I recently purchased my only handgun. To choose I went to a gun retailer with an indoor firing range. I explained to a clerk that I was making a decision to purchase a handgun for concealed carry and I wanted to hold different guns to see how comfortable and natural they felt in my hand. He laid out about seven guns on the counter. I handled each one and narrowed the selection down to three. Then asked how much each gun cost. Thats when I eliminated a really nice Kimber. I then choose to consider a Springfield Armory XDS. I rented the gun and purchased some ammo and targets. The gun felt natural in my hands and for a novice I was pretty accurate with it. Later, after saving some money for the purchase I "pulled the trigger."
I’m looking to decide between an XD and a 509 mid size at the moment. Would be my first gun as well. I really like the feel of the Mod 2 but it looks like they only make a subcompact one these days, so unless I find it used I might be SOL. The biggest challenge to me has been just getting guns in my hand. Stores are either too busy or out of stock. It’s been frustrating.

I obtained my Ohio Concealed Handgun License in 2012, renewed in 2017. I did make a shoulder holster for my 45 acp 1911-A1, and only carry it when I'm wearing a coat or a jacket in cooler weather. I also have a Cobra Patriot 45 (45 acp). I made a holster for it too, that I wear inside my pants while clipped to my belt. I also wear an over sized shirt to reduce printing and only button up a few buttons at the bottom of my shirt, to make my handgun less likely to be seen yet easy enough to get it out if I have to.
While that statement is true, I suspect a school principal or a cop that finds you with your concealed weapon in the liquor store or bank or court house or post office would disagree and you’d go to jail. How are they going to know. Think it through before making some stupid response.
Same here, lost 27lbs. Saw your review on pocket holsters. I actually ordered a sticky holster last night for pocket carry. Most comfy for me. I'm 65 so I go for comfort. Love your videos. I've learned a lot. Thanks for the reply. Oh, I carry a mp9 shield.

One person's "practical" is another person's "impractical." Everybody just has to figure it out for himself. So many holster and firearms options. It usually takes a great deal of experimentation and money before reaching that Nirvana of carry. :-)
Most CCW folks have a drawer full of holsters and receipts from gun trades. Takes some time to find what works for each individual. Here's what works for me... Find a handgun that you can shoot well and consistently. Be willing to find a carry method that works well for you and your chosen piece. Simple but not easy. For me, it is a compact 1911 and a 4 O'Clock holster. I have extensive experience with the 1911 and the 4 O'clock is easily hidden and accessible. Find what works for you. Invest in your safety and be open to experiment/invest.
@ThunderousWrath, Great gun, just not as flexible in terms of carry, at least in full size version. With the bobtail on my Ed Brown Commander model (Kobra Carry), I find that it will carry about anywhere a Compact Glock will, except it's a bit heavier.

I have read that General Patton carried a small, Remington 380 in a waist holster between his belt and shirt. He called it his "insurance gun." Of course, open carrying the Colt SAA 45 and/or the S&W Model 27 .357 magnum and/or his Army issued M1911 kept him pretty well armed. In an interview, he once said that he carried the Colt SAA 45 because it was his favorite gun to shoot, it had sentimental value to him because he bought it on the day he got promoted to first lieutenant, and his soldiers loved seeing it on him, but that the S&W Model 27 was for any situation in which he might need a "killing gun" against the Wehrmacht. His Colt SAA had two notches he carved into one of the ivory grips because he killed two 'banditos' belonging to Pancho Villa and he also claimed to have killed six Germans with it in WWI when injured in a bomb crater with a buddy who killed more than six. (edit, I meant WWI in the bomb crater. He and his buddy held off Germans for a day or so before getting back to safety)
UPDATE: I haven't been able to find any corroboration for Patton killing Germans in WWI in an artillery shell crater (not a 'bomb crater'). What appears to have happened was that Patton was immobilized inside a shell crater on the combat front line, along with a buddy. His buddy helped him with a minor leg injury and the two of them held off attacking Germans for about a day and a half. Reportedly, his Army buddy shot and killed numerous Germans, but it is not clear whether Patton himself shot and killed any. He was armed with his trusty SAA .45 and possibly an M1911, as well. Don't know if he was carrying a rifle at the time. After the enemy retreated, medics carried Patton back behind the lines for medical attention and he fully recovered within a few days. It may have been something like a pulled ham string. In addition to his beloved SSA .45 and S&W Model 27, his Army issued M1911, and his .380 pocket Remington, he was also known to enjoy plinkng with a .22 rifle, especially in Africa. About his gun philosophy, he always told his soldiers, "Do not aim to wound or warn, always aim to kill."

