hello mr skinner. i enjoy all of your documentary films very good job very well done. i grew up being told by my dad leon dee wright born 1936 washinton county ar. died 2014 houston tx. that i am related to jesse and frank james . great job on all your documentarys especialy on the civil war. jimmy wright
Thank you sir yes I do good people all. You make the best documentary films all of them . Some others are good but yours are the best. I always enjoy watching them. Thank you for them
My grandfather was born in May of 1871. His family were farmers living out in the country in Tippah County. Grandfather would have been 3 and a half at the time of the Tishomingo Bank robbery. A group of men rode up in at the farm one evening and asked if they could spend the night. They were allowed to. The next morning they left a coin for each of the children and paid for their food. Days later the family heard about the bank robbery. Granddaddy was sure they had been the bank robbers.
Well done and fascinating story. I suspect there is much more to the affair. The banker, from New York, wonder did he come before or after The War? Did he foreclose on ex-Confederates, etc. Possibly not. Would love to research it if I found the time, should be easy to do. Would make a great book...
I'm FROM Memphis but was living in Ocean Springs MS with my Uncle and doing Home remodeling & Siding work with him in the 1970s. We got a job for a picture window in an OLD house down there one time. We take a chainsaw and start cutting the frames out to box the window. White cloth and colored money starts flying out of the wall where the chainsaw is cutting. We didn't know what we had hit so we pulled the boards back from the wall. Uncle found ALOT of old Confederate money bills that had been hidden in that wall. Probably since the Civil War. That lady said he could have it and as far as I know he has all the bills in a book. When the Yankee Army raided the Mississippi towns folks would hide their items and I guess that was where someone hid theirs too!! :) Take care-Herb
The Jesse James story told to me by my Gr. Aunt Bertie Johnson. Jesse James stayed at my gr,gr grandfather Rufus Pierce Johnson's house on his farm outside of Corinth When Jesse robbed the bank in Corinth, Mississippi. They entered their horses in a horse race as not to draw suspicion. Jesse asked Rufus how much he owed him and he told him nothing, so they left some gold pieces under their plates before leaving. One of the older sons of Rufus helped him escape through the swamps. This robbery took place on December 7, 1874. There is a book named: Attributed to the James Gang, by Jeffery Burton and The English Westerner's Brand Book,v.6, no.4, (April 1964) pages 1-11, that tells about this bank robbery. I found out I am related to Jesse James on my dad's side
It’s interesting how this was supposedly Jessie‘s gang and so professional. But this same gang was so clumsy and even drunk at the Northfield, Minnesota band robbery. Witch pretty much destroyed the gang, Jesse and his brother also being the only ones who escaped.
I did commercial electrical in just about every town in the South. Also been in Wyoming and Montana. It is amazing how close to history I been at times. Did not even know it. Been in Corinth Ms. many times.
You sound like you do the voice over in just one take, and I've complemented your voice a few times. I enjoy it and the history lessons. I've been going back to watch your older stuff and like it. The kids would call it binge watching. I like to see you are getting recent traffic on older videos.
I think we're close to the same age, if Jerry Mather as the Beaver is your age then we're the same. You have a smooth southern voice I like hearing, and being a history major from William and Mary getting to hear stuff that wasn't included is always a plus.
I understand. You were in my part of the country back then. I pass places all the time with interesting past and i never new until years later. Thank you Michael and stay in touch. Jerry
An old farm that I grew up on had the distinction of once having the James brothers there for dinner as they passed through the area. I get the impression they were considered heroes. We weren't too far from some caves where they supposedly hid loot.
Ozark mama My dad and I heard the same story from my grandfather about a farm around the Audrain County area. They spent the night in the barn. The farmers wife fed them. The mysterious riders gave the farmer a 100.00 gold piece the next morning and said the farmer was just visited by Frank and Jesse James.
Ozark mama Yes The James gang were suppose to have hidden alot of money somewhere, I only wish I knew where! Someone will uncover it someday, if it hasnt already been found. Which is likely. Even during that time. Wouldnt it be nice to find it, for historical value. One couldn't spend it, now if a person did find it.way too old. There would be too many questions? But I dont think the James boys were that bad.
At one time Rankin Print Shop occupied the building, and I remember people use to point out a bullet hole in the front that was supposed to come from one of the robbers. At some time in the 50's, The Daily Corinthian newspaper, ran an article about the holdup and had a picture of someone pointing out the bullet hole. And by the way, I am from Corinth, and we did pronounce it 'Carinth" (more of an "a" sound), but people from up North pronounced it the greek way (withthe "o" sound)
Thank you Richard and you are correct. When i here someone pronounce it with the "A" sound. I always say to myself, that person has not been here very long. But i know they are correct. Thank you again Richard. Jerry
WOW ! from the comment section we find that they stayed at multiple places every night . and every ancestor in North Mississippi and West Tennessee knew them well , and … well , just wow .
The night of the robbery they stayed at my Great Great Grandparent's home. It is located in northeastern union county close to the Mt. Zion Methodist Church. Close to the intersection of county road 164 and 227. BTW It's not visible from the road. When I was about 16 (55 now). I visited the home. It is an old log cabin with a double back to back fireplace. It was still in nice condition considering. The old barn was a log cabin type too and that is where they spent the night. Me, my Dad, and my maternal Grandfather searched the place with a metal detector. We didn't find much mainly because we didn't know how to properly use the detector. Did find an old railroad token though. My Great Great Grandfather was Robert Adair one of the founders of the Mt. Zion Church.

