  • We are targeting December 23rd for launch of the United States Air Force's first Global Positioning System III space vehicle (SV) from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. Liftoff is currently targeted for 8:51 a.m. EST, 13:51 UTC.
For this mission, the satellite will be deployed to medium Earth orbit approximately 1 hour and 56 minutes after liftoff. Due to mission requirements, SpaceX will not attempt to land Falcon 9’s first stage after launch.
Note: The RUclips event start time reflects the estimated liftoff time for this mission. SpaceX's live webcast will begin about 10 minutes before liftoff.

yep.... Tintin did it. To the Moon and back, in the 1950s. Took two episodes, but still. SpaceX is not bad either. There were some Russian/Soviet rockets doing the same too about 30-40 years ago. Saljut missions? Insight had its 6-7 minutes of Terror at Mars entry, the cosmonauts had their seconds of terror. Pee in your space suit all you want during the final deceleration moment, you never know if it's your last warm and funny feeling. Might as well enjoy it.

A respectful suggestion for a big improvement to these videos:
Please let us here the radio traffic, instead of the constant din of the awful music. The Apollo missions, and those before them were perfectly fine without assailing viewers' ears with unnecessary noise. SpaceX missions are just as exciting, arguably more exciting, than the NASA missions of 50+ years ago.
Radio traffic, even if sparse, tells us much more, and often provides more drama, than a pair of (competent) presenters interspersed with cacophony could ever do. What you folks are doing is a real series of achievements, and can stand alone, and perfectly well, with no musical distractions.
Yes; I know that we have a 'mute' button, but that means we miss the informative audio dialogues when they are provided.
Thanks, and congratulations SpaceX! Have a truly pioneering 2019.

Do you realize that the speed of Stage 2 was at one point above 31000km/h? That's more than 8.6km (5.3miles) per second! Also, that speed is bigger than the speed of a human walking by foot by a factor of 15500. Multiply the speed of Stage 2 by a factor of just 34000 and you get the speed of light :O Speeds accessible to human beings have grown exponentially in the last thousands of years. Israelis are not exactly hanging their heads to have SpaceX launching a payload for them, that will land on the Moon.

SpaceX have launched heavier satellites into higher orbits with recovering the first stage:
      Satellite: Es'hail-2
      Payload mass 5300 kg
      Orbit: GTO-1746 (200 x 37688 x 25.0°)
*But* in such launches, the second stage remained in orbit. For example, today, the orbit of the second stage from the Es'hail launch is:
      NORAD ID: 43701
      Int'l Code: 2018-090B
      Perigee: 189.7 km
      Apogee: 37,372.4 km
      Inclination: 25.0 °
      For today's GPS III launch:
      Payload mass 4400 kg
      Orbit: 1200 x 20200 x 55°
Putting this payload into this orbit would have taken less energy. *But* today SpaceX also had de-orbited the second stage on the first orbit. This required fuel for the additional second stage engine furn, and the mass of this fuel directly adds to the mass of the payload taken to the orbit. So the effective payload was easily many tons more than appears at a first glance.
That's why they needed more performance from the first stage:
GPS III MECO 2650 m/s at H=82 km
      Es'hail-2 MECO 2334 m/s at H=67 km
Incidentally, today's velocity at stage separation was approximately the same as in Falcon Heavy test flight!
Falcon Heavy test flight MECO 2622 m/s at H=87 km

A respectful request to SpaceX and Elon Musk.... It's days before 2019. Technology is at the forefront of our lives and yet, despite spending millions of dollars on each launch, you still outfit your rocket with the same boring camera looking at the second stage engine. With the money you're spending on each launch would it be that difficult to add a remote control articulating camera so that we could get a good glimpse at the whole sphere of the planet from 8500 km away?? I'm not asking for that much... But I've noticed there are no videos that have ever shown rocket launch footage with full 360 degrees view of the planet Earth... Don't believe me, go try to find it. Multiple problems-
      1) Weight - The camera may not be very expensive, but its weight penalty on the rocket could be huge. Add in the circuits for relaying camera image.
      2) Bandwidth - SpaceX may wish to reserve the rocket's wireless link's bandwidth for important telemetry, as opposed to HD 4K video downlink.
      3) Reliability - Usually for man-rated rockets like Falcon 9 Block 5, their design is 'frozen' to avoid non-uniformity. The F9 design could have been 'frozen' by NASA with the current camera setup.
      4) Government Regulations - Governments aren't usually happy with HD cameras in space, because they could be doubled for ground-observation. Thus they don't allow HD cameras in space without a lot of paperwork. This happened with SpaceX in one of their launches when NOAA forced them to take the stream off-air after SECO-1.

      2. This is 2018, there's enough bandwidth for billions of cell phones in the world but you can't have one camera dedicated to spacecraft environment observations?
      3. This wouldn't surprise me. Even though SpaceX is a private company, NASA still controls everything.
      4. Suspicious that the government would limit what people can see in space. Most people would argue for more transparency in the realm of public space information.

I concur, except point (3). NASA is a customer of SpaceX, and thus NASA gets to dictate how the launch vehicle on which they launch their payload looks like.
Thus, SpaceX could have developed two versions of Falcon 9, one 'complaint' to NASA, and one maybe not; however this would cost *too much* money so they use the NASA rated F9 for every mission.
Also, it's in general a bad idea to keep horsing around with manned launch vehicles' design after they have been 'frozen', otherwise things like Challenger and Columbia happen. :(

Liquid oxygen is let out into the vacuum. Some of it evaporates, and because evaporation causes cooling, whatever is left freezes into a solid "snow".
Even without vacuum, you will see exactly the same phenomenon with an ordinary CO2 fire extinguisher -- when let out, some of the liquid CO2 evaporates, and the rest turns into a very cold solid ("dry ice"). Same thing happens to liquid nitrogen or oxygen if you spray them into vacuum.
There are many outlets on the engine. They are necessary to keep everything working properly -- to purge what needs to be purged, etc. During stage separation (here at 9:50) you can see 6 hoses that lead from such outlets to the vents on the interstage that go overboard while the stages are still connected together.

Most likely some frozen liquid oxygen or ice.

    • @cogoid
      @cogoid 5 лет назад +4

@@rockskyred549 It is solid oxygen. In this area there are several outlets that spew copious amount of liquid oxygen before, during, and after engine burn. When LOX gets into vacuum, the liquid starts to boil off instantly, cools to a freezing point, and whatever has not evaporated turns into "snow".

The atmosphere of this launch seems empty. No pun intended, really. Everyone just seems tired and unenthusiastic. Hell, only 1 person reacts to stage seperation.

Most non-related staffs were starting packing things home for the long Xmas and New Year holiday already, except those unfortunate mission staffs having to wait until GPS III went into orbit.
Oh, and nighttime launches are quiet too nowadays (except on some occasions like 1st land landing at VAFB.) They launch so much F9 they get bored on space themselves. :)