I am a male and I carry in a shoulder bag. It's a Tactical EDC bag. The bag has a whole mess of velcro on the inside so I took some of that stick and peel velcro and attached it to my holster so that the gun stays in place while I'm walking around. I carry a full size Beretta Px4 Storm, with two extra magazines I have 50 rounds.
Thanks for your insights. I have been licensed to conceal carry for many years. I still value all the on-line training available like yours. Keep them coming.
I hear you, man. I used to work at the gas station in the 80's and back then I have to be walking to the customers with lots of cash in my pockets for change as credit weren't as common as now... luckily, those days passed without incident. But I can see the need to conceal carry if I am still working as an attendant as the gas station.
@ Hickok45: Delighted to see you reporting on the topic of legal concealed carry. I conceal carry for business purposes, but unlike you, I do not have a law enforcement or military background. So I’m happy to receive the benefit of your experience.
You are a great American patriot that really cares, unlike some of these armchair warriors want to be’s that totally neglect gun safety. You remind me of my grandfather that served in WWI in France on the front lines. At the age of 8 he had me learning to shoot an old single shot .22 rifle with a small scope on it. We grew up in southern West Virginia in the mountains (life was good). I’ve always carried with me what he taught me in life and I’m a better person for it today. Now at the age of 63 I just got my first concealed permit, we now live in NC (west of Charlotte) and I’ve watched your channel for a good while and this old dog is still learning. Thanks for all you do, would love to meet you one day it would be almost be like seeing my grandpa again. God bless.
I carry my S&W model 19 on a rail fitted to my arm I made from some kitchen drawer runners. Slides out straight into my hand with one quick, exaggerated 'throw' of my arm. Sometimes 2 or 3 throws. Takes but a minute or two. Been waiting patiently for 18 years to deploy it in a situation, despite spending a lot of time hanging around banks, schools and fun parks for terrorists or criminals to make a move. Will continue to patrol and train my skills until the day I don't feel like it. God bless you all my fellow patriots
This is why I love my Taurus PT-111 G2. It's a single action pistol, with double strike capability. This means you can manipulate it to be carried "decocked", so your first trigger pull will be a long double action pull. I, personally, would NOT carry a single action "only" pistol for self defense. To each their own...
Well said Mr 45..... where did you hide the teleprompter? I think you covered and will cover some good points for people to ask themselves as responsible gun owners, potential gun owners and permit holders. Done well once again....
Whoah, that thing is even carryable? My GP 161 is on the borderline in my shoulder holster. S&W500 is a monster. (Note: Here in Czech Republic, we must carry concealed)
Many good points are raised in this clip. Some other things people need to keep in mind is how often they'll train to carry concealed. It's not as simple as it seems in the movies. How do you draw from a light jacket vs a heavy winter coat, drawing from a car, drawing when your wife or kid are with you, stuff like that. And at the end of the day, since you are responsible for each round that comes out of the barrel, are you skilled enough not to be a safety hazard to those around you.
My (late) wife had a hand bag several years ago that was designed as a "concealed carry" holster . It had a split in the end of the body of the bag that was large enough that she could put her S&W Model 686 3-inch in it . She carried her gun everywhere we went .
Store robbery caught an off duty cop in line. Hands were up while cash register was emptied, then the thug demanded customer's wallets. Cop: "it's in my pocket" then slowly put his hand in the pocket and shot his .380 kel-tec through the pants into the perp's chest. His hip holstered glock would have made a bigger hole but the mutt still ended up on the slab. Since that story, I carry my kel-tec loose in the pocket, the only time I touch the gun is when I slowly take it out at bed time. I'll deal with the lint. I sewed a snap button on all of my gun pockets to prevent it from ever sliding out. was easy.
frank frank I don't want to get in a gun fight over some money, I find situations like this very difficult grey areas where I'd want my finger on the trigger but still tentative. I guess if you can be almost sure of neutralizing the target it's fine. (of course in situation you described, once a criminal sees the badge he might then kill). but I've heard enough stories about shooting gun defensively preemptively, not neutralizing target, and it turns out really bad when robber might not have done anything violent otherwise. of course, it's good to get a criminal off the streets, and to be cognizant of potential innocent bystanders.
There are a lot of negative comments about the kel tec but I love my 3at in my pocket. It’s not a lot of fun or comfortable to shoot but it is very easy to carry.
@@bubbalee9924 Vast majority of the time an armed robber will take your money and leave that's it, but the problem is you never know when the person robbing you will just end up shooting you after they have taken everything either to leave no witnesses or they're just crazy.

