Good vid. May I second you on "Read the stamping on the barrel?" Some time ago I bought a gun which I understood to be a 44-40. I spent quite a while finding cartridges for it, and was thinking I'd most likely have to get into hand loading to feed it. Finally got it out the range and found 2 things. 1) it was very inaccurate, and 2) it jammed a lot. Took it to a more knowledgeable friend of mine, who was thinking the jams were maybe some roughness on the chamber walls. We examined the spend casings and what was wrong occurred to us at the same moment. A check of the barrel stampings revealed that it was a .44, not a 44-40.It chambered fine, but when fired the necked down 44-40 case was getting flattened out against the .44 chamber walls, making it stick. And the undersized round was bouncing down the barrel a bit, causing the inaccuracy. No harm was caused, but it was sure embarrassing to realize I could be so negligent.
@@weaniebeaniebur5725 it's more then the case the bullets are different diameter also. 8mm mauser being .323 in diameter and .308 being well it's in the name lol. Stuff a 8mm in a .308 and if for some reason it chambered even well now you've got a bullet much to big for the barrel trying to squeeze it's fat body down it.
@@LavitosExodius true, but im just talking the case. Always make sure your using the correct diameter bullets when reloading. Im just saying a 30-06 case works well for reloading if you take the right steps to prep it.
@@joeybanana839 .308 is .308 as is 7.62 nato. Unless you want to measure in mms then yes their both 7.82 mm. Unless your talking Russian 7.62 which can be .309 to .312
I always tell people to stay with factory guns and factory ammo, and if you reload?, only shoot your reloads. I don't trust other people's reloads. Short story, I once picked up a live round off the ground at a shooting range and fired it in my S&W model 15, I had to tap the cylinder out with a plastic hammer, and later I learned that the frame of the gun had been Stretched!!!. I got the gun back to where it would work but it never was the same ): I filed this under Mistakes I Have Made, it's a pretty large file too ): ?
This reminds me of a story I read on Gunboards, a guy was shooting his SVT and a mosin shooter offered him some ammo. The guy didn't know what issue could be had and so he did so. Both guns shoot the same ammo and so he thought it should be fine. Well, that round blew the gas well off the barrel, sent the bolt back with such force that it cracked the bolt carrier and bent back the metal of the area of the bolt carrier slides on. Moral of the story, don't trust foreign reloads.
My dad bought reloads at a gun show and the projectiles were getting stuck partway down the barrel. Scary stuff. Now that is what will make a gun explode and blow your fingers off.
When in doubt, I went to my local gun/hunting store, asked their gunsmith what would you recommend for ammo for this firearm? Then I went onto the gun manufacturer's website and sent an e-mail to their techs and matched the imfo. Nothing against your fav RUclips celeb but get this kind of imfo from the people who make the ammo, and firearms. hickok45 even said it, ask your local hunting/firearm store or better yet a local certified gunsmith. Thumbs up for this vid. m/ ;)
Great video. One of the most important bits of information on firearms and shooting. I remember in my gun safety course when I was a kid they taught us about the dreaded 12-20 double fire. When 20 gauge shell gets mixed up with a 12 gauge shells. The 20 is small enough to slide into the barrel just past the chamber and then a 12 gauge gets loaded on top of it and when fired the gun barrel detonates. Several other scenarios where the wrong ammo is used and the end result is injury or death to the shooter. I really appreciate the old school good advice you give to young shooters.
+ArtisanTony ... When I was a young'n, I took an NRA hunter safety course. The teacher was a Fish 'n Game employee, but also a member of the NRA. He wore his government uniform. ...... Plus, he had a table full of mostly rifles that had busted apart, when people used the wrong ammunition, or clogged the barrel with mud. A couple of the shotguns, had barrels, that were NOT only split apart, but also had a few squiggles in the steel barrels. ...... The NRA teacher said, most of the accidents occurred because the men were hunting with John BarleyCorn. (A famous man back in the hills of Tennessee.)
+Star Kicker >Sing that song back in the hills of Tennessee, and a man could become a 'flavoring' added to the mash cooking in a big copper kettle. (Though now days, the mash might be cooked in those big 55 gallon barrels originally containing 'hog-feed.' And, yes stainless steel is better, but the Iron Rust is good for the red blood cells, maybe.)
