In 1972 I had bought a 1963 Pontiac Lemans that came stock with a 4 cylinder and 4 bbl carb. It looked exactly like they cut a V8 in half. It was a crazy looking engine but it ran decent. It looked pretty much like the f-85 . Thanks for the memories 👍

Absolutely Love that car!! Some of those around 63 or 64 that had the 330 ultra compression did had a 4bbl 4 speed. Dad had one, he bought it from the original owner.
My grandpa has had a 77 Oldsmobile sitting in his garage for ever. I'm 17 and just seen it for the first time in my life when he pulled all the junk off and took the cover off. It looked brand new besides a few small ripples in the back quarter panel from being hit by stuff in the garage.
Its good practice - to make sure its stopped before cranking it again. Yeah, I know - you can hear that its stopped with the hood open etc, but when its all together, you maybe cant.
Tyler's forgotten mopar rescue, thunderhead 289, and Kevin here on junkyard digs are all three a great source of understanding and adjust and tuning of carburetors!!
Thank you for the video. I hope you decide to continue working on the car. I believe you can bring it back to roadworthy status. Additionally I always learn from watching you and your team. Thank you again, and keep up the good work.
Thank you for adding the technical details into the discussion, and at an understandable level. My dad did a great job of teaching me *what* needed to happen with an engine, but not always *why*. Thank you for filling in the blanks!!

I really like watching you guys fixing cars. I'm learning a lot from you. I'm not a mechanic by any means but some day when I find an old car to fix up I'll have your videos to guide me.
I have never been so rude as to just walk into someone else's garage, or yard even, and just start acting like I've known them forever. Now with you guys, I would stop by to say hi, but I would also ask if I can help in any way with whatever you're working on. Hell, I'd ask if I could clean up things for you so that you can just keep working on your projects.

My cousin was a Chinook helicopter engineer in the US Army. I think he still services them now in the civilian sector. He took me on a tour of one once on the airfield, and we got to remove some of the service covers! fun times!
My grandfather was a mechanic in WW2 and we had one of these in the shop with the same problem. His quick solution was to pull his car up beside it and simply pull the oil pressure senders out of both cars and add a tee below each sender. Then he ran an oil hose from his car to the engine with no oil pressure. He added 3 extra quarts to his engine. He then drained all the oil out of the engine with no oil pressure. With the drain plug out he started his car and timed how long it took for his car to pump 3 quarts into the other car. Then he put the plug back in added 3 quarts back in his car. He put 3 quarts in the engine without oil pressure. Started his car then started the other car and let them both run a bit. Worked perfect and we always did it after this demo. He said when he was in the war they would use a chevy truck with an oil line to heat up air cooled plane and tank engines on the front lines. He said they just left the drain plug out and poured the oil back in the truck engine. With planes he said they had a hose from the drain plug back to the truck engine. Makes perfect sense once you think about it the hot oil heated up the engine with no anti freeze. During the war stuff was pretty frantic and he had lots of neat tricks.

