Lovely story, and a brilliant demonstration of blade shearing. Keeping one's traditions alive in the current times is nothing short of noble. I salute you, sir, and wish you all the best. Regards from Bulgaria.

I've seen current day sheering and I know the process of back in the day blade sheering but somehow had it in my head it'd take ages to sheer sheep by balde. Clearly good and speedy sheering has everything to do with skill an experience. It's amazing to see

Gareth, another use for the dags in your garden - wool bits also tend to repel slugs from various ornamental plants like hostas (Monty Don even mentioned wool and wool pellets as a pesticide free slug repellent). Wool is amazing, and it’s practically criminal how little most farmers get from the Wool Board, for such an amazing product. The wool hats sound fantastic!

Like you, I use the wool dags in my allotment. Local wine producer Gwinllan Conwy used wool around their vines to control pests and weeds. Search their Facebook page for the video

Apart from spinning, knitting or weaving it and using it as fertilizer, we also use it to protect young trees from being eaten by game. Works wonders! I am a novice at shearing and am very impressed by Garth. It looks so easy!! Congratulations to your VERY well behaved JRT, by the way. Thumbs up from Germany.

Very calm and trusting sheep there. Back in the day in school in Somerset we collected wool from the hedgerows and fences - then carded it, spun it, and weaved it by hand. Making Welsh woollen hats clearly takes a production line approach with some proper tools...

Wool in the USA is still a high dollar recovery for the farmer. But I’m opting to take and clean the wool and use it in my old farm house for insulation, in the garden for weeds and fertilizer and then sending off only the premium wool for processing. There i a great small buyer cottage industry for specific wool yarn and roving. I love my sheep and they take care of me!

Thanks for the demonstration! Welsh from Llanelli, but living in Canada. I just got some Icelandics and cheaped out with hand shears, so at least I have an idea what I'm doing now 😅 Good idea with the dags, I'll make sure to save some for that.

I want to come to Wales! It is on my "someday list". When we're all a little less poor. $$ Your farm looks like a great place to come and see the country for sure.
My husband's family is Welsh, and a bit English I'm sure. The emigrated around end of WWII to America. Gareth, have you ever heard of a type of Christian church called Welsh Baptist. I don't know what they would call them there in Wales or in the old tongue but he says the closest is "that that baptize" or "those who are baptized". But he says the bible he had as a kid was different than the American Baptist bible their church uses now... I wouldn't know, I'm Catholic, hahaha... but I sure would love to surprise him with a bit of his ancestral history.
But if you or any of the travel folks that know Welsh history real well read this, I would love some input to be able to put a trip together "to the old land" haha. I heard tell of a church there in Wales that is in a valley surrounded by mountains and the church and the faith there are very old. Like 1st and 2nd century AD kind of old. There is a church I hear of his pastor from 2-3 generations before us told about a tile or mosaic style floor with the compass inlaid into it with North, South, East, West... you know? I fear I could have no way of finding this kind of place, even using the internet, what are the chances? But maybe someone back there in Wales knows a thing or two?
    Thanks,
    Lovely wool you've got there.

Normally their tails are docked to avoid fly strike. But that doesn't seem to he an issue for this sheep.