I just love your history videos. if you're daughter helps you she is a saint. I just love history and all these extra goodies make it so special. your voice is sing sang, so it sounds extra good. if there is anyway I can help fund your episodes let me know. God bless.
I lived in Memphis from Jan 79 to Aug 83, age 6.5-11. My mom was raised in Memphis. A great aunt on my mom's side lived in Corinth and we went down a couple of times per year to visit. Most ppl pronounced it Car-inth, as did we. I remember it being kind of interesting, although we didn't do a lot of sight-seeing. The great aunt died before we moved back to CA. My adult cousin was murdered a few years later, i think in a robbery. Someday i will go back for a visit, because the only Civil War site i have ever been to is Shiloh. I enjoy your videos, and i like the Southern connections in them. I didn't know the James-Younger Gang made it that far east and south.
About all we know for sure is that it wasn’t the horses that robbed the bank and I’m not all that sure of that. Loved the video Jerry! It shows that like today eye witnesses are very unreliable. Thank you and keep the the videos coming!
I just watched a good movie Jerry. The LONG RIDERS"--the story of the James-Younger gang. Made in 1980 and has a lot of good stuff in there. Check it out if you get a chance. Stacy Keech/David Caradine & Randy Quaid star in it. Herb :)
Just for the record, I don't give a damn how you pronounce Corinth. You can call it anything you want, I just came here for the video content and to get edumacated!!
SignalRunner Hummm I've lived here, within 10 miles of Corinth, all my life and that's what we have always called it. Kinda disappointing to find out we have been wrong all these years. ha ha
Corinth (Greek Κόρινθος, Kórinthos) Common misconception, as if to use the same pronunciation as 'The Daily Corinthian' just taking the "ian" off of the end. Using emphases on the letter I before the N instead of the O before the R.

Where is that?
The southwestern part of Franklin County Mo.

I suspect that if it were the James-Younger gang, it was because the banker was from NY.

His gang and the Dalton gang robbed the bank in my hometown of Silver Creek, MS and they made a movie about it in the 50’s.
What happened to " Ray Wall who so- shot down", or "Ray Wall Jr" who so- vanished
About all we know for sure is that it wasn’t the horses that robbed the bank and I’m not all that sure of that. Loved the video Jerry! It shows that like today eye witnesses are very unreliable. Thank you and keep the the videos coming!

Geoff Jacobs I’ve lived in Mississippi for fifty years. That’s the only way I’ve ever heard it pronounced.
I enjoyed this so. I'd always heard that Jesse robbed the bank, but never knew the details. Please keep making these videos.
mis-pronunciation of 'Corinth'

SignalRunner is absolutely correct, and anyone who speaks proper English would also know this.
cottersay Thank you for correcting the pronunciation of Corinth. I have lived in the area for sixty years. Jerry
Jerry Skinner And thank you for being such a gentleman, Jerry, and for making such an interesting video.
