I see too many posts about power yet this car occupies a niche where it does everything.... i.e., gas mileage, ground clearance, basic transportation and reliability. Having driven many vehicles in foul weather, off road, in snow etc., much comes down to tires. Ground clearance is the "Holy Grail" as well.
I couldn't agree more. My rwd 2004 Mercedes finally died, and I wanted to get a truck, but they are way too expensive for my budget, but this vehicle has everything I need in a nice, handsome package. I got my 2021 a few weeks ago, and, dare I say, I'm almost "excited" for winter to come now. Another thing, the power is just fine for an average consumer like me; it does 75-80 mph without any issue.
I own a 2017 Impreza Sport my Father has the 2018 Outback Limited we live in VT. Your videos get me pumped for winter were we live in Vermont. Thank You!
It's planned for Monday :P We are going to Texas the 15-16 Déc for the 100 years of Chevrolet Trucks! Can't wait to show you that guys! Best wishes to you! Take care.
I know that on my 2017 Forester if I put my CVT in low it allows for higher rpm and torque multiplication when going off-road. I don’t know if you were in low or not but just a suggestion for you car question. Great job as always! Keep it up! 😊
That is VERY impressive!!!! Made me smile really BIG. Now I'm itching for the snow to come. I probably won't try that, that much in my new 2018 Crosstrek I bought a few months ago. Do you think you can do that with the all season tires the car comes with in xmode, or would you need snow tires?
good job wrecking the car. only because it's automatic the driver felt like speed and momentum was the key to not getting stuck in snow. If it was manual, he could cruise slowly without wrecking the car because the awd leaves no room for compromise in the standard form. my 06 wrx transmission is flawless in snow, now have type ra gearset and it's ok. wrx torque bias +manual = perfect for snow but will drink fuel fast.
To make this car perfect Subaru needs to give it a more powerful engine (At around 1:55 power was not enough to spin the rear wheels). I've always loved the Outback but the Crosstrek is growing on me.
Really like this vehicle, but hard to decide between manual or cvt. My wife can not drive manual anymore after her spinal fusion, however, she has her own car. Also Xmode looks like fun.
Well aware of this :-) Still having a hard time deciding if the CVT is worth having for Xmode. There is no real amazing definitive side by side comparison anywhere showing how superior or inferior it might be. Edit: Comparison between manual and CVT with Xmode.
You don't need xmode in a manual. Xmode is for going down hills which you can control in a manual and the manual is always 50/50 split between front and rear, the cvt is 60/40 and xmode puts it in 50/50. So in short manual basically is full time xmode.
Too bad that I just discover this video. I have been searching for years for a such video. How did the CVT held up? I think for no traction situations its best to keep VDC and X-mode off. Both systems are made to seek traction and may work against you in sand and snow. 32mph is the limit for keeping VDC off but who will go faster in offroad anyways. Again I am amazed by the CVT. I am sure a 2014/2017/2019 Forester could do this as well! Let me know what your thoughts are.
It held up fine! no disconnection at all of the AWD and no trans overheat problem! we did test a previous gen forester a long time ago check that out: ruclips.net/video/cW3zwUBMGF8/видео.html
@@CarQuestion I am very surprised by both the crosstrek and the Forester. The only concern about them is that no one sells the OEM CVT fluid but there are a lot of compatible replacements i guess. Keep up those videos, I love your channel! Also does VDC stay off until you turn it back on or it turns on again after a certain ammount of speed? And if you go below that speed will it come back to VVDC off or you have to push the button again?
I am looking at the crosstrek in a manual. It looked like it still handled pretty well without the x mode which you lose in the manual. Did you find that to be true?
Yep it does handle well! The xmode is for more serious stuff off-road or in more agressive situation but the momentum that you can get with the manual and the 50/50 awd is also great!
Car Question did recent reviews on Outback and short while ago with Forrester. But test conditions were different. Can someone with experience tell me given the same condition as from 2:40 to 2:53 segment in this video, will Outback and/or Forrester not get stuck in the thick snow with X-mode on? Also, in icy hilly slope, stop and turn situation (eg. at intersection on a hill), among these 3 models in this situation, will a shorter wheel base crosstrek & forrester with lower center of gravity fair better than outback under this stop and turn situation on an icy hill?
Thanks, great video. Really shows off the capabilities and limitations. I was surprised how in some cases you got stuck, or could not go forward event with the X-Ice. How much worse would it be with the stock all-seasons?
Michael Elkin haha this car is really bad in snow/ice with the tires it comes with...like really bad. I got stuck in 4in of snow. That being said, that applies to any car so it doesn’t really say anything about the Crosstrek. I put wildpeaks on my Crosstrek and now you have to put in some effort to get it stuck in snow. It’s still no Jeep or Tacoma in terms of off-road ability, but for a car it’s pretty fucken good!

Because we lose all momentum and with traction control ON it was too restrictive. What you cant really see on those test is the kind of snow we encounter.
