- On 22 August 1984, Arthur Scargill, President of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), faced off against chairman of the National Coal Board (NCB), Ian MacGregor, in a live televised debate moderated by ITN's Peter Sissons. With the miners' strike in its fifth month, Scargill and MacGregor were called on to state their respective cases as leading opponents in the UK-wide industrial dispute. In doing so, the pair summarised the fight for Britain's future that was being played out on picket lines across the country.
