Honestly, in the terms of pick up and play games, the Virtual Pro Wrestling/WCW/WWF/Def Jam/Ultimate Muscle games that were made by THQ, AKI, and EA are some of the best in the field, and there are just a few games that honestly provide better playing experiences, in parts, anyway, and they are WWF SmackDown! 2: Know Your Role, in the terms of story lines (you could literally have a story line for your character that can last for literal YEARS), WWF SmackDown (3): Just Bring It, in the terms of match types, and Fire Pro Wrestling D/Z/R/Returns/World for wrestler, wrestler customization, ring customization, and move customization. I still play No Mercy and all of the other THQ/AKI wrestling games for the N64 often to this day!! That also includes imports of Virtual Pro Wrestling 1&2!! Best wrestling games ever made, in my opinion!!
This game is so nostalgic and wrestling games have failed to recapture the fun gameplay and style of this since. My first wrestling game as a kid was WCW world Tour, which was the first attempt at this AKI formula. It was fun even then but No Mercy took it to a new level.
@Sailor Mercury, once, I made a female tag team of your friends Uranus and Neptune and made them this ultra-feminist female heel tag team that was styled like A.P.A. in WWF: No Mercy.
I miss the believability when smaller (Jericho, Christian, X-Pac) wrestlers couldn't suplex, bodyslam, or powerbomb bigger wrestlers. And when bigger wrestlers, super heavyweights (Big Show, Mark Henry) couldn't go to the top rope or execute cruiserweight moves. I remember in WCW Revenge guys like Hogan and Goldberg would do a pose at the corner instead of a top rope move. And smaller wrestlers struggled to slam super heavyweights and when they didn't they'd sell their back being strained. But when they did, as shown in the video with Triple H/Andre the Giant, if you were a bigger, stronger wrestler that could slam giants, they'd fall over after the move because it took a lot of energy out of them. These days, anyone can do any move to anyone and it doesn't mean anything.
What made No Mercy so special back then is not only because of its gameplay and huge amount of content for the time, but also the fact that it was based on the best year ever for the WWF, 2000. The roster was STACKED back then. The storylines and matches were also exciting. Minus WrestleMania, PPVs were way better that year than in 1998 and 1999. It's a shame that WWE never had a year that good, though 2003 comes pretty close.
I think you should have mentioned that this game still, to this day, has a _massive_ modding community online. There are tons of mods that revamp the game with new rosters and game modes, better graphics etc.
I loved the AKI wrestling games on the N64! I had all of them! My uncle had WCW vs. The World for the Playstation as well! Even though I am a WCW fan, No Mercy gets the nod from me as the best wrestling game ever, just because of the Create A Wrestler! I NEVER played a WWE character, only my created characters. These were fun times with my brother and friends! I hope the AEW game is very similar to No Mercy, just with some updated things!
I remember the glitch! I thought it was just my copy. We were able to reset our game and it worked after that! This is definitely the best wrestling game on N64! Definitely top two with wrestling games of all time. Smackdown: HCTP might be number for me though. Yeahhhhhh 😀
Smackdown! Here Comes The Pain from the PS2 era and WWE2k14 from the 360/PS3 era are also right up there with No Mercy and the other N64 wrestling games in the fun department.
Since there wasn't a last man standing match at this time, my bro and I used to turn off the pinfall, submission, and KO. The only way to win was by knocking the other player out outside the ring for a 10 second count out.
While No Mercy had the better feature set and the running grapple. I still want to say that WM2000 and VPW 2 (which had the running grapple) were the better games in hindsight. The key thing was the frame rate being stable with 4 players on screen, where No Mercy suffered from terrible slowdown in that situation. In fact I think No Mercy as a whole ran slower than WM2K and that hurt the overall game play. Still there's no doubt that the AKI WCW/WWF N64 games still blow the crap out of all the games that came after it, including the Yukes! games on GameCube and PS2. I completely gave up on the wrestling genre with the XBox 360 and PS3. FirePro on the PS4 is quite nice though, once you get the hang of it.
I have Revenge, 2000 and No Mercy (could buy world tour for less the $15 if I really want) and No Mercy was the best. Revenge was fantastic and had a great roster and I played the hell out of it, but No Mercy was it perfected. Wrestlemania 2000 had the best story mode though I always say No Mercy, Here Comes the Pain and Revenge are the best wrestling games ever.
Great video but I am surprised you didn't mention some of the mods of WWF No Mercy. I would assume they would be better than the original due to all the extra content.
