Due to sickness, this video's release was delayed. I think this is still a relevant and important topic and is a part of internet culture worth investigating further. This video also provides a larger amount of context than most sources have provided and we included more related insights into our own business in which many viewers misunderstand. We learned a lot from the research we did in this video and we would love to hear about things you may have learned as well. As always, If you believe there is anything we may have missed please let us know. Thanks.

Believe it or not, THIS is the kind of epic pull no punches real life fact and personal opinion many of us, including myself, subscribed to this channel for. Well this and geeking out on art, comic books, movies, etc, but this honest break it down and call it how you see it reporting is also a big part of it. 👍🍷🎉😄 Party on man

Do like Rooster Teeth and get you're own advertisers. Read the ad's off a script or whatever. I'd rather see RUclips Channels force ads on us by including them in their content then see RUclips big companies take over everyone's content. People use ad-blockers anyway, and besides, most of the ads I see on Rooster Teeth or similar RUclips shows that include ads in the content are for things I might actually be interested in. IMHO it'll be extremely difficult work, but you if you pull it off you'll be able to maintain control of your content, and possibly have some control over what kind of ads your viewers have to go through.

The trouble with youtube ads is that they're too invasive I find. When it was only banner ads, I never had an issue, but when they started putting them in the actual video window things just went down hill. The fact they haven't figured out to make profit is their own fault. I don't know if it's still the case, but a lot of junk videos used to get uploaded to youtube which is obviously eating into resources.

I like my content treating me like an a adult, I like swearing in my videos. advertisers are the least imaginative people on the internet, they're having trouble adjusting so everybody else must buckle for them. Trying to censor content in games, TV, movies and comics because it isn't "diverse enough" or "sensitive enough to women" is bullshit. Microaggressions are bullshit. The Patriarchy is bullshit. BLM (for the most part) is bullshit.

As to let creators pick products which should be played before the video, I guess I would like to see creators getting the same amount of revenue regardless of which products/brands were chosen. Otherwise the incentive would shift from what the creator likes to what fills his pockets with money the fastest. ..also, Fuck Credit Cards!

I also find it hard to believe that advertisers care about ad placement. The only reason advertising works is because of repetition and brand recognition. Which means you just want to get in front of as many eyeballs as possible. I wouldn't be surprised if advertisers start questioning RUclips's policy and start wanting to see better data about what demographic opportunities they're missing because of it. Also, I have RUclips Red which is ad free. Do creators get anything for my views? It seems pretty ridiculous if they don't.

    • @youdoitillwatch
      @youdoitillwatch 8 лет назад +5

_The only reason advertising works is because of repetition and brand recognition._
I had an idea for a Super Bowl ad that consisted of a well known company, such as Coke or Nike, spending the entire ad just flashing their logo, in white, onto a black screen, with no audio whatsoever, for the entire 15-30 spot.
If nothing else, you'd have had local and national TV news running spots about whether or not that (very expensive) commercial ad time was 'wasted.' ...and that's what we call free media!

Also, it's great to know that CBG19 is a TYT fan. Good content creators support OTHER good content creators.
As for the RUclips kerfuffle, within the next few years I'm sure we're going to be seeing most major advertisers' old regime dying off & them getting more younger people moving up in their ranks. Long story short, people who at least were in high school when the internet was booming being in charge of things, so no more of these advertisers completely clueless to even what a meme IS!

Jordan Russo Dave just needs to learn how not to let his guests walk all over him. He's trying to find that line between being interesting and being a good interviewer. He'll get there, but he definitely needs to be slightly more aggressive with his guests.

    • @jordanthomas4379
      @jordanthomas4379 8 лет назад +1

I can understand why his show and his style of conducting his interviews and interactions with his guests can seem uneven at times. But I wouldn't call it "walk[ing] all over him" as you put it, I think he is just trying to maintain an equal playing field with those that he agrees and disagrees with. Dave has always said that he wants "a debate of ideas", that being said, he is definitely trying his best to remain PROgressive rather than REgressive and bias like the TYT network and much of the mainstream media has become in recent years.