Great video and a very important one. I know when I got my first 9mm, 9mm Parabellum, 9mm Luger, 9mm Makarov confused me to no end and really forced me to read up on what rounds I could actually use in my 9mm. Another big one is the +P rounds. They are nearly identical to normal rounds but are more powerful and if you load them in a non +P chambered handgun they will fire but you could get hurt or worse.
@hickok45 I apologize if I have missed it, but do you have a video on different types of cartridges cases (brass, steel, aluminum)? If not, I think it is something worth pointing out.
Hickok, thank you for a no-frills explanation on caliber and the consequences of recklessly experimenting with cartridges. I cannot tell you how many times I have had this very same conversation with customers at my store.
Good video! About the .38 special into .357 magnum revolver that works fine, don't fire a .357 mag thru a .38 spec for the power factor (might not fit). Be aware of +P ratings of your gun too. Maybe a small video on the +P world might be a good follow up! I can't help but wonder if this ammo shortage hasn't made shooters searching for other cheaper options in ammo?
I once went to the range to shoot my beautiful old Steyr SL in .222 Rem Magnum. I shot twice and felt that something wasn't quite right, but I wasn't sure what it was. I load both .223, and .222 Rem Mag. cartridges, and was putting them in the same blue ammo boxes. Even though they were clearly labeled as .223 for my AR's, I just grabbed the wrong ones. The two extracted cases had almost no neck. I was tremendously embarrassed and felt very lucky that I hadn't damaged myself or the rifle. After that stupid move, I bought red cases for the Magnums, and haven't come close to making the same mistake again. I think (and cringe) about it every time I reload, and I keep those two cases on my loading bench to be a constant reminder.
Nice PSA!...I can see all those questions have cost you a bit of sleep, a nice treatment of a subject that is at once a complicated and also a simple one.
Hey Hickock! New Zealand shooter here. Our military use the Styer AUG. Can you do a video showing your entire collection? Maybe a part 2 where you fire your favorites. Love the channel!
Great video, thanks for making this. Newcomers like myself might not have known to check the barrel for the exact round your weapon is chambered in (I know I didn't). Keep up the great work!
This is a good video! My Local stores including gun stores as well as larger sporting goods stores both do not do good training for the staff who sells the guns- ive found that they never show you how to operate the gun, or show you basics such as loading and unloading it as well as ever discussing the ammo- ive purchased several guns both used and new and not once have i had a salesman even attempt to give me basic education. I had this issue with a classic Winchester lever action thats 30 30. And i nearly purchased 30-06 thinking it would work- and im now also dealing with this becasue i got a Ubertti colt clone thats a .45 and im wondering if i can use 45 long colt- and im wondering if 200 or slightly over 200 grain is too hot for it or can it handle it- i hate that there is a lack of educated salespeople as well as poorly illustrated operation manuals which seem to not discuss this subject of different ammo and especially the grain strength of the ammo the gun is designed for.
Wow, this is giving me heartburn right now. I just picked up a 1920 Colt 38 Police Positive and am having grave doubts as to whether it's made for 38 Special, 38 Long Colt or maybe Short Colt, or 38 Smith and Wesson. It just says 38 on the barrel. And I can't find any of these at a LGS (except Special, of course) to just try chambering a round. Thanks, Colt.
Thank you for that video! Even though I’m in the military, I’m only limited to what we weapons-qual in our inventory. 5.56, 7.62, 9mm, 12 gage shotguns, .50 cal and 40mm grenade launchers. Still learning every day. 🇺🇸
Thanks for another great video. Went to WalMart the other day and asked for .357 Mag the guy gave me .357 sig. I opened the box to see the brass because I reload and discovered that was the wrong round. Beware of salesman who do not know guns!!!!!!
U actually made it as far as opening the box?? I dont care where Im buying ammo or whos selling it to me, the first thing I do is look at the box to make sure they actually handed me what I asked for. Then I open at least one of the boxes just to make sure visually. Even small differences, like if its WW 115gr when I asked for 147gr(my carry ammo). Hollow points vs ball. Brass vs aluminum case. A lot of ammo manufacturers' use identical looking boxes with the only difference being whats type printed regarding bullet weight and type and case material.