Yes! My favorite wrestling game. My cart has the glitch but I never got it replaced. Thinking of getting a USB N64 controller and playing this on emulator.
@@ForEternia Huge fan of wrestling back in the day. Brett Hart was my Favorite, his book is the only book I've read and liked. Got it as a birthday present. My brother got the faces of Foley for his birthday the same year. But yes HUGE fan we used to get every event on DVD. They used to have a magazine on wrestling events. I would get them every time they came out.
I returned my original copy of the game before the glitch was found by THQ, so I got another copy with the bug. In the US, it seems that the only way to get a replacement was a relatively unknown mail in service that you had to sign up for on THQ's website. I never heard about it and it was during a time in my life when lots of things were going on; parents split, moved out of our house, changed schools, live with my then girlfriend's family shortly and eventually ended up moving in with my grandparents, so the issue never got the attention it needed from me, as I gave up on it due to all the aforementioned things happening. A few years ago, after learning about the mail in service, I was searching eBay for the game and looking at the images when I found a copy that had the line USA-1, indicating it was a revised version. I asked the seller if the image was the exact game they were selling and they confirmed it was, so I bought it for about $12 to replace the bugged copy that I still had. It seems like this is a fairly rare version these days due to the limited nature of the bug fix copies that ever went out and as such is the rarest game I own.
@mryoyo, the people that made the Fire Pro Wrestling series also made a few 3D professional wrestling games that are known as the King of Colosseum series. I hear that they are also solid professional wrestling video games, and ditto for the Legends of Wrestling series, particularly its second installment.
I bought this game day 1, I cut school to get it. I can't even explain how much I love this game. And now AEW is making its game based on this, I'm over the moon.
Me and my friends all player the hell out of WCW NWO Revenge back in the day. Played Wrestlemania 2000 a bit but it never caught my interest. When I saw No Mercy it felt, to me, that they were over saturating the games so i never played it. But after watching your video i think i need to at least experience it. Great video, Big Daddy Top Hat! Your content rules!
This game is so good that i went out of my way to get my n64 out of storage with only this game, despite owning 30 others, buy the components needed to play this game on modern TV, buy a refurbished N64 controller and a new gaming chair just to play this game. I can legitimately tell you now, most other games aside from the wrestling ones on the N64 do not hold up, but this game is still that damn good today that its legitimately worth purchasing the whole damn thing on N64 just to play it. It's easily the best wrestling game ever made.
For newer generation of gamers, the concept of buying in-game items without spending $$$, and keep them "in the loop" (i.e; they're not behind in the whole meta) will be something of an archaic experience. I still can't believe I have to pay $$$ for some of the games I play because I want to have the better/exclusive/seasonal items.
The European version of the game never had blood, so we got the bug AND no blood! Also you could not save in the season mode which means you had to play through 1 whole path without turning off your N64, and you had to make notes about the paths because they weren't shown in the game.
When I found out that it was aki, asmik ace and yukes behind behind this game, that was it. I felt like heaven cause I was shocked and couldn't believe the same people who us WCW/NWO Revenge were the ones giving us this game. I had to go to church the next Sunday for Thanksgiving service because for me, it was a miracle. That's what this game meant to me for a wrestling game. The only other game worth calling a WWE wrestling game is Smackdown 5 and to an extent 4. Every thing else is du
Perry Saturn's leg sweep was A+B. Put something heavy on those buttons, go survival mode and walk away. Straight cash and unlocking all the secret characters
I don't remember those progress reset glitches but maybe it was only a PAL thing. Either that or I never really used the Smackdown Mall and we all just always made characters and fought each other.
The American carts had a similar, but even worse glitch. Instead of no longer saving new changes to data, the American carts would randomly reset themselves. Even worse, no fixed carts were ever made and released.
100% agree with everything you said. This is my most cherished N64 title in my library. I put it so much time creating my own roster of characters and trying to earn in game money for the Smackdown Mall. There has not been a wrestling game since that remotely comes close to its greatness. I also have Def Jam. I only like that game because of the exact same mechanics but don’t care for the rapper roster. I would love an updated version for the Switch but sadly I’m positive that will never happen. And nowadays, the Smackdown Mall would require buying actual DLC im sure.

These days, anyone can do any move to anyone and it doesn't mean anything.
I'd be really curious to hear more about WCW vs. The World. If nothing else, just to hear you run down all of the "fictional" characters
Top Hat, I just want a video about your Pro Wrestling history, not a game, you yourself, the man. Love your vids bro!
