  • Disney’s Theme Parks haven’t always had the presence of Indiana Jones, and the attractions that do exist have a long, complicated history. Today, we take a deep dive into the Indiana Jones attractions that didn’t make the cut - from an extremely ambitious Indiana Jones land at Disneyland, to a continually downgraded mine cart roller coaster at Disneyland Paris!

    • @ashenbonfire
      @ashenbonfire 11 месяцев назад

      The point of the "Blue Sky" concept phase is to build up a massive expanse of ideas which then can be filtered through for what will work realistically. Sometimes, concerning yourself with budget to begin with will hurt the creative process, since you're starting off worrying about anything you try to implement. Allowing your mind to run wild will let you and others pick out the big highlights which can then become focal points or reengineered for another concept later. WDI recognizes this, and its a system that they've used for ages.

It was the year of the parks 5th anniversary in 1997 and I remember it as it was yesterday (I was 22, so this is not a kids imagination) Maybe it was a special treat for the guests for the anniversary? A lot of the cancelled and discarded ideas for Indiana Rides were used in Tokyo Disney Sea - there's an Indiana cast member who walks around flirting with guests, Temple of Doom (think that's the name) ride that goes inside a pyramid that has a giant Ape statue inside and backwards boulder chase (and Indiana animatronics), Jeep transports and a Raging Spirits ride that is similar themed rollercoaster with a 360 inversion.

    When I was 5 (or 6), back in the opening year of 1995, I was playing with the queue's interactive elements. I was in the room with the spikes, and I shook the bamboo column that starts the lowering sound. A man in line, likely Indian based on the accent, told me "Don't worry, little boy. It is only a toy."
    I just love that he referred to it that way.

    I first went on this ride in 2003 during its 'backwards' time when I was 9, and solo as my parents hated thrill rides. We went in the end of September and the park was EMPTY so, with the exception of the major popular rides like Thunder Mountain, everything had pretty much 0 wait times, including this ride. I loved it and each time the car got back to the station there were at most maybe 4 or 5 people waiting to get on so the guys running the ride just let me stay on it. I probably spent maybe 30 minutes just going around and around over and over again. 9 year old me thought it was great.

  • @isaacfortner
    @isaacfortner 5 лет назад +9

    No mention of Tokyo DisneySea? That park has an Indiana Jones land with a tweaked version of the Disneyland Indiana Jones ride themed to The Crystal Skull, and a copy of The Temple of Peril called "Raging Spirits".
    Indiana Jones and The Crystal Skull is better than the Disneyland version, IMO, as it has some better special effects and the line queue is even more interesting and well-themed than Disneyland, although the general theming and track layouts are identical.
    Raging Spirits is a direct copy of The Temple of Peril, and while it is very short, I did think the theming was pretty good, and it looks incredible at night with all of the lights on (the loop dives into a pit of smoky lava). It also has a neat fountain in front with water pouring down the temple steps and fire running across the water.
    The rest of the land is incredibly well-themed with restaurants and scenery to explore. It also felt like there was still quite a bit of room to add onto that area in the future, so maybe the Oriental Land Company's larger park budgets could make the full Indiana Jones land a reality in the future?

    Had no idea about this plan. It would've been an immersive world all it's own to say the least. I would have loved to see the multiple-rides-pass-through-each-other feature. But I like that Adventureland in Disneyland is kept reminiscent of DISNEYLAND and WALT and the history that comes with the park.

    As author of the DLP book and webmaster of the D&M website, both from where the author of the video took the WDI renderings you can see in it, i want to correct some misleading facts you can hear in the video: First, Euro Disney opened with 10 million visitors, which was great for a first year Disney park. The Temple of Peril was not a "downscaled" version from Disneyland as he states, but part of a 10 attraction "Added Capacity" program, in response to DLP's "large crowds"!
    The initial Disneyland Indy package was never 220 million, but 100m less than that. Imagineers were asked to get it under 100 and it opened exactly on it's target budget.
    As for Paris, the "Added Capacity" program was tasked with delivering 13,000 additional rides per hour to quickly to reduce the impact of initial crowds. That program included Storybookland, Casey Junior, The Old Mill, Sleeping Beauty Walk Through, Aladdin Walk Through, Temple of Peril, Chaparral Stage Show, Frontierland Fort walk through, Discoveryland Train Station and Submarine Nautilus. The goal was never for a "cheap" Indy...but to distribute 10 additional attractions through the park that would add 13,000 in additional hourly capacity. If several attractions became "little gems", all the better!
    He is wrong again in saying DLP desperately needed a "real" thrill ride, as Big Thunder at DLP was opening day, and continues to be, the number one DLP thrill favorite.
    Space Mountain was also planned from opening to be the first planned major addition. Its placement would balance the 2 "E" ticket attractions.
    Temple of Peril, Storybook/Casey and the Nautilus all exceeded expectations for added capacity, and remain today as guest favorites, although their initial creation was to ease initial crowd demands.
    Why does the perception continue about Disneyland Paris being a failure? The park was creatively well received...
    The overly ambitious hotels dragged profits down. When the economy worsened, the hotels remained empty. The plan was to sell them to Hilton, Marriott, and Sheraton and lease back operation. This was off the table due to the faltering performance and economics. The short term interest rates were massive and much was done on Disney's behalf to make things look bleak to get reductions from the economic burdens.
    The park has never been less than the number one tourist destination in Europe, and never suffered as low attendance as Hong Kong Disneyland.