WHAT WOULD WE DO WITHOUT YOU GUYS...U do safety on guns, education and reviews,,,,u do funny stuff and serious things...you are needed on U-Tube as we need air to breath and dark beer to drink!! Love ya guys!!
+PJ MasterDiddy yeah I know, I own a judge. I was just being annoying 😁. Can't believe how many people have used incorrect ammo in their firearms. The number of people that don't thoroughly clean their guns also astounds me
Ronald Reagan used a variation of that quote as well. "Well, the trouble with our liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so.”
+Fhilip79 I could take some pictures with that in mind; not sure how you could access them, though. Guess if I posted them on Facebook, you could get to them.
You make an excellent point here. The last time I was at the range the guy next to me just bought a new 40 cal and on his first shot the gun jammed up. When I saw he was having a problem I ask if I could help and he handed me his pistol and I took a look and sure enough the range had sold him 380 ammo and it did chamber and fired one round but I told him you have the wrong ammo for this gun. Take it back inside and tell them you need 40 cal ammo and get a credit for the box of 380 that you don't need. A few minutes later the range guy came back to the range with that guys gun and fired 7 rounds of 40 cal through his gun to make sure the 380 round had not damaged anything. Lucky for the guy that bought the new S & W 40 cal it was still ok and no damage had been done.
The stuff you talked about towards the middle of the video is why I am glad that the "+p" label is starting to be used by the industry on super hot loads so consumers can better differentiate.
Awhile ago you did a couple videos with the Ruger Scout Rifle, so I was wondering if you'll ever do a video the Savage Model 11 Scout Rifle? I honestly think the Savage quality now a days is very similar to Ruger, but the price is more reasonable.
I've heard that the Vietnamese were able to use our 556 rounds in THIER AK's during the Vietnam War. Any truth to this? I've heard this claim from several vets.
+vince Karade I'm no expert but i would think the AK wouldn't cycle properly. If it did extract and re-chamber the 556 it would be highly inaccurate as the bullet would be bouncing around in the barrel as it exited.
Hickok 45, you're my favorite, I wish I could shoot as we ll as you do. one thing I was wondering is how come you never have different people to stop by your compound and share their information on guns as well I think it would be pretty nice, regardless I'll still watch you, love you man...in a cool way!
I'm glad you made this video, because this could be a serious issue with some people, myself included with regard to .223's and 5.56 rounds for different guns because I really don't know much about rifles. The golden rule is this: if you don't know, ask. Gun stores are a lot like gyms, in that you should always ask if you don't know, because if you do something though guesswork you could end up seriously hurt, and in both places people are a lot more friendly than you may initially think, and are happy to share info
Don't let them fool you. The 223 and the 5.56 NATO is the same round. The difference is 223 is the civilian moniker and 5.56 NATO is the military moniker. Ammo companies try to convince people there two different types of rounds to make more money. The only thing you really need to worry about is don't use any rounds that are marked +p in guns not rated for it. Especially older guns. The +p may Break the firing mechanism.
honestly Hickok people if the person does not realize what type of ammo to put it in there firearm they shouldn't even have it in their hands until someone properly teaches them how to use it and educate them on ammo and the different types loads etc thank you for your video I love them
8x57 Mauser is NOT a .30 caliber but a .323 caliber round.. :D I'm sure Mr. hickok45 knows this quite well but a somekind of brain short cirquit came about.. :)
Yes I insist especially because this video was and is for complete gun ignorants just like you said and as you know as a gun person, firearms are anal in the very core the way weapons and ammunition are made just like hickok45 explained on the video. Exact measurements and anal tolerances. Me personally made a mistake once loading a custom, Mosin-actioned hunting rifle, with a Sako .308 barrel, with .311 caliber 200gr old Finnish military warloads. Full house charge. The rifle fed them just fine but the recoil was a bit stout to say the least and I couldn't hit a broad side of a barn. I checked the brass and noticed the primers were cratering heavily and stopped. I KNEW the difference of a .308 and a .311 bullets but the fact simply didn't cross my mind that the barrel actually said .308 as Mosin's are typically between .310 and .312 except Finnish models M27 and M28. So even the tiniest measurements in high power rifles can make a world of difference. So I admit, I am anal.. :D Btw. nice word that "anal"..xD