Depends on the state. open carry is rather Permitted to everyone, or No-one can do it in different states. Concealed carry has to have a permit in EVERY state, but they all have different laws for qualifications. such as Florida you have to be 21 years of age and have a course for firearm safety plus. and in Montana you only have to be 18 and just apply for one no course needed..
God, that's horrible! I'm glad it's legal to carry in Czech Republic (of course if you have the license and not in bank, courthouse...). There are many countries where carry is illegal - Luxembourg, France, our neighbour Germany... What are they thinking? Will criminals and crazymans obey the anti-gun laws? :-)

Instead of being hounded by RUclips you should receive funding from the National Institutes of Health or HHS or some other alphabet agency and perhaps a time slot on public TV to promote safe, sensible gun ownership.
I thot my inner ear had acted up till I realized you have some loud birdcalls in Tennessee. You may need a Harrell warning about background noise. Just kiddin. Love your videos. Saves me a fortune watching you spend ammo and research so I can spend wisely.
Good advice there Hickok. Picking your style of Carry is very important. Another point to bring up is level of comfort for the style and location of carry and the chosen gun. It needs to be comfortable enough to foster program compliance or wearing the gun everywhere (that’s not prohibited) everyday. Anyway, Another great video as always.
don't carry a CZ 75 spo1 for conceal carry. It weights over 2 lbs unloaded. For a self defense gun simpler is better. My choice would be a Glock. Just point and squeeze the trigger, no thought needed. and it is clean , nothing pertruding out the side like decocker, or safeties safeties. In a stressful situation like a gun fight who needs to think about taking a safety off. Just my thought.
John D I’ve been carrying the .380 in my pocket for a couple weeks now , most comfortable little shooter and lightweight as hell, the lcp 2 he actually did a video on
@LVen21, Yeah, the guys who lent me the little wallet holster I show in my Pocket Carry video were telling me about that. The gun cannot be totally concealed by the holster if it will still fire, something like that. I suppose all the little wallet holster makers are aware of what parts of the gun have to be visible, etc. Good to be aware of the law, though.
first off, your videos are awesome. i think you bring alot of knowledge to the table and point out alot of angles that some people might not think of, beit with concealed carry or just on gun comparisons. i've got about a year until i get my concealed carry permit and am trying to get as many opinions and try out as many options as possible. i was excited to see this video come up and learn that you were going to continue with the series. keep up the good work!
I have a 380 for backup on my ankle. Looking for a good primary CCW. I passed (100%) using my brother's G30 on my shooting part of the CCW. I would never recommend that UNLESS YOU PLAN TO OWN ONE. But I did plan to own that sweet, smooth, BIG and CONCILIABLE weapon. Then when I went to Walmart to get some affordable "target FMJs", I noticed a pretty big difference in price when it came to ammo/caliber. I live in Wilkes county NC and the closest Walmart is a 10 min. drive. But, you best know someone working there if you want a chance at some .22LRs. Point being... I noticed that the ammo for my .380 was cheaper (but only a couple of bucks) than the .45 ammo by about $3-$7 bucks depending on the brand and the tip. That's -when I saw the .40 Cal. ammo for the same or cheaper price than the .380 I carry as a 2nd/backup. Would love to see some "poor man videos", as it relates to "if you could only carry 1 handgun caliber, what would it be on terms of ammo affordability. Thanks.
Hey, I just wanted to say I'm a big fan of your videos! I'm not new to guns, but I am pretty new to handguns and you do a great job of presenting unbiased and clear information and your gun reviews are great! Really great info and surprising lack of BS (unlike soooo many other terrible amateur gun videos)! Keep on making really concise and informative videos!