I think you should have mentioned that this game still, to this day, has a _massive_ modding community online. There are tons of mods that revamp the game with new rosters and game modes, better graphics etc.
I'm an original console guy so I don't know much about that pc stuff.
@@jjthapyro4130 It's honestly worth looking into, even if youre a console purist. Some of those No Mercy mods are seriously beyond impressive.
@@TheLokiBiz I know I've seen it and wish someone would know how to put it on a cartridge or at least an EverDrive.
Yeahhhhhh 😀
@1:28 dig dig diggity dawg!
a household meme for SO long
Wrestlemania 2000 had the best story mode though
I always say No Mercy, Here Comes the Pain and Revenge are the best wrestling games ever.
SmackDown: Here Comes The Pain on the PS2 stacks up really high against this title.
Here comes the pain is legendary !!
Great video but I am surprised you didn't mention some of the mods of WWF No Mercy. I would assume they would be better than the original due to all the extra content.
Yes! My favorite wrestling game. My cart has the glitch but I never got it replaced. Thinking of getting a USB N64 controller and playing this on emulator.
i never played the WWE games but WCW Revenge was my shit back in the day! me and friends had hundreds of hours of fun with it
It was a great time for Wrestling!!
I played Revenge everyday. The best wrestling game ever no comparison
Did you play it as a fan of wrestling or for games in general?
@@ForEternia Huge fan of wrestling back in the day. Brett Hart was my Favorite, his book is the only book I've read and liked. Got it as a birthday present. My brother got the faces of Foley for his birthday the same year. But yes HUGE fan we used to get every event on DVD. They used to have a magazine on wrestling events. I would get them every time they came out.
@@westernforce8498 No slowdown either when four players are playing either!
My favorite game of all time. Currently 730 CAWs all tricked out with GameShark codes.
The replay value, though.
Oh yeah, I forgot that the cart would randomly delete your progress. I remember that happened to me plenty of times. Never heard of a recall.
I remember taking back Warzone to EB games the same day I bought it, that game sucked.
😂 it really does.
@@olschoolTonyCarterInded!
Simply the best, second was WCW/NwO Revenge.
Most definitely I played it a lot as a kid at 9 back in 1999 all the way up to high school. Very true to the words.
Firepro is the standard of wrestling games! But for 3d wreslting this game is great.
You're rite, man, this is the greatest wrestling game.
@@roberteden3713 , the Fire Pro Wrestling series wants a word with you.
@@paxhumana2015 that game isn't really my cup of tea
Me and my friends all player the hell out of WCW NWO Revenge back in the day. Played Wrestlemania 2000 a bit but it never caught my interest. When I saw No Mercy it felt, to me, that they were over saturating the games so i never played it. But after watching your video i think i need to at least experience it.
Great video, Big Daddy Top Hat! Your content rules!
Day of Reckoning 2 for the Gamecube is the best wrestling game for me.
Also love that game.
@11:38 R.I.P. Pat Patterson
Bruhhh.. this game was so dope. Spent so much time with the boys back in the day on this. Good times
No mercy was absolutely the best game on the system. Best fifty quid I ever spent !! Even better than goldeneye. Aged better. 👌🏻
The European version of the game never had blood, so we got the bug AND no blood!
Also you could not save in the season mode which means you had to play through 1 whole path without turning off your N64, and you had to make notes about the paths because they weren't shown in the game.
N64 had the best and most fun wrestling games in any console, then and now
Hell yeah we want to see you do videos on the amazing Def Jam games!
I agree with everything except for him saying "its pay to win like fortnite" which is terribly wrong...
I would kill for a remaster of this game.
Perry Saturn's leg sweep was A+B. Put something heavy on those buttons, go survival mode and walk away. Straight cash and unlocking all the secret characters
Lol I would use bradshaw and used his.. never put something on the controller though
13:22 gamestation... shame GAME bought them. I got some absolute bargains from there. Neo geo pocket for one!
Fantastic channel man. Can you please do a series on RAW and RAW 2 for the original XBOX?
I don't remember those progress reset glitches but maybe it was only a PAL thing. Either that or I never really used the Smackdown Mall and we all just always made characters and fought each other.
Oh the memories! LOVED THIS GAME!
I played the shit out of power move pro wrestling back in the day.
Yes! Please do a video on Aki’s work in Def Jam Vendetta!
Back in the day this game +4 controllers was absolute heaven
My word this game was awesome!! 4 player matches with my bros, good times back in the day.
No Mercy, Wrestlemania 2000, & Revenge... The N64's Holy Trinity fo wrestling games!
