Dude I can’t tell you how on time you are. I’m currently starting with hema and your videos on gear and endurance training are extremely helpful. I wanted to thank you for making these videos I greatly appreciate you ❤
If at all possible, try on HEMA gloves that other fencers use before you buy. Finding the right glove for you is very difficult, as its always a balance between protection and dexterity.
I have always hated clamshells for that reason. A guy in my club just bought the Gabriels 5 finger, and I'm in love with them. Too bad I don't have an extra $350 sitting around.
I got something very similar (SPES Full Thumb Heavy Gloves) and can confirm, it's extreeeemely important to protect your hands. I began sparring 1.5 years ago and went through so much junk before landing on my current setup: began with motorcycle leather gloves (ouch). Moved on thinking "hey, combine fun look and protection", got metal plate gloves. Cheap ones first, had huge gaps, took lots of thumb and wrist hits. Ouch again. Moved on to better, fully covering metal plate gloves: protection good, the 150-200 euro models I got sadly both suffered from the leather inlay (sowed on glove) getting torn. More LARP accessory than real protection I found... I guess it's possible to get really high quality metal that also functions well but I went for the above mentioned ones and that's just the best option: go for sports gear when doing sports is my take-away. Also: protect your hands. And head. And joints. Probably your chest too. Oh and groin if you face a spear I learned. From almost gelding my friend.
One of our instructors is a surgeons assistant(so one of the things he needs to do is sew up peoples insides) and these are what he has. He loves them and for someone who makes their money based on fine motor skills he cant recomend them enough.
These are great! My only issue is that sometimes I can't tell if I received a hit to the hand in them. You can buy them from Purple Heart or directly from HF Armory.
Adding to this, if you're based in America, try a reseller like Purple Heart first because they generally have good stocks. If you order from HF directly, they pretty much manufacture them for you which takes forever (and it will be very expensive since they come all the way from Ukraine). I received mine in Denmark after almost 6 months.
Depending on the weight of the saber, you can probably go lighter. These will absolutely protect you but they're rather pricy and probably lack the dexterity you'd like for a lightsaber
I can’t stress this enough, NEVER SKIMP ON HAND PROTECTION IN HEMA! And if these are out of stock the Purple Heart armory’s new “spevies” are pretty good
I had a couple swords in high school and me and my friends used to always spar with them. A part of gauntlets like these would have saved us many a cuts on our hands
@@Kirk9019 I mean it’s probably one of the least dangerous stupid things I did as a teen😂 worst that could happen is that we get a little cut or a small stab wound.
I bought these and I agree that they have good flexibility and protect well. Mine had some durability problems and broke after 5-6 sparring sessions. The middle thumb piece came of. The cord that the plates are connected with also widened where the studs connect, so the hole thing hangs loose. Very unfortunate. I had spes lobsterd before and they broke at the thumb but the held for a couple of years. The HF ones are the more nimble of the two and I prefer to fence with but I wish they held longer. It is probably fixable thought if I get wider studs.
I use them atm. After trying Spes Lobster, Sparring Gloves Hourglass Mittens and even ProGauntlets, I am sure they are very good and durable. Not to heavy and very protective.
I don't know of you have cover it already, but I would like to know your opinion on viking swords. I like bladed and blunt weapon or anything that got to do with old times. I came across your channel and I really enjoy it. Keep up the amazing work
when my partner and I got started we were studying spear. We got actual gauntlets from Steel Mastery out of Ukraine. They barely made it through customs before the war started. was kinda concerned that they weren't going to make it. very heavy
I bought them after trying various version of SPES lobster. They're much better and movable than SPES gloves but they take forever to be manufactured and shipped (maybe because of the Ukraine situation). Overall they're amazing but they have some minor defects to be aware of: - The inside is dyed black but the colour comes off very easily so if you don't use undergloves, your hands will look like those of a mechanics (and it takes a while to wash off). This is the worst defect by far. - The thumb is well protected, yes, but it's a bit bulky and get stuck in the crossguard often so you'll have to work with them to get used to it and learn how to avoid that. Still much easier to get used to this than to be unable to cross your hands like with the SPES gloves. - The wrists are basically open so be careful not expose them to your opponent. I personally never had problems, but it's something I am careful about. - The plastic is stitched to the undergloves with rather thin thread. So far mine still hold but some threads have already come off after 6 months. - Because the forearm part is rigid, sometimes it can be a bit difficult to handle the sword in kind of flowering motion because you will have a rigid piece of plastic between your forearm and your wrist blocking your range of motion. Again, this can be a problem only in drills or if you have a very fancy style, for most longsword proper fencing, it won't be that much of a problem.
When i started practicing with a few friends we just wpre face protection amd used wooden swords. What could go wrong? Well one day one of my buddies swinged his sword and smacked me so hard in the thumb that my nail cracked in 2. Never again.... from that day i always wear hand protection
Can you make a video about mensur? It's a form of traditional german fencing practiced in some german fraternitys. I would like to know what you think about.
kydex guants like that have been around since the early 1990s... how are they for fencer manipulations? I had students use them in the bohurt world before switching over to steel..
the only problem is how wide the thumbs are, it makes moving through and switching into different thumb grips extremely awkward in my opinion. your mileage may vary
I've yet to have a good experience with plastic- too many broken thumbs from the SPES version, and too little mobility even when compared to my Milanese gauntlets. One of the guys in the local German group gets better mobility from his gothic gauntlets than the plastic. It's $100 more to get tempered spring steel custom fit to your hand which is built to survive Battle of Nations.
I don't find $200 to be affordable. I can barely afford food. I'm usually broke by time I pay my rent and bills. For those who say to get a better job, I am trying. I have been turned down by ten jobs already because of my issues with staying focused.
Any recommendations for a pair of gauntlets that you can use to just punch someone or something really hard? I’ve been wanting to make caestus for a while but I’m lazy and just wanna buy some now.
If only they would ever be in stock for more than 10 minutes ;_;
Check Kvetun Xiphosura then, pretty much the same, they fixed the fingers pulling fabric away from shell as well.
Pretty well tells the tale on how good they are.