@Mr. VonMeister, That's really closed-minded thinking. Voluntary, yes, but there "sandbox" has been built to astronomical levels because of said content. Now they're a behemoth because of the content creators. They are a household name because of the content creators. They make ad revenue because of the content creators. Without the content, they are nothing. And now that they have a "stranglehold" on the market, they are censoring what they want. It's a shitty maneuver.

would be nice, but reality would quickly hit you in the pocket book.
And really you can't have a site where people can actually say what they want.
Read through the average forum, lot's of b.s., dumb unrelated comments, bickering and arguments, and if you post something that violates the T.o.S, poof goes the comment, even if it's relevant to the discussion and in no way could be construed as inflammatory or controversial.
hell just read through the comments section here and see how stupid and uninformed people are.
Lots of comments talking about only needing a camera and a computer to produce a video.

By changing how videos are permitted to monetize, it is a form of censorship. An indirect one, but still censorship.
Think about it like this, when a conventional t.v. show does something "controversial" what's the first thing that happens?
      Advertisers pull revenue.
Because the advertisers don't want to be associated with that show.
      No ad revenue, no show.

+Mackenzie Lambert If you don't get any advertising money on Vimeo, how do you have more creative freedom? You could just as easily do absolutely anything on youtube and not have it monetized. You are not being stymied on youtube as long as you're not expecting advertising revenue. You could beg for money the same ways on youtube. Unless vimeo has some sort of setup I don't know about. But then again, I never saw vimeo, and I am sure millions of other people haven't either. So being on both sites could be beneficial since this one gets so much traffic.

I mean put yourself in the position of an advertiser: You wouldn't want your add budget to end up sporting a fascist propaganda channel, and you certainly don't want your product associated with that, even if it doesn't affect sales. Imagine how mad you would be to have your content associated with that.
It's in no way censorship and has nothing to do with free speech. Having the right to free speech doesn't imply an entitlement to get paid for it.

ufailowell But most people are idiots, and advertisers know that, so they know that most people will think that their ads are related to the videos they appear before and during. Thus since a product or service is only successful if a lot of people pay for it, therefore it is important that most people not associate it with something they would want to boycott. Therefore, advertisers have to act as though their ads are related to the videos they are attached to, even though they know that only idiots would think that.

Marketer here. This is 100% about placement. Advertisers care a GREAT DEAL about what their brand is associated with, and will pay much more to have it placed in a way that benefits the brand / campaign. It all comes down to ROI, and this is a move that will let advertisers increase that. This bridges a gap that was missing for advertisers, especially if they roll it out so we can choose which topics / themes to advertise in front of. For example - I have a client who deals with recovering alcoholics. They can't advertise on RUclips until we can guarantee that their brand won't be associated with alcohol in any overt manner. Once RUclips changes things, my client will be happy to spend money here. I'm certain my example is not isolated, and only scratches the surface about why advertisers are timid to have their brand associated with potentially anything.

Okay, let's clarify one thing: google does know your audience better. They have waaaaay more data to crunch about general public, but also individually. So, basically, everyone is a subscriber (i.e. has a google/YT acc) has individualized data and profile, which include search terms that go beyond YT interests, so they can delve even deeper. That is why "conicidentally" if you have been googling things like "house to rend/buy", you get more YT ads that fit that search (rental companies in your country/state, loan companies, furniture, etc.)
Ironically, the fact that your argument about you knowing your audience better isn't actually supported by the evidence proves even further the point that this new policies and the way they're being handled are complete nonsense. FIrst off, as much as masses can be dumb, they're not moronic enough to assume that there is an inherent relationship between a creator's content and ads that youtube displays. And since the ads are personalized, does it make sense to assume that a company does not want their ad shown to someone who is looking EXACTLY for something like their product because the ad is being displayed before a video which content is "controversial"? Of the fucking course not. They know you want their product, and that 99.999999981823% of the people aren't that retarded to assume your product relates to the content endorses the video it is displayed on. The only possible way they would care is if the video's content is against their product (loan company ads on top of a video titled "exposing credit company scams" would indeed be idiotic), and even then not always. You have to be that specific, and only a complete imbecile would make a company policy based on the rare exception.
Now, we could just assume that the big names at google are complete idiots to believe that said policy is actually rational and makes sense.... Which would mean, we are even dumber than that. No, of course not, google guys know better than that. But if they know better than that and still do it, we should be asking ourselves what the fuck is really up, because clearly the claimed motivation for their new attitude can only be smoke and mirrors.