+StPaul76 It's just a point of reference, and since nobody this video is targeting would know that, would care, and since that knowledge would not impact them in any way, it's pretty much irrelevant. thanks for sharing though.
Nice video. I agree, this can be confusing. One other confusing thing is cartridges that are the same thing but called something different. Like .380 ACP is also called 9mm Browning Court. Good advice to check with a knowledgeable person at your local gun shop.
thanks for doing this video some people do not know about the ballistics of the bullet. chambers gauge bullet grain the force to fire.. i like this video. most informative thank you. for explaining it so well.
I have been absolutely shocked at the amount of spent 9mm casings I have found on gun range floors or grounds that were fired in a .40 SW gun. It's mind boggling. Nice vid Hickok.
i was at walmart the other day picking up some 7.62x39. this guy is standing there staring at the ammo case. the walmart employee comes over and says to the guy can i help you? he looks at him and say yeah can i get some of this 22 ammo. the employee says thats .223 not .22. the guy looked at the employee with such a stupid and uneducated face, then replied "oh well will it fit in a .22?"
I know they sell adapters that allow guns to shoot different ammos. For example with these adapters a 32 S&W can be shot out of a 30-06, a 7.62x25 can be shot out of 7.62x54r, and a .22lr can be shot out of a 223.
Great video. Weird exception to the 'stick with the chamber marking on the barrel' rule: If the chamber is marked 223 Wylde it can chamber both 223 Rem or 5.56 Nato
My old middle school had this outdoor ED class and at one point or few the teacher taught us about gun safety and the dangers in mishandling firearms. He even showed us a vid of one short barreled rifle exploding in the dude's hand. I don't know if the class exists anymore, but I'm sure happy to have had it. C:
"Mainly, you just want to not do anything stupid." - Oh, words of wisdom, SO many people could benefit from. Applicable to all firearms usage, and most of life.
Yeah it happens quite a bit some people it blows the chamber for example only use 5.56 under 62 grain in a .223 chamber because 62 and up are special ammos and could jam and go off in body because they are too long to work with the free bore and by go off i mean jam in the barrel and the second’ll detonate in the gun as a squib load type situation.
Also wanted to say cool mr. Hickok45 I thought for a moment you were going to make it through a whole video without shooting something! But you came through and fired the old 45 three times, kudos to you sir! And good day
my best friend brought some guys out to the range one day and this one new shooter loaded a .308 in a mosin nigant luckily it didn't blow up in his face but it is an issue to be addressed so thank you Hickok for doing so. To anyone wanting to tack friends out to a range just load the gun for them and keep an eye on your guns so theirs no problems like this
Most cartridges with the exception of some military ammo have the calibre/size stamped on the back. The firearm typically has the calibre/size of the intended ammo stamped on the barrel.
Good video. We all like to believe we're more knowledgeable than we are sometimes. We all have an area we think we are experts in. But a lot of times going back to basics is not a bad thing. After all.... we all preach fundamentals. lolI say, and it sounds like you're saying the same thing: When in doubt, don't!
+fasfan It doesn't help that even identical cartridges have different pressures and some frames marked "44 blah blah" will shoot normal, but aren't rated for +P stuff. Similarly, the continual confusion around .223/5.56 pressures... The gun industry needs a better model for "robustness".
TheJohn8765 I hear ya. I agree. That's why I said "when in doubt: Don't" But there is a MOUNTAIN of confusing information out there. I've seen many people for instance, claiming it makes no difference between .223 and 5.56mm because they are the same now. Maybe a better thing would be: "When in doubt, refer to the manual and/or contact the firearm manufacturer."
Ive heard the .223/5.56 info both ways. They may be almost completely identical but pressures come into play. I tell people to play it safe, if it says 5.56, it will shoot both. If it says .223, stick with .223.

