of a gimmick.
Please get neither.
Both of these hooked together is so good.
👌
Think k.o.2 Sounds better for Me , thank U 🎉
My pleasure!
Neither has enough sample memory.
Just buy a digitakt 2 and have the best time
Hell yes, this is crapy shit 😂❤
Locking the stock samples is 🗑️
No visible representation for effects 🗑️
Only 32mb of sampling 🗑️
No sample organization like the ko2 🗑️
Canceled my B&H order. Thanks Son Wu.
Its soooo bad 😂❤❤❤
Both are good
Exactly my conclusion.
Yeah no they will just eat it up and the gear tube cycle continues. Its gross. I bought the ko2 and the whole thing is mind blowing and stupid.
Thank you. Someone finally said it. 🫡
Quarter mile?
?
@@SONWU 1320 ft is a quarter mile lol. I'm used to seeing that number used in racecar videos so I'm curious as to what context the number has on a medieval themed sampler
@@ravensharpless :D I see!
Midi Evil indeed!
why get a sound specific one when you could just sample it those sounds?
Yeah I snagged the samples off the med and pitched them up 2x and made them all mono so they fit right alongside my stock ep-133 sounds and I’m pretty satisfied. I’d like the arp though. I don’t really care about the demo songs, but resampling and a better song mode would make it damn near perfect.
Koala on iPad kicks both their asses 😁
@@StatetrooperBillyBill 😁🤓
None of them. I had the EP-133 as soon it was released. It's just a beautiful toy. I sold it one month later.
I believe in this case you would say "neither one"...😋
@@BendApparatus haha thank you! Non-native english speaker here. Sorry.
Yeah I agree BUT my wife won’t let me get rid of it she says it is so cute looking on the coffee table
@@drewdoctor1984 lucky guy.My wife wants me to sell everything😂
I was almost tempted by the original, purely for the aesthetics. Looked like a prop from Alien or something. But I know I wouldn’t really use it in production and 300+ bucks isn’t small change. I just got Koala instead.
I already sold my ko2 and got a Roland SP404 MK2 instead and couldn't be more happier! These TE machines feel like overpriced toys and this new machine should have been a addon on the original.... but they focus way to much on the looks.
What demographic are they aiming at with that funfair faux medieval device exactly?! 😂 Looks terrible doesn't it?
Which one? None of them! They just bring a new version, without fixing the old/known issues. For me it‘s not an option anymore. When it comes to the quality, it‘s a bad choice … sadly.
The arpevgiator is nothing else than the note repeat. Almost a scam IMO.
Thank you. They are both worthless
The next TE KO 2 series needs to actually be an EFFECTS PROCESSING unit, not relocating different parameters of an effect , stop all this repackaged medieval JEDI MARKETING MIND TRICKS.
Neither! Don’t waste your money on this stupidity, this apparatus has memory size of an IBM 486 machine, that’s beyond understanding.