Good discussion. Something else to think about.....I've seen people develop back problems from carrying tool belts, and even wallets from having it on one side of their body all the time. It happens over time, not something you notice right away. If a gun has any substantial weight to it, you ought to take care not to develop this sneaky long-term trauma. This is where under the shoulder rigs might be better. At least having a good belt to support it, and a counterweight on the other side.
KBLively You're absolutely right. I developed back issues from just sitting on my wallet for extended periods of time while driving & etc. As soon as I stopped sitting on my wallet my back pain went away! I now wear a man bag for my wallet & my concealed weapon. It all worked out just fine... 😊
Thanks! I'm glad that the first question my doctor asked me was do you sit on your wallet while driving? After that ordeal I'm terrified of keeping my wallet in any almost any of my pockets. But if I have to carry it on me it's the front pockets only. The flashbacks from rehab made me feel too uncomfortable to ever place a wallet in my rear pockets again. #ExcruciatingPain
I avoid banned carry establishment s. Luckily around here. We can carry even in our schools during sports events. Win or lose . No drama. Just a game ; )
Great video. I went thru all those question when deciding to carry. I live in Florida and spend most of the time in shorts and tee shirts. After watching a lot of your videos and trying various guns and rigs, I settled on two to pocket carry: 1) Kahr P380 2) Bersa Thunder 380. I put in as much range time as I can to stay proficient with them.
I'm new to this. What's wrong with open carry? Wouldn't that be better than concealed? Is it a different permit? Do all states have the option of concealed or open? What happens in your car? What happens when you go to a store with a sign saying "no firearms"? Why is any of this necessary with the 2nd Amendment in place? Where do I go for this info so I don't waste your time on this website? Thanks.
Open carry makes you stand out and makes you look like the guy that wants to be the hero. Many states have restrictive laws on open carry, to include Texas which many people think is the most 'gun loving' state. Places like hospitals and schools do not allow guns and it's not an infringement on your 2nd Amendment right. These places are private and can restrict your ability to carry. Search Google and you'll find a ton of forums that talk about your specific region and the laws that are in place in that area.
avilisk in many states its against the law. Past that Nothing is wrong with it, other then you attract attention. at times attention of a freaked out antigunner who will call the cops ..at that point it can get hairy
I carry semi autos in the waistband with a compatible holster. I carry midsize revolvers in a belly band holster. Whatever you carry make sure you are good with it. I make sure I get range time with all of my guns. My XDM is a pull and shoot, my 1911 has a thumb safety and a very light trigger. They shoot the same bullet but work differently. Practice with the ammo you will carry with too. A lot of people practice with cheap ammo and carry the top end stuff. Different ammo can hit way off. Cheap ammo is just for plinking! Practice and test yourself with whatever ammo you plan on carrying.
My guess is that I'm probably less likely to meet a terrorist in my field than I am to meet a bigot, apparently from the North, or a person lacking a sense of humor on the Internet. :-)
It depends on your state laws. In a strictly concealed only state you can face prosecution for brandishing if your gun is accidentally exposed, or even printing through your clothing. Other states, such as Texas, do not allow full open carry, but their laws account for accidental exposure for which you will not likely be prosecuted. The main benefit for concealed carriers in an open carry state is that it doesn't matter if your shirt flies up or your jacket comes open.