When I was a kidI worked with an old timer who had zero use for a timing light! He would set the timing by feel and by ear! Results were impressive! Once in awhile if it pinged he would set it back a bit! Same with dwell meters. Never used one. He would set points gap by eye balling them. He had a unique quality that allowed him to grab spark plug wires without the shock bothering him. He took a special delight in charging up condensers and leaving for one of us to pick up!
That timing explanation is really helpful! It was exactly what I was looking for! Please keep up the tech talk it really helps out guys like me just learning!
Having to listen to that mechanical malcontent is payback for karaoke! Let that engine die the death it is crying out for - I've never heard an engine that didn't want to run so much, and that was AFTER tuning. Yeesh.
Great explanation of tuning. I'm going to put the methods learned from this into practice. Now I think I know why I am getting dieseling sometimes. Thank you. I can't understand why people think it's ok to just walk into your shop. I have had a similar experience as well, only once though. I have had a "fan" outside my house opening the door and looking inside Ol' Green. I went out and confronted him and he didn't see the problem. I didn't know him and didn't invite him to come on my property and open the door to my truck so of course, I yelled at him. He left and yelled back"You're mean, I'm unsubscribing!" I have had some come and knock on the door and was glad to sit and talk with them and show them around. I even have met people at the gas station or the store and am glad to talk to them. That's fine, in fact, I love that, but don't just invite yourself in.
I've used pb blaster for a while and then discovered deep creep. Deep creep is a miracle worker. I have spun loose header and exhaust bolts that wouldn't even come loose after soaking in other stuff and heating, that spun off after a soak in deep creep. I have also use deep creep to free stuck valves. Just sprayed and let it soak and they freed right up.
My Triumph TR6 has the problem with idling too high while stopping until I flip the pedal. I had never thought about the distributor weights and springs. Can’t wait to try it. Mark
Kevin…you sir are a true genius…your brain contains so much amazing information about all things mechanical. I have knowledge envy…thank you for sharing!!
A little tip i was givin and thought i would pass on. Get some metal dryer hose and put over exhaust going out a door will vent exhaust outside. Works for me.
Good idea about panting the timing mark. If you have a stamped set of numbers on your balancer, another way to help them stand out is to clean them up well, then take black shoe polish and wipe it across the grooves. The polish will stay in the grooves making them stand out better.

I mean sure, yeah, it'd be cool to go around and meet some of the RUclipsrs I watch, but I wouldn't just barge in on them.
You may have to, unfortunately, put some big "go the eff away" sign on the door. Also, if you don't mind putting in a little more money into the place, you could put in a magnetic door lock with a keycard or keypad.
I would love to drop by and just hang out and help out with a project you have but, I understand that you can't be friends with everyone. It's practically impossible to do.
Kevin worked so hard on this and was so hopeful, only to have his spirit crushed when he tried to drive it around the yard. Still a great video though!
Hey Kevin & Mook, love the content guys . Kevin, I appreciate the way you take the time to explain things in layman's terms. And, I agree people need to stay out of the shop unless invited in. Keep up the great work guys devoted fan BUT not stalker lol. Have a blessed day guys.
Absolutely Love that car!! Some of those around 63 or 64 that had the 330 ultra compression did had a 4bbl 4 speed. Dad had one, he bought it from the original owner.
I loved the tech in this video! Finally learned how to use a timing light
My grandpa has had a 77 Oldsmobile sitting in his garage for ever. I'm 17 and just seen it for the first time in my life when he pulled all the junk off and took the cover off. It looked brand new besides a few small ripples in the back quarter panel from being hit by stuff in the garage.
Great job explaining timing, vacuum and carb adjustment. I always appreciate the lesson 👍

Mook, you don't need to cycle the key on an old car. You can keep it in the run position and go back to start a hundred times no problem.

For those of you who communicate in memes Kevin said “get out my room I’m playing minecraft”

He left and yelled back"You're mean, I'm unsubscribing!"
I have had some come and knock on the door and was glad to sit and talk with them and show them around. I even have met people at the gas station or the store and am glad to talk to them. That's fine, in fact, I love that, but don't just invite yourself in.
Really great explanation of timing, advance, etc
I've used pb blaster for a while and then discovered deep creep. Deep creep is a miracle worker. I have spun loose header and exhaust bolts that wouldn't even come loose after soaking in other stuff and heating, that spun off after a soak in deep creep. I have also use deep creep to free stuck valves. Just sprayed and let it soak and they freed right up.
My Triumph TR6 has the problem with idling too high while stopping until I flip the pedal. I had never thought about the distributor weights and springs. Can’t wait to try it.

That's a mighty old engine for 5w30... just my opinion... plus it's likely low on needed additives like zinc and phosphorus..
Good idea about panting the timing mark. If you have a stamped set of numbers on your balancer, another way to help them stand out is to clean them up well, then take black shoe polish and wipe it across the grooves. The polish will stay in the grooves making them stand out better.
