- Vaughn Bode speaks on creator rights, censorship, Stan Lee, National Lampoon, Jeff Jones, East Village Other, the birth of Cheech Wizard, creating and living his art. Thank you to Sigmund Humanski.
This man was a genius. He was WAY before his time. As an ex-graffiti writer from NYC, I grew up seeing him idolized by the top graffiti artist. It wasn't uncommon to see Cheech Wizard and the Bode females characters illustrated on the trains. To this day, I still look at his magazines for guidance. Peace to Mr. Bode (RIP), Stan 153, Noc 167, Dondi (RIP), Snooze TC5, and the others...
How long you write for?
How WONDERFUL that this footage exists at all. Thank you so very much for posting this; I've been a fan for over 20 years...never heard Vaughn speak until now. It was really moving for me actually. Again, thanks!
An underrated artist of the 20th century in my opinion. Thanks for the video. I appreciate his connection with his art. To me, giving up the rights makes the art an empty shell.
Unsure if you are still here. I was born in 1985 to an artist who was gathering notoriety in the 80s in Miami, mostly due to his marketing that cocaine dealers picked up on to fill the void of what my dad describes as mansions with giant walls owned by people with 'too much money and wall real-estate' to afford not to buy his art. My father is getting older and had a heart attack in 2023 followed by some other health issues. I have never personally felt like an artist, but will say that my dad, bother, uncles, aunts, grandfather, and many others, are artists to point I feel very few could compete as far as their art acumen and development of individual personal style. Needless to say, I have a high regard for the arts and am very grateful for the upbringing I had by a professional artist. I support artists I believe in and will do so forever.
It is seldom I teach my dad about art or artists he does not already know, but the feeling I get when I can and the feeling I see in him when he is interested in what I bring him is a gift in itself. I bought him a vintage copy of "Vaughn Bode's Cheech Wizard : the collected adventures of the cartoon Messiah" for Christmas this year and he says that when he wakes up throughout the night due to his medical issues, he loves having it by the bedside as something interesting to read and look at in his disturbed slumber.
I bring this up for two reasons.
1) Learning about Vaughn Bode the last few years, both his art and his legacy, I can tell you first hand how much I appreciate him. I have small children and enjoy introducing them to something unfamiliar I think they will like, but to be able to provide my artist dad with something new to him I think he will enjoy, and does, warms my heart the same way, maybe more. Since he has had that book, every time I have spoken with him he brings it up with something new he took from it, despite it being almost fifty years old now and occurring at or before the start of my dad's art career.
2) As time moves as fast as it does, I don't believe Vaughn Bode's work and legacy will fall into the ether. If anything, I think appreciation for him, underground comix, or him propelling his type of graphic art, will only be appreciated more as we go on. My experience with him has only been through his works and it was very nice hearing him discuss this topic as artists' 'rights' has been a recent topic with my dad since so many in his day gave their rights to print-makers, gallery owners, and publishers as was common then.
This is truly AMAZING! LONG LIVE VAUGHN BODE ❤️
Vaughn bode will always be a huge inspiration to me
This is such a wonderful primary source.
Fantastic to hear his voice, see him draw - amazing.

left handed AGAIN, all my favourite artists are left handed as i am myself!!
Jonny Chaos I'm left handed as well. Only realised that Bode was left handed from a post by his son Mark and watching this again as well.
Love Vaughn Bode met him comic con 70's sat.right next to him.
Bodé, apart from his private life, is an iconic artist. Such a shame he didn't get to produce more material, what a tragedy.
... man ! ... da Cheech Wizard ! da Western Bode-sattva ! da one &only cartoon gooroo !
you're still my inspiration, Vaughn ! .... (died july 1975)
"once upon a time on a tiny little planet called summermouse ...." =')
VAUGHN BODE BROUGHT ME HERE.