I really like the feel of the Mod 2 but it looks like they only make a subcompact one these days, so unless I find it used I might be SOL. The biggest challenge to me has been just getting guns in my hand. Stores are either too busy or out of stock. It’s been frustrating.
In regards to carring guns in questionable areas..I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6...
Daveyboy yes sir!
I just got that

Can someone explain this to me please i dont get it
He would rather be judged by a jury of 12 people than carried in a casket by 6 people... as in he would rather carry a weapon and be tried for it in court than be killed without protection
you sir, are one heck of a fine teacher

I carry 24/7. I worked in law enforcement long enough to know that carrying a firearm is my best protection against vile criminals that seek to take from me our harm from me, or other innocent people.
Carrying is a liability if you dont know what you're doing, get proper training if you're going to (legally) carry

Just bought a Glock 19 gen 4. I stumbled across your inside pant holster video first. I just got mine today and now all my jeans from highschool fit. I am 21. GA licensed. Thanks for your two videos.
We need more people like this and I'm not kidding
I enjoy just putting on hickock videos while I browse the web. Whether or not im listening its just comforting knowing he cares about my safety and is giving me tips
I also wear an over sized shirt to reduce printing and only button up a few buttons at the bottom of my shirt, to make my handgun less likely to be seen yet easy enough to get it out if I have to.
it's not a gun free zone for criminals
Well said
i is a gun free zone when the criminal is pushin up dayseys
So true! Why don't people understand that?
When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.
Hickock 45, you are a national treasure that only we "gun nuts" know about. Thank God for the Internet and your willingness to not just entertain, but inform. This may be the most important vid you've done so far.
I surely do appreciate all of your teachings and opinions! Getting my first CCW permit at 70 practicing with a brand new Glock 19 5 and getting training as per your direction. Thanks again
I literally got my permit less than a week ago. The timing of this video couldn't be better!!! You're awesome. Please continue in this direction!!! THANK YOU
One person's "practical" is another person's "impractical." Everybody just has to figure it out for himself. So many holster and firearms options. It usually takes a great deal of experimentation and money before reaching that Nirvana of carry. :-)

" I still want to be able to carry legally on campus."
I'm with you, brother.
Exactly! have a box of holsters in the closet. FINALLY, found one I like.
1911 will always do you Justice !
Get into a lot of gunfights do ya?
@ThunderousWrath, Great gun, just not as flexible in terms of carry, at least in full size version. With the bobtail on my Ed Brown Commander model (Kobra Carry), I find that it will carry about anywhere a Compact Glock will, except it's a bit heavier.
That opening draw was pretty damn smooth lol
I live in Texas and am taking my LTC class next Saturday. I'm really excited and happy I've finally stopped the procrastination and paid my state registration fee and doing my finger prints in a couple days and taking the class in a week. Looking forward to the class a learning how to safely, legally carry my pistol. Love all your videos btw.

Wise words
The best EDC is the one you will carry
It’s better to have a 45 in your waistband than a 380 at home
My 9-year-old son and I really enjoying watching you together ,we call you the Bob Ross of the gun world. You're teaching is very helpful and enjoyable.
@5:17 "You're gonna carry it a shoulder bag if you're female [...] maybe some male's I don't know about" had a good laugh at that one :)
Sir, You are an absolute wealth of information for a newly permitted guy in the state of New York. Thanks so much for all your videos....
@jordsonmtmalful, Thanks. It's good to have an expert on board to straighten all us other "experts" out. :-)
Thank you! For 38 years, my husband always told me, the only time you might need your gun, is when you don't have it.., so have it!! You just reminded me of that when this video started, he use to do that same training to me as we were hiking in the Arizona desert!
I am a male and I carry in a shoulder bag. It's a Tactical EDC bag. The bag has a whole mess of velcro on the inside so I took some of that stick and peel velcro and attached it to my holster so that the gun stays in place while I'm walking around. I carry a full size Beretta Px4 Storm, with two extra magazines I have 50 rounds.
gcollin75 wow, do you take medication for anxiety as well?
Why in the world would you carry a Px4?? Only 50 rounds?
Thanks for your insights. I have been licensed to conceal carry for many years. I still value all the on-line training available like yours. Keep them coming.