RUclips sold out a while ago give them time and will be mostly mainstream crap ( regular cable is going to die in a few years) youtube is poised to take over once that happens. I'd suggest the people screwed by this to start their own site because at some point youtube will move to make themselves more like a regular TV station and regular people will get screwed.

  • @duushbaggins2961

This is clearly not censorship. RUclips is a company and, at least in the US, any company has the right to refuse business to anyone. Fundamentally, the outrage stems from the potential removal of tools for monetization due to the nature or substance of content. RUclips is not preventing anyone from creating the type of content they currently do. Presumably, this is a step to create confidence in advertisers that their products will be advertised in channels that are more suitable to their chosen demographic and/or ideals. That could be an incorrect assumption but it is a reasonable one. Since I am one who tends to looks for what can be done, instead of what can't be done, I would offer what I think is a better solution. RUclips could create a system of tags for content providers to apply to their channel. Advertisers could choose the tags amiable to their goals. Viewers would then allow or restrict channels according to their use case. This, combined with demographic choices, would allow advertisers the confidence that their ads would play to their chosen audience. The burden of monetization would be on the content providers who, if incorrectly tagging their channel intentionally of unintentionally, could be subject to a ban from the tags in question. In the real world, trying to sell a line of t-shirts that have big, bold letters saying "FU MOM!" at a PTA convention would most likely result in a lack of monetization. I am all for free speech and freedom of expression but I am also in favor of the freedom to choose your audience.

Just as you said: The lessons that advertisers need to learn again is that their ads have nothing to do with the rest of the program. This isn't sports sponsering it is the old fashioned TV commercials in a new medium.
And since both are seperate entities, and the audience doesn't connect for example Pepsi as the drink of Hoss Cartwright, the content of the program itself should not be subject to any form of change, just because RUclips thinks that would make it more advertising friendly.
Again, this isn't sports sponsoring, where any misconduct of the athletes is also painting the sponsor in a bad light.

The one thing everyone should understand is Internet video ads are not bought by channel or show, but by consumer. The "real time bidding" (RTB) protocol, made standard by the Internet Advertising Bureau (iab) specifies how consumers can be tracked by a sort of server-side "cookie" (not a client-side browser cookie).
Those cookies represent what RUclips and their advertiser partners, known as Demand Management Platforms (DMPs) know (or think they know) about your demographics, geographic location, behavior and interests. So they can, ideally, show you ads that are of interest to you.
The problem occurs when the ad "inventory" has no match with your interests. They try to do a good match, and if not, they default to some other ad in their portfolio which their sponsors have given them to push out.
Many, many DMPs could theoretically be bidding for access to your eyeballs. However, we often see the same ads because inventory supply is far less than the demand to serve out so many images.
Part of why RUclips may be scaling back is because advertisers are realizing that some of their ads are falling flat when shown in front of certain kinds of content.
For example, barrel bomb casualties in Syria, brought to you by a credit card company. ("What's in your wallet?" "Nothing, because my body was blown away below the waist...")
If you want an example of video ad placement, look into Virool. Also, if you ever want to create your own ads for this awesome channel, you can start with a budget as low as $100.

The thing about RUclips is not so much that they aren't paying you for your content, it's that advertisers are choosing not to pay for ads to run on whatever channels they don't approve of. And I'm fine with that... Why should an advertiser be forced to pay to run ads on just any old channel?
Now, RUclips is informing content creators that their videos MAY not be suitable for advertisers. Basically, RUclips is making creators aware of the suitability (or not) of the content in a video. What creators do with that information is up to them... be 'suitable' and keep advertisers interested, or don't be 'suitable' and risk losing ad revenue.