Just picked up the Fantagraphics collection of his Cheech Wizard strips at the local library. Such a talent; such a loss. Didn't realize he was left handed! Or that he looked like Marc Bolan.
Tragic that he passed so young.
Disney Studios slipped off the cliff rejecting Vaughn, besides, Disney Studios remain stagnant.
Art is truly an innate talent, bestowed to a limited amount of blessed people. To any aspiring artist, never give up,never waste your talent, eve if just for hobby, use it! You could become a game animation artist,a cartoonist,or even a family portrait artist. Instead of a family photographer, offer something unique,a drawn family portrait. Offer your services on social media, free advertising. Pass out business card in public high foot traffic locations. We all are blessed with a talent, some people are born with multiple talents. Some people live ,never realizing their talent,or simply never putting the time and effort into fully developing that talent. Love Your Talents People!
awesome!!
Thanks so much for posting these, Ms. Molly!
Shocking there has never been a Vaughn Bode biopic. Crispin Glover could play him well.
He's basically Marc Bolan as a comic book artist!
Yup. Just look a some of the publicity photos he looks like a 70s rock star so cool!
This is such a wonderful primary source.
Fantastic to hear his voice, see him draw - amazing.
Thank you thank you thank you for posting this valuable documentation!
Oh, thanks to Sigmund Humanski too!
Was a child prodigy as a child creating his own world that he also lived in .i think he saw the future of what was gonna happen in 70s new york on the tracks and created cheech so he could live for ever coz i personaly think hes knew he was going to cheech land at an early age r.i.p best artist ever his lines are the best so smooth and flowing thats the real reason dondi use that panel .
wish i got to meet him. my best friend was the rookie cop that found him, it was his first...
amazing footage and insight!
amazin a tru genius
There is a crowdfunding to publish a new edition of "Das Kampf", on KissKissBankBank.
The Black Cauldron is a testament to how with it Disney Studios is. wink*
beatiful!
In the 21st century Disney Corporation finally reveal their aptitude and temperament: HACKS.
Utica in the 70s: Ed Hanna, Tape Utopia and Vaughn Bode, who led us to the National Lampoon, and the Radio Hour on 'OUR: Chase, Belushi, O'Donaghue, Subitsky, Doyle-Murray. VB hung himself, more or less, we heard. And Cheech became the progenitor of acceptable vandalism. Who knew such foolishness would ever be remembered? God bless Annette Funicello, Dave Cash, Val Bailas and the days of our misspent youth.
RT. WAZ HERE, 2020 💙❤💜💚
Vaugn Bode and who??? The master talks. this is so great, hold your rights Cheech!
bode is da bomb!
Bode is king......
@leesagrrl
thnx saw that Cobalt 60 page for $1800. An orig Cheech wiz page must be ridiculous but I think its definitely worth it to be able to say "I have an orig BODE on my wall" AHHH!
Like Vaughn Bode, I'm a Cheech Wizard. Never quittin', so won't you listen?
-Sure Shot / Beastie Boys
Year before he died
❤🤩🤩🤩
His death was due to autoerotic asphyxiation at age 33. That's pretty weird
6 people a week die from it. Not that weird really.
Was he strictly an illustrator? Did he experiment with animation?
Amazing
where can i get an original vaughn bode from????
Ahhh.. A famous Vaughn. Its been an odd name to have all these years
the real godfather of graffiti
Full stop...king bode for ever

Have a great day!
Your best bet would be eBay.
Thanks for uploading these videos, Molly, by the way. You can't know just how fantastic it is to be able to see and hear "da Bode" when all you could do until now is suppose what he lust have been like. It's awesome.
He always reminded me of Marc Bolan. Can you imagine what he would do with graffiti?
I no mind blowing...💥💥💥
Check those long nails.
He was groomed by Jeff jones.
@genkijin
Vaughn was a seriously talented fella. Some of my favorite 60's Artists have had such serious accidents... Vaughn and Rick Griffin were two of the best.
@genkijin