I mean, I feel like I had better range of motion in the thumb with my SPES Heavies than in the Gabriels, and I care about that way more in longsword.
Wait are you saying I SHOULDN'T be fencing in 15 year old hockey gloves held together with misplaced hope and cloth tape?
Wait,so i shouldnt use my cardboard box gloves held by tape, napkins and hope in an active cartel shooting clash? damn
So he’s saying that my latex examination gloves seriously aren’t enough?

IMO if you're going for actual metal gauntlets, it's best to have impressions made of your hands and get an armourer to make you a custom pair.

You know what? I'm tired of getting hit in the hands for my lightsaber combat. I was thinking about picking up a set of these from PurpleHeart.
Depending on the weight of the saber, you can probably go lighter. These will absolutely protect you but they're rather pricy and probably lack the dexterity you'd like for a lightsaber
Hollow plastic tube < solid metal sword
Suck it up, wimp 😂
Also, if you wanna duel someone, you can just throw a gauntlet in his face, and that will be the end of the duel.
Bro found these in kiln of the first flame
the droprate when u defeat him is quite low tho
Tjumb injury is suuuuch a ever present threat in medieval combat sports.
For the foamy bois/theys/girls:
Lacross gloves 👍
Those are some great clamshells, my ones end up with a massive gap betweem the hand and thumb, been hit in the index finger just too many times.

You sparred with SHARPS???? Thats pretty unwise, even for teenagers 😅

If your sword breaks or is lost, you can also use them to beat the shit out of your opponents in the Myke Tyson style
Have a pair of these gloves. Absolutely love them.
Very good to know. If I ever get more into it I'll make sure to get a pair.