I don't live in a risky place, but I do work in a gas station, and every day I wonder if today is the day, someone wants to rob this place.
I hear you, man. I used to work at the gas station in the 80's and back then I have to be walking to the customers with lots of cash in my pockets for change as credit weren't as common as now... luckily, those days passed without incident. But I can see the need to conceal carry if I am still working as an attendant as the gas station.
Well many businesses are anal about employees carrying, so maybe you won’t have to much longer if they catch you. Lol
If they wanna prevent robberies they need to hire armed security that’s not your job

God bless.

I live in a tropical shorts and tshirt area and my little naa .22 mag works great for me for concealment. Light, easy, fast on target plus deadly.
Ur the best Mr. Hickok thanks for all the great knowledge :))
I'm a legal carrier but I don't feel well with the way the world is going
That's the whole point of carrying. If everthing was rainbows and pixie farts no one would need to carry in the first place.
That's exactly why you need to carry.
Andre McGoo It will always be the same, however the people in it change.
This is why I love my Taurus PT-111 G2. It's a single action pistol, with double strike capability. This means you can manipulate it to be carried "decocked", so your first trigger pull will be a long double action pull. I, personally, would NOT carry a single action "only" pistol for self defense. To each their own...
Hell yeah hickok! ya never let me down
Well said Mr 45..... where did you hide the teleprompter?

Many good points are raised in this clip. Some other things people need to keep in mind is how often they'll train to carry concealed. It's not as simple as it seems in the movies. How do you draw from a light jacket vs a heavy winter coat, drawing from a car, drawing when your wife or kid are with you, stuff like that. And at the end of the day, since you are responsible for each round that comes out of the barrel, are you skilled enough not to be a safety hazard to those around you.
Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.... I shall now mount cannons and ballistas to my house in case of a dragon attack!

@@bubbalee9924 Vast majority of the time an armed robber will take your money and leave that's it, but the problem is you never know when the person robbing you will just end up shooting you after they have taken everything either to leave no witnesses or they're just crazy.
just wanted to say thank you, after 30 years of raising kids i am at a place where I can feel comfortable with a gun in the house. i have watched all your vids and have helped me a great deal, This one more than any other.
so again, thank you.
I pick up my 27 g4 Wednesday day.
Carry everywhere!! Like commented below, I’d rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6 any day. Stay vigilant patriots!
Jake Lucas yes sir well said!
Appreciate your video presentations, Hickok45, thank you. it would be great to see a video on Double Tap shooting and/or a "How To" rapid fire, accuracy while rapid fire shooting, etc. recovery from recoil, etc. You're a Patriot and "

Instead of being hounded by RUclips you should receive funding from the National Institutes of Health or HHS or some other alphabet agency and perhaps a time slot on public TV to promote safe, sensible gun ownership.

Good to be aware of the law, though.
too bad that i live in Austria ( Vienna) and its hard to get a gun.
That's a shame, Austria makes some of the best guns in the world.
first off, your videos are awesome. i think you bring alot of knowledge to the table and point out alot of angles that some people might not think of, beit with concealed carry or just on gun comparisons. i've got about a year until i get my concealed carry permit and am trying to get as many opinions and try out as many options as possible. i was excited to see this video come up and learn that you were going to continue with the series. keep up the good work!
Thanks.
9mm all the way. 22 if you are a little girl
yeah if you are dude you got to carry at least .50 so you can kill an elephant
Solution: Carry two guns!!
Problem Solved!!!
39Thorns what the heck were they carrying in their wallet. My wallet is like 3 oz
The video gives an error at 12:33 and I if I try to play the video at a later point it won't load.
You're not the only one experiencing "technical difficulties"... Can't get sounds after that point in the video...
Search Google and you'll find a ton of forums that talk about your specific region and the laws that are in place in that area.
even tho not legal, i've carried my 1911 into every place i've been in, including no gun zones (in shoulder holster :) )
dustystix76 uhhhhhh
avilisk in many states its against the law. Past that Nothing is wrong with it, other then you attract attention. at times attention of a freaked out antigunner who will call the cops ..at that point it can get hairy
good way to make yourself a target "better take out this guy with the gun while he's not looking before I do what I intended to"
I carry semi autos in the waistband with a compatible holster.
Excellent!
