Lincoln "coming in second doesn't matter" lol Another great game guys, thank you so much for your time. I've owned this game for awhile (shelf of shame) and you've spurred me to get it out (and also to learn about the actual favelas).
Thanks for showing us the game! I think it needs one more dimension to thinking... like having numbers on the tiles and points deducted if the adjacent numbers are off by more than one. Something like that to add more spice.
I wonder if this game would have benefited from a change in the rotation after every round. Would that change the gameplay at all or the kingmaker vibe that Dave described?
hey link, nice shirt! regarding this game...I remember playing a while ago and was very disappointed. It's a light game, which is fine, but for an abstract it just falls flat and quickly felt samey. After a couple plays I was done playing that game and I would see no reason to pick this over other of its category. There are so many light, medium weight abstracts with tile placement mechanisms that are much more tactical, and fun. The decisions in this game I found were pretty simple, not much too think and never felt it was joyful. Overall, this was just utterly boring.
I totally understand where you are coming from. Dave wasn't sure it was for him. I've played it since we filmed this and it strengthened what I like about the game which I started talking about in the video but got distracted. I really like that you have bad choices to deal with and it forces you to pay attention what is happening with the other players to craft your strategy with what is available to you. As we said in the video, you often do not want to take a tile and disrupt your district. I really think I will enjoy the game even more with further plays. Thanks for the note and for watching.
Lincoln Damerst I get what your saying. I just think the choices are minimal. Sure you have to pay attention to the dice and change numbers (take tiles) to lower opponent's scores or benefit you, but I just didnt' feel that choices were engaging or fun enough. Plus, I found no appeal in the theme. But tastes are subjective so to each it's own. I think I liked Isle of the Skye way more than you guys did for what I recall from that video!. Great video nevertheless and happy gaming.
Beautification? Hmm... It would be better if the game was about giving water, electricity, gas, real security, infrastructure and all kinds of basic services that are actually needed in the favelas of Rio. I don't find very amusing the idea of poverty beautification as a boardgame concept. Perhaps the mechanics are good, but really bad choice of theme. Dont get me wrong, I belive Social problems could be a great theme for boardgames, as long as they bring awareness or some kind of afterthought to it. Perhaps this game would encourage some people to "google favela" as Dave says at the beggining, idk. BTW just a very little porcentage of Rio's favelas are this colorfull... I love the show, just giving some respectful piece of my mind to it, im not blameing or or trying to build shame on anyone.
Fran Soria I find the setting very weird, too (and potentially insensitive). A game on favelas that is just about the colours of the ‘houses’ (which sometimes resemble more of a slum hut than a nice semi-detached house) and with the idea of a council that has its focus on the beauty of the favela feels so ‘off’ when you know about the real favelas. I, too, know that the game designer surely didn’t want to offend anybody, but still it’s clear that if they (the designers) had lived in a favela for a year, they surely wouldn’t have picked that setting.
To me this looks like one of the worst games ever played on the channel. And sure, the whole beatification of houses that were built from garbage and have no electricity or water just shows IQ of the designer (or potentially someone at WizKids if they were the one who chose the theme), but I am not a snowflake in general. For example I oppose calling slaves "assistants" as it was done in one of the videos. But the game itself, the mechanics of the game, are just... bad. This is a bad game. I am not sure why no game ever can be just called for what it is. Every game has to be enjoyable, interesting, great.
Watching you guys play makes my day. I'm definitely getting this one.

It'll be hard to get this game played in Rio de Janeiro.
37:45 "...an upping of the yellow" -- Why does that sound like some sort of ceremony at Buckingham Palace?
Never heard of this one, thanks folks!
Wow that would be too frustrating for me to play. Thanks for a great play through :o)

16:57 I think you forgot to edit that one out haha! I was confused when Dave said game end and then it was funny when you told him to flip it again =)

Wonder how the game would play at a lower player count. I'm interested in playing this one. Thanks for the playthrough & retrospective.
Just played a 2p. Not bad. Can be more cutthroat since we can easily block each other.
I wonder if this would be better at 2 or 3. A bit more predictable.
Seems like everyone agrees there is a bit of runaway leader issue.
Please please play wildlands gonna be massive this xmas
That looked like agonizing/interesting decisions/choices in all the wrong ways.

When the year end tile is drawn, isn't the player suppose to place it on their board ???
Nope. Round ends immediately.
Why did Dave discard the first three tiles before starting???
You don't use them all and he gets those from off camera so they were never in one of the three stacks
Who knew Rusty was a BlueBlazers Regular?!
Did anyone else hear crows cawing in the background?
I sure did.
😂
If it can't lay flat, then you can't place that!
Too funny on the start player rule.
Another game where everyone but Rusty won.

Calm your tits, it's a game.
Yes. I'm brazilian and this was my first tought when I saw this game. Those houses only look "beautiful" on the outside, inside, it's poverty.

Thxs for saving me from buying this one.