Noted. Circumstances have changed recently and there's finally a HEMA club I can go to.
When you do glove reviews can you mention whether or not you can do a thumbs up. Thats a must for me.
Those look gorgeous too

Ah, nice. I asked about them in another video. They look pretty protective, very much like the new spes heavy, but with the extra finger protection
I use them atm. After trying Spes Lobster, Sparring Gloves Hourglass Mittens and even ProGauntlets, I am sure they are very good and durable. Not to heavy and very protective.

Definitely heard of a few people getting broken fingers cuz of that, these a absolutely a good idea ❤
Man got them larry the lobster gloves
I JUST REALIZED HE HAS HEBREW ON HIS ARM I’m Jewish that’s so cool
when my partner and I got started we were studying spear. We got actual gauntlets from Steel Mastery out of Ukraine. They barely made it through customs before the war started. was kinda concerned that they weren't going to make it.
very heavy
They look sick as hell, too. Like someone crafted them from Garthim parts.
HEMA gloves look so much like boxing gloves and now I wanna get a pair

Plus, they allow you to perform the Pillbug Punch.
Oh thats neat *attacks with a warhammer*
Those look really good. Imo, the highest quality piece of safety gear you own should be your helmet, and then your gloves.
Fun fact! This Springfield Armory has only been in existence and business since 1974.
The forbidden Boxing glove

Should work perfectly for my rapier.
Hey random question. Do these gloves support a handshake grip?
Can you make a video about mensur? It's a form of traditional german fencing practiced in some german fraternitys. I would like to know what you think about.
Weird i read about that yesterday for some reason.
Imagine going into a boxing ring and someone wore these gloves
Assassin's hoodie is missing... I like the pirate captain outfit
I also recommend them
I want to see a boxing match with those
Could you show case more parts of fencing armor like this?
Bro is ready for the walking dead
Asking other people in the comments. As someone who wants to get into HEMA but hasn't started yet. What do you need to start?
I would recommend using it in boxing
I think we are going to be seeing a lot of people cosplaying as black lobsters pretty soon.
I’d bet many people lost fingers and hands back in the day very frequently
i close my eyes and hear Fry from futurama

CRAB EVOLUTION!!
They look like the Lionel's gloves in Eldenring
Those like nice!
Question: Would they fit with a sword that has a complex hilt like a Rapier?
It's like wearing two armadillos
Where do you get your swords and other weapons?
Also adds extra damage if you don't do HEMA
Best on the market
kydex guants like that have been around since the early 1990s... how are they for fencer manipulations? I had students use them in the bohurt world before switching over to steel..
It looks like Elden Ring melee gloves to fight using them solo. (And potentially naked)
they would be great for zombie fighting
Aggressive boxing gloves
You know that one punch man vid from elden ring
Toys, get bigger, and more expensive, the older you get 😅
Highly recommended by Rocky Balboa
When I first saw those gloves they looks like they sacrificed grip strength for protection but doesn’t look that way anymore
i got spes lobsters, they are very similar, but they work great. curious doe, what intermediate gloves do you recommend for sidesword/sabre?
the only problem is how wide the thumbs are, it makes moving through and switching into different thumb grips extremely awkward in my opinion. your mileage may vary

TIS BUT A SCRATCH
how much monverabilty do they have. I do mainly Kali and need good flow of movement. I normally use lacrosse gloves.

I mean, hema is an expensive sport so relatively affordable, ig
What's your opinion on the Gabriel 5 finger gloves that purple heart sell?
Those gloves appear to be a melee weapon in and of themselves.
Any recommendations for a pair of gauntlets that you can use to just punch someone or something really hard? I’ve been wanting to make caestus for a while but I’m lazy and just wanna buy some now.

They kinda look like boxing gloves, but metal
Yes, but it reminds me of a crab every time that I use them
Can they be used in a more complicated guard like a rapier or something with more material like a saber or something
Depends on the guard but usually you'd use a different, lighter type of glove.
"Tis but a scratch"
Great gloves for eating a couple of burgers or tacos soaked in sauce.😉🎉
This gloves are like Lionel gloves amor set (elden ring)

Also known as the Lionel armor set. Now waiting for the breastplate and helmet. 😀

Looks like boxing gloves, guess i can use them like that