Stuff a 8mm in a .308 and if for some reason it chambered even well now you've got a bullet much to big for the barrel trying to squeeze it's fat body down it.
Isn't 7.62 caliber 30 and 308 is 7.82
@@LavitosExodius true, but im just talking the case. Always make sure your using the correct diameter bullets when reloading. Im just saying a 30-06 case works well for reloading if you take the right steps to prep it.

@@plaguepandemic5651 Never buy reloaded ammo, because you don't know how it was reloaded, and by whom ): ?
so you're saying I can use a 20mm in my AK but I might have some feeding issues? Gotcha!
I would try 105mm HEAP instead.

Good educational video, Hickok45, about using the correct ammunition for the firearm.
+john smith Come on John! We learn this stuff in the mom's womb in Tennessee :)
+john smith I remember hunting squirrels when I was 7 and never loaded the wrong ammo in my gun :)
ArtisanTony..... Hopefully, even though you be a Tennessean, you weren't hunting with John BarleyCorn, at seven years of age.
Hickok45 always gives good information. He's not just a great shooter he gives gun safety just as well as he shoots. Thank you very much Hickok.

I love your range set up.
Hey Hickock! New Zealand shooter here. Our military use the Styer AUG. Can you do a video showing your entire collection? Maybe a part 2 where you fire your favorites. Love the channel!
Wait, so I can't use a .50 BMG in my 12g shotgun?
You sure can

Better yet, put a 20 ga. in your Glock 19 and fire it off :)
Noooooo u put a 30mm auto cannon in a 12 gauge

Your first mistake was buying anything gun related at walmart.
WHAT WOULD WE DO WITHOUT YOU GUYS...U do safety on guns, education and reviews,,,,u do funny stuff and serious things...you are needed on U-Tube as we need air to breath and dark beer to drink!! Love ya guys!!

+skyler lathrop Depending on the gun you can actually fire .45 LC in a gun that shoots .410. The Governor shoots both.

Can I use 5.56 in my nerf gun?
I need it for my friends birthday party

Unbeknowndog3 no the nerf darts and magazines are your standard 7.62 x 39mm size
@@bennycheca9426 really, those are ak 47 rounds right?
Yeah so making a Nerf AK makes sense
Well, birthday, 1 year closer to death, might as well make it happen right now
You make an excellent point here.
Did you know you can use a Lego persons head as a .40 caliber bullet and even turn it upside down to make a hollow point. The more you know.

You were very wise to do such a video friend. I've seen and been asked by other shooters many of the same questions. If your not sure,.. ask !!!
Good to re-watch these old vid's .
Those damn high capacity muzzle loaders!!!
+All Games We have one on the way.
+vince Karade I also think it would destroy the rifling in the AK from tumbling in the much bigger barrel.
+vince Karade you would have to explain how in the hell a 7.62x39 bolt would chamber a 5.56mm round first?????????????
I had a Cabela's sales person who wanted to add a box of .357 magnum 158 grain JHP to my Glock 31C purchase.

I know they sell adapters that allow guns to shoot different ammos. For example with these adapters a 32 S&W can be shot out of a 30-06, a 7.62x25 can be shot out of 7.62x54r, and a .22lr can be shot out of a 223.
The intro was hilarious!!!
Great video. Weird exception to the 'stick with the chamber marking on the barrel' rule:
If the chamber is marked 223 Wylde it can chamber both 223 Rem or 5.56 Nato

Wait so I can't load 81mm mortar rounds in my .45 magnum? Aww.
Jokes aside, seriously? People don't use proper ammunition in their guns?
Yeah it happens quite a bit some people it blows the chamber for example only use 5.56 under 62 grain in a .223 chamber because 62 and up are special ammos and could jam and go off in body because they are too long to work with the free bore and by go off i mean jam in the barrel and the second’ll detonate in the gun as a squib load type situation.
Also wanted to say cool mr. Hickok45 I thought for a moment you were going to make it through a whole video without shooting something! But you came through and fired the old 45 three times, kudos to you sir! And good day

I agree. That's why I said "when in doubt: Don't"
But there is a MOUNTAIN of confusing information out there.