  • @77thNYSV

Also, here's how online advertising works. The companies themselves, like Toyota or McDonalds, don't decide where they advertise. The actual companies, like Toyota, join a company called an ad provider through whom they will advertise. It's the ad provider that decides where and what to advertise. One big ad provider is called OpenX, another SOVRN and Google AdExchange is another. So, for example, a website, or RUclips, gathers metadata from users through cookies. Those cookies give the ad provider an idea of the type of user they're looking at. Then the ad providers bid against each other for ad units, which are the specific ads on a website. Those ad providers who win the bidding then decide which ads they'll put there based on the metadata gathered.
The family friendly standards come from the fact that the individual companies, like Toyota, don't want their ads to pop up next to, say, a porno. They want to maintain their reputation. So, that behooves the ad providers to also maintain their reputations by deciding which sites they'll advertise on and which ones they won't.
And that's where the monetization part comes into play. If you just own a website that's your personal blog and only costs you for your yearly hosting and domain registration, then it's not too big of a loss. But if you're a huge entity like RUclips that is costing billions of dollars and you can't monetize your site because content is deemed not family friendly by providers then you're faced with either turning your free RUclips service into a subscription based service in order to raise revenue that way or.... let RUclips die.

I understand RUclips's need to accommodate advertisers but if they just allowed videomakers and advertisers to specify A) which videos have what kind of content and B) which advertisers are willing and/or actually WANT to be advertised with that content, the interests of both groups would be well and truly protected while allowing the system to flourish.
The current system isn't bad because "oh no we're being censoooooored..."
It's bad because it's just... dumb, guys. It's not an intelligently-designed system. On television, this stuff is usually just regulated by time itself--you don't want to be advertised alongside a particular kind of content, you pay for a different time slot or a different channel altogether. On RUclips the only advertising regulation comes from cookies that tell Google what kind of stuff the individual viewer likes so it can advertise that stuff at them, which is why I keep getting World of Warcraft: Legion ads and similar stuff. That's fine and good, but it only leaves one category of choice for advertisers themselves. And asking everyone in the content-creation base to adhere to one category's limitations might as well be tying a plastic bag over RUclips's head. It's beyond stifling; it's suffocating.
Fortunately the collective intelligence of most people involved in this seems to be higher than that of whoever devised the system, because the actual degree to which this is enforced is stupidly low. The fact is the only new thing about this is that people are being notified about demonetization now, and can appeal it. Before this debacle, it would still happen, you just wouldn't notice until you manually checked. WHICH WAS ALSO STUPID, but it also makes one wonder if it's worth worrying about--the odds of a video being demonetized this week aren't actually any higher than they were a year ago, in spite of the policy no longer being secretly buried in a TOS that half of us were too lazy to read.

I pay zero attention to ads. I really don't understand why advertisers dump in sooo much money into ads.

pretty sure the advert before this video was a promo for The Magnificent Seven, which ironically probably doesn't abide by those new RUclips rules.

So true!!! Every ad video that pops up before my RUclips, I'm hitting that Skip Button like 90% of the time(unless it's something I like - but most of the time not really b/c it's random ads).

17:42 The only problem with picking your own ad is everyone would pick the alcohol and marvel commercials and ignore the . . . water filter and sock commercials.

The reason you can't pick the commercials is because people would alter their video making strategies to match the algorithms that make the most money. The reason adsense details aren't shared with the audience is because they know that people will manipulate the system (Particularly if a third party company was able to parse the data.)
All youtube needs to do to make money is create some kind of subscription plan for the user that offers genuine value. If people are willing to pay 100 bucks a month for shitty cable, they'd be willing to pay as much for a youtube subscription if it were actually providing some kind of value. The youtube model is really dated and I believe they are afraid to change it because Google hasn't had many good new ideas in over a decade.

The general arguments immediately dismiss what the youtube platform offers to ANYONE. Its like "RUclips please do all the work for hosting and finding revenue but let me do
whatever I want and just pay me". Pulling the censorship card is a bit of a reach. All
they are doing is taking the ad money part, they are still doing everything else for uploaders. I'm not even sure exactly what content creators want from bringing up this issue (besides money).

This is why everyone should use advertisement blocking software. If no one is watching advertisements, then advertisers have no power over RUclips content creators.

This is the best analysis of the business and also of the political situation. CBG19 for RUclips CEO? There's no reason why shows can't choose their advertisers, everyone would benefit from it.
"Advertiser friendly"? That really sounds like censorship to me. RUclips/Google is clearly too lazy to bother to do even keyword scans of the videos or comments on prior videos in a series or anything that might actually match the ad to the audience. This is a major opportunity for another video service to do a puny amount of content analysis and inbound link analysis (even using Google's search!).
This is inexplicable, really. I can easily think of a dozen advertisers who would love specifically to target the CBG19 audience. If RUclips is losing money, that's their own fault.