    Binging! In 1996 Feb, I took my 2 children to Disneyland w/my 2nd to oldest sister. It was a great day with hardly any crowds & the time to get off the Indiana ride to getting back in line was a mere 15 minutes! I laughed so hard when "Indy" came sliding down that rope & my sister hollered at him, "Get in Indy!!" & my son said, "mom, we have to ride it again, I was so busy 'driving' I forgot it was a ride!" We rode it at least 6 times if not more. The Star Tours was still there & we ride that a bunch too.

    My last few days in one video. At the moment, I'm really into Indiana Jones and at every opportunity I look for merchandise to add to a Indy shrine. My cousin plans to travel to Disneyland Paris (we live in Germany, so it's not that long) and I wanted to join her just for buying Indiana Jones stuff and going on a Indy ride. Unfortunately, the european Indy ride has so much to do with Indy as I with consequent studying, nothing. So I, being piss to live in Europe, asked her if she could bring me some merchandise from the park. It's still sad that there's no good Indy Ride in Europe.

      Look at the difference between Pirates of the Caribbean in Walt Disney World and parts the Caribbean in Disneyland park. If the Indiana Jones attraction in Disneyland came over to DAK and replaced dinosaur it probably wouldn’t be the full fledge thing. The track layout is similar but different. That area definitely need to revamp though!

    • @SalivatingSteve
      @SalivatingSteve 5 лет назад

      @@cwechter I've heard Dinosaur has the exact same track layout as the Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland. There have been rumors that they've considered re-theming Dinosaur into Indiana Jones, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. They're blowing their budget on Galaxy's Edge and the overhaul of Epcot -- and Epcot desperately needs refreshing.

    I rode Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril this year for the first time and was very disappointed especially as an Indiana Jones fan, although I never knew it had such history. It made sense based on the failure of Euro Disney and interesting it attempted to be a park saving ride in the same vein as Space Mountain.
    Really hoping the parks see some of these concepts come to life either in Hollywood Studios or in DLP where there is definitely room to expand their awesome Adventureland.

    It looks like the future of rides will be based on those "3-d screens." However, other than Pirates and the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland there are no rides that I feel reach that level. Even the Indiana Jones ride as huge and well made as it is doesn't have that special feeling. The Jungle Cruise is also pretty good, but I feel lacks so much potential. The idea of having this massive Indiana Jones ride is obviously amazing, but I would rather they go smaller and more creative and stay away from the screens, they just will never be as good as reality. The greatest disappointment of all was Galaxy's Edge, the new "Star Wars" land, which I hear doesn't feel much like Star Wars. They already had a Star Wars "screen" ride for over two decades. They needed to do a creative and ground breaking attraction that Walt's crew would've came up with. Instead they listened to Kathleen Kennedy and as usual all her ideas have bombed.

  • @SalivatingSteve
    @SalivatingSteve 5 лет назад

    They should have added the Indiana Jones jeep adventure to Euro Disney. That attraction is only at Disneyland and Tokyo Disney Sea. Dinosaur at Animal Kingdom uses the same ride system and track layout, but it's just not the same.

    The giant show building containing multiple rides reminds me of the Thunder Mesa plan for Walt Disney World's Frontierland, with a mine-train roller coaster on top, and a dark water ride called the Western Rivers Expedition (which Disney conceived as the East Coast counterpart to Pirates of the Caribbean) inside. Like the Indiana Jones project, it got postponed and then killed by budget cuts after Disney decided they needed to build an actual East Coast Pirates instead; Western Rivers Expedition disappeared entirely and the coaster was eventually built as a stand-alone ride, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. At least BTMR is a good, impressive ride!

    • @DaBoweh
      @DaBoweh 5 лет назад

      It was the same story for Discovery Mountain as well. The briefly mentioned in this video Space Mountain at DLP was meant to be a large show building which housed other attractions like star tours, a version of 20,000 leagues, and a ride based on Journey to the Center of the Earth. The scale of the project was why there was no space mountain for the park's grand opening, and the low attendance forced them to scrap the original plans and reduce the building to house a single ride like other parks.