I think the funniest thing is when I come to RUclips looking for a clever commercial I've heard about, and they show me another (usually unrelated) commercial before the commercial I want to see. Although I do recall at least once coming here to watch a movie trailer, only to that very trailer show as an ad before playing again as the video I came to see.
Frankly, I am shocked that Google has yet to figure out how to make money off of RUclips. Their primary source of revenue is advertising, tailored specifically to the searches and online conversations of Netizens. I think CBG19 (can I call you that?) is right, Google could simply ask the video uploaders what sorts of products they think should be advertised, then also use the information they already have on *all* viewers to tailor ads to us, just like they do *everywhere* else on the internet. They already suggest new videos to me based on videos I've watched, but they can't do that with ads? Surely they know what ads I skip and what ads I sit all the way through. Google is a billion-dollar company with its primary revenue from ads, and they can't figure this out?

Slight correction. Advertisers used to spend crazy money on the internet toward the end of the 90s early 2000s. Then they realized how little value it had and that's around when the massive tech bubble burst. Sites that were the big draws in those days dried up overnight. Today's internet is a totally different animal so drawing in the big advertising money makes more sense again.

I would say that probably 90% of the stuff I watch on RUclips is not 'advertiser friendly', based on their definition, but I have a plenty of money to spend on products. Advertisers know this so I am sure they are not the ones pushing for this. You can already, as an advertiser, decide what kind of video to have your video associated with based on tags etc. RUclips have missed an opportunity here, they should have just linked videos to each 'problem' on their list and allowed advertisers to choose. Then it's a free market for content and ad revenue would follow the content rather than content being forced to follow the ads. After all some advertisers may prefer their product being shown before these types of videos.

I dont think you have much to worry about. I feel this is a way to be able to take down channels that are not things you want on your platform. An example may be. in the Netherlands we have a few lesser known rappers that make vlogs where they harras cops, assault random people, threathen people, stab tires of cars, set up fights with other vlogging rappers (100 dudes mobilised to have a large brawl) and other such madness (its not all negative but a good portion of it is). They do this because apparently people want to watch stuff like this and it generates views and most likely money from adds. I think RUclips has to have some way to shut this down without too much discussion.

I find it funny how there are advertisements televised that meet some of the inappropriate content which RUclips considered. Suddenly, RUclipsrs are not allowed to produce any of the "inappropriate" content, but allow to monetize the advertisements that meet the some of , if not all, the inappropriate contents. Sounds pretty ironic to me.

You're one of the first - if not the first - youtube channels I started with following. I've never send you any money, didn't buy merch, or watched your epic history-vids behind paywalls. I'd love to support you, but I haven't got the money yet... Please, don't stop existing before I finally have the money to pay for your stuff... one day I will have a job that pays me. One day I will financially suport you. I want to! I just can't, not yet.

This seems like a very one sided policy. RUclips considers what material that advertisers want their ads playing over but not what ads content creators want playing over their content?
Nothing RUclips does ever seems to imply much appreciation of the people actually creating the content for them to monetise.

Very thought provoking video! I agree with the idea of being able to pick your own commercials with another idea being perhaps less generic and more refinement on categories to place your videos. Example: this one is simply "entertainment". Whereas: Entertainment > Reviews > Comic books and perhaps in the future a demographic option based on related videos the viewer "liked" or something might more accurately pitch your videos to more people that would be more receptive to them. This, coupled with an advertiser being able to select those same categories to advertise on....and I think that would be ideal for both the youtuber and the advertiser.
I think you also hit the nail on the head with "I dunno I skip them"...we all do. But perhaps advertisers adopting less outdated 30/60 second spots and more to-the-point 5-10 second spots might be more beneficial in getting their product noticed. I'd still skip em after 5 though. No time for love Dr Jones!

The Revolution that she's talking about is just her generation's coming of age. That always seems like a world changing event to the up and coming generation and, in a way, it is - - FOR THEM. Businesses want to make money, and RUclips is a business. RUclips is trying to force more of their content creators - the ones who are trying to make $$$ too - to make content with which advertisers want to be associated. End. Of. Story.
